If the whole system is crashing look at the minidump file Wink When I set up my mining rig I had some unstable energy conserving software that would boot up when it went idle for long periods of time and would cause the computer to crash.

What is this, everyone jumps on board now?

I thought I was the town leper for saying this a couple weeks ago, and only one person agreed with me.

I'm going to be very blunt with you. You have very little tact and this causes things you say to be disregarded even if they may be true.

So I just used google to translate E-VOLUTION post in the german sub forum (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=18355.0)

This is hopefully the english version of the post: http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=de&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.bitcoin.org%2Findex.php%3Ftopic%3D18355.0

It seems that his max megahash per each card is roughly the average overclock now so I will be using those numbers that way in my list.

585  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newegg's got a few 5830's left @ $130 - Great for Mining! on: July 11, 2011, 01:48:18 PM
http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=26576.0

This for example would crush a $130 5830 if you were building a dedicated rig.

It's close, but taking their average Mhash/s rates from MHC at each sale price, the 5870's 393.46Mh/s divided by $189.99 = 2.07Mh/$

The 5830's 286.45Mh/s divided by $129.99 = 2.20Mh/$

They are virtually identical in terms of performance per dollar, with the 5830 having a slight advantage.

If you kept reading the thread I compared this to the 5830 at $110.

I'm getting around 440MH/s out of mine.  I can't remember where I saw it, but there was a chart comparing MH/s, cost, and power consumption and the 5870 is THE card to get for MH/s vs. Power used.
If you add up the costs for a server (bare minimum)
cpu-                                        $30
ram-                                       $10
psu-                                      $150
mobo-                                  $140 (if you know cheeper then this with 4 pci express then let me know)
hd-                                         $15
PCIe x16 Extender Cable       $12*4
5870   $190x4
=      $1,153
(440x4)/1153=1.53 megahash per dollar(full server cost)

with 5830
5830   $110x4
=        $833
(330x4)/833=1.58

So as long as you go the absolute cheapest route 5830 rig at 110 is better but not much so. If you add a case or more to the cost at all the 5870 at 190 will probably overcome the 5830.

As you can see when you add the costs of the full server it is almost as good as a 5830 at $110. If I switch the cost for the 5830 to $130 this is the calculation.

(330*4)/913=1.44

If we use your numbers in staid of mine its this.
(286.45*4)/913=1.25
(393.46*4)/1153=1.36

Also keep in mind thats the bare minimum server so if you put more money in the gap will get larger. You are just thinking to narrowly and not thinking about the full picture.

Yea I'll agree the deals are few and far between I just don't want newbie miners to think that the 5830 is the best card at any price. It's solid but only because it was at 110. Just to show deals are still out there here's a post from less then a week ago:

There have been better cards then this sit and be patient. There's a reason its been in stock for several days.

cul8er.

Thanks I'll look at it more closely at work tomorrow it looks promising.
589  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: If I were to setup a mining rig right now, what would be the best setup? on: July 11, 2011, 02:16:27 AM
Keep in mind the price of a gpu is everything. I've seen deals like the 5870 at 189 that destroy the 5830 at 130. If you can get a hold of the $110 5830 that's your best bet. Also keep in mind megahash per dollar may be better for a specific card but it diminishes the more you add to the server(like including the cost of a case). Don't buy a server unless you can get at least 1.5 mega hash per dollar spent towards the server because you'll just be wasting money.
590  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: anyone got 4 5830s in a machine? in a case on: July 09, 2011, 12:30:50 AM
I have 3 Sapphire 5830s in a case, but they keep getting too hot. Top one was at 102C when I had it overclocked, but I backed it down.  It's now at about 92C. To keep sound down, I'd prefer to keep them in a case, and it also protects them from my pets.

How can I cool these things if they're stuck in a case? They have a 1/2 centimeter of space between them, and the case already has a top fan and a side fan.  Help please.
I'm getting this fan just waiting for it to be delivered.

Ill let you guys know how much of a difference it makes.

Yea for the middle number I just mean what most people should expect to get from an overclock. Since you said 380 I'll just leave it at that. Also whats the stock 5850 speed with no overclock?
592  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Need help making or finding a list of megahash speeds on: July 08, 2011, 06:58:32 PM
since you seem to know 5850's am I in the ball park for the average overclock on the 5850? Would you change it?
593  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Need help making or finding a list of megahash speeds on: July 08, 2011, 06:36:08 PM
I realize that everyone does different things to their gpu and get different megahash values I'm just trying to find the stock megahash of each card(no changes just start up and go), what the average person gets in a overclock, and the record. For an example for the average I put the 5830 at 311 because I'm pretty sure almost any one who overclocks can reach that.
594  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Need help making or finding a list of megahash speeds on: July 08, 2011, 03:28:27 PM
I made a fairly quick list of speeds for what I consider the most used cards. It is not complete and I'm not sure how accurate it is. The format is:

average overclock speed
highest speed

595  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5830's, what mh/s are you getting? on: July 08, 2011, 01:51:07 PM
318MH/s OC'd at 1020/355MHz.  Aggression=12 Worksize=256 phatk and some other settings that I can't remember.

I can push it to 1050/355MHz and hit a solid 325-327MH/s but it sometimes locks after a few hours, which to me isn't worth the 7-9 extra MH/s.

How'd you get it that high? At 960mhz mine starts to run into issues. Voltage?

What brand are you using? I use sapphire and have no problems getting it to 1000/300 with no voltage changes. I haven't tried higher because I'm waiting on my 5200 rpm fan XD
596  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newegg selling 5870 for 239$? (STILL IN STOCK) on: July 08, 2011, 01:46:18 PM
It's still in stock because its a very very mediocre deal. The 5870 at 189 was a good deal this is not so much.
597  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: the most powerful mining rig ever contrived on: July 08, 2011, 04:18:50 AM
If your using gpu's the only possible way to do it in 15 machines would be through the 6990.
598  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Need help making or finding a list of megahash speeds on: July 08, 2011, 04:09:01 AM
That's not what I want because it doesn't really tell you what the average person is actually getting for speeds... For example the 5830 specs are still on phoenix 1.48 and I'm sure it doesn't have the 3% increase ect.
Also even if that was completely updated it still doesn't tell me realistic speeds for overclock and stock speeds only the max any one has recorded getting.
599  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: the most powerful mining rig ever contrived on: July 08, 2011, 04:01:58 AM
[edit] To be fair, he didn't specify GPUs exactly, just machines.  Perhaps he's found the magical fountain of cheap FPGAs?  Grin
That's exactly why I said this Tongue
Unless you found some fancy alien technology I highly doubt it.

I'm considering writing a program and I need to know the average speed you can expect to get overclocked and normal for each ati card 5xxx series and up. Is there a list with this information? If not what is the best way to find this information?

edit: my list

The format is:
Card number
expected non overclocked speed
expected average overclock speed
highest speed possible
