The ads are a custom modification to the theme. I'm not going to modify all of the themes.

Sending/relaying a transaction never takes blocksize into account.

The latest version won't let you send transactions with incorrect fees. It can happen with old/modified/alternate versions that don't know the current fee rules, though. Transactions with too-low fees will be stuck at 0 confirmations for a long time.

This can't be enforced automatically, and it would be difficult to enforce through moderation.

Signature images are making too much of a mess, so adding them is now disabled for everyone. Existing ones have not been removed, but they will be removed next time you change anything on that profile page.

Someone finally implemented the "easy" mixing method I described on the anonymity page!  This is the first service I know of that mixes properly.


Anonymity is greatly reduced if there's more than one deposit at an address. It would be better to change it automatically as soon as a deposit is detected and not make the user deal with it.

There should be a way of deleting your account.

In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Your visible ad text (ignoring link URLs, etc.) must be less than 150 characters in length, and it can only contain links: no other style. It will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here. (One of the remaining slots has random factoids, and one links to the current ad auction.)

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats: On the 27^th of September, 2011 there were about 730,000 views of topics. So one slot would have appeared around 73,000 times per day. The ad doesn't appear on topic pages with only one post, though, and it only appears for people using the default theme.

Most recent stats: On the 5^th of November, 2011, there were about 124,000 views of topics. So one slot would have appeared around 12,400 times per day. The ad doesn't appear on topic pages with only one post, though, and it only appears for people using the default theme.

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you bid, all of your previous bids are automatically canceled.
- All bid prices must be divisible by 0.5.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction ends at 03:00:00 on November 13, UTC. Countdown
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slot may be sold to someone else.

They can poll getinfo.errors to receive alerts. If there are any alerts, then the network is almost certainly broken. Alerts will only ever be sent for very serious issues.

Gavin does have a warning sticky in alt currencies.

It's not the forum's job to protect users from dangerous people/services/ideas. You need to use your own brain. (I was initially opposed to the idea of responding in any way to scammers. I only created the scammer tag because it seemed that almost everyone expected scammers to be banned once identified, which caused otherwise-reasonable people to stop using their brains in some cases.)

I don't agree that it was scamming. Lying is not scamming. He didn't make a contract with users, and users voluntarily ran closed-source software that could be centrally controlled.

There are many ways, but here's one suggested by Satoshi:

You can put data into the block chain using standard transactions in ways that are undetectable. It's impossible to prevent people from putting arbitrary data into the block chain.

Transactions can be sent directly to a public key instead of to an address. Some generation transactions do this.

The generations that pools like Eligius produce are actually address transactions, so they will be detected by mytransactions. Nowadays few individuals receive pubkey transactions.

Something to note: if you're capable of storing data, you can minimize the amount of data you download/process by handling ETag headers and using the block-stop parameter to /q/mytransactions.

It would not be too hard for me to add pubkey-TX support to /q/mytransactions. I haven't seen any demand for it, though.

I designed /q/mytransactions for things like that. It has all the information you need to do that, assuming your client only sends and receives address transactions. That page doesn't show non-address transactions.

You guys understand that I'm not asking for software to be built from scratch, right? I only need some modifications to existing software such as SMF or phpBB. A few of the required modifications are quite extensive, but many are just little tweaks. The specification document is long not because the job is huge, but because I included a lot of detail.

You think it will take more than 650 hours to build that?

Seems like 40-80 hours to me. After you find some well-written PHP forum software that already uses PostgreSQL, you just need to add the dozen or so major required features and then some minor required features that will probably take less than an hour each on average.

The forum will probably have at least 100 more BTC by the time I start thinking about ending bidding.
