5721  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitcoin withdrawal fee is damn high in exchanges! on: February 09, 2020, 02:41:13 PM
What are you trying to trade? BTC and fiat or BTC or altcoins? Although centralized exchanges are awful for this kind of thing, even $12 for a withdrawal is a bit much for them. Take a look at this list: https://withdrawalfees.com/coins/bitcoin. There are plenty of exchanges which will let you withdraw for free or only a couple of dollars. All they will ask in return is to know everything about you and for you to upload details of your entire life, copies of all your ID, passport, driver's licenses, employment status, payslips, and tell them why you are buying bitcoin, where your money is coming from, where it is going, and what you are going to spend it on. Oh, and have the ability to freeze your account and steal your coins if they don't like the answers you give them. Roll Eyes

Alternatively, if you want to have free withdrawals, want to submit absolutely zero KYC information, and improved security by keeping control over your own coins, then start using a decentralized exchange like BISQ to trade peer to peer with other users.

Is that chart updated in "real time" or close to it.
I don't use exchanges that much, but I have noticed that some do vary the fee. Sometimes it's easy to see why, like many unconfirmed transactions and they usually have their withdraws in a block or 2. Others I think it's just because they feel like it.

The sad part is that there are people who still follow him.
BSV is up something like 12% in the last 24 hours. I just don't get it.

I mean, I do get it there are people who will follow a con till the end of time, I just don't understand how they can be that dumb.

So, I posted this reply last night and figured what the heck lets see if it gets any traction:

Thinking about it; someone should probably start a thread where everyone here can post their LN info for other people here to open channels to.
Kind of keeping it in the family.

So here is the thread with my node :-)

There were also a few small ones that got "hacked"
I will post some more if I can find my notes but off the top of my head I know this one:

Ok guys my lightning node is up and running. Any strategies while opening channels? I'm not doing it for profit (i guess you can't make any significant profits with that low fees anyway) so wonder how much to put in a channel. I won't have any transactions from my side in the beginning, it will be only to interconnect different nodes and create better routes, later i may open some channels for transactions as well?

How about paying for campaigns trough LN? What you think, opening a channel with the campaign manager and close it when the campaign is over, just to boost a bit the LN?

You can always open one to me:

5728  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: D3 flashing TO L3, L3 BOARD INSIDE D3 on: February 07, 2020, 03:45:39 PM
According to Bitmain yes it's the same board for the L3,L3+,L3++,D3,A3,X3

https://shop.bitmain.com/product/detail?pid=000201807311735163200cr1JTsS068C

So all you would need to do is flash the firmware you need.
You may or may not need to use the SD card method depending on the revision of the firmware that is already on it.
There are guides on the Bitmain site.

-Dave

Roll Eyes oh dude oh dude XD

Yes this boards have the same Controller board and thats it.
The asic boards are different. Because ASIC, the name say it XD

So no you canīt make an D3 to a L3.

You are correct. I misread it. I was thinking he was asking about swapping a dead control board for a good one between units.
Something I have had to do a lot on Bitmain gear Sad
This is what happens when you read & post on mobile while standing on a train.

5730  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: $37,000,000 in Bitcoin (BTC) for Sale by US Government on: February 07, 2020, 01:47:44 PM
That's a lot of millions of dollars worth of bitcoin, I wonder why they didn't decide to at least try keep a little of it. Can't remember now but isn't there also a government somewhere with a lot of stash of seized btc that they supposedly haven't sold yet? Would be incredible revenue if the moonshot happens for btc!

The US Government itself keeps very little of what they seize. Cars / boats / homes / gold toilets from rappers all go up for auction.
Small local and state governments may or may not keep stuff, but for the most part "cash is king" for the government.
Now, a lot of times they might use the car / boat / home  etc. as part of an investigation or undercover work but eventually most of it will wind up on the auction block.

5731  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Bitpie wallet Version Upgrade & New Function on: February 07, 2020, 12:59:34 PM
v4.5.2 Update.
How would it be possible to send $USDT w/o #BTC and #ETH as miner/gas fee?

Now Yes in Bitpie!😃

You can also buy packages based on your own special needs.
Upgrade to v4.5.2 you can find the "Discount Package" of USDT (omni& ERC20) miner/gas fee.

Is this is just a pre-payment? What happens if fees spike like they did in late 2017? It looks like you can buy now, and if fees really do go up a lot and stay there for a while come out ahead if you need to send during that time. Or are you just taking the fee up front dividing by 10 or 30 or whatever and using that as the fee?

5732  Other / Politics & Society / Re: POST BREXIT FUTURE FOR THE UNITED KINGDOM & THE EU on: February 07, 2020, 12:43:14 PM
I really try to say out of the political side of the forum, but since I just had to deal with it:

GB for the moment is shooting themselves in the foot by dragging this out. I just helped a client of a client begin to do some IT work for their move out of GB (some place just outside of London) to another city just outside of Paris (where they already had a small office). Why? Not because they gave a crap about Brexit one way or another. But they have been trying to figure out what the next move would be. Where / when / what kind of deal and the owner just finally got fed up and said. Screw it, we have to renew our lease and some other contracts in 90 days. Lets just move and not deal with it.

If he knew what was going to happen he would have been happy to stay. But, since nobody knows 100% what is going to happen it's easier just to pack and move. It's just office workers so there is nothing to move in terms of machinery.

-Dave

Ouch. Just thinking about how expensive this is to have to do, this is probably brutal for a business owner and has been freaking him out for months now.

Just cause I'm curious, was the client also living outside of Paris or was the office just for workers or something along those lines? Cause moving from London to Paris (I know you said outside of Paris) is going to be rough if you double the amount of things to think about, as you're not only dealing with your business but with your home and family moving as well.

How expensive is such a move? All in all that is.

Since I was not directly involved with the owner and only had a few conversations with him (client of a client as I said) I don't know everything but:
He is single, no idea about an apartment / home / or anything in the UK has a small apartment in France.

He moved out of furnished office space for about 25 people and the place they moved into is for about 40 it is much bigger then he needs / wants but it was in the same building that his original people in France were in so they just let him change his lease to the new space.

For the move, costs on the tech side, not that much. It's 2020; his phone server is cloud based, he document server is cloud based, it's was more of pick up 25 PCs put them in boxes, ship, unbox and get back to work. (as soon as I had the bigger better VPN between my client and his new service setup).

Can't speak to the cost of moving workers. Don't know if he did or just hired new ones or what. Did not come up. Yeah, that makes me sound harsh but all I cared about was can the new place communicate with SonicWall here in the US.

Biggest freak out for him was the number of his clients around the world that basically said that if nothing is firm and in place by the time contract renewal with him comes up they were not going to renew with him or even discuss it, but use a different service elsewhere. So he avoided the issue by moving.

-Dave

Edit: and to all the people in the UK and France. I don't remember the names of the places he moved from / to. It was like they are moving to XYZ and I said "Where?" and the reply was "Oh, it's about 10 miles out of Paris"

5734  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Kraken Security Labs just 15 minutes to hack both of trezor's crypto hardware on: February 05, 2020, 07:59:18 PM

It's a 15 minute attack, so if they know you have it they can probably get in and get it and get your seed (if your don't have a strong password) in less time then it takes to get dinner. Depending on who you ask a 8 character password is minutes.

-Dave

More. Plus preparation for the physical attack, it would take around 30 minutes or more, not including brute-force attack on the passphrase.

Which is still not a lot of time so 30 minutes to get and attack it and however long to get your PW. Unless its over 10 characters is still in the low hours with powerful enough HW.

Remember this is a somewhat targeted attack. I have to know beforehand that

1) You have / use BTC
and
2) You use a trezor

So yeah, if you never take it off except to shower that is one thing. If you are like most people and leave it someplace (even what you think is secure) for a little longer then you might become a victim. Unless you have a secure password.

5735  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitseed alternative on: February 05, 2020, 12:58:46 PM
If you can make a little profit out of it (or make sure you don't incur losses), then it's a viable project to continue; to market. There are altcoins out there providing "staking boxes" and they are all nicely packaged raspberry pis for sale around $100 equivalent, which is more or less, at cost, including all the hardware, a nice case, memory card, power supply and pre-installed OS and software.

The biggest issue is the drive space & power.
You need a good SSD or a really good spinning drive and a more powerful RPi to make a BTC node. Or a micro PC.
The cost is going to put you in the $190 range more or less before your time. Just look at what is needed for the minimal Raspiblitz.
You can get away with a lot less on most alts.

5736  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Kraken Security Labs just 15 minutes to hack both of trezor's crypto hardware on: February 03, 2020, 11:00:44 PM
Although, the "requiring physical access to the device" part makes this "attack" somewhat theoretical for most people... Tongue

Yes and no.
Where is your hardware wallet? Is it always attached to you? Or, is at home while you are at work?
Do you bring it with you on vacation or is it in a safe at home? etc.

It's a 15 minute attack, so if they know you have it they can probably get in and get it and get your seed (if your don't have a strong password) in less time then it takes to get dinner. Depending on who you ask a 8 character password is minutes.

5738  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Kraken Security Labs just 15 minutes to hack both of trezor's crypto hardware on: February 02, 2020, 01:34:56 PM
So because Ledger, their main competitor is saying that (without any proof) it's necessarily true?
Ledger disclosed the attack to Trezor. Trezor's response was essentially "You need physical access and mitigated by a passphrase". If Ledger had lied and completely made it up, would Trezor not just have said that? It would be pretty irresponsible of Ledger to release the actual set up they used.

Other people did, It's out there if you look.
Now this next little bit REALLY makes it look like I shilling for Coinkite / Coldcard but a blurb from their marketing:

Quote
SECURE ELEMENT FOR KEY STORAGE
We find it a quite scary that some Bitcoin wallets trust the main microprocessor with their most valuable secrets. Instead, Coldcard uses a Secure Element to protect your Bitcoin.

Specifically, the Coldcard (Mk3) uses Microchip's ATECC608A to store the critical master secret: the 24-word seed phrase for your BIP32/BIP39 wallet.

This little chip is very powerful. Communication is controlled by complex challenges and SHA-256 responses which prevent replay and eavesdropping. The secure element enforces cryptographically, that the attacker must know the PIN to access the secrets. An attacker cannot brute-force combinations or replay a previous login sequence. This remains true even if they removed the chip from the board or fully-replaced the firmware in the main microprocessor. In fact, even with the secure element removed from the system, and all the secrets of the main micro fully-known, the attacher would still only get 13 tries before the secure element bricks itself! (Don't worry, this counter is reset every time you login correctly.)

So if they can do it why can't others?

They also have the self destruct pin option and the sign with SD card so it's always airgaped option.

I would say it's not that difficult, but I am sure it is. But if they can do it other people can too. That is if they actually care enough to try.

On another note they also have a nice document about PIN use and some thoughts about how / why it works the way it does:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Coldcard/firmware/master/docs/pin-entry.md

5739  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: February 02, 2020, 01:16:36 PM
Hi Dave,
Well that is annoying. I can't believe that nobody thought someone might not want to have some unknown node open a massive channel to them.

Why not ? A channel opening to you does not require anything from your side (apart few bytes of RAM but....), people usually strive to have big inbound channels.

99% of the time it probably would not matter. I was doing an test of some stuff during the week [yeah I know use testnet for testing] and 3 places had opened MASSIVE channels to me. I thought / figured at the time it was a mistake. In the time I have been playing around with LN in TOTAL I have not sent & received in total as much as any one of those channels. And then an hour or 2 later they closed them.

I mentioned it to someone Friday who said, "yeah I had the same thing happen a week or 2 ago" he also mentioned that it did not appear on 1ml or other LN explorers. I did not check on mine. Just big open followed a bit later by a big close. So somebody is playing around with something. Which is fine but, I just did not expect it and was wondering if there was a way to prevent it.

Seems to be something that should be looked at. Unless I am missing something it does seem to open up the possibility of abuse.
FWIW it worth that's again somehing that can be done with C-lightning plugins, it's called the `openchannel` hook.

That is probably what I am look for. Thanks.

Fee like I am talking to myself a bit here in this thread. But Casa announced earlier today that they will no longer be shipping the Casa Node but will be open sourcing it.

https://blog.keys.casa/casas-focus-on-bitcoin-security/

So, it looks like your only choice for a "node in a box" for now is going to be https://lightninginabox.co/

Yeah, building it yourself is not that big a deal but sometimes it's nice to just get something in a box that you plug in and have work.
