What about alternate blockchains? Can't the hardware be refitted to work on other currencies? Or folding proteins or finding aliens or curing cancer or something?

It's also about investing in what you want to support. In mining, which helps secure the network, or in ponzi schemes and drug dealing.

I think Open Transactions can do this

Can't believe I missed it because of glbse downtime today ![Sad](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/sad.gif)

Doesn't open transactions have much of what's needed for this already? For holding the securities at least, not the bidding / trading part.

Just a comment on your website - I saw no direct link to your GLBSE page. It would be convenient to have one. The page says "footer here" at the bottom - this might be a good place for it.

You just have to watch out for the few who are.
That's what BMF is for - I can leave that to you ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Well, some make a point out of their assets being shares as in you're buying not only parts of mining output, but parts of the actual hardware. Which would make a difference if it were sold f.ex. And that it gives voting rights. The difference might be in the contract, and might be hypothetical, depending on the trustworthiness of the operator.

Thanks again for your answer!
Could you share some thoughts on mining shares vs mining bonds, and how this affects BMF?
Thanks for the comprehensive answer! Regarding item 8: I'm new to GLBSE (and investment in general) - but looking at BMF there, I realized that if I bought shares at 0.95 or 1.0 , I wouldn't be able to get my money back unless you successfully sell your remaining 9000+ shares - because there's noone buying for more than 0.1 . Since it would take a lot of capital to fill buy the rest of the shares, the risk seems pretty high. If someone (you?) would place a bid at 0.8 or something, it might help psychologically.. ?

Are there mining companies on GLBSE you don't include in your fund? Why not?

In the streets of Beijing you can get Bittcoins for half the price, and you almost can't tell the difference….
If you just want to issue a currency, use Open Transactions. You won't be subject to 51% attacks, as you would with a fork of bitcoin. And for a local currency, there's always going to be more hashing power outside than inside. Backing this currency with bitcoin would be very cool...
Not sure how well this would work: Buy mining equipment, set it up as a company on GLBSE and sell (all / most of) the shares for bitcoin. You'd need someone to take over drifting the rig once you leave, obviously. Maybe there are already operators there you could team up with.

I just bought a couple of coins just to test this Singapore site: https://dgtmkt.com/ Was able to buy with creditcard, and received the coins after just 10 minutes. Don't know how much they have available though.

Why not buy one of the Greek islands. I hear they're in need of hard cash.
