Running nice at 50 Mkeys/s now that I've installed AMD driver version 12.8, was getting errors with 13.1

Even if a group came up with a Scrypt hashing ASIC device there is not much chance they would be able to mass-market them without giving you a chance to re-evaluate your hardware investments.

In any case you can always re-sell the GPU's for almost their purchase cost on eBay because primarily they are made for gamers (obviously). In my experience you can sell most of the 5xxx 6xxx and 7xxx cards for only a small loss from the RRP you paid, or if you got them second hand on eBay and it was a good deal you should be able to sell the card for just as much.

All your eggs in one basket?

Basked dropped, no more eggs. Sad Efflorescence.
624  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Newb question about pool mining vs. Solo on: July 04, 2013, 06:36:49 AM
It all depends on how long you want to wait between payouts. Statistically you might not find a block for some days/weeks if you solo mine and financially this might not be acceptable to you. If you are more impatient and would like daily or every-few-daily payouts then a pool is a better option as you will be able to very quickly meet any pools auto-payout thresholds and these payments will occur reliably.
625  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: computer freezes when running Bitcoin-Qt on: July 04, 2013, 06:27:20 AM
bitcoin-qt places substantial stress on the CPU, storage device hosting the data folder, and also the controller of that storage device. To some extent a faulty PSU could be causing problems, mostly due to the power requirements of the CPU under load.

I would (make a backup of your data folder / wallet and then) test the program with the data folder running on a different storage device. You could use the following arguement on the end of a shortcut to the .exe,

Code:
C:\terracoin-qt\terracoin-qt.exe -datadir=S:\Terracoin

Is an example (but for terracoin in my case).

Also if your motherboard has two or more storage controllers (ie. two or more SATA controllers) then you could run your storage device off the other one and see if the problem persists. In fact you could simply use a USB storage device instead, by again using the shortcut trick shown above.

If it all still fails then I suspect you have a different but still serious problem with your motherboard, PSU, or CPU. Have you actually done stress tests on your CPU to ensure it is stable? This is even more important if you are running any kind of overclock or if you have your system setup to dynamically alter the CPU clocks using some kind of auto-performance profile that your motherboards vendor has come up with...

I recommend OCCT for CPU stress testing.

Are you running the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard? They usually include the storage controller driver in this package nowdays, although not always, consult your vendors driver download page to be sure. Also, is your motherboard BIOS up to date? So many things you need to look into...

Bitcoins are strings of 0's and 1's that watery bags of meat seem to think are worth something.

PayPal may be the same way. They consider any and all bitcoin transactions to be high risk, which is why you cannot buy bitcoin directly on PayPal.

While I generally agree with your comments, the reason why you cannot directly buy BTC with paypal is not because of its risk status but instead because bitcoin is not seen a physical entity. Paypal was created to facilitate eBay and the basis of eBay has always been that you are trading currency for physical items that can be posted. This is clearly reflected in the paypal dispute resolution process whereby if a seller can't provide proof of postage then the buyer will win the dispute.

BitCoin is NOT a currency. Any business is rolling the dice accepting BitCoin with how volatile the price is. With how rapid the price swings (mostly down), no logical business would/should accept BitCoin. No different than gambling. To my knowledge my dollar last week is still a dollar today, not true with BitCoin, you would have taken a hefty loss this week only!

Sorry I can't hear you over the white noise and the echos from the past when this was already discussed countless times all over the web...

Dont think there will be a group 10 for these... new usb miners coming on 7/10 so friedcat probably liquidated all of these. i suspect it will probably be a faster chip but back up at 1.99B lets wait and see

is there a forum for this topic? where can I find info on the new usbs?

Announcement is expected on the 10th of this month.

It'll be all over reddit.com/r/bitcoin if you'd prefer to not monitor the appropriate subforums for this announcement.
631  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which gives the best indication of bitcoin's current trading price? on: July 04, 2013, 03:55:19 AM
I have no idea if it is a good one or not but preev.com is the bitcoin currency converter and bitcoin value website I use.

Data is normally sourced from Mt.Gox. (In rare cases, other sources are used e.g. if there's a problem connecting to Mt.Gox.)

You could use other sites and get far more info about what is happening with the market.

It's all just part of noobie jail. If they weren't required to make 5 posts each / log in for 4 hours then this subforum would not be the way it is. But there would be other problems if newbie jail didn't exist. Do not question lord theymos and his implementations  Cool
633  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which gives the best indication of bitcoin's current trading price? on: July 04, 2013, 02:37:41 AM
Don't use mt.gox to give you a good idea of the price at the moment, their accounts are restricted and fiat<->BTC conversion is not really working out well for them at the moment.

I would suggest you look at bitstamp, btc-e, campbx

http://bitcoinity.org/markets/bitstamp/USD

you can see the other exchange prices in the top-middle of the webpage

Those are some sexy hubs. Shame they are not available where I live. How much did you pay for them?
635  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: help setting up dual 6870 miner on: July 04, 2013, 02:15:17 AM
You can download a batch file called ULPS_Configuration_Utility_v1.1.4 it is just interacting with those registry entries via a convenient GUI.

My experience with ULPS and multi-gpu systems is that it is only important when you are running dual-GPU cards eg 5970, 6990, 7990.

As for your 1000 watt corsair it could be 1 megawatt but the point I was making is that it might be faulty and you'd not be able to tell. The good news if it is faulty if I recall correctly that PSU has a 5 year manufacturers warranty...!

If you are skilled with electronics and there is absolutely no way to get a hold of another PSU for testing, you could make some static loads to stress the PSU, monitor the voltage on the rail(s) with a multimeter while you are doing it.

I remember seeing a long long time ago on some overclocking forum that a user had made a test rig for power supplies that used a large number of switchable halogen (DC voltage) bulbs to stress the PSU, some of those things can be 75 watts or more EACH.
636  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Using Onboard GPU for normal Work while mining with and AMD GPU? on: July 04, 2013, 02:03:54 AM
why do you want to use the IGP in the first place as opposed to one of the cards?

Read the title :p.

Yes I saw the title, but still my question is: why?

What possible advantage would you have? I suppose you might get a few extra MH/s or KH/s (depending on the algo you're mining with) because you might be able to set the card intensity 1 value higher... but really it's not going to make a huge difference.

637  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need expert advice ...Please advice... on: July 04, 2013, 01:58:17 AM
Yes use it wherever you want I did not intend it to be so well received, if it helps out some new users then good for them!
638  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Issues with 2x 6870 rig. on: July 03, 2013, 06:47:27 PM
Or just leave the side of the case off for now. Or maybe I have missed this guys problem... he might just have outrageously crap case ventilation.

I had assumed in all my comments he was running this WITH THE SIDE OF THE CASE OFF...

Okay, so changed the thermal paste today.. AS5.. and removed dust from the fans/ribbons - with compressed air.. that didnt really do any good  Angry

Now the temps are as follows:

GPU1 93 degrees C
GPU2 86 degrees C
- this is AFTER i underclocked both of them to 700core/525mem - lowest mem clock in msi afterburner for this model

I changed the top fans to push more cold air into the case though.

I know that AS5 is supposed to have a 200 hour "burn in" phase.. but doesnt this seem to be wrong? - im wondering if i put too little paste on the gpu maybe?

Underclocking the speeds will not affect heat output as much as lowering the voltage... you should not have to lower anything though! Surely not and get those temps.

The burn in phase will not alter the temps you get by too much, in my experience, it would be only 3-4 degrees C I'd say.

I think you might have a problem with what you think is the 'correct' quantity of thermal paste to use, either too much or too little will result in terrible temps. That or you are not seating the heatsinks back on tho chip right.

As for cleaning the heatsink and fan well the heatsink is just a chunk of metal there is nothing stopping you from washing it with some water and detergent until it's shiney new. I dry mine with a powerful room fan afterwards.

As for cleaning the fan then I'd probably recommend you just use an old tooth/paint brush to remove most of the dust. It is possible to actually wash the entire fan (yes, in water...) to get is 'clean like new'. The full process is:

- Submerge and scrub fan with a brush in some warm water along with a kitchen washing-up detergent. You want to buy the cheapest variety you can because it will contain less additives. You want to avoid anything that has things like Aloe-vera extract and moisturizers etc
- Remove the clean fan and rinse very thoroughly with running water. Then submerge it in clean water and shake it vigorously until it stops forming bubbles, and then clean it once more for good measure.
- Start drying the fan: Shake the fan in different orientations to remove as much water as possible. If you have a air compressor now use it to remove even more water.
- Importantly, completely dry the fan now using a powerful room fan, portable air conditioner exhaust, fan-heater, or hair dryer. I have a portable airconditioner and usually place the parts to be dried inside the hot air exhaust tube for an hour or two.
- Importantly, after you think it has dried enough, leave it a little longer, to be really sure it's dry.
- Importantly, re-lubricate the bearing of the motor with some light machine oil from a hardware store. It is seriously useful stuff to have and it costs $2

^ I have used this method on probably hundreds of computer fans of many types over the years and I am still to have one fail.
640  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What happens if mining is domainted by the rich? on: July 03, 2013, 06:27:52 PM
You could argue that if someone is holding a lot of something then whatever they are not holding becomes worth a lot more to those who want it. This is true in many walks of life.

A problem exists where if a group, or, several groups working together had over 51% of the hashing power of the entire bitcoin network they could in a statistical sense at least attempt to perform a 51% attack. This can and has happened with the smaller altcoins where someone with ASIC devices (on SHA-256 alts) or GPU farm (scrypt alts) comes along and acts maliciously.
