5761  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Regarding Steamtyme's list of competitive hardware on: January 22, 2020, 11:22:36 AM
The other factor I think coming into play is support.
Do you think Bitmain wants to support 5000 users who bought 1 or 2 or 3 miners each. Or one big player that bought 15000?
Customer service and support is not cheap.
Then add on the fact that now you are dealing with home users who may or may not have as good power as a big industrial data center so now you have to deal with more repair issues.

The R4 was great, the a741 was great as was the a821. But sadly I think those days are gone.

What I would like to see is them partnering with someone like sidhack who they sell all their last generation chips to who produces a slower but quiet miner.

That or towards the end of the run start making the same miner with fewer boards (like many of us are doing with the S9) that can run cooler.
Sell them cheap to move stock of the old boards and chips with a 14 or 30 day DOA warranty and be done. You can get away with that with an old gen product for $249 you can't do that with a current gen for $2999 because, nobody is going to buy something that expensive that they plan to run for 18+ months with no support. For $249 a lot of people will roll the dice.

Just my view.

5762  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN] CoinMap 1.0 is back! on: January 21, 2020, 10:09:08 PM
Did a bit of testing.
Yeah, you can really feel it's lack of performance on slower connections.

You might want to work on a way to load the data differently. Don't ask me what it is but there has to be a better way. Home FiOS is great. 4G access point, pretty good. Trying at the fringe of Wi-Fi where I can still get to something like news.google.com in several seconds I can feel and see coinmap start to crawl.

5763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Fatal error on: January 21, 2020, 09:38:44 PM
As far as I know it stores nothing in the registry.
It does...

Go checkout: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Bitcoin\Bitcoin-Qt

There are a couple of "proxy" and "tor" related settings there... although I believe they should be reflected in the "Settings -> Options -> Network" tab within the GUI.

Sorry, poorly worded.
As far as I knew it stored nothing about networking or peers in the registry. I thought it was all QT / GUI settings.
My bad.

Either way I still do not think it's the issue here.

5764  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: I learned about a cold wallet called SafePal.Please help! How about this wallet? on: January 21, 2020, 09:21:30 PM
I was wondering why there aren't more hardware wallets being discussed in this section, because there are quite a few on Amazon that look pretty but are really expensive.  Seems like the older, more well-established ones are the most popular and I totally understand why.  I'd be tempted to buy something like a SafePal wallet if I knew it worked well, but with no track record....it's tough to justify.

Same as Bitcoin vs alts? Why would you take the risk on something that isn't battle tested and subject to the obsessive scrutiny of thousands of its users?

I'll be the first to admit I'm clueless about this stuff. I'll stick with the gear that has the most clued up people keeping it honest.
It's kind of an endless loop.
If you are new how to you gain traction in this sector.
Design / build / implement. That's simple.
Now you have to prove its safe. (open source hardware / software) but then what?
How do you get a foot in the door with the big players?

Try what nc50lc said to change in your conf and when the reindex is finished rename the peers.dat to peers.old
I have seen my nodes try to connect to machines that I no longer have on the network because it saw one of them 6 months ago and for some reason it still thinks it's there.
As far as I know (And I admit I know little about it) that is the only place outside of DNS seed nodes it looks for other nodes.
I opened an issue on git years ago about it but they closed it so I let the issue drop.

-Dave

Do you mean Bitcoin Core trying connect to other node with .onion domain (from peers.dat) even though Bitcoin Core isn't configured to use Tor?
Yep. From what happened to me.
Network 1= 192.168.1.x
Network 2 = Cable Public IP
Network 3 = 192.168.2.x
Network 4 = FiOS Public IP

All in the same physical location with some routing between the 2 privates through a sonic wall.

FiOS and the 192.168.2.x stack went away.
The front end sonic wall was replaced
And in my logs I still saw the nodes on cable / 192.168.1.x trying to reach the 192.168.2.x and the FiOS public.

Everyone said I had something in my .conf file or someplace else. I had at that point NO conf file. When I got rid of the peers.dat it all went away.
Everyone said I was wrong, I threw my hands up and walked away. So, I was just wondering if yeah, if it thought that site.onion was still good for some reason it was trying to reach it. Other then that I have no idea on the errors.

5766  Economy / Reputation / Re: Product Specification "Manipulation", is it ok? on: January 21, 2020, 11:54:11 AM
It's kind of a tough call.
Looking at it from the car world:
The Dodge Demon was advertised as having 840HP and 770 Foot Pounds of torque. *

The * fine print being, you had to use stupid expensive 100+ octane fuel, swap out the air filter for a high flow one, swap out the ECM and change a dash panel.

So did Dodge lie?

I would like to think (I know I would be wrong but let me be happy in my own head) that people in the car world looking at it knew this. Same way I would like to think that people buying a miner know the true speed.
Is it scummy, yes. But it's been going on everywhere for years.
I would not do it and I would like to think the people I deal with would not do it, but it's still in spec.

Same question a bit different. I had a L3+ I put together out of the best boards from several L3+ units. Was over 10% faster then spec. Would selling it as a 550 instead of a 504 be a lie?

As I said in the 1st line it's a tough call.

This could turn into a long rambling post from me but:

I have a chunk of money in some senior healthcare REITs (senior housing facilities, skilled nursing facilities, etc.) most of them pay between 4% to 6%
It's a bit cynical but the US population is aging and they are going to be more and more people going to those facilities. Also, they are fed tax free.

Not advice just opinion.

No, Win 7 going away would not cause any of the issues.
Keeping a wallet on an unsupported OS might have some security implications down the road but as of now its just as updated as any OS.

Did the reindex finish OK?

The tor issue is strange if you do not it configured anywhere.
Could you have set it up for an earlier version and forgotten and it's just been copied from update to update?

Other then that I have no idea.

-Dave

Reindex is still going well. Yeah i had tor before but it's out of the config. Not sure where it's getting it from, maybe registry.

Maybe i need to explicitly disable tor. Anyone know the config file options?

As far as I know it stores nothing in the registry.

Try what nc50lc said to change in your conf and when the reindex is finished rename the peers.dat to peers.old

Looking at this in your log file:

Quote
2020-01-19T23:27:07Z ERROR: ReadBlockFromDisk: Errors in block header at FlatFilePos(nFile=1932, nPos=8)
2020-01-19T23:27:07Z *** Failed to read block
2020-01-19T23:27:07Z Error: A fatal internal error occurred, see debug.log for details

It looks like your blocks are corrupted (not your wallet)
Try to start bitcoin-qt  with the -reindex command line option.
Depending on your hardware it can take a while.

Might be a fluke, might be your drive is going.

You have a backup of your wallet.dat file correct?

5771  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: BITCLUB NETWORK: THE MAIN SCAMMERS BUSTED! Who's next? WELL HELLO, CSW... on: January 19, 2020, 10:06:08 PM
If Bitmain are being investigated by the DoJ in relation to BitClub Network, it's not neccessarily for
Bitmain selling huge amount of equipment to ponzi scheme BitClub with Bitmain’s Yoshi Goto playing key role!
which, in itself, isn't illegal.
As this article says
Quote from: Google
However, taking a step back ten thousand, even if Yoshi Goto is from Bitmain and provides mining rigs and mining pool operations to BitClub, he is only selling knives. The scammer is BitClub after all.
Conspiring with them to deceive and defraud investors by disguising the true benficiaries of BCPool hashrate would probably be a different matter.
I think that the wannabe Jason Bourne (Weeks) will squeal like a pig to keep his priviledged ass out of jail thru plea bargaining.
Who he implicates and what topics were discussed at various documented meetings with the highest level Bitcoin movers and shakers will be interesting...

That is a tough call.
Here in the US suppliers and others are rarely targeted for investigation. Because it's a very tough sell to a jury.
Do you go after the people they rented office space from? The data center who leased them space? etc.

It's easy to say that they knew, it's difficult to prove.

5772  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is double spending easy to do? Burguer king accepting zero confirmation transact on: January 19, 2020, 07:24:17 PM
If you do not accept RBF (Replace By Fee) transactions at the POS counter then double spending should not be a concern.
If- you do then it's a risk.
If you not at a retail / POS situation then it's no concern. If you order a laptop from me odds are I am going to have many confirmations before I get it in the hands of UPS  FedEx / whoever.

5773  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Advice on Raspberry pi hardware for running full BTC node on: January 19, 2020, 07:17:05 PM
The other issue with going with laptops instead of the micro desktops is that laptops are really not designed to run 24/7/365.
Yes you can do it, but it's not a great idea.

There are also some things you can do with a RPi that you cannot do with a small desktop in terms of placement.

Side note:
I stuck a RPi 4 with a USB SSD in my suitcase and setup a raspiblitz lighting node in my hotel room.
It was synced when I left my house so it just had about 10 hours of catching up to do [which did take a long time since the Wi-Fi in the hotel sucks] but yes I did do it.
Smaller then a laptop, lighter then a laptop and entirely a waste but I did get it up and running.

5774  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN] CoinMap 1.0 is back! on: January 19, 2020, 07:06:53 PM

Yes, it pulls all data during the first load.
If you have an Android smartphone and you need to know bitcoin venues during your business trip you could consider to install Bitcoin Map. It uses the same data.

Although that is good in *theory* when siting on slow hotel wi-fi with no other option it really is not the best.
At least put up a bit of text that tells a visitor that so they (me) don't hit refresh waiting for it to load.

Seriously, I feel like I am on 1995 dial up speed where I am.

Very slow loading for me at 1st.
I am on a business trip and wanted to see if there was anything nearby, gave up waiting and went for a walk around the hotel.
Came back a while later and it was fine.

Other pages were good.

Is it trying to pull a ton of data during the 1st load?

I refuse to believe anyone is stupid enough to actually believe this nonsense, and the BSV shills are just trying to pump it to offload their bags.

Some people stood up and supported Enron / MCI / Countrywide Mortgage even after the end was known.
Hell I know someone who was probably the last one out of the local Countrywide office.

So, don't discount how blind and stupid people are.

It's magical internet money we are talking about here so it's a bit worse.

With the above being said, anyone who has believed and still believes CW is a fracking idiot.

Phil, yeah I agree get a PC, but it's fun to tinker.
The other issue is that in reality that the cost of a SSD is more then the PC or RPi.
Yes, either way you can get a spinning drive but the performance on the cheap ones is meh at best and the better ones are back to not being cheap.

5779  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: WANRNING! Do Not Buy Antminer S9k on: January 17, 2020, 09:22:27 PM
Yes it sucks but can you mix and match boards to get a fully working units?
If you do that and then scrap the rest of the hash boards and sell the controllers you might be able to recoup a bit of your loss.
All the while screaming at Bitmain for some sort of a credit.

I really think both of the below coolers fall into the category of just because you can does not mean you should.
But, yeah the name brand adapters do tend to have better power then the generic ones.
Telling people they are not good is one thing, going "look 1 in 4 did not make the night and the best one still had power issues" makes it a bit more obvious.

Makes you wonder how many RPi issues we have discussed over the years fall into bad power / bad SD

-Dave

Another thing that helps take the load off the initial download process is do it on your main machine then just copy the data to the PI HD I found this to be much better than leaving the PI to download the chain.

On the cooling side I have noticed some liquid cooling kits and some processor coolers like below, This one is called the Ice Hat seems to have had good reviews in the space and relatively cheap too

I think now we are seeing kit's like this come out the next round of PI may just come with some additional cooling and some more power I hope
