If there are any bounties for BitcoinSpinner improvements (new preferences icons Wink, more intuitive UI (did you know there is an actually working address book? It's very well hidden and once you know how it works, it works, although very very slow), … I would look into it again Wink

Hey Gizmo,

Thanks for the patch. I haven't looked into it in detail, but the screen shots look good. I'll dedicate some cycles to it tomorrow.

Regarding address book:
There is a huge Address Book button on the "Send" page, but it is disabled until you have addresses in it. I was under the impression that clicking the option button on the main page (and reveal the address book) was one of the first things a user would do on Android. Maybe I am wrong.
You mention that the address book is slow. What do you mean exactly? I have tested it on a pretty old Android 2.1 device, and to me it seems ultra fast.

In the settings I would just want a a checkbox "show confirmation count" that may be off by default, but in the end it's open source, so I'm sure a beautiful patch will get pulled happily Wink
Be my guest  Cheesy
Sad I guess I mentioned it before … I'm very surprised to see SVN. How do you do a pull request with SVN? Would you want a patch file and a revision number? Makes things more complicated, don't you think so?

It's not that complicated:
Get a copy of the code.
Make your change.
Send me a patch.

According to the comments, Bitcoin Wallet Balance is pretty useless. Thoughts?
That's only an address watcher. Great if you don't want to import the private key on your phone I guess...
The comments say that the app doesnt show incoming transactions, only outgoing ones, which makes it pretty lacky in my eyes. Havent tried it yet, though.

That's what I use it for, but now I'm using the blockchain app which you can import a watch only address.
Nice feature. Unfortunately the playstore tells me that my htc Wildfire is not supported. I took a glimpse at it during my last Bitcoin tx in Argentina though. It looked a bid dull and didnt show how many confimations any given tx had (Bitcoin Spinner doesnt either though).
BitcoinSpinner does not show the number of confirmations as a number, but it displays transactions with less than 6 confirmations in grey, and unconfirmed transactions as "(unconfirmed)". Also, the front page shows "Coins on the way to you: XXX BTC" and "Coins you are sending: XXX BTC" if you have unconfirmed coins to/from your wallet.
My goal with BitcoinSpinner is not to make a tool for the tech savvy, but for average end users, so I try to distill the information into something more user friendly.

I understand that. But recently while taking my phone to a face to face exchange of BTC for fiat, I found it quite bugging, that you couldnt tell how many confirmations have actually been done to your transaction. That way usability is largely reduced for daily exchanges and trades if both parties dont have time to wait for 6 confirms (like only a lunch break to spend), but dont want to jeopardize their money with 0-confirms either. A simple display of the number of confirms would alleviate such concerns a lot (maybe greyed out out or in advanced mode only,..)

To make it fool proof, you could also display the number of confirms with traffic lights (text displayed in brackets):

0 Confirm: Questionmark (unconfirmed, please wait)
1-2 Confs: Red light (1 confirmation save to spend if small amount of money) or (2 confirmations save to spend if small amount of money)
3-4 Confs: Yellow light (3 confirmations save to spend if medium amount of money) or (4 confirmations save to spend if medium amount of money)
5-6+ Confs: Green light (5 or more confirmations, Save to spend!)

In the settings I would just want a a checkbox "show confirmation count" that may be off by default, but in the end it's open source, so I'm sure a beautiful patch will get pulled happily Wink

564  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: SERIOUS VULNERABILITY related to accepting zero-confirmation transactions on: January 15, 2013, 11:41:09 AM
They are not related to the vulnerability discussed in this thread.
Your bitcoin node is complaining about transactions that do not meet the minimum relay fee. So basically what it tells you is that it will not forward the transactions to other nodes in the network. These transactions may however still reach a miner and get included in a block as some nodes have other relay policies and/or are connected directly to a miner who includes any transaction regardless of fees. This is for instance the case with the first one on your list: ee1a7973ffe7f2515f6c12526b90f6255ca13bbe776e082bf0178d65663eeba9

567  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Hardware Wallet Roundup on: January 13, 2013, 05:11:27 PM
The closest so far to a mass market solution, incorporates a display, keypad, and radio (custom ISM band protocol.) Unfortunately it is fairly limited in terms of transaction I/O, requiring a radio gateway or another bitcoincard wherever funds need to be transferred. Possibly transactions could be delivered over giant QR codes.

We (people hanging around #bitcoin-dev) also believe this device leaks it ECDSA private keys.

Let me give a little more context on this. In the bitcoincard demo at the workshop last year in Vienna bitcoincard used the a fixed constant K when generating signatures. Also, the private keys were generated simply by hashing the 'nickname' of the card. These things were done in order to generate predictable outputs for testing, yes, this is very useful when debugging hardware and embedded software. This is obviously not something you should do in production as both scenarios will make it trivial to reveal the private keys.
This will obviously not be the case once they hit the market.

570  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Ubuntu for smartphones explode Bitcoin? on: January 04, 2013, 04:18:27 PM
Nope
Right. I see no reason why this would affect Bitcoin in any way. If the OP is thinking running a full node on a smartphone then think again. Many older desktop computers already have a hard time syncing from scratch.

I'd imagine this should be moved to Meetups?
Wut?
This is not just a meetup. This is probably the biggest in-person Bitcoin event of the year.

who can tell the number of transactions bitcoin handled? blockchain.info currently seems to be a little out of sync.
...

As of block 215023 there are 10679712 confirmed transactions.

I travel to the US from the EU a few times every year. The worst part is the long flight. Otherwise apply for ESTA well in advance (it is valid for a year or two) and fill in the waiver on the plane. The immigration queue varies, but I'd say that it is roughly 20 minutes. Be polite and honest with the immigration officer. Carry at least one credit card and 100$ in cash (less than $10000). Don't say that you will pay for your stay in bitcoin. Someone on the forum tried that once and was sent home without leaving the airport.  Grin

The 9 hours time difference is a bitch and turns me into a zombie, but it wears off after two days for me. I always try to arrive a few days before I have to deliver.

BitcoinSpinner v0.8.1b is out:
 - Fixed typo in German translation
 - Fixed a fee validation bug that occurs when sending a transaction with many small inputs. The effect has been observed to prevent you from sending your last funds when you have many small inputs. Thanks to Object 2212 for helping me test and debug it.

It might take an hour before you can update it from the Android Market.

Enjoy, and Happy New Year!

I've been playing around with the export and backup option and my private key could have been compromised. How do I generate a new address?

So far everything seems nice and easy, and I would like to generate a new address without having to delete the app's date and probably losing my address book.

And second question: Why does the backup option not provide the private address? What exactly is the BSB string and how is it generated?

To generate a new address you can uninstall and re-install. This may sound very limiting, but with BitcoinSpinner I am very keen on keeping it simple. Unfortunately this also means that you loose your address book  Sad
There is one other solution. If you have a separate phone you can make install BS there and make a backup which you restore on the other phone. This way you change the address (and private key) without loosing your address book.

Importing private keys has not been possible so far because of limitations on the server that backs BitcoinSpinner. However, now where BS has a different backend system this is no longer the case, so maybe it is time for me to add the Import Private Key feature.

The BSB string is a random 256-bit seed which BitcoinSpinner uses to generate two deterministic keys. One is the ordinary Bitcoin private key, the other is a key which was used for the old backend system for authentication purposes. The authentication key is no longer used.

It does not have to be radical collecting all dust in a single transaction but have a tendency to use at least as many inputs as outputs.
I like this. This way you will slowly collect dust over time. You could make it in such a way that whenever possible you squeeze in additional inputs if it does not affect the fee.

Is there a document that explains all the api calls?
All the high level functions are described in this interface: http://code.google.com/p/bccapi/source/browse/trunk/bccapi/src/com/bccapi/ng/api/BitcoinClientApi.java

The SimpleClient example shows how you can create your own wallet with a few pages of code: http://code.google.com/p/bccapi/source/browse/trunk/bccapi/src/com/bccapi/ng/example/SimpleClient.java

There is also a short example of how you can construct a transaction from scratch and broadcast it here: http://code.google.com/p/bccapi/source/browse/trunk/bccapi/src/com/bccapi/ng/example/CustomBuiltTransaction.java

In short bitlib is a general purpose toolbox for working with transactions etc, and bccapi is my propritary server that allows you to query/broadcast to the bitcoin network.

Let me know if you have any questions.
580  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Summary of the events last night - And an apology. on: December 19, 2012, 10:04:36 PM
Hello,

As some of you may have noticed, there was a bit of a mess on the forums last night. In a thread last night, we released customer information in attempts to publicly shame a scammer.

The community has been outraged at this invasion of privacy.

On behalf of the Bitcoin Store, I would like to apologize.

First, to Nikolaos (Nethead), I apologize for the fumbled, and crude, handling of this situation. Everyone involved at the Bitcoin Store is a hardcore believer in Bitcoin. What some of us saw, true or not, is that someone was attempting to harm his store, and because the store's sole purpose is to promote Bitcoin, we saw this harm as an assault on Bitcoin itself. Our actions were irrational and unprofessional. We handled the situation poorly. I'm sorry.

I was reading through the threads and noticed this:

Quote
As soon as this ends i give up the bitcoin idea entirely

All my bitcoins will be given away
I will start a thread sometime later today or max tommorow, This right here got me

Please don't leave Nethead. Scammer or not, Bitcoin needs people like you just as much as Bitcoin needs businesses like ours. We're sorry for this mess up, don't let it spoil Bitcoin for you.

Second, to the rest of the Bitcoin community. Today you got to see that everyone is indeed fallible. We apologize for these mistakes. You have trusted us with your business and today we failed to act in the utmost care required by that trust. I would say that everyone has their off days, but we're not going to make excuses. We screwed up, we'll work to make this right with everyone.

We have taken the following steps to stop this from ever occurring again:

Please reply with any further suggestions you have for us.

Thank you,
-Jon
Thank you.
