If the machine is old, go for LXDE, you can have the Gnome stuff there also, but it will improve the performance a lot.

What exactly do you wanna do?

This machine is running an Intel Quad Core Q9300 @ 2.5GHz with 8Gb of ram and a Radeon 4350 video card on an Intel DG45ID Motherboard
and currently running Kwheezy. Like I said in the OP I would like this build to be the main brain for my media center and torrent trackers. eventually I would like to set up FTP so that I could grab media from outside the sever. But for now Id like to keep it simple.

As far as documentation for linux goes its hard to beat the Arch wiki - https://wiki.archlinux.org/

To be honest though, if you are new to linux, Debian is maybe not the best way to go.

I chose it because it seems to be very stable and have tuns of support. Could you give me a suggestion if I where to go another direction?
Thanks for the help guys!

Yap, good enough.

Managing torrents, try deluge or vuze, for having the files available there a quite a few options, the easiest one SSH, you can try winscp for coping on windows, don't know how to mount on windows, but if on linux you can mount easily with sshfs.

You also have samba, http, ftp...

Ill have to check out deluge but I do not use vuze because of its security flaws. I have fooled around with Samba while trying to set up a NAS with the raspi. So I think I will try to recreate my success there, as far as my tracker go's I was leaning towards transmission.  After playing around in Kwheezy today I realized that I like it more then GNOME simply because its loaded with so many applications and plug-ins already.

Thanks again for all the feedback y'all. Ill keep plugging away and see what results I get.  Grin

So I am completely new to Debian the only knowledge I do have is very limited so some raspi projects. That being said I have recently built a Linux box form an old windows desktop that has been sitting idol in my office for some time. My intentions are to use this build to manage my torrents and share media with the other users in my network. I have decided to run either Gnome or Kweezy. I am wondering if some of you can point me to some resources that could help me with this project. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as I have been hitting a wall in my Google searches.

567  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Namecoin actually being used for anything significant? on: September 27, 2013, 05:57:04 PM
Open Transactions can use it as a master identity to validate your revokable nyms with. Though it can also use various other methods or you can just use the nym's hash directly without layers of signers validating it like a certificate authority.

This method of using namecoin as similar to a certificate authority is kind of generic too, you can use it for various things, like open signon systems to sign on to multiple sites and stuff like that.

That's something that I didn't know thanks! Pretty significant use other than .bit domains.  Wink
568  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: $6k to invest in miner today. DIY or Commercial? Suggestions? on: September 27, 2013, 04:28:54 PM
If every person that wants to mine instead decides to buy and hold. Never spend there coin only sell if the price rises. How do we expect the currency to grow? Who is spending this coin? It seems to me that one of the driving forces in the BTC world is mining equipment. I understand what you are saying about if I buy hardware it will never have a full return but it seems that there has to be a better investment technique than this simple answer to buy and hold. BTW not I am not saying to buy hardware and Im not telling anyone that they are wrong if they do or not, I simply do not see how the buy and hold approach will work if every person who wants to get into BTC just decides to buy some coin and never spend it.

[edit: I realized I was being snotty and standoffish removed that content, not looking to start a fight.]
569  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Is Namecoin actually being used for anything significant? on: September 27, 2013, 03:58:10 PM
As my Namecoin purse gets larger Im wondering, is Namecoin actually being used for anything significant? I know I can trade them for BTC but that seems lame. It just seems that nothing has really been done up to this point to further the project. Is anyone doing something worth looking into with Namecoin or should I just keep letting this stash get larger till some major developments are made?  Huh

2 way encryption carrier pigeons.

How many pigeons do you need to actually make this work? You need pigeons to send key exchange prior to sending the message. Also pigeons to proof of receive the message. you might need at least 12 pigeons to make this work. Also you need to be able to check if the pigeons have been compromise, such as pigeons from another source which pretend to me the sender or receiver. Also this will be seasonal, you will not be able to transfer any messages during the pigeon hunting season.  Grin

You forgot about the pigeons that check if the receiver is ready to receive. Cheesy

Exactly, even though it could be a good method for communication. But damn you will need lots of pigeons to send one message.  Cheesy

Well the pigeons only fly one way, back to their cope. So you would have to exchange birds with the person you want to talk to. They would receive there birds back with messages from you and visa verse. Getting a phantom bird wont happen. As far as a key you would just make one with your partner prior to sending birds. We where thinking of doing this as more of a hobbie/shtf thing. You can also eat the birds and eggs unlike chickens doves mature in 9 weeks. You could also race from long distances. Hunting season would be a challenge though...
Im guessing a decent flock would be adound 30-90 birds.

Im looking at your profile here at NSA HQ and because i dont like your views, i will disclose that you masturbate way too much to your wife, you also smoked some weed when you were young, are overweight and have back problems and this is going straight to your employer, who will have to pay a fortune in insurance in the future.
Good luck with your new life.

Employer? Thats laughable. Grin I work for no one cali has been good to me bud

Im looking for a secure way to communicate with long distance friends and colleagues. What are my options these days? Are there secure VOIPs chat channels or something compared to pgp (something less tiresome) ?

Standard email. Seriously. Nobody cares what you're saying. Not even, you know...
WRONG.

Here is something useful: http://www.prism-break.org/

So? Please tell me why I should care that my recommendation of a film to a friend resides as data on a harddrive in a basement in the middle of the desert, where upon nobody will ever read it.
Are you trolling? This thread is about secure ways, not about unsecure ways  Undecided No one cares about your film, but if you have to fight against industrial espionage then you need a secure way to communicate

No, I am not trolling. If you're involved in work in a high profile business, then secure communication matters. But is that the case for those here seeking secure communication? I'd be curious to hear the motivations.

We are chatting about several new start up business ideas and looking to be more secure about it. Not exactly high profile but still not something we want to be snooped on.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! Btw the pigeon thing is funny but it is something I have been talking about for about 2 years. I live in the stick and I would be cool to have a few friends with flocks to send messages back and forth.

1btc shipped for the lot, you go first or escrow.

Thank you for your offer, after some consideration I have deiced to decline. I would rather not go below .16 shipped. I think its a fair price at a 30% markdown from the retail price.

Oh come on , you can't compare train toy and this Cheesy this is the real deal Cheesy I would not mind spending that too Cheesy

If I had option of buying a toy train or feed the poor , I would select poor.
If I had option of buying usb miner that will never break even or feed the poor , I would select the poor.
If I had option of getting a boat or feeding the poor , WHERE IS MY BOAT ALREADY Cheesy

Know the difference , not everything is a useless hobby , but some stuff are obviously useless. The guy who spend 4500 for going around the beach looking for gold was a bad hobby (I dont care if you enjoy it , you are not a smart cookie if you do that ) , the guy who bought a boat is awesome. You should be able to see the difference between these two.

Who are you to tell people what is useless?
What charities do you contribute to?
How many of your days off have you spent at the shelter this month?
How many Xbox games do you have?
How many block erupters do you have?
Im so tired of little shitheads telling people they are stupid because they dont agree on how other people spend there money. Why the hell are you in this thread if you dont have something to contribute? And for the record I would rather wipe my ass with my money than give it to the drug addicted strung out meth heads in my town who spend all there money on crank. But I do donate my time to the SPCA  and other charities like The Unbroken Chain Foundation, Scaring the Children, The Bill Graham Foundation and SEVA.  I have also spent a small foundation on live music and vacations what kinda ROI will I get there besides life experience happiness and great times?
Keep sitting behind you screen telling people that they are stupid it seems to be making you happy and I suppose that could be a hobby.
579  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Raspi + D-link dub h-7+ asic erupters problem on: September 22, 2013, 05:40:56 PM
Im running 32 erupters on 4 dlink 7 ports and one 10 port off brand that hold 8 sticks on cgminer 3.1.1 with no problems highest errors I see are 2% but usually stays around 1%. I reboot about every 24hrs when I can, I sometimes see errors in one or more chips for more then a few secs if that happens I just reboot until it clears.

I know ckolivas and the other developers are trying their best at CGMiner and they've all done a great job. However, when people are saying 3.1.1 is more stable than 3.4.3, that's just a lot of revisions in between to go from stable to unstable. Everyone that's running CGMiner and it's 'stable' or 'without issues' (in regards to using USB Erupters) always states they are running 3.1.1. I know there's be some blame on libusb, but how is it 3.1.1 is more stable than 3.4.2 or 3.4.3 for one set of devices. It would be my basic assumption that something in the code base has been overlooked somewhere between 3.1.1 and where we are now.

I'm on the latest of BFGMiner, haven't had to restart in over 4 days (might be 5 days now), no weird reports on any numbers, everything is stable and doing it's job. It's my opinion to be efficient & things working correctly, you shouldn't have to restart every 24 hours or even every week/month.

I have left it up for days with no problems. I only restart because Im OCD and I like to fiddle with the miner.
