New difficulty is in: 1690906

Thats only about an 8% increase so not too bad.

I've taken my data from here http://blockexplorer.com/q/nethash/2016 and I recorded the ammount of days between difficulty changes starting May 26 to now.

13 days till increase
Tues, 19 Jul 2011

As you can see from that information the difficulty changed the fastest in mid June and now is slowly moving towards the 14 day goal. Unless I'm mistaken the difficulty for the most part is stabilizing and by august we will have extremely low increases. This of course will only holds true as long as the price doesn't sky rocket.

I'd like to hear what others think about this.

You might not want to wait too long for a good deal on a 5850. Remember that each day you wait, your are missing the opportunity to mine at what will probably be a lower difficulty level. Personally, I would go for a 5830 or even a 6950 if you can find a good deal on either of these now. If you can get them in Australia, I think the Corsair hx850 is a good option. If you check the review on hardwaresecrets.com, they say that this unit performs better than many 1000w units, and can easily pull 1000w from the wall. Essentially it is a 1000w supply, with the wattage rating reduced to get the silver 80+ rating.

I agree with Dargo, bitcoin mining is gambling, your either in it all the way or just watching from the sidelines, especially since difficulty increases about every 9 days. But with that said make sure its expendable income and not something you depend on. A 5850 will give you overclocked up to 350Mhashs  (0.225 BTC per day, bitcoinX.com) and maybe more but, I keep mine in around 330 just because my space is limited so heat builds up quickly.

So if there is a good deal and you can afford it jump in! But keep in mind to make back the cost of the 5850 is going to be a while (months).

While I agree the quicker you get in the better you are incorrect in expecting the difficulty to change every 9 days.

june 15 - june 24 is 9 days
june 24 - july 6 is 12 days
july 6 - july 19 is 13 days

As you can see the difficulty is slowly moving towards the 2 weeks its suppose to be. Unless some major positive event happens I believe the difficulty will remain at about this level.

Well If you can find a 5850 the lowest I saw for retail is 165 but I haven't seen it on sale in ages. A good power supply goes for around 200 dollars at 1000 watts.
so around 530ish at the low end.

at the end of the day, I can get the psu and 1 card now and add another later Smiley
anyone know where to get them?

Newegg for the power supply and no clue where you can get a decently priced 5850 atm. Also note  newegg has 1000 watt power supply for 100 dollars. I'd recommend against getting those and going for the 200 range.

Get two for that machine, a 1kw psu and some risers from cablesarus if you want to get the biggest bang out of that budget.
He wont be able to afford 2 more 5850's and a 1000 watt power supply on a budget of 400 dollars.

On 400 dollars all you can really afford is upgrading the psu slightly and adding another 5850.
548  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Mining Parties on: July 19, 2011, 02:01:24 PM
Windows 7 did this with much success, and I think it would work well for bitcoins too.

If you mean those windows 7 school rep's then you got to be joking Tongue There's no organization from what I saw.

One of my friends is one of those and microsoft sent him around 400 dollars in free money with no explanation on how to use it. He ended up just pawning out all the stuff to his friends. I ended up getting several free cd keys for windows 7 ultimate and some cash Cheesy
549  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: How to maximize a 5830? on: July 19, 2011, 01:40:04 PM
Try going to 1040/355 and use the phatk mod (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=23067.0).  I'm getting a stable 329-330 MH/s out of mine the last 24hrs.
I get 329 from 1030/300 you might want to try Diapolo's update to the kernel if you use phoenix.
550  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: too effing hot on: July 19, 2011, 01:32:18 PM
70F here today... felt warm to me.

i can't even convert F to °C. but there's only been 3 days this year at >30°C, so i'm fine.

That would be 21°C.

Here's been above 30°C high temperatures for the last week; next week is supposed to be above 35°C. And this is New Hampshire! Fortunately cleaning out my air conditioner's filter has changed my bedroom from Finnish sauna to Arctic circle. Grin

1x5770
Added anothe one 2 days later

Added 3x6970 3 weeeks later.

Next week I add 5 6970
A week later I add 33 6970

Ordered, paid Wink Waiting Wink
I hope you realize that you wasted a lot of money right? You could have gone with the 5830 @ 130 and still done way better or by waiting you could have received an even better deal. The only argument for getting the 6970 is because its going to be a part time mining rig part time gaming rig and its clear those wont be used for gaming.

I hope you realize that when you go scale (and this is jusst step 1) then availbility, rpeplaceability etc. are just as important. I would have gone with 6990 if I could, for density.

I am going to do that "commercial". Just opening a data center in an earea with acceptable power pricing for mining only (and renting out space for rigs or rigs).I would have to spend a lot more on infrastructure to get the same density. Right now we will put 2 cards into one rack unit height as it looks. Waiting for the prototype of the case.

The 5830 at 130 has been on sale for over a week nonstop so it is hardly unavailable. When looking at megahash per server you still would get more out of each server with a 5830 at 130 then a 6970 set up. While at that scale megahash per square foot may be an issue. This issue isn't that big though because it only takes about 44 5830's to produce the same amount of  megahash as 33 6970's thats only 11 more cards which is only about 3 more servers.

Got a 5830 in there finally.  300 hash.  Will be setting up a 4x5830 soon.

I want to give you some advice that I learned the hard way if your going to get 4 5830's don't leave them in a case or sandwiched on the mobo if you plan to overclock at all. I have to go to extreme lengths to keep my cards cool and I regret not going caseless.

It has to be over 1000 mhz because I've tested some of my cards back when I only had two in my case and on stock voltages at 1000 mhz I got 330ish but I cant run 4 cards coolly that way so I have to stick with around 305 Sad
555  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: If you're thinking buying mining hardware, read this first on: July 15, 2011, 04:23:54 PM
Wouldn't it be easier to use batteries designed for solar installations to charge at your employer and use them to power your rigs at night?  Depending on how meaty of an individual you are (or want to become) it may be possible to lug a few thousand kwhr a day out that way -- a 380 amp/hour, 20 hour 6 volt deep cycle battery is only about 110 pounds.

I like it Tongue Everything about this idea makes me laugh.

C'mon Leon, they've been in stock for 2 weeks!
Plus he linked to the more expensive one Tongue the other has free shipping.
557  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Cheapest smallest computer bootable from linux USB? on: July 14, 2011, 07:21:35 PM
I guess you would only need between 500 to a gig of ram. I'm not sure if you could get away with less. Other then the ram as long as your willing to deal with slowness you can go as cheep as you want.

I'm a little confused you sound like you want a prebuilt computer (a netbook?) and you want to run linuxcoin on it. If I may ask why?

559  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: vm machine holding wallet? on: July 14, 2011, 05:50:29 PM
This also doesn't really help you if you happen to execute a trojan within your virtual machine.
Well the only point of the vm would be to hold the wallet not to do anything else. Why would you search the web or add programs in it?

For over 100 dollars less you get 5 pci express on this board.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130274

Is 1 extra slot worth 100+ dollars?
