4641  Other / Meta / Re: Express thoughts about B&H and rank and merit system on: September 10, 2020, 03:27:03 AM
The beginners & help section had blasted with new threads lately on scam related threads. I have seen that many wanted to help as it is their intention is to keep everybody aware from the current events and news of scam topics. It was indeed helpful to us newbie or not newbie users as for the awareness of the information posted by these users.
Good initiatives but such threads should be on Scam Accusations.

I think positively about such threads in Beginners & Help, it help newbies (who have not yet known and visited the Scam Accusations subboard to get warnings on phishing sites.

To imporve, in Beginners & Help, creators should make threads on general scam detective methods (guides) rather than report phishing sites or scam projects separately there.

Beginners & Help - All primitive questions (to pros like us Cool) like "what are ASICS", "who is satoshi" and "what is mining" should stay here.

Anyway, it is more good than harm.

I forgot to mention about topic title earlier.

"Express thoughts about B&H and rank and merit system" looks better.

4642  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: {Warning}: Poloniex Phishing Website on: September 10, 2020, 02:39:18 AM
Scammers who own that phishing site use a very old method (Personally I see phishing sites that aim at Poloniex in 2017 when the exchange was the hottest in crypto before it slipped behind Bittrex, then Binance).

I am thankful for you to report it and bring the scam method here so that I think it is a good time to re-read Punycode and how to protect yourself from Homograph Phishing attacks?

For exchanges, to be safe:
  • Bookmark domain addresses
  • Make your own sheets to save domain addresses (for double checks)
  • Use third-party coin market websites, ie. coinmarketcap.com or coingecko.com (for tripple checks)
For crypto newbies, they must visit coinmarketcap.com or coingecko.com or both to check info and get links of exchanges.

After that thread End of newbie restrictions; ban changes that was made in January 2014, theymos repeatedly emphasized that there will no longer be newbie jails. I am going to search and give more posts of theymos.

Historical changes of newbie jails

In the announcement thread for self-moderated feature, theymos wrote
There are no rules to self-moderation. In self-moderated threads, replies belong to the OP. In other threads, replies belong to the respondents individually. Think carefully about whether you want to reply to a self-moderated topic, as your post may not be given due respect.
I think we can take it and move onwards by sticking with the core approach "Don't feed the troll".

Trollers create such threads to troll and catch attention of readers and posters. If no one replies to such threads, they won't keep their monologue for too long. It reduces traffics in trolling-threads and also discourages them to create other trolling-threads.
4644  Other / Meta / Re: Recover a blocked account on: September 10, 2020, 01:59:56 AM
What happened to this thread?
Making many appeal threads on Meta won't help. You already made an appeal and received some ideas from members. No positive response or action from the moderators simply means you've got to move on my friend.

  • Topic title is misleading.
    • His account was permanently banned, not blocked. Blocked means account was blocked because of suspicious things and real owner can recover it later if provides enough evidence for ownership.
    • The title should be "Please give me a second chance, my account was permanent banned". Can leave a tag like [BAN APPEAL] if wanted.
  • Breaks rules again, this time ban evasion rule. Created 2 different account, and used both to post after ban means ban evasion. There are investigations on his account previously: plagiarism, ban evasion (but I don't discuss it here). At least by create the second account after that ban, then open 2 threads: break rules 2 times.

25. Ban evasion (using or creating accounts while one of your accounts is banned) is not allowed.[e]

The only thing you can do is "Bump" that thread Please help restore the account once per 24 hours.

Again, topic title is misleading. No hack, no restore.

13. Bumps, "updates" are limited to once per 24 hours per thread. Bumping multiple threads at the same time is allowed if it's not annoying. [2][e]

21. Old bumps should be deleted. [2]

- Don't spam. Post made after page 5 we usually consider as a spam. We can accept no more than 10% posts of weekly post quota (for example 2-3 of 25), if posts are written after page 5.

  • Mostly, problems of OP can be answered in a few first posts or a few first pages. Honestly, after page 2 to 3, discussions tend to be repeat what are presented in early first pages (1 to 3 or you can expand it to 5). It is why the forum has a lock button, when answers are given, lock topics. Unfortunately, many members don't lock their topics)
  • The rule does not say that all posts after page #5 won't be counted for weekly payments. It is at 10%.
  • Disadvantage: sometimes posts after page 5 can still be helpful -- when newbies join topics and ask for answers, if you write a good post, it can help them. However, as said, answers can be found at early pages (mostly). They are simply too lazy to read first pages and look for available answers.
  • A helpful post in early pages is more helpful than another helpful post in page 10, 20 -- if contents are similar
  • 4 posts per day don't kill you
  • The rule can help to reduce debates on how posts are counted and accept rules of campaign during participation time is a must.

Posters should Search for: available topics, then read first posts, pages or last pages (if topics are locked). I am sure answers can be found.

Example: I see it mins ago. That post is unnecessary because answers are given by some other posters. Even at page 1, that post is unnecessary.
4646  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to check whether your email address has been compromised? on: September 09, 2020, 06:16:09 AM
As far as I know, you just have to enter your email address and check their databases if your email has been breached or not. And then they have this services that will let you notify when your email has been breached.
No. You don't get my idea. I meant if you don't enter your email address on that site, they likely don't have your email address in their database. Maybe they have it on database or maybe not before the time you enter and search. It is only assumption and the prevention is protect the privacy of your important email address.

As same as when you use your bitcoin address, when you lost its anonymity, you can not get it back.
4647  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to check whether your email address has been compromised? on: September 09, 2020, 05:37:08 AM
First website:

Have i been pwned?
Are you safe if you enter your email address and check on that site?

I guess you will be not. It is a trap. Instead showing your email address publicly, on the forum and anywhere else, you enter it and check on that site. Are you sure that they won't keep your email address on their database and will see it to other companies?

Please make sure that:
  • Don't publicly show your email address.
  • For important accounts, allocate specific emails for those accounts and don't use them for other purposes on other platforms.
  • Don't self-breach your email address by arbitrarily enter your email addresses and check on any site (like what you supposed)
4648  Other / Meta / Re: Allow newbies with merit to post images on: September 09, 2020, 05:09:12 AM
Images can be abused and if they already earn merit (one at least) they will be able to show images later when ranking up to Junior Members. About one month of waiting since date of registration is not too long.
Due to abuse, newbie-posted embedded images are now disabled on these pages:
< ... >
Disabled images get transformed into links automatically. When the poster becomes a Jr member, the images that he tried to post previously will automatically be re-enabled (though there might be a few minutes of delay).

This extends to all past posts as well as future ones.

Unofficial solutions

Readers / viewers can see Newbie's images if newbies know the method to post their images.

On imgur.com, after you upload image, you will have to click on:

Copy Link -- Get share links -- Some options to choose:

  • Share Link
  • HTML Embed
  • BBCode (Forums)
  • Markdown (Reddit)

If they choose the third, they can not display images anyway and need quotes for users at higher ranks to display images in quotes. Fortunately, with this option, their images will automatically displayed later when they rank up to Junior Member at least.

If they choose the first option, viewers can see their images at their post history. Images are shared by Share Link option will be displayed on Newbies' post history page. The inconvenience is: you have to go to post history and scroll down to that post to see images. Fortunately again, with newbies they don't have many posts (excludes spam newbies).

You can check.  Cheesy

In Mastering Bitcoin (chapter 4). you can get an explanation on Vanity address and estimated time to find it with a desktop computer.

The power of one computer decides the speed it can be able to a specific-prefixed Vanity address. When you create it, do it off-line.

The table shows you why when you check a few first and last characters of your BTC address will help you have safe bitcoin transactions. Please read How to lose your Bitcoins with CTRL-C CTRL-V

Generating vanity addresses

Let’s look at the pattern "1Kids" as a number and see how frequently we might find this pattern in a bitcoin address (see The frequency of a vanity pattern (1KidsCharity) and average search time on a desktop PC). An average desktop computer PC, without any specialized hardware, can search approximately 100,000 keys per second.

< ... >

As you can see, Eugenia won’t be creating the vanity address "1KidsCharity" anytime soon, even if she had access to several thousand computers. Each additional character increases the difficulty by a factor of 58. Patterns with more than seven characters are usually found by specialized hardware, such as custom-built desktops with multiple GPUs. These are often repurposed bitcoin mining "rigs" that are no longer profitable for bitcoin mining but can be used to find vanity addresses. Vanity searches on GPU systems are many orders of magnitude faster than on a general-purpose CPU.

Another way to find a vanity address is to outsource the work to a pool of vanity miners, such as the pool at Vanity Pool. A pool is a service that allows those with GPU hardware to earn bitcoin searching for vanity addresses for others. For a small payment (0.01 bitcoin or approximately $5 at the time of this writing), Eugenia can outsource the search for a seven-character pattern vanity address and get results in a few hours instead of having to run a CPU search for months.

Is this information in OP actual? Do we have indeed 97 merit sources at this moment on the forum?
Link to observe it: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=sources and if you want to see historic changes in merit sources & smerit allocation monthly, see there Merit source observations

Stay tuned, later today, I am going to give you an update of that one. Of course I expect to see increases in stats but let's see what we have with merit data.
4652  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin for salary on: September 08, 2020, 04:13:36 PM
In the bull market in 2017, the GMO company made that announcement A company in Japan wants to start paying employees in Bitcoin. I remembered how the people reacted to that news.

As other said, it relates to different things:
- Local laws: Legality of bitcoin in local nation, area, etc.
- How the company make deal with their employees for payment in bitcoin: all in bitcoin or half in bitcoin and half in fiat.
- Cutoff day to make payment and from which exchange(s), the btc price rate will be taken from.

I am sure it is reasonable when crypto companies pay their employees in crypto.  Cheesy
4653  Economy / Services / Re: [CFNP] BestChange Signature Campaign | Sr Member+ on: September 08, 2020, 02:30:43 PM
We are increasing the reward up to 4 USD for Hero Member and for Legendary Member (maximum lumpsum payment of 100 USD a week for 25 posts), and up to 3 USD for Sr. Member (maximum lumpsum payment of 75 USD a week for 25 posts). Also, we will be paying a weekly bonus to 5 participants the quality of whose posts we find the highest. The bonus will be 30 USD for 1 participant (the total bonus for 5 participants will be 150 USD per week). So, the maximum reward for a Here/Legendary Member together with the bonus can reach 130 USD per week which is 1.5 times higher than the current reward.

However, the number of participants will be considerably reduced. From the current list, we will keep only 20 participants and we will open 5 new slots for Sr. Member, Hero Member and Legendary Member. We will announce the list of the remaining participants tomorrow (September 09, 2020).
It is cool to see these changes are coming and will go in effects since tomorrow. Whatever results for the list tomorrow, I appreciate your changes, in terms of quality and payment rates as well as bonus for top 5 participants each week.  Cheesy

It's sad to know about this major changes in the campaign, but I understand how you guys want to grow more. It's been a long time being a participant in the best change campaign. Although it is sad for me as a full member only, I'm honestly glad that you guys are aiming to get long in the forum. I'm also glad that I've been part of your history. Kudos BestChange !
No need to feel sad and you can take it as a motivation to increase your post quality, rank up (in the process of ranking up, your post quality will rise, even you don't notice such daily changes). Later, you can come back with application and take your slot if you deserve it. If it is not BestChange, you will also be able to find another good campaign.

My disclosure
The merit system motivated me and its play important part to my post quality as well as my contributions on the forum. Now, there is no rank higher than Legendary but earning merit is my favorite habit. I feel bad if I don't earn a single merit each week, honestly.
As I said, even no new rank, I've still enjoyed my climbs on median, and interquartile range (for earned merits).

4656  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Invest for beginners on: September 08, 2020, 02:32:24 AM
A quick genuine question: I'm not going to make complete assumptions, but  do you actually know what you're investing in? Namely, "bitcoin, etherum and ripple"? I'm asking this because one or two of those assets in your list is a really really bad investment in my opinion.
Ripple is the bad one and Ethereum is not good as many people thought of. It is not completely wrong to say Ethereum is used by scammers as their very favorite tool to create their scam projects, then steal funds from investors. Such abuse brings adverse effects back to Ethereum price, keep it at low for a long time (high fee, abuse from scammers).

ICO, IEO, then DeFi this year. I also see a shooting star that tries to replace or at least repeat what Ethereum has, and has been used more popularly by scammers, TRON. Who can forget the lunch of Justin Sun?  Cheesy

I know what scammers can abuse on anything they can use as their tools. Bitcoin, Ethereum, TRON, and any other cryptocurrencies. Investors can not blame on Ethereum's core team responsibility for their own bad investment choices. It is how market works (bad entry, bad exit, loss) and how winners and losers on the market earn or lose money.

As said, 'it is not completely wrong' but it is unfair to say Ethereum is a scam and is created for scammers. Bad or good depends on how each person uses it.

Alfred Nobel’s life and work (invention of Nobel has two sides and we can not blame on him on how bad guys abuse his invetion)
4657  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do we have to archive only our own pages or everything we see ? on: September 08, 2020, 01:56:45 AM
Archive has its role as a proof of something in the past, initial post, or ownership like when you stake a bitcoin message with one address you own, then someone verify it and archive it for you.

Like this: Stake your bitcoin address here like what you staked and one user archived it for you.

Or when someone find something, mostly on suspicious things like scam projects, then archive for reports and shut them down. You can see many of such in Scam accusation board or sometime in Reputation board.

Or when you find a plagiarism, archive before report it like that Report plagiarism (copy/paste) here. Mods: please give temp or permban as needed
4658  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: LBCOIN? CBDC? Are these really helping to promote mass cryptocurrency adoption? on: September 07, 2020, 07:04:44 AM
Another thread on Central Bank Digital Currencies: Betting on bitcoin against Central Bank Digital Currencies. You can keep discussions going on that thread which already has a few informative replies.

Future launch of central bank digital currencies do help crypto adoption because the fact is they will catch more attention of people, investors, journalists and of course they will be massively seeded by governments. It is good to make cryptocurrency become more popular. Nevertheless, any currencies from central bank should be considered as faked ones because of centralization. Blockchain is for decentralization that is the core characteristic of blockchain.

I'd like to call them as Centralized Digital Currencies rather than Central Bank Digital Currencies. The name plays as a warning!

[Guide] Identify scam projects by hidden premined coin indicator via explorer

That thread was made in 2019, with the trend of stake & masternode coins. I can not count how many of them are scam. The value of the thread has still been here. Let's check the block explorer of SUSHI and review what happened last 2 day.

What SUSHI developer did is a shame and they moved huge tokens but in some other cases, scam developers move their coins or tokens gradually and you might not notice. Personally, I always check block explorers and investigate movements of big addresses before I consider to invest.

I don't know how good the software is but you should know and remember that your life (your capital) should not be put on working capacity of any software. Being careless and rely on softwares might cause your capital loss.

Some points to support your OP:
  • Always backup your crypto important details: for wallets (private key - Bitcoin Core, mnemonic seed - Electrum, and password, PIN number)
  • Test the validity of backup before you actually begin to use that wallet. It sucks if you believe in your incorrect backup (with typo in private key or seed)
  • Backup (will be best) should be made in multi files and store in some different methods and places.
  • Backup should not be stored online. You should never use your devices for daily works to store your backups.

Last but not least, if you already have your husband/ wife/ children, you should let such info into one of them, just in case when you get unexpected accident. It does not make sense for any of your time, efforts to collect BTC -- from trading, investment, but at the ends you can neither get financial benefits from it nor your loved ones.

Risks of using third-party softwares, especially pirated/ hacked softwares are pointed out by @DdmrDdmr. You should have a warning for such risks at beginning of your OP.
