581  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - a coin with strong privacy based on CryptoNote technology on: April 28, 2014, 03:38:53 PM

ok my balance is now

bitmonero   52.061086659182

So did I get lucky or has the difficulty dropped ?

Where can I check the current difficulty ?

How many core do you have? It looks like you are rather lucky. The diff is getting higher and higher. There is no signal that it will drop. As of the current difficulty, please look at bitmonerod screen (the console one)

Yup, we are closing in on ByteCoin now (remember that Monero difficulty is equivalent to 2x that of ByteCoin).

Can anyone help with this error or recovering from it?
Code:
2014-Apr-27 11:53:59.291123 bitmonero wallet v0.8.5.294()

Sad
Are my coins lost?  Undecided
size of wallet.bin : 0 bytes

I still have wallet.bin.address.txt and wallet.bin.keys

I had a similar issue where my bin some how got corrupted and would unlock with the password (yes, it was the right password)

Is there any sort of recovery or am I just shit out of luck?

I haven't seen this before.  However, you should be able to access the wallet from backed up wallet.bin files.  Remember to always exit the wallet with "exit".
583  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [BMR] BitMonero emission curve change (proposal) on: April 27, 2014, 03:10:06 PM
Regardless of our choice, I have put up a big bounty for the first pool:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=583449.msg6422665#msg6422665

smooth and other big holders, we still need bounties for GUI and exchange. Smiley
584  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - a coin with strong privacy based on CryptoNote technology on: April 27, 2014, 02:51:22 PM
I would like to offer 1000 MRO to the first person who creates a pool.  Please send some tweets to ypool asking for it to be added!

https://twitter.com/ypool_net

Today the network hit 7700 H/s.  The exponential rise in HR continues!  When we hit 10,000 H/s or so, it will become difficult for the average CPU to solo mine.
585  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [BMR] BitMonero emission curve change (proposal) on: April 27, 2014, 05:00:04 AM
@thankful_for_today - what is the name of the coin? is it bitmonero or is it monero? I updated The CPU Coin List to what I thought was the new name. Was I wrong?

Community named it monero, TFT named it bitmonero.  Most people prefer monero.
586  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [BMR] BitMonero emission curve change (proposal) on: April 27, 2014, 02:50:52 AM
It looks like honeypenny is doing 21. Given that this coin is clearly superior to honeypenny on every other basis (first mover advantage, no block rewards going to the developer as free money, far better name, etc.) we should really just do 21 and remove a differentiator has the potential to hurt us. If the emissions curve matters, then honeypenny could outcompete this coin on that basis, and if it doesn't matter there is  no harm in having the same curve.

With the same emissions curve we almost certainly outcompete honeypenny. They have one or two interesting features but we can easily adopt those if they turn out to be useful, since it is open source.

If you and other major holders like noodledoodle etc come forward willing to donate half of your supplies to pools, services, etc, I will be willing to do so as well.

There are more than 200k coins out there now and I doubt we can even recover 50k, but at least it'll show that the core people involved are willing to give up their share for the future of the chain.  Then, we can hardfork to 2 minute blocks and diminish any possible allegation of premine.
587  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - a coin with strong privacy based on CryptoNote technology on: April 27, 2014, 01:33:02 AM
You need to open a command prompt.

Start Menu --> Box in the bottom --> enter "cmd" in this box

Execute the command prompt to bring up a box.  Navigate to your bitmonero directory with "cd" and "dir".  Then run "simplewallet.exe --help".
588  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][BMR] Bitmonero - a new coin based on CryptoNote technology - LAUNCHED on: April 27, 2014, 01:31:09 AM
This doesn't make sense.

There's a Bitmonero, and a Monero both made by different devs?

Can someone please clarify?

Same fork, same dev as the original author.  The community changed the name, but the original author didn't close the thread.
589  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - a coin with strong privacy based on CryptoNote technology on: April 27, 2014, 01:07:21 AM
I have responded to everyone today who wanted free monero, but others are welcome to PM if they need any.
590  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - a coin with strong privacy based on CryptoNote technology on: April 26, 2014, 11:28:49 PM
Why Monero and not Bitmonero? The latter makes more sense?
Why should every single coin name be based on "BitCoin"? Monero wasn’t even forked from Bitcoin. The name "monero" is simple and elegant.

Hey guys do you accept monero? What does that even mean?

Hey guys do you accept Bitmonero? Oh is that a cryptocurrency?

I would personally swap the second two sentences.  Monero sounds like both money and dinero.
591  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [BMR] Merged mining in BitMonero (proposal) on: April 26, 2014, 11:05:02 PM
I am against merged mining.
592  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - a coin with strong privacy based on CryptoNote technology on: April 26, 2014, 10:53:18 PM
Is someone mining with a i7 4770k?
how many blocks per day?
thank you.

You will get about 13-16 H/s on linux with that CPU
593  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - a coin with strong privacy based on CryptoNote technology on: April 26, 2014, 06:21:38 PM
Not sure what the issue is; if you can generate a wallet and sync the chain though, you can start mining in the daemon to your address directly though with the following command:
start_mining <address> <number_of_threads>

This seems to work partially: the load average is only 1.00 and it should be equal to the number of threads ( 8 ). After 5 minutes nothing has changed.

set_log 1 in daemon
likely you are not synchronized and it is validating headers
594  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - a coin with strong privacy based on CryptoNote technology on: April 26, 2014, 06:15:50 PM
Merge mining...hhmm... seems to be very interesting and indeed good idea to mine both coins at the same time!

Excuse me, is there daemon for Linux? I can't find it on github

Yes; https://github.com/bitmonero-project/bitmonero

This is the same fork as Bitmonero, the community voted to change the name to Monero but I guess TFT is still bumping his old thread.
595  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 26, 2014, 05:44:46 PM
That's what people said about Bitcoin too, of course there were skeptics.

Darkcoin solves what Bitcoin didn't, perfect anonymity.

How is Darkcoin different from Zerocoin, anyway?
a) How do I mine it or purchase it, and
b) how much was premined?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=585717.msg6409263#msg6409263

Totally different crypto
596  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [BCN][BMR] Hashrate is growing in both CryptoNote-based currencies on: April 26, 2014, 05:26:26 PM
when will they get a wallet like we are used to working with? command line stuff is not welcoming for most people.

+1

I hope they'd make it before all coins would have been mined  Grin

btw, is Monero the same? or it's another fork? a lit bit confused.

Monero is the new name for BitMonero, but they are the same fork yes.
597  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Darkcoin is the Future! on: April 26, 2014, 05:08:37 PM
It's not even remotely "truly anonymous" (ZeroCoin) or "private" (CryptoNote).

If you look at ZeroCoin specs closely, you'd see that it's centralized similar to Ripple in a way and no one wants that.....and CryptoNote is not anonymous..

Darkcoin is the first.

DarkCoin/DarkSend is a broken implementation of CoinJoin.  It was made by gmaxwell to promote privacy.  The DarkCoin implementation doesn't do exactly what you think it does, and appears to rely on points of centralization called master nodes. These are central points of failure and attack vectors.

ZeroCoin/ZeroCash require trusted parameters to start the chain, yes.  This has been a source of controversy mostly because when the parameters have been generated, even if it's in a decentralized fashion (as proposed), it's impossible for you to tell what's going on in the chain because all you see are ZKPs that indicate whether a block/tx is correct or not any nothing else.

CryptoNote relies on stealth addressing, ring signatures, and denominations to maintain privacy, all of which are features that required the use of people like actual cryptographers to develop.  CryptoNote already has more privacy features than DarkCoin has been been able to implement in the past three months.

Possible mining coins from wallete?

Yes
600  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [BMR] BitMonero emission curve change (proposal) on: April 26, 2014, 04:40:17 PM
I would prefer the switch to 21, but I'm not sure miners will really give their coins up.  So I think in the real world we will be stuck with 21.

In any case, we should start pooling large bounties in order to get a pool up and a GUI.
