Win 7 should be fine unless you have some personal preference why you don't want to use it. I sure as hell would take it over Vista or W8! But that is another discussion entirely  Shocked

every driver for catalyst has quit working upon install.

This is common and why I suggested the 3rd party driver uninstaller: it will remove all versions of all ATI/AMD software and files.

in the process of finding now.

Still nothing. Even after the 3rd part uninstaller. 12.8 crashes as well.

Well this is starting to get a bit annoying isn't it. Can you install windows to another boot device and try a fresh windows install + fresh driver install. Got a spare HDD laying around? Alternatively you could try a linux based miner though I do not have much experience with those and probably can't recommend one to you.

Other than software the only thing I can think of in terms of hardware might be a problem with the second PCI-e slot or motherboard in general, have you ever tested the system with just one card installed: in the second slot? (ie. remove the 'first' card that is probably running your display output).

As far as I can tell one of two things is happening: either you have some kind of corrupt install or problem(s) with the software environment that is causing the installer to crash, or, the installer is crashing as it tries to detect the hardware, which may have a problem, causing it to crash. Either way I hope the suggestions above can help.

good day are these good for trade the Btc...Ira

Most altcoins can be traded on exchanges such as Vircurex and btc-e. There are others but those are the ones that see higher volume at moment.

Do you have a watt meter and could measure the power consumption after the overclock?
587  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: USB ASIC MINER on: July 05, 2013, 10:58:01 PM
If you have proof you should look into using the trust feedback system to let others know more easily that he is apparently dodgy.

Yeah try 12.8 I have heard of issues with some peoples hardware and the 13.x drivers. Use a 3rd party driver cleaner to remove leftover files after uninstall. Atiman Uninstaller has worked for me in the past.
589  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: warehouse or office space for setting up mining equipment on: July 05, 2013, 09:52:28 AM
Yes move to Iceland and setup your rigs in a geothermal power plant.

As a more serious suggestion, you might want to look at factory / light industry type commercial spaces. These will be more likely to have the power requirements you need, but ensure that they have single phase power that meets your requirements (ie. not just a lot of 3 phase). Plus, there will be plenty of space and you wont have complaints from anyone about a huge number of high speed fans running 24/7.
590  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Motherboard with 3 x PCIEx16 Slots or x1 is ok? on: July 05, 2013, 09:43:56 AM
Hey dude, I am running a Gigabyte H61MA-D3V motherboard with 3x Gigabyte 7950.  No powered risers and works fine, has done so for the last 3 months.  One card in the x16 with a x16->x1 unpowered riser cable, the other 2 in the x1 slots with the same x16->x1 unpowered riser cables.

HD 7950: Thermal Design Power: 200 watts
HD 5970: Thermal Design Power: 294 watts

Because all consumed electricity is converted to heat the TDP gives a good estimate of power consumption at stock settings.

However OP can probably manage a substantial overclock from his 5970's because the card is essentially two underclocked 5870's in one. As a result the power consumption will easily exceed 300 watts per card.

I would recommend powered risers.

(Does anyone here have powered risers on their 5970's and is willing to connect a multimeter up to the riser power cable and measure the current? Then we could find out exactly how close to the rated specification (75 w per PCI-e slot) the motherboards have to dish out. Of course I suppose it will vary with the design of each motherboards power circuitry but it would still be interesting.)

Move to Greenland and see how quickly you can melt a glacier with them.
592  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 0 shares after like 3 hours on a 6950 on: July 05, 2013, 09:31:51 AM
12.8 works nicely. Be sure you do a driver cleanup with a 3rd party utility like Atiman Uninstaller because the windows uninstaller will leave heaps of stuff behind and make your life miserable.
593  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is bitminter a good way to mine? on: July 05, 2013, 09:27:49 AM
That is roughly what you'd expect, mining with GPUs is hard these days.
594  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How to disable a device on cgminer ? on: July 05, 2013, 09:24:38 AM
Have you seen this, from GPU-README.txt ?:

Quote
Q: cgminer crashes immediately on startup.
A: One of the common reasons for this is that you have mixed files on your
machine for the driver or SDK. Windows has a nasty history of not cleanly
uninstalling files so you may have to use third party tools like driversweeper
to remove old versions. The other common reason for this is windows
antivirus software is disabling one of the DLLs from working. If cgminer
starts with the -T option but never starts without it, this is a sure fire
sign you have this problem and will have to disable your antivirus or make
exceptions.

^^ person up above, screenshot is essentially irrelevant since it appears you've either wasted money on water cooling or aren't using the stock fan/fan power connector, as both of them read -

My screenshot was to demonstrate to the esteemed Mr ssateneth that I indeed have a 5970 and as a matter of fact was running it on the same PC where I read his smug comment.

I had already demonstrated earlier that the fan can be controlled easily for OP by changing one number. In the case of the 5970 if OP was not sure which device is the correct one to control the fan then all he needs to do is change 85 to 100 two times, or whatever setting he wants if not 100%. I thought this would have been clear.

My mining rig is a HTPC/gaming computer in my living room in a tiny apartment. You'll know how loud those fans are from your own experience and that is why I have watercooling: because it is almost silent. And "wasted money" on it? Not really. Have you seen the premium that watercooled cards go for on eBay? Especially in my country where there are far less cards going around than say in the USA. In fact the completed listings feature of eBay shows cards still doing for essentially the same price I paid 12 months ago for just reference cooler fitted cards so please explain to me how I have wasted my money.

When the 6870 and 5970 in my rig were not watercooled, in summer the noise from the fans was so loud that people could hear it from outside the building, and a few people from neighboring apartments had made complaints about it to our body corporate committee. So something had to be done: watercooling or give up mining. Unlike a lot of people here I don't live in a giant property where I can hide a bunch of GPUs in the basement, garage or study room. How am supposed to explain to family and friends who come inside why the computer next to my front door sounds literally louder than some vacuum cleaners?

Not only suffereing from noise issues but with the reference cooler running at 100% fanspeed and stock settings I was getting 90-95 deg C temps on both cores and the some of the voltage regulators were exceeding 128 deg C regularly. Where I live it is common to have 30-40 deg C ambient temps in summer and I don't have 'proper' AC. Volterra's recommended maximum temperature for the voltage regulators on the 5970 is 125 deg C but surely over 100 deg C we'd expect poor lifetimes.

As for the waterblock itself well it is a syscooling block. As you'll see these days there are some reviews on various sites and they are all pretty scathing. At the time I purchased it was the cheapest available commercial solution and I thought I'd give it a try. Indeed some of those scathing reviews are written by me. Not only does the block have no coolant flow channel(s) over the VRM area of the card, but it has terrible machining tolerances above these areas. On any single GPU card having no direct coolant flow over the VRM areas might be acceptable but on a dual GPU card it is not. In hindsight a swiftech or danger den block would've been the way to go.

My overclock is also probably crap because my motherboard is half dead. 2 of the SATA connectors permenantly failed, 2 of the ram slots can no  longer be used as the PC wont even boot with a single stick in them, and it has a host of other problems as well. The board is 5 years old now running essentially 24/7/365 for that half a decade, and will run some time more until I upgrade. The 5970 and other cards might overclock better if I played around with the settings more but I don't trust this motherboards stability so I see little point. I can't in good conscious try to even sell this board as a board+CPU+RAM combo so I am essentially going to run it until it fails completely or it is just so slow I am forced to upgrade.

You can see my setup in the pictures thread but I doubt you'll care since your comments come across as quite dismissive and/or elitist.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=7216.msg2607283#msg2607283

You'll notice if you follow the link I mention the extremely long coolant lines running between the waterblocks and the radiators, and that my pumps only deliver <1 liter per minute flow rates, this inherently limits the overclock potential as if the above problems weren't enough. If I wanted extreme performance and blistering overclocks I could have tried to put <1 meter of tubing and had a more conventional setup with superior heat removal capability.
597  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: avalon asic cpu fan not spinning.. help please on: July 05, 2013, 05:58:05 AM
sorry they actually work. psu's fans in 2 asics work full time and in 3d one the fan works sometimes only.. i dont know if thats the right way to be, hope its not gonna blow up ;p

Can't you google the PSU and find out if it has dynamic fan control? Should be the kind of thing manufacturer would mention in their product info.

Judging from the posts in this thread, none of you except the OP actually have owned a 5970. Luckily for the OP, I have.

599  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Is a 450 watt psu sufficient for a 7950? on: July 05, 2013, 05:03:57 AM
I'm going to say no. Even it works at first, PSU's DC output maximum drops over time. This is because of component aging. Some say this can be up to 20% within the first year and can get even worse over time. This would take your maximum stable output down to 360 watts or less. Of course it depends a lot on the PSU circuit design and component quality, which comes down to the who manufactured the PSU and how much you wanted to pay for it...

It probably wont hurt to try it but if it works at first but then you find instability starting to occur in the future then look very suspiciously at the PSU.

Monitor the voltages of the PSU with a program from your motherboard vendor or use something like System Information for Windows (SIW) which is a great little program for monitoring all kinds of stuff. If you see substantial changes (a few percent) in any voltage reading then you are most likely overloading the PSU or it is just a piece of junk to begin with. My 1000 watt Corsair PSU is 5 years old and delivers rock solid voltages that never fluctuate more than +/- 0.01 volt even when I start mining on 500 watts of GPUs.

Because you don't give any information whatsoever about the brand or model of the PSU you have, I might suspect that it is something like a generic PSU that came with a case you purchased. There are countless generic companies manufacturing PSUs in Asia and I would not trust them at all. Usually these generic PSU not only have terrible components that are unlikely to last (especially under load when mining...) but they also can be terribly inefficient meaning your power bills will be larger than if you had a quality PSU with a meaningful efficiency certification eg 80+ silver/gold/platinum or better. Can you have a look on the PSU and let us know who the manufacturer is and if there is a product code associated with it?

Any updates with this?

Also does your backplane diagram indicate that the USB hub will run off 3.3 volts? Because USB power is 5 volts.

Is a 3.3 volt reg really required? You could have 12 v, 5 v, and 3.3 v rails from any ATX PSU.
