5381  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN AntRouter R1: 1st wireless networking device with bitcoin mining chip on: October 17, 2015, 04:42:34 PM
I burned out a nanofury usb stick by overclocking it from "50 bits" to "52 bits" (56 bits max), I would be wary of overclocking these little chips, especially since they do not have any active cooling.  It would only be a matter of time (couple weeks in the case of my stick) before the mining chip burns itself out.  And for a gain of ~2GH, is it really worth it?

technically i have two antrouters (1 still BNI[sealed]B) so would not be devestated. any link to your nanofury failure (which IIRC is actually a fitfury chip, hence the "56bit max"), curious if the chip, PCB, or something else failed.

I think bitmain is better system and am curious if there is an internal temperature probe to shutdown at 65C (or 80C, whatever it is on the S-series). My attitude is that if the R1 surface isn't TOO hot (ie stickminer hard-to-touch) then thermal failure is unlikely. the chip can push way further, my concern is what the DC/DC and AC/DC component limits are.

I tried to open the case with a pair of thin screwdrivers, but its surprisingly well-assembled. It seems like the case is a singular aluminum shell, and the hardware is slotted in from one end, capped with a plastic section (that refuses to pry/pop loose). There are no screwholes or other points of access to dissassemble.

Its a great device physically, I just want to see the UI improved with R1 asic stats, ability to change pools, and simplified network setup/instructions (I want it to be a wifi repeater, but changing that isnt easy)

I'm surprised on all the setup complaints.  I have not got mine yet.  But it seems like BM should have had a screen select X as mode.   And pick what mode you want R1 to be in.

But sounds like that is not happening.  If you get it hot it appears to have holes on the case.  So likely you could push air though the case, and worry a little less about OCing.
5382  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Best miner hardware in case of Free electricity on: October 17, 2015, 04:34:03 PM
Thank you for replies guys.  Exactly S7 is really good but they are not In stock and no real ETA for further batches just promises as I can see.
So I voted for S5 for present moment.  As long I have free electicity and enough free space for hosting these - there is no reason to resell it later.

If free S5 is not a bad choice.  Only thing be warned they run hot and are loud.  So if you really do 9 you might need some cooling (unless your already getting winter air).

But I think you will be much happier with 1/2 of the miners to mess with.  I would go S3 if you got a "bargin" that you pay off soon.  But 22 deices is just not something I would jump into.
5383  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: October 17, 2015, 11:35:34 AM
Is it me or the Bitmain website is down? With the recent spike in BTC price, I was curious to see what they do with the price..!

It does appear to be possibly down.  Not sure if what they are doing.

One thing to keep in mind is it is a better deal to buy now.  But keep in mind there are no 100 coupons (i don't believe currently.   So it's not as big as difference than it should be all because of coupons.
5384  Economy / Goods / Re: Gauging interest in secure laptops on: October 17, 2015, 10:13:25 AM
Good luck with your new venture but those looking for a hardened laptop can always go to a discount outlet, pay in cash and install a linux distro with full disk encryption themselves.

This site is full of mostly technical people.   So loading it for them really is not going to add a lot of value to laptops.   I know you asked about these in  beginners.  And it's true what I quoted most can load a OS on this site.

What you have to do is have cheaper price then going rate.   I don't think you have done this yet. and honestly its not easy to do.  But I think that is key to your profits.
5385  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How earn 1BTC a year? on: October 17, 2015, 10:08:12 AM
Joining a signature campaign with a member status like a member or a full member can earn you 1 BTC yearly if you work and post actively, using faucets is also possible but would require allot of effort to reach 1 BTC in a year.

you can even start the "year" being a newbie and before the end of the "year" you will eventually become a Sr Member and by that i think you already earned around 2-3btc+

if you can do this with multiple account it's even better, you can try to sell those added account later when there are no more spot avalable, or put them in work under other signature

the earning can be crazy with this setup, but you need to dedicate much more time

hemmm it's a good idea join signature campaign with multiple acc
but very many possibles to spaming post

I suggest sticking with one account and doing quality content.  If you are doing multiple in most cases I think content suffers all that matters is maxing out.   So it is not a good situation.

If you have multiple accounts with sig mod's will see this (yes you could try to hide but would be hard with multiple so many posts).   So greater chance of temp ban for having multiple accounts when they see post's if they are not great.  You will be judged even harder in my opinion just for using multiple accounts for sig campaigns.
5386  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where to get highest free BTC? on: October 17, 2015, 10:04:35 AM
are you have more time ? you can be Captcha workers.
you can earn 0.073/10.000 solving capta Smiley

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=835238.0

This takes forever and not much is paid.

Staring at and solving 10k capatcha's is not quick.    Even 1K is going to take a pretty good while.   You have to have fast typing and 100 percent accuracy.

I think it's hard to have 100 percent accuracy when focusing on number per hour.   These rank with faucet on my scale. Not worth the time.
5387  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Vanity Adresses, where can I find them on: October 17, 2015, 10:00:42 AM
Two more good links for vanity address generation and buying. Buying vanity address is always risky, so be careful.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=25804.0
https://bitcoinvanitygen.com/

bitcoinvanitygen.com isnt safe as there are number of users claimed that the address they generate from that site got hacked as you dont have the sole control over your private keys

It's something you really should do yourself if you need one.  I also don't like to store a ton on vanity I feel they are kinda a gimmick.

I think a plain address where I focus on security makes me sleep better.  But if you need a vanity address really look into GPU to find it yourse.
5388  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Oct 11 to Nov 11 Sidehack stick pool club. on: October 17, 2015, 09:56:36 AM
I don't know if there's a cgminer-gekko directory, I can't find it if there is.

I am using the cgminer-gekko Minera image but I never got it to see my compacs.  For the month i've just been running cgminer in a terminal window. I may re-image my SD card to plain raspbian and install cgminer-gekko that way. Clearly i've been running on luck this entire time!

That's weird that cgminer-gekko could not find your compacs. I built that image and it has worked for me and many others.

If you want to try to call cgminer directly (although I'm not sure that it's going to help), it's located here:

/var/www/minera/minera-bin/custom/gminer-gekko

You should not need to run it as root. By default it runs as the "minera" user without a problem.

Before you tried running this manually, did you enable logging in the Minera GUI and take a look at the resulting log? Maybe it would provide some hints as to why it can't see the hardware.

Also, you're using a USB2 powered hub, right? You can't drive sticks directly from a RPi.

I did log into the minera GUI and it looked like it would see one compac stick and the log would just stop, it was only eight or nine lines. I do have a powered hub yes, got 4 sticks and an arctic fan running.

yeah i read around and it seemed like everyone else was doing fine. I ended up just re-flashing the drive with raspbian and re-installing cgminer-gekko. I'm up and running now! Thanks for the help.
I'm trying it out at freq 200 as well,  just a smidge more hash for the club.

I owe Phil for learning about these if you want to have some fun on freq order some y cables - http://www.ebay.com/itm/221661361513?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Those there work great and are really cheap price.  Con is takes a while to get to US.  But they make it really fun to play with freq.

5390  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Would i be better off waiting for the 16nm miners? on: October 17, 2015, 07:49:31 AM
Also, why you metioned Innosilicon? I haven't hear about them for really a long time.  Huh

Because they are the only company who have publicly announced consumer sales of 14nm mining chips with their A3's, unlike Bitmain and SP-Tech who are staying with 28nm for the time being.

sources?  Huh

Lk - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1033676.0

BW  - https://www.bw.com/pool/miner

They teamed up with BW.   There are some big moves that happened.  Are you still with avalon?
5391  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Best miner hardware in case of Free electricity on: October 17, 2015, 07:43:58 AM
remeber that all those s3 need also a bigger place, and they can be quite uncomfortable to have

and anyway the initial investment matter until a certain point, because you can always resell it, and i'm sure the s7 has a better reselling value

I would agree also OP would need fewer.  I think 0 to 22 is just to big of jump.

With OP having free I suggest trying it slow as it is not easy to go from 0 to 22.  And to be honest I would be surprised if most electricity places that are free have that kinda power.
5392  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: good places to hide paper wallet ? on: October 17, 2015, 06:17:53 AM
You should hide you wallet where you best think that no one will find it.

It's not quite this simple. You need it to be protected from possible damage.  This could be from elements such as water, or fire, etc.

If you have the safest place in your house does not matter if not protected.  And you really do need fire and water.   If house catches fire..... firemen use water to stop it.  So in "bad situations" if its not protected from both could be bad.
5393  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where to get highest free BTC? on: October 17, 2015, 06:13:53 AM
Want lots of bitcoin without invest? Only gambling & faucet with huge jackpot which can help you in this case
But, if you're willing to work, try signature campaign & sell your skill for bitcoin, you could earn a lot of bitcoin fast

Neither faucet or gambling are long term answers.  Faucets look around.... not many get a huge jackpot.  Most get pennies per hour.

Gambling is a different beast.  There are those who claim they are better then the 50/50 on some bets...... i think no matter what it's a loosing proposition.

I would avoid both.
5394  Other / Meta / Re: Seriously? "WARNING: This user is a newbie.." on: October 17, 2015, 06:11:17 AM

Hugroll is right, one reminder attached to first message is enough. But if every next message looks like this, you really appear like a scammer to other members.

Get over it bro, it only takes a month to reach jr. member so if you want to remove that warning message, wait until you turn jr.

Chill. If you followed the topic you know I have been here for 2 years. So how does it work? You are tuning into Jr with a time or with an activity where you are actually logged in?

The quickest way I see it is to pass some certain amount of comments/posts.
why is this such a big deal to you?

I would have to agree.  You will be out of newbie in not a ton of time.  So it's not a lifetime sentence of having that or yes that would be a problem.

Before it there seemed to be a to common of a trend of people creating names like sellers of auctions or goods.  They would message people, in a hurry they did not notice was a newbie account and not real person.  So they got scammed.  It seems like this newbie warning has almost if not gotten rid of this which is awesome.

So it by far does more good then bad.
5395  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S4 Setup [HD] on: October 17, 2015, 06:07:33 AM
Ok I will wait then. I've also got this question. I'd like to use this miner part of the time. Does anyone know if it's safe to turn on and off the miner using the small button on the back next to the power supply? (By holding down the button for 3sec). I don't want to slowly wreck this machine but there's also no way that I can sleep with it on.

Thanks!

I can't find an answer to this question.  I am also trying to figure out how to safely turn off my new S4.  Can someone help me?  Thanks!

Yes PSU button is fine, no problems.

Thank you.  So I just press it for 3 seconds?  Or should I just press it normally like I would to turn it on?

Yes just hold it a few seconds.  It is not a instant button.  So on or off a few seconds.

Let us know but that should do the trick.
5396  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Recommended Safety & Cooling on: October 17, 2015, 06:03:54 AM
you can change your fan, if i'm correct the s5 mount 120mm, you can some artif fan f12 or the one with the pwn and install that instead, i've done the same thing with those scrypt miners, and they working fine, and were very quite

or you can undervolt it, but it require a little of experience with electricity

yep, he can always undervolt it, but process seems a little bit complicated, i dont know if this is your case or not, but here you can find a guide about how to do it with an S1 -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=526060.0

i hope it helps you Wink

You can not Penmod a S5, however. My tip would be to set the fan down to 25%-40% depending on the ambient temp. At 25% they are pretty quiet imo.

I would watch ambiant temp before doing this.  They can get pretty warm on S5's.  They do not have a full case and only 1 fan so you should have a cold ambient to turn down that much.

S5's just run warm and are not quiet by design.

For reference, at the moment they are taking in air from a outdoor stream pulled in by a box fan. The outdoor temp is 10c, i have put 2 S1 fan on it running at 2k RPM, which is insanely quiet compared to one stock fan at stock speed. The miner's temp is 50c~

With 1x Stock S5 fan, i get same temps at 2.8k RPM which is still much better than full speed and bearable if in an other, closed room.

You would have a low outside temp to count on this.  If it is still warm in OP or others area it is not near as good with 25 percent fan.

But I admit it's getting cooler in many places at this time of year.  I'm not sure if most can count of so low temps yet all day to run so low.

Yup. 40% with a box fan blowing air through worked for me during summer, however.

I was able to run the miner at full OC with temps ~60c. During some crazy hot day, 30c+ i had to raise sometimes during the day to up to 65% to stay in the low 60c's.

As long as OP and anyone else make sure to temps dont go to upper 60s or 70s, then the miner should be fine.

Atm my temps are in mid 40s.

During most of summer I had around a little over 12k actually around 14k when looking at my spreadsheets.  I forgot about the C1's I was running in a different area.  So i had to use a little more I used 2 of these in front of miner's to push hot air away from miners - http://www.lowes.com/pd_416730-11292-SFDC2-600T_0__?Ntt=416730&UserSearch=416730&productId=4755305&rpp=32

I had one of these to help push air from window - http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-2265QM-20-Inch-Performance-Velocity/dp/B0073CQ9XA/ . And a second window I had a homemade fan with an attic fan.  So it really moved air.

So that worked great on moving air in and through miners.  But the problem then becomes you need to exhaust the air.  I did this mainly with a big gable upgrade - http://www.homedepot.com/p/QuietCool-Professional-3013-CFM-Power-Gable-Mount-Attic-Fan-AFG-PRO-3-0/206047381 .   And with this some vents in ceiling.

But all that got me through summer mining which originally did not think I could do.  So very happy in the end.  I will enjoy the free winter air to save a few bucks coming up.

...the members all pay a monthly mandatory donation to the club of 20% of what their miners made that month or flat membership dues...

Good luck with that.  Miners already get uppity over fees of 1-3%.  Adding an extra 0 is sure to go over just fine with them.

I would agree on 20 I highly doubt many will get interested.  Fact is like eleuthria said miners are known to move pools over much less fee.

Now if you go co-op where everyone paid based on what they have there not percentage makes more sense.   My ISP being a small town is a CO-OP.   Our pay really is not high considering price of 1 gigabit internet.   And at end of their financial year I believe profits are split to it's "owners" which is everyone who uses it.  But considering you paid the money in the first place you don't really make anyting.

Just following up on the thread now... Do you want me to write some script for this? Would take maybe a day... I would just re-use the pool functionality from my app

Yeah it would be nice.

I am getting tired of clicking on thirty names and pasting shares once a day.
Takes a lot of time.

Can you PM me all the workers? I'll whip up something for just this use

I will send pm in the morning

That is awsome news!  Thank you crytoglance.  I have used your product  before it was a very nice product.

Watching the club through it would  be great!

Did they announce it or did Lketc?  I was thinking Lketc was one to actually announce a product.    And they did it very early, to early since they did not even have a chip at that point.

BW has announced a miner.  Still rendering stages aswell.  So there are two miners that have announced.

But we have yet to see either in real world.
5400  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Avalon 6 Vs Antminer S7, which one you will choose? on: October 17, 2015, 05:45:09 AM
In general.

Avalon didn't sell products in a loss, we just stop production when it's not competitive enough.
Then you see the Avalon4.1's cost very high so the retail price can not go down. (~2000RMB at last I remember)

For sp20s, I did a very carefully review on it. I think their marginal cost is close to ~2000USD. Any NREs are NOT included.
It means sp-tech sell them at about 15~20% of their cost.

Bitmain did a very good job on the tradeoff about price, performance, reliability and UE. This is worth learning for all miner manufacturers.

About avalon6S, I think it's a miner designed for big mining field. We did a lot of job on mining farm management systems in the past year.

I have a plan to do a low noise DCDC solution miner (Avalon6P )for home, but it's sure will have a higher price (30% cost increase) and
lower efficiency (5-8% decrease) compare to a "string" solution. Also it's far more difficult to design & manufacture.

So the reality let me pause.  Undecided

ng

I'm excited to see what you have coming.  I still have not parted from my 3 Avalon 4.1's.   I love them with Pi as controller and low sound, I had them in my bedroom.  Only big miner I have done this with.

Now they are in my mining area.  But I still love them.
