61  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: May 01, 2014, 04:40:31 PM
Distribution effectiveness = - (complaint) - (bitching)^2 - (extreme bitching/ sabotage)^4 + (happy follower) + (happy contributor)^2 + (happy loyalist/ dev. team)^4

My grandfather once remarked "you could take all the land and redistribute it equally among people and the same people would end up owning it again."

The 80-20 Pareto Distribution, where 20% of the population owns 80% of the wealth seems to be a naturally occurring phenomenon. Any coin can be expected to migrate towards this distribution. This is still a lot better than the "1%" statistic oft quoted in the US.

Any attempts to socially engineer some other desired distribution are apt to fail, and worse, yield unintended adverse consequences.
62  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] IPO of MaidSafe:  Entering the Future of the Decentralized Internet on: April 22, 2014, 03:44:33 PM
Too bad, I was very interested in this coin, planned to invest in it, but the fact that they changed the terms of the pre-sale with no advance warning makes it a non-starter for me. No mention was ever made of a 50% allocation between BTC and MSC investment. People were misled to believe both were allowed up to the total Safecoin to be sold.
They messed up - they should expect it, tons of MSC holders were waiting for a quick exit...

I expected about 20% of the pre-sale to go quickly given sales volume of MSC over the last week, the unknown was how much existing MSC holders prior to the Maidsafe announcement to accept MSC alongside BTC at a fixed ratio would exchange MSC for Maidsafe, which turned out to be a lot. Trying to peg exchange rates never works in the long run, whether it is bimetallic standards in the 1800s, fiat now, or crypto.

By changing the terms of their offering during the IPO, Maidsafe has lost credibility and temporarily devalued the value of the currency most of their funding came from.

Anyone know if the Zemana Antilogger Free includes clipboard antilogging as well as keystroke antilogging. Zemana has a paid version of a clipboard antilogger but it isn't listed under products on their main page.

These renderings are very attractive. Anyone know what program was used to create them? I've used e-book cover programs, but this one has a very extensive product line.

Don't you need two Airfiber units to create a link? Also, Airfiber is on a different frequency than 802.11, I don't know if it's unlicensed. It does have a nice bandwidth though at 1.5 gbps. I'm pretty sure I can get fiber to the to the network.

Site says AirFiber is 24 Ghz unlicensed spectrum.

I'm negotiating to buy and resell the quad core ARM Odroid and/or NanoPC boards to run Skycoin and other PoS coin nodes for a mesh darknet, personal/public cloud storage, and encrypted VOIP. The boards are at http://hardkernel.com/main/main.php and http://nanopc.org/NanoPC-T1_Feature.html . A Ubuntu 12.04 build is already available for them, which I also have running with Skycoin on Virtualbox. I'm considering setting up a bunch of these in the Mission District of SF to start a cryptocoin based meshnet, so the proposed Skycoin subsidy would be a boon for this.

An $8 wi-fi USB module is available. Anyone have any idea if I should have 2 Wi-Fi radios per unit? Maybe even 3 if using 802.11b or g, 1 for each distinct channel, 1, 6, and 11. Directional antennas would be better, but will require a pricier Wi-Fi module.

Looks like not all dongles are created equal as far as using as an access point, http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1952 . Their Wi Fi 3 does have a threaded connector and is 802.11n, but antenna is an omni. I'd rather have 3 radios with 120 degree sector antennas for 360 coverage with 3 channels.

BTT, phrasing is everything. You might simply say that your policy is in accord with the laws of <insert jurisdiction here> and that the intent is to protect your customers from bad actors. Phrase it so that you position yourself as advocates for your clients' interests. You don't want to appear to be agents of a "Big Brother" surveillance program, or the "precious metals police," determined to exploit your customers' desire for privacy, right? And connect your statement with the mission of your business, which is about relying on the security of the blockchain, the reputation of your custodians (along with appropriate auditing), and universal access afforded by Bitcoin and Counterparty. Your policies are meant to make it difficult or impossible for bad actors to violate the "Circle of Trust," right?

Thank you sparta_cuss. Indeed you are correct. We only wish to protect our customers from bad actors and to dissuade bad actors (as well as US regulators) from considering us permissive in our policies. We've updated our KYC/AML policy with the text below.

BitcoinTangibleTrust (DigitalTangibleTrust) is not a bank but is still subject to the “Know your customer” clause in the US Patriot Act and "Anti-Money Laundering" requirements.
Most of the same personal information that you need to open a bank account is required to place an order with BitcoinTangibleTrust. BitcoinTangibleTrust will fulfill a purchase and/or physical redemption order for anyone who provides the basic information normally required (e.g., address, telephone, email address, etc). BitcoinTangibleTrust records each transaction and keeps an audit trail that can be retrieved if needed to meet the legal process if requested.

In most cases this will not affect you the customer as all this information is required for BitcoinTangibleTrust and its partners to fulfill an order. Please ensure that all data is entered correctly when you check out or when you register your digital coins for redemption and delivery. Our policy objective is to protect our customers from bad actors and to remain compliant with the financial services laws of the United States. We take our customer privacy seriously and we will never volunteer our customer purchase or redemption information outside of the legal process.

This is a lot better. I take it the information only needs to be provided to redeem BTT issued assets for physical? Seems like BTT would be better off in some jurisdiction other than US.

By the way, is the 2,000,000 Gold Eagle asset pending at http://bitcointangibletrust.com/assets/ for real? This would be about 2.6 billion USD in value.
69  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: April 06, 2014, 12:09:36 AM
BTT publishes KYC and AML Policies
BitcoinTangibleTrust has uploaded new KYC and AML policies online. You may review our policies here: http://bitcointangibletrust.com/knowyourcustomer_anti-moneylaundering/. If the community has any feedback or questions regarding these policies, we'd welcome hearing them.

I have a major problem with this:

Quote
Fictitious names may result in loss or forfeiture of your physical assets and digital tokens.

I will never trust anyone who makes a statement like this with my money for anything other than very short pass-through. What it amounts to is that you are reserving the right to steal someone's property. If you decide you don't want to do business with someone, you should just return their assets to them in full.
70  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MasterCoin: New Protocol Layer Starting From “The Exodus Address” on: March 28, 2014, 05:12:51 AM
It's important to have a regularly updated presence here to promote the project. I know I'm not inclined to spend a lot of time going to a bunch of different forums and sites to follow each project, especially when the project specific forums use irritating, oddball forum software which is a lot different from SMF. Bitshares has a nice forum with Simple Machines, but I don't even check in there too often.

The newsletters are a good idea if not sent more than once a week. It makes it easier to keep up if the news is delivered via email.

Some projects try to deliver updates via Bitmessage, but it doesn't work at all well when the news disappears if you don't run the client within a couple of days of it being sent.

I look forward to a test version  works on machines running windows,Because I can't run that beta version of Linux(Or can provide an easy run version).I want to experience this coin as soon as possible .

You can download Virtualbox and install for Windows, then install Ubuntu 13.04. It is tricky, and does not go according to the instructions, but see Craig's and my posts above. I used 12.04 but think 13.04 is more compatible based on Ethereum.

Seems to me any sell-off from the wallet launch is priced in already. I expect an uptrend soon after launch. I'm looking forward to consolidating my holdings to one address. I have no interest in selling since I'm building a diversified portfolio of next gen assets. I am interested in using XCP to operate a hedge fund where investors can hold specific assets, sectors or the whole fund.

That is exactly my purpose with xcp. I currently operate a hedge fund with xcp and bitcoin.

I'm waiting until higher prices to start. At the moment, I would effectively be selling off assets at low prices to exchange them for shares in a fund.

Hedge fund?!! Damn, I am in.

Thanks! What I have in mind is a Doug Casey type portfolio for the fund - 1/3 precious metals, 1/3 currencies, 1/3 equities, mainly in resource stocks, also some high tech and start-ups, with the high risk/high yield portion limited to a total of 10% of the fund, and no bonds of any type.

Can any one help with this install error.

Try "sudo apt-get install libgmp-dev" (maybe just "apt-get install libgmp-dev")

If this doesn't work by itself, I found following http://ethereum-miner.tumblr.com/post/75205573886/linux-ubuntu-install-guide up to the point where it starts getting into Ethereum specific instructions finally got things working on Ubuntu 12.04. You also need to make sure you have all of the Skycoin dependencies listed and dependencies of Skycoin dependencies installed as well. The installer script does not install them.

He used computing resources which did not belong to him, but were entrusted to his care, to sabotage another project.

If that's true, I'll be moving my miners off Eligius and recommend same to every other miner I know. Care to back quoted claim with some data?

From https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=56675.40 :

CoiledCoin now closed. Have a nice day.

And his planned attack on Devoin, from https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=56830.msg678004#msg678004 :

I don't particularly have any incentive to respond to the scammers that I foiled, given the significant cost (in time) to do so. Nor do I have any financial loss or care particularly if people want to stop mining on Eligius because they were in on the scam (or any other reason). I will clarify that Eligius miners were not adversely impacted by this, and that the CLC mining involved only adding data that I hashed myself to my own transactions; and I was careful to ensure that nobody lost any confirmed CLC. If any Eligius miner wishes to inquire further, I will take the time to answer specific to-the-point questions which are signmessage'd with an active (ie, has mined in the past week) Eligius payout address that has earned at least 2000 TBC (5.36870912 BTC) over all time.

Eligius is a Bitcoin mining pool and I am, as always, committed to doing my best to contribute to and protect the Bitcoin ecosystem. Pyramid schemes built upon forks of the Bitcoin software ultimately discredit and harm Bitcoin's reputation. I hope CoiledCoin will be the last of such scams now that it is clear there are people (not just myself) willing to stand up to them. Namecoin alone demonstrates a legitimate, innovative use of Bitcoin technology, and while I don't personally agree with their ideals/goals, I see it as a good thing for Bitcoin and worth cooperating with.

cablepair, regarding Devcoin, I don't see any reason to treat it as different from any other scamcoin. I will at least discuss it with you on IRC before doing anything other than mining it with the almost-unmodified (zero txn fee, zero post-maturity delay) Devcoin client.

P.S. While the opposition seem to be very venemous and vocal, I have gotten a lot more positive support from a head-count perspective.

Luke-jr is by far the most malignant personality I have come across in the Bitcoin ecosystem. The fact that other high ranking developers tolerate and even condone this behavior has caused me to question the integrity of the Bitcoin project itself. I don't want these kind of people anywhere near any investment of mine. I will continue to use BTC as a gateway to other crypto assets, but will not be storing significant value in it. I would rather see Mastercoin and Counterparty migrate to other blockchains.

78  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: March 23, 2014, 04:30:47 PM
EDIT: I will also that ask that you and Luke-Jr discuss the Coiledcoin 51% attack accusations separately from this thread, if that's okay.

No, I believe the Coiledcoin attack should be a part of this discussion. I would never have known about it if it hadn't been brought up, so I investigated what happened. What Luke-jr did to Coiledcoin was similar to a bully on the beach coming along and kicking apart a sand castle some kids were in the middle of building, saying it was in the way of people walking on the beach as justification. He used computing resources which did not belong to him, but were entrusted to his care, to sabotage another project.

This discussion has shown some serious problems with Bitcoin, a high degree of consolidation of centralized control, which needs to be addressed. Proof of work mining was the main turn-off as a gross waste of resources and energy when I first learned about Bitcoin. It would be good if Counterparty and Mastercoin could migrate away from Bitcoin, preferably to a PoS or proof of contribution blockchain.
79  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [SKY] Skycoin Launch Announcement on: March 23, 2014, 04:01:09 PM
I keep getting the following error from ./run.sh -h , from github/skycoin/skycoin file secp256k1-g
https://i.imgur.com/fMHdTsH.jpg

Code:
apt-get install libgmp-dev

Thanks! I ended up on the Ethereum installation instructions doing a google search for "ubuntu libgmp" when it wouldn't install with "sudo apt-get install libgmp" and just installed all the dependencies listed there. Ethereum prefers Ubuntu 13.04 over 12.04, maybe Skycoin does as well. For some reason, Ubuntu gmp is under libgmp-dev instead of libgmp.

I want to migrate over to arch linux for Beaglebone and other SoC devices (R-Pi isn't quite strong enough for the entire stack of personal cloud/self hosting of Indiebox and the wish list at http://p2pconnects.us/2013/12/30/assembling-my-personal-cloud/), thought Ubuntu would be more complete for a quick and easy install - think I might as well have went with arch linux since that is the goal for a low powered, always on device with network access.

Is there any Skycoin test coin available and a test net? My client came up with a bunch of addresses but no transactions. I'm not sure what I would use as a receiving address. Any docs on how to use?

Does the above display look right, or should I be seeing some numbers or transaction activity?

I'm trying it out an ArchLinux install now to run it on Beaglebone once I get it running on Virtualbox on the Indiebox stack.
