61  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Final Diff thread prize is $75 runs Sept 25 to OCT? picks are yet to start. on: September 27, 2016, 05:47:03 PM
Sad to see final thread, it's been a lot of fun thanks phil for running them.  It sure is high already I hope it goes down as price does not seem match the difficulty jump up, which makes margins smaller... and smaller.

And I agree ETH is interesting they stopped a theft but at a high cost... price went down even had the ETC come out of it.  It was a unique situation with a lot of powerful whales that did not want to lose money.

And coin price is not to bad I like seeing it above 600 personally, want it higher but will take this over a big drop.   There was a small one midweek but still remained in high 500's.

It appears estimate is a tad higher now on bitwisdom:

Bitcoin Difficulty:    225,832,872,179
Estimated Next Difficulty:    237,836,938,820 (+5.32%)
Adjust time:    After 107 Blocks, About 17.5 hours
Hashrate(?):    1,704,707,599 GH/s

This week I still kinda had my time spent mostly on 3D printer.  I have had countless project's I lost track of time on and been a fun week.
63  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is It Possible To Run ASIC on Old Windows Vista Laptop? on: September 24, 2016, 08:51:49 PM
Thanks.  I have gotten farther with it now that I turned automatic updates back on and updated.  There must have been something I didn't have and turned it off at one point to speed it up.  I  haven't spent a lot of time with it yet and I am still not able to run a script successfully, but there is a chance that might have been because of the state of a pool I was using at the time.  I'll find out soon.

I highly suggest looking into a RPI.  They are not to much money normally around 30 bucks.  But check around and I think you will even find images, or you can set up the software yourself.

But you then have a very very low power controller vs a entire PC.  You will lose money running two of the old gridseeds on a full size pc, assuming you pay electricity.
64  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Is the S7 Exhaust Fan the Same as the S9? One of my S9 Exhaust Fans is Dying on: September 24, 2016, 08:44:32 PM
The same.   Ordering the same ones I used to replace my S7 to replace my S9's  (only one has failed so far for S9's).

Only S7 that is a exception to this is the S7-F1, but there are not a ton of these out there compared to regular ones.  But S7-F1 was a one fan edition with a higher RPM fan in front.

But you were able to add a fan to it on back.   Going into summer I had added one to back (it was a regular S7 fan on back not high RPM).   But I have to admit I was surprised how well the S7-F1 did on cooling.  It had a design where you counted on 1 fan, which is not the greatest but as far as cooling it did really good for me at least.
65  Other / Off-topic / Re: BTC Hardware (noise) actually provides security??? on: September 24, 2016, 08:39:39 PM
Loud, constant noise attracts attention.

You may be a Chinese savior but I bet you can't save yourself when trouble comes knocking your door.

I would agree a "bad guy" is not going to know what the loud noise is.  I think it will attract attention personally, and it is better security not to attract attention of anyone really.

I personally would look at standard security systems, and camera's if you want security.   Heck it not only provides security but many other thing's this week the FedEx guy decided to deliver a box that was in pieces ... you can not imagine how much better customer service FedEx gives you when you have video.   Driver even apologized and admitted fault leaving a damaged box... this from at first pretending he had no idea.
66  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN Tech WARRANTY SCAM ! WILL NOT REPLACE DEAD ANTMINER S9 on: September 24, 2016, 08:24:20 PM
If your in the US and worried about warranty you really should check out https://bitmainwarranty.com .  You will notice that they are ones answering in this thread.  You save money on initial purchase going direct from China site.   For some I really suggest checking out Bitmain Warranty and think of that extra up front as getting you a piece of mind.
67  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread Aug 29 to Sept 12? Prize = $25.00 Picks are now closed>. on: September 10, 2016, 02:56:26 PM
Bitwsidom back up around 2 percent:

Bitcoin Difficulty:    220,755,908,330
Estimated Next Difficulty:    225,376,256,569 (+2.09%)
Adjust time:    After 273 Blocks, About 1.8 days
Hashrate(?):    1,601,576,100 GH/s

It has been nice to see coins go over the 620's mark.  Were around 626 on Coinbase so still pretty good for around one week time period ( http://www.coindesk.com/price/ ).
68  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S7 Software For Mining on: September 10, 2016, 02:45:22 PM
Okay thank you. Do you think it is necessary to join a mining pool or is solo fine as well. Does cgminer allow solo mining?

You really would want to join a pool as that way you will get payment's that are more constant. But today joining a pool is very easy and with S7 kinda plug and chug.

If you do solo mine with one S7 it is more of a "lotto mining" and chances are you will never hit a block, so no payment.   If you do want to solo mine I would use a pool already setup vs having to set one up.  You can go over to Antpool and set your worker to solo, so you can solo there if you want.   Or take a look at ckpool for example: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=763510.0 is another good option.
69  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S9 Hashing Board Issue on: September 10, 2016, 02:34:00 PM
Hi

The realtime speed is around 8000 but the average speed is at 12,400. I just checked my one day hashrate at Slush pool. It is 12.38 Th/s. I'm not sure why the realtime speed does not show from this board, but it seems to work well for the pass 3 days. Maybe there is a bug in the hashboard firmware?

It's hard to say without looking at the miner remotely or in person.  Most of time if realtime showed 8 and average showed 12+ over time we would expect it to slow down to the 8 area.   That number and lack of number of board made it appear this way.

But if you are getting poolside 12+ for 3 day's in a row sounds like it is error in reporting vs a problem with a hashing board.  Which is a lot better really them having a hashiing board going out.  I would keep an eye on it but sounds like it's working good and I would not mess with it on firmware or other setting's at this point as long as you keep getting that good poolside hashing speed.
70  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 5 Antminers down, can't get them back up ? on: September 06, 2016, 07:50:26 PM
Wonder if they are blocking/filtering traffic to the mining pools...

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes, I thought about this too but they should show up on the network and I should be able to log into them via a web browser. I also asked them and they said they aren't blocking anything. Strange..

There are just so many possibilities out there.   You mention an Ethernet cable working on laptop but not on miner.  You might ask if they are using anything with mac address whitelisting where authorized devices only can't connect.

It sounds like something changed over the weekend on network side.   And again assuming it's modern Cisco gear it's hard to say what all it could be.   You might bring one of the miners to the networking person/persons and see what they see when connecting as I would guess they have much more information then you have on network logs.
71  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Please help!!! on: September 06, 2016, 07:44:05 PM
I got another spondoolies sp20 miner and it's works well, but this one is broken or something wrong with them, any recommendations what can i do with this miner?

It sounds like this is a new miner to you on this unit.   I would check your router on connected devices and see if you see a IP there for it.  You can use programs to scan, but logging into router is pretty solid method.

If you don't see it I would ask seller what they had the IP setting's on.  They can tell you if you are looking for DHCP or a certain static IP.  If you don't see it and seller is no help, know PSU works, good ethernet, etc. then you can look for a recovery SD card image.  It appears no longer to be on SP site so might take some searching through forum.
72  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Avalon 6 Miner - Winter Mining - Notlist3d - Also FAQ and Help on: September 06, 2016, 07:33:56 PM
I know Avalon recently released new software for the A6.  Should I update my rpi controller with it, or should I keep using the BlockC image?  Did BlockC release a new image based on the update from Avalon?  Their site, http://www.blockc.co/, seems to be down.  Thanks for any info.

Personally I am of the mindset if it's working leave it alone on firmware (unless good new feature happens).   I did get rid of my A6's a bit back due to efficiency so I have not been able to test any recent update.   I did run with the BlockC image entire time I owned them without issues.   So it works fine but I agree it is dated at this point.

Any updates are going to be from Canaan Creative most likely if you do want to try them out - https://canaan.io/en/support/ .  I'm not sure with big buyout what BlockC and Canaan relationship is currently.  But if you do upgrade please let us know how it goes!
73  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S9 Hashing Board Issue on: September 06, 2016, 04:33:34 PM
Thank you for you suggestion. I live in Thailand. After a few attemps to upgrade the lastest firmware, the average speed increased to 12,500 GH/s. But I'm not sure that the speed will remain after restart, so I'm not dare to do it. As you can see, the chips are not really die, instead it seems like a software problem. The shipping cost to bitmain china would be around $35, but I don't want to risk lossing or damaging the board. I have emailed to bitmain support, but no any response yet except the autogenereated reply.

It is not usual "x" everybody know. It will not dissapear easily by disconnecting power. For now I lost 100 GH/s in total. Mine is batch 6 12.93 GH/s model.  Cry

This is the screenshot.
..

Chain 4 is not showing a realtime speed and if you look above the reatime is around 8.  What happens to speed after a few more hour's of running?  Just checking if it goes down closer to the 8 or what happens.

Phil's idea of running at a lower frequency would be next thing you should do if it does drop hashing speed after a few more hour's.   It can help if you do have some bad chips doing this sometimes.
74  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 5 Antminers down, can't get them back up ? on: September 06, 2016, 04:25:32 PM
Greetings, My first post !! Thanks all !!

I have 5 total Antminers all running at my office. 2X Antminers S7-LN, 2X Antminers S5 and 1 Antminer S3. All were running perfectly for weeks at my office. Over the past weekend, they all stopped mining. I VPN'd into my office and was able to connect to them all, but they all showed DEAD under mining status so I rebooted them all. None of them came back on the network after the reboot. I couldn't connect to them with a browser and was unable to ping any of there address. I spoke to our IT department and long story short, there was an issue with a Cisco switch so they rebooted the switch and they said everything should be good. I rebooted the S7-LN miners and had a red LED and was unable to connected to it. I tested the Ethernet cable going to it with a laptop and was able to get online, no problems. Both S7-LN have the same issue. I also rebooted the remaining miners and none of them mine. Seems like same issue. I factory defaulted both S7-LNs and still same issue, red LED.

Does anybody know what could be causing this ? Is there a known issue with Cisco switches working with Antminers ? Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!

Thanks,
Mike

You are going to need to talk to the "IT Department" most likely.   No there is not a issue with mining UNLESS your company has blocked something, which we cannot know.   There are a ton of things they could do to block your miner's or the trafffic.  There are so many scenarios it's hard to saw what they could be blocking.

Are these something your company has authorized to run on the network?  If so I would think one of your networking personal would be able to help much more then vague guesses you will get here.  We just don't know enough to be of much help with info provided.
75  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Electrical company keeps checking my box! WTF!!!! SOS plz HELP! on: September 06, 2016, 04:05:25 PM
well you guys are not going to believe it. Another new usps driver today. this time a young blond. wth? so sketchy. really that's the only word to describe it. sketchy.

UPS and your WA state electrical are not working together to find high usage off electrical, I would think electrical company does it on their own.  If you honestly thin you have peeked electrical companies interest you might just give them a call.  Tell them you saw the meter reader coming multiple times, and figure usage the reason and explain you run a lot of computer equipment (could say bitcoin asic but they most likely wont know what it is).

Are you in a "free" electricity apartment or something like that?  I could see issues if you blew through tons of power on some setups like that.  But that would be very few in this category.

I am lucky and live on real farmland so they don't really care how much I use as long as I pay for it.  I have went up pretty high at times and lower at some times never had an issue.
76  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S7 Hashing board problem on: September 06, 2016, 03:50:29 PM
One my hashing board stop working.
On that malifuncional boad in sistem tray of miner two board got normal temperature and are show 45 chips active. And hash rate is good.
On bad board show only 40 chips active and has always temperature 35c. (and got less ooooooo) -No hashing

I change cable and power supply from working boards and all is the same.
Did are bad chips on board? (But if is that why not showing xxxxx in system tray?)

Please help

Are you able to take a screenshot of your status screen that is much easier to understand.   Also how long have you had the machine did you get it from official source or second hand? Just trying to guage what miner's life has been like, some have much easier then others.

Also what does it look like on poolside what kind of hashrate are you getting over on it?
77  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: USD $20k to start mining on: September 06, 2016, 03:45:56 PM
Hello,

New here.

What do you recommend to start mining with USD $20,000 to begin.

I am based in Malaysia and electricity tariff is currently at $0.09/kwh.

how many miners can I set up with this?

antminer s9 are out of stock currently?

Where can I source for cheap machines?

thank you!

My advice is start off slow and build up  vs throwing 20k in all at once.  If mining is $0.09/kwh you might look into hosting center's as they have info structure already set up.  And they have cooling already setup in these hosting center's.

I guess it could vary depending on your local weather if Wikipedia is close with a yearly average of "(80.6 °F)." I would think you would have some cooling you will need to do which is more money.  Keep in mind with 20k you would need to set  up electrical, cooling, network, PSU's, etc.  It can add up so not all your money goes into buying miners if your wanting to mine in your own mining area.  So we really cannot say how many miner's you would be able to buy with budget.  Also we don't know how many your electrical can handle which is big.

As far as "cheap machines" normally they are not the newest gen, but if your electrical cost is right for any chance you need to get current gen.  So your options would best be waiting till in stock and order S9 or R4.

That is my 2 cent's above.  But start small and then grow or look into hosing are your best bet's I think.
78  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: why now many people are buying Antminer s1 and antminer s3? on: September 06, 2016, 03:34:23 PM
Winter is coming.

Also the S3's were built like tanks in my mind, that metal case with the reliability I foresee them running in "free" electricity for quiet a while.  They can heat up a room which some tend to do.   I have stopped doing it myself last winter but it is a valid way to try to have a lower heating bill.

Not sure on S1's though how many will really run them this winter.   And those with S3 might be able to jump to S5's that are used for not a ton.  So could be the winter of S5's for those with free electricity.

Looks like it went down slightly which s always nice to see, espically with still being above 600 in value:
