5281  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Fork November: Ledger wallet in "Legacy" or "Segwit" to get free coins? on: October 31, 2017, 02:56:22 AM
Wow, this sounds waaaay to complicated for me to risk.

I think I'm just gonna keep my coins in legacy, and not touch the "2x"-coins until that team decides to implement replay protection.
I hope exchanges will reject their coin until they make it safe.

Or maybe Ledger will design a ready made application to safely split/send the 2x coins while keeping your BTC wallet untouched.

There's a much simpler way to look at it.

You've got a girlfriend who has an identical twin sister. Both your girlfriend and her sister have secrets and motivations you are only dimly aware of. They have a habit of sharing each other's clothes.

You need to be very, very careful.

Smiley

For Trezor a few weeks ago they advised everyone move from a legacy to a "New Style (Segwit)" account in order to get the benefits of the new style, such as faster transactions and lower fees. I read that as true but not accommodating all the possible variations of split forks.

Thus for Trezor it seems reasonable all coins should be on legacy, non segwit accounts.

Maybe there's a shitload of viruses slowing your system down as they inject themselves into everything that's outward bound?
Smiley

I have been in IT technologies for years (database programming, system administration, etc.), so I assure you my computers, smartphones, etc all are absolutely free from any viruses or malware of any sort

Mathematical proofs of the integrity of data are required.

Please stop with the "Trust me" game.

Nobody is fooled by it.
5283  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Whole Bitcoin Core 0.15 blockchain database on Google Drive on: October 30, 2017, 06:20:09 PM
.....
Secondly, I wrote a great number of posts in  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2303869 explaining :
how long I had to be waiting (weeks) till my Bitcoin Core 0.14.2 fully synced itself at last. And the bottleneck was NOT in any way related to my PC or internet bandwidth.

Why would anyone trust them with something that poses a threat to their future ambitions.
Friend, what kind of threat can you see here?
I assure you, Google Drive would never replace my files, or do other similar meanness)
So, download safely (if you haven't started your full Bitcoin Core node yet) and don't worry about anything you mentioned

First, you didn't understand about how a signature of the file directory is the only verification.

Now, again, you stand on a position of perceived threats, and assure people as to that they should TRUST google.

But you make these assertions with respect to Bitcoin, which is defined as a peer to peer method of exchanging money WITHOUT TRUST.

I'm seeing a little conflict there.

Opinion?
5285  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do islam hates people? on: October 28, 2017, 11:46:51 PM
because there are only muslim countries which are the victim of cruelty of israil, America which are non muslim countries. israil flows the blood of the millions of the innocent muslims in palstine. like that america flows the blood of thousands or in lacs of the muslims of Afghanistan, iraq and sham. Buddhists flows the blood thousands of the muslims in Mayanmar. Kashmir is the victim of cruelty of India and offer the many lives for freedom. it is the reason that muslims hate the people.

All that you are saying here is that sometimes Muslims don't get their way, and then they blame the other party, and hate them.

I agree, but this is devoid of any responsibility for the many, many, many atrocities and terrorist acts by Muslims.

Thank you for your post though, because it is honest speaking from the heart, as opposed to 9 of 10 Muslims posting here who simply prattle lies. Takiyya.
5286  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you diversify? on: October 28, 2017, 12:08:49 PM
I'm not diversified in the slightest. I'm worth 96-97% crypto. I will diversify when a certain price level has been reached, but only reluctantly.

I probably wouldn't bother with metals or stocks. I'd pull out enough to buy property and run it for a bit and keep the rest in crypto.

Stupid? Probably. But no one got anywhere without a dose of stupidity.

I would like a big bottle of stupid pills.
5287  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Segwit 2x warplan revealed by 2x insider [RED ALERT] on: October 28, 2017, 12:07:10 PM
All this reduces to is to expect dust attack against BTC and coordinated pump and dump schemes in the weeks following 2x.

That's the hostile takeover that people have sensed already.

It's a good point that the battle is over control of the "BTC" brand, currently worth over a hundred billion.

As for NYA, I wouldn't trust ANYTHING coming out of NY.
5288  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Bitcoin overcome Paypal? on: October 27, 2017, 09:31:44 PM
Q3 2017 Paypal volume was 114 Billion.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/277841/paypals-total-payment-volume/

Now for BTC volume

https://blockchain.info/charts/trade-volume?showDataPoints=true

Easily over 100M per day, 90 days in a quarter.

Granted the BTC values jump around a bit and one needs to consider "change" being returned but it sure looks like in last quarter BTC overtook PayPal!
5289  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin 101 on: October 27, 2017, 05:43:24 PM
Why was Satoshi opposed to trust?
This has been in my personal text for a while.

"The cost of mediation increases transaction costs, limiting the minimum transaction size and cutting off the possibility for small casual transactions, and there is a broader cost in the loss of ability to make non-reversible payments for non-reversible services".

Relying on a third party increases the possibility of betrayal, and finding the right third party to oversee the transaction can be an expensive hassle.

Even though BTC is not particularly practical for microtransactions right now, it may be with the introduction of the Lightning Network and offchain solutions, which still do not give any third party access to your coins during the process.

Agreed. We seriously need a solution to USD1-10$ transactions and micropayments.

Satoshi Nakamoto's paper.

Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System - Bitcoin.org

https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf

"Commerce on the Internet has come to rely almost exclusively on financial institutions serving as trusted third parties to process electronic payments. While the system works well enough for most transactions, it still suffers from the inherent weaknesses of the trust based model. Completely non-reversible transactions are not really possible, since financial institutions cannot avoid mediating disputes. The cost of mediation..."

Why was Satoshi opposed to trust?

Why did you stop reading? Satoshi told you why in the next few sentences.

"The cost of mediation . . . "

YES!

It's not that I stopped reading. I started reading Satoshi's paper five years ago and I am still reading it.

This thread is exactly what the title says. Bitcoin 101. For newbies/anyone who wants to learn.

I propose going through his 9 page paper one paragraph at a time, spending as little or as long on each as is useful.
5291  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Post your SegWit questions here - open discussion - big week for Bitcoin! on: October 27, 2017, 03:05:21 PM
Could you two please get back to the topic. Its not a single question about segwit in any of your posts.
Start your own thread

I tried and failed to make any sense of this discussion. Way way too long and convoluted posts.

5292  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Security Risks in downloading the whole Bitcoin Blockchain from external srces?? on: October 27, 2017, 02:52:32 PM

Spendulus, I understand that signatures are the only reliable proof that the database files are really valid and correct. Is there a way I could add such a signature for my upload if all I remember it was created from the actual blockchain as for the morning of October 24th?

I think you've answered your own question there.

Spendulus, if I understand you right, you mean there is a danger that one could hide some malicious soft inside the blockchain files. Well, of course every internet download should be scanned with an antivirus.

That would be a danger for the user, his computer and so on.

What I was concerned most of all was   in no case, by no means to cause any harm to the Bitcoin Blockchain network, if there suddenly appeared some full nodes with a malicious wrong database (suppose some malifactors use the hint and uploaded some corrupted databases

NO.

Virus scanners routinely find (falsely) sections of the blockchain that they consider viruses. These are false positives, but rest assured that code can be disguised, such that it can be assembled later, without having a virus signature. That would be a false negative from the scanner.

In addition, it would be ridiculously easy to include extra files in the directories built, said files being outside of the blockchain.

You asked a question regarding an independent blockchain download method, and I answered your question. The proof of the integrity and safety of the download is the signature. Here it appears one would need several signatures, one for each subdirectory and one for the overall folder.

If this is not understood I'll be happy to elaborate.
5295  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Security Risks in downloading the whole Bitcoin Blockchain from external srces?? on: October 27, 2017, 11:50:25 AM
Hello everyone,

Recently I uploaded the whole Bitcoin Core blockchain database to my Google Drive, see details here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2321650

But later a wise forum's hero member miguelmorales85 expressed deep concern about security risks in downloading and using such a blockchain database in one's Bitcoin Core application.

I am absolutely sure SECURITY RISKS are NEVER ACCEPTABLE in Bitcoin network!!!

I am still a newbie in blockchain technologies, so I'd ask smart technical guys to explain a little bit: are there actually any real security risks here??? What are they?

If yes, I will immediately delete the upload from the Google Drive

Well, couldn't a malicious payload be embedded in the database? Something that could be lay dormant until a signal is received to activate? Think of it this way. The database resides in directories. Right now I can add files to those directories, and Core does not care. It's only operating on the files it is directed to. The additional files are undetected.

What you need here is a verifiable signature on the files which proves they match byte for byte with the actual master database.

Everyone should know the fallacy of downloading and using files without verifying the signature.

A classic way of injecting a payload into user computers is to start with a "thing they want," add the malicious payload, then prompt in various ways for them to download the "thing they want." In the case of bitcoin users, the most glaring example would be a compromised wallet.

Here we have a blockchain database. Suppose Bad Guy (BG) sees a lot of people dl'ing your database, then he grabs a user id one character off, creates a download link almost identical, and offers some appeal to greed to induce downloads. Before anyone catches it there are thousands of downloads.

Verification of the file signature prevents this. If Core is downloaded and it's signature verified, then that verified code is used to download the blockchain, one can say that the entire system is good.
5296  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: where do I place 100k? on: October 27, 2017, 11:45:12 AM
should it be invested in bitcoin and hold?

or

should it be invested in alt coins?

and why or what will make it sustainable via etc vs. alt investment

Set up a Trezor, and get an account at a place like coinbase. Start buying at small amounts like $500USD and practice moving it to the hardware wallet.

Then do larger amounts, like $5000USD.

Spread the risk out this way. Then pretty soon you will have the entire amount secure in an offline cold storage. Keep a few hundred USD/0.1BTC in the coinbase/whatever as fun money.
5297  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Segwit2X:Users care which side wins? Or do they? on: October 27, 2017, 11:40:33 AM
I don't agree - we want a faster Bitcoin for example. You can only use it in shops, for example, once it gets a lot faster.

It's never going to be faster. 10 minutes is the sweet spot. It may be faster with layers on top, but I don't think the core ways in which the original chain operates are going to change now.

The solution is slow the shops down, make them serve beer. Ring a bell every block solved.

All the world's shops must bow before Satoshi.

5298  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Segwit2X:Users care which side wins? Or do they? on: October 27, 2017, 02:26:16 AM
I have been observing social media polls and saw how high the number of people who haven't picked a side in this debate or who just don't think its important. I am interested if finding out whether it is important to have a position or not?

USERS do not have a say in this.

MINERS have a say.

Now, is it important to have a position on a matter (as a user) that you do not have a say in?

I think the answer is yes......

Users absolutely have a say in it. If nobody changes their client, current bitcoin nodes won't accept the new blocks.

Huh?

Coinbase, for example, has said they (their program) will support both, and if after a while one dominates, then they will drop the weak one.

But miners still gotta mine or there's nothing.
5299  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How I lost 95 Bitcoin on: October 27, 2017, 02:16:59 AM
I bought my first few Bitcoins in 2012; eventually I got around 100 and managed to hold most of them until this point. Yesterday they were stolen from me. Shortly after I made a transaction, I left my PC with Electrum open, I believe there was a key logger waiting for me to type my password as when I returned an hour later, I saw my account had been emptied......

There are other possibilities.

A) you had downloaded, unwittingly an infected copy of Electrum
B) someone walked by your computer, saw the open program and took what they saw
5300  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: is it better to invest in bitcoin prior to "forks" or after "forks" ? on: October 27, 2017, 02:11:03 AM
positive & negatives , cause & affect, action & reaction

Ignore the forks.

Invest in AND USE Bitcoin if you believe in and want to further the idea of people moving to freedom from debt based currencies, freedom from national fiat money schemes and guys in three piece suits in skyscrapers telling them....

"Trust me."

That INCLUDES freedom from the new crowd of guys in three piece suits from skyscrapers who are trying to gain control of crypto currencies or enrich themselves from it.
