The next 12 hours are critical and this is like watching paint dry.

Ok, I have a question... WHO are those that have voted for Lauda? WHY? Do YOU not believe in FREE SPEECH?

I have nothing against Lauda, and his proposal for moderation is perfectly legit but... he/she/it/them has already stated that WO was full of garbage (and idiots) and considers borderline offtopic OPINIONS (such as of r0ach's) as "spam". I won't even mention his * opinion about casual altcoins talk or how * literally said that the best way to help would be entirely deleting the thread.

Is this really what YOU want?

Is it really what you want for your SONS?

THINK OF THE CHILDREN FOR GODS SAKE!!!

image redacted for brevity.

P.S.: Image of happy children of all continents and races inserted for full effect.

  I voted for Lauda.

 It has everything to do with free speech and also everything to do with order.  Right now I can't exercise any form of speech in the WO thread because it is locked.  The newly elected moderator is the first step to getting the thread unlocked.  Also, I like a modicum of order; it makes the topic easier to follow.  I like that when I get a notification of activity in a thread I follow that it will contain something topical and worthy of my time rather than a Nazi woman wearing Bitcoin symbol arm band and sporting flashing green lights for breasts.  It's not funny, not entertaining, not offensive to me personally but mainly it's not topical.  Then other people want to weigh in on that off-topic post with their own critiques, criticisms, shaming and various other expressions of "free speech" and the thread goes to shit.

  Feel free to exercise your free speech by creating a new thread in the society section about whatever the hell you want and then let people decide whether they care to waste their time in there.  Perhaps you don't realize the reason the thread was locked in the first place.  It's those "free speech" off topic posts that created the censorship - we're still free to make our posts just not in the WO thread because it was "out of control".  It became a headache for the administrator of this board; the easiest thing for him to do would be to leave it locked.  This should lead any sane individual to realize that the WO thread WAS full of garbage AND idiots.

 If you want free speech, put on placard and dance around in the streets - or - if you want free speech in here, open a new thread with your off-topic rants.  When I say "you" I'm talking to all those idiots who caused the complaints that led to the WO thread being locked in the first place.  This is not the end of the problem; it's a second chance and from what I see in this thread, we may be destined to repeat the same mistake.  Free speech doesn't mean you get to say whatever you want and there are no consequences - it only means the government can't penalize you for saying it.

5983  Economy / Economics / Re: Reliable comparison between mining vs. buying and holding on: July 07, 2017, 04:31:16 AM
Actually I have a different experience between mining vs buying and holding. Because i have not listen for any people who arguing for mining and opposed to buying and holding. Even i hear a opposite for the people who think that buying and holding is much better and everyone could do it easily than mining. Because only big professional investors can do mining and only when they start to mining if in their country they have a lowest electricity.

Hi Oralmat, precisely! What you have quoted is very true these days. And that is why the mining that I do, it is done at a location where electricity is cheap, and plans are in place to upgrade the moment it becomes necessary, or even mandatory. Most miners don't stay long in the game because they lack the funds to upgrade when that moment comes, and that upgrading step is critically crucial to continue mining.

Buying and holding is also a good option, but many people feel that this was best done when bitcoin was much lower in price e.g. below US$1,000. With the current price of bitcoin these days, you can get a mining contract with all the benefits mentioned above for the price of a little over 1 btc, which you can potentially recover in USD in one to one-and-a-half years. This is because the returns are dependent upon 2 factors - the amount of bitcoin accumulated through mining, AND the price of bitcoin at any given moment. Hence, while 1 btc may be worth $2,500 today, if you manage to mine 0.5 btc in the next 6 months and the price of bitcoin then is $5,000, then you would have recouped that $2,500 (0.5 x $5,000).

The only difference between buy-hold and mining is, with buy-hold, once you sell your bitcoin to realise your capital appreciation, you will no longer hold any bitcoin for future appreciation, and you would have to buy new bitcoin at the price then, assuming you don't have any left. With mining, after you sell all your bitcoin from mining, you will continue to mine for more bitcoin for future appreciation, though I gather this time it will be less given the halving and increasing mining difficulty. But it doesn't matter, because bitcoin price would have been higher then, and you would be getting these bitcoin for free since you have recovered your initial investment. In our programme, the costs for all electricity, maintenance and future upgrades are derived from small quantities of bitcoins accumulated daily and apportioned aside, so no further reinjection of funds is necessary along the way.

The figures as tabulated at http://www.coinpurveyor.com/buy-hold-vs-mining-bitcoin/ are actual figures I have received to date. Of course, what will happen in one year, 5 years and 10 years from now, no one really knows.

 You can't earn 1.2 bitcoins in each of 3 successive years with cloud mining contract - the difficulty increases will make it impossible.  If it were so profitable to cloud mine Bitcoin, don't you think EVERYONE would already be doing it?  1000 day contracts are absolutely useless - no miner will last the difficulty changes for that long a period of time and the maintenance fees will eat up your profit long before the 1000 days are up.

 Stay away from this huckster OP!  He's not being forthright in his claims.

5984  Economy / Speculation / Re: Japan ends 8% consumption tax on bitcoin Today on: July 06, 2017, 01:38:53 PM

here is another picture then, just to make you more "interesting" Cheesy

this is the Electronics Retailer called Bic that is accepting bitcoin with the banner saying tax free corner!

 To be clear, you don't get the tax exemption simply because you are using Bitcoin.  You must be a foreigner and present your passport and they will waive the 8% consumption tax on the goods you purchase.  You can pay with any method they accept (including Bitcoin) and still save the tax.  There is a caveat; you must not open the item or use the item during your stay or you will be required to pay the tax.

Conditions for tax exemption
  • *You must not consume the purchased items in Japan.
  • *You alone are allowed to consume the purchased items.
  • *You must take the purchased items out of Japan when you depart.

 How do they enforce this? I don't know.

 Most countries will refund any consumption tax or VAT you pay during your stay as a visitor on items you bring home unopened/unused.  This is nothing new.  The fact is that Japan has made it much easier for tourists by allowing them to make their purchases tax-free at the cash register rather than requesting a refund at the airport on their way home.

5985  Other / Meta / Re: Wall Observer new ownership on: July 05, 2017, 10:58:10 PM
I thought the new owner was supposed to be someone who is a "regular" in the WO thread?

 In option 1, Theymos used the word "active" which I believe was used to contrast the status of the current moderator, adamstgBit, which is "inactive".

 Option 3 stated: Move the current thread to a new Chat section which will be mostly ignored by bitcointalk.org mods, but will have its own set of mods pulled from the Wall Observer regulars in order to enforce some amount of order.

Are any of the candidates disqualified if that were one of the criteria?

 "Regular" was one of the criteria but only for option 3.  As we know, option 1 took the most votes.

Current list of candidates for moderator of the Wall Observer thread:

lightfoot - "I would go with a largely hands-off option, no directly blasting other people, no posting marketing crap, simple stuff"

arklan - "if mods are needed, i have the time to do it"

Erkallys
- "I candidate if this is needed. At least I have no hatred toward me as well as any fanboy." - "I would not be too strict on moderation, and I am available all day long."

infofront- "I'm not a prolific poster, or well known personality, but I'd volunteer to help moderate. I started the "unmoderated" wall observer thread because I believe in the laissez-faire nature of Adam's thread."

Lauda - "I could create one, and would if someone were to get something like ChartBuddy running again." <-- from another thread but related to this one.

empowering - "I probably have the necessary erratic mental health condition..." "...So I guess I will throw my hat in - happy to do it, not fussed either though."

5989  Other / Meta / Re: My account got hacked, that account is my family living please help to recover on: July 04, 2017, 01:44:16 PM
 You can support your family with a Bitcointalk account? Wow. Even if I tried to monetize it, it wouldn't cover the cost of my internet access.
I wonder if Theymos realizes the economic devastation that would ensue if this board ceased to exist.  No pressure there.

If given the opportunity to burn your Country's Flag for a $100,000 payment, will you?

Be very Sincere.

 Sure!  Old, tattered or torn flags are frequently incinerated when retired.  If I got 100Gs for doing that, I could throw a very nice retirement party for it Wink

If option 1 or 3 occur, who are the candidates for new listed owner / mods? Someone please compile a list.

 The updated list in no particular order:

arklan - "if mods are needed, i have the time to do it"

Appreciate all the work you're putting into reopening the WO thread, Theymos.  Glad you didn't take the easiest route and decide to leave it locked.

So, bumping it up, it looks like we have the following names for potential moderator:

lightfoot - "I would go with a largely hands-off option, no directly blasting other people, no posting marketing crap, simple stuff"

yefi - "I'll throw my hat into the ring if there's a shortage though"

arklan - "if mods are needed, i have the time to do it"

kurious - "'Happy to help any team on a part time basis if it will keep the WO going in a fashion as close to its original anarchic form as possible'"

Erkallys - "I candidate if this is needed. At least I have no hatred toward me as well as any fanboy." - "I would not be too strict on moderation, and I am available all day long."

BlindMayorBitcorn - [No stated "style of moderation" AFAIK. Please update]

infofront - "I'm not a prolific poster, or well known personality, but I'd volunteer to help moderate. I started the "unmoderated" wall observer thread because I believe in the laissez-faire nature of Adam's thread. "

Lauda - "I could create one, and would if someone were to get something like ChartBuddy running again." <-- from another thread but related to this one. Proof below.

Perhaps now that someone else has taken the initiative to start another self-moderated wall observer thread, it can continue to live on in the speculation folder without causing undue distress and extra work for the moderators.
I could create one, and would if someone were to get something like ChartBuddy running again.

 This looks about right - 5% leaders, 95% followers.  Do we need to wait longer for volunteers to come forward or can we open a voting thread now?  Maybe we need a voting thread on how long to wait?
Who's gonna jump the shark?
5995  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator/miner [v0.22] on: July 03, 2017, 02:01:10 PM
why am i getting this error ?

Code:
[root@localhost vanitygen]# ./vanitygen 1ad
Difficulty: 78508
vanitygen: pattern.c:164: vg_exec_context_init: Assertion `vxcp->vxc_key' failed.
Aborted

 I would say based on this from the pattern.c code
Code:

163 vxcp->vxc_key = vg_exec_context_new_key();
164 assert(vxcp->vxc_key);

points back to this (still in pattern.c)
Code:
43 EC_KEY *
44 vg_exec_context_new_key(void)
45 {
46 return EC_KEY_new_by_curve_name(NID_secp256k1);
47 }

 Try this command
Code:
openssl ecparam -list_curves

 If secp256k1 isn't in the list, that's your problem.  What OS are you running?

5996  Economy / Speculation / Re: Japan ends 8% consumption tax on bitcoin Today on: July 02, 2017, 11:57:12 AM
Good BOOST for monday.

The boost won't be that big. Japan still isn't the leader in trading. Also, somebody should investigate how their Bitcoin businesses are really doing.
I suspect there could be big interest in the currency but only out of curiosity and very little real use.
Last time I heard, Japanese were all over bitcoins. They were buying like hell and also that the bitcoin price in Japanese exchanges was pretty higher than the other exchanges.

 I'm going to hazard a guess that it was 8% higher or thereabouts?  The Japanese were paying 8% more for buying Bitcoin (and altcoins) from abroad - now they wont be.   Going forward, we should see parity with other exchanges or there will be an awesome arbitrage opportunity.

6000  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proof that Crime isn't Why they Hate Bitcoin. on: June 29, 2017, 01:51:01 PM
Most Bitcoin critics often cite crime as reason for wanting Bitcoin obliterated. I doubt crime is the real reason. . It could well just be a subconscious thing they have no control over::  like Hatred for the weak, poor and middle class,  Preference for elitism, fascism and dictatorship,

PROOF:
Tools like VPNs and Proxies almost have thesame capability as Bitcoin but you hardly hear the complain about them.

To be honest, most people with this weird ideology don't really have problems with people becoming financially independent . Their problem is just the FREEDOM money brings to people. They wouldn't give a damn about your wealth so long as you are totally under their control.

 That's not proof!  It doesn't even constitute evidence.  How did you conclude that VPNs and proxies have almost the same capability as Bitcoin?
