I think all the newcomers should bookmark this [GUIDES] on Bitcointalk. Index thread (until there is a dedicated subforum?) (by LoyceV)

Welcome to the bitcointalk family Smiley
62  Other / Meta / Re: LoyceV's deMerit source application on: September 28, 2018, 04:35:26 AM
I think you're better as a Merit source rather than deMerit source. I also against the deMerit concept. In some merit abuse cases, I have seen that we exactly couldn't find the distinguishing difference whether that post to be merited or not. Giving away your sMerits to a post that you think deserved to be merited can be seen as a non-worthy post to be merited by another member. Choosing a post to award merit is subjective by each members opinions even though theymos mentioned merit only the quality posts. So how a single user can identify whether that post to be a deMerited one while we are not knowing the intention of the merit sender who merited that post at the first place.

If we can start a child board or sub-board under Meta for Merit abuse cases would be great rather going complicated concepts. This is just an idea, how about consensus process before deMeriting?

If its clear-cut case where we all can agree that post is not a merit worthy one, then its ok to be deMerit (if deMerit concept accept).
63  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best merit receiver, merit sorce and DT position member. on: September 28, 2018, 03:51:00 AM

Hey, guys, can you give me few merits for incorrect merit data that I shared. I have also found some merit sources and some DT members through research.

This is how I see what you shared. Make some effort when starting a thread rather just follow the crowd.

Can we start a self-moderated thread?
~Snipped~
This is our thread>>>https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2106234.0
AFAIK, only if that thread is locked or trashed (at the moment, you can't).
That means we all are allowing to run that chit-chat show (feel sorry for bitcointalk). AFAIK, I'm unable to create a local thread even that thread locked or trashed (very unlikely) due to the rank barrier. Am I correct?

Quote
"mdayonliner", you might want to move all of your "recently created threads" from that section (Other languages/locations) into Archival.
- I'm pretty sure what you did is against the rules (there's already an active "Bengali [bangla] local thread").
That means there is no hope Sad

65  Other / Meta / Re: Can we have a local thread? on: September 26, 2018, 07:05:45 PM
You should either ask someone in a higher rank to create the topic for you, but in that case, you won't have the self-moderation to yourself.
I can help OP to create one for him.
Thanks for your kindness words @mdayonliner. That's why this forum become so popular with the crypto enthusiastic peoples around the world. Most of the people's are here ready to help newcomers to the feild. I even didn't expect such a quick responses.

Quote
OP: If that is ok then PM me the contents of the topic and I will create the self-moderated topic for you. When you will see spammy posts then report them to the mods. In addition every day or few times a week you can PM me with the link of the posts those need to be deleted, I will delete them.
I will send you a PM the contents what am I going to shared within next few days. I will make sure that thread is not an place where to post spam or chit chat to increase there post count.

FYI, I do not know your language.
I'm hoping it's not an issue Smiley

As jetty said, go here and make a new thread - what happens?
Oops this is what happens when I'm going to create a thread. I think @Alone055 is spot on about this matter.

BTW I just want to know why it's not allowed to create a self-modareted thread with their own language regardless of their rank(at least for avove full member). Because as I already mentioned, the old thread is filled only with chit chats. Why can't we delete the whole thread and allowing to create an self-moderated thread

Note - The old thread has been started by a Full member but not the Sr. Member. When rules changed?

66  Other / Meta / Can we have a local thread? on: September 26, 2018, 04:48:32 PM
I am from Sri Lanka and we don't have a local board but the thread. The problem is the "Sinhala" thread is becoming a useless thread and I don't even bother to posting there. It's full of chitchats and I just want to start a new thread for the people actually cares about the crypto and other valuable areas. Can we start a self-moderated thread? because there are so many members out there who really want to discuss with crypto related things with our native language. I have already chatted with few genuine crypto enthusiasts and they also want to check whether is it possible to start a new thread with our native language as a self-moderated thread where they all can discuss without those shit talks. So is there any possibility for that? If not what are our alternatives?

I already send a PM to Cyrus by asking this matter and I still didn't get any reply from him either.

67  Other / Meta / Re: What if.. on: September 26, 2018, 12:40:10 PM
all the OP creators have to clean up their thread by themself. By creating a post, they receive automatically admin rights for that certain thread.
Why? They are more focused on the subject. They get responsibility, that leads to more mature behavior.
Takes ton of workload off from forum mods who can pay more attention to thousands of op creators rather than to millions of posts
That's why we have the option of creating "self-moderated threads". This is already discussed in the forum and better to reply your comments there rather starting a similar thread.

Link - Self-moderated thread initiative. More work for us, less for the Mods.

Quote
There could even be upvote, downvote system linked to the thread. If it is negative enough the thread gets locked.. no massive megathreads. More upvotes mean more longer post slots, seems like a quality discussion going on..
This is already discussed and it's not a viable option either. More alts can gain more upvotes Grin

Only moderators can distribute merits to OP creators. Then OP creators can distribute it to the posts that are on topic, with quality of course etc.
No way anyone would agree on this suggestion. Moderators are here to moderate the forum but not distribute the Merits. That's why we have 120 merit sources. OP could only gain the merits for the thread once if only OP will be able to distribute merits to the other posts in his/her own thread. OP couldn't get any merits for the replies made by OP in his/her own thread even though those replies are good.

Your suggestion is good if sources can delegate the OP as his/her apprentice to pass the Merits for the thread replies without increasing the Merits number of the OP. This suggestion is also already suggested by @Jet cash in his dMerits introduction thread.

68  Other / Meta / Re: So I've Become a Merit Source... Need Some Advice on: September 25, 2018, 05:51:59 PM
I know...  I'm lazy.  But I wanna spread the love.  Lol.
Bill gates once said that he really likes to recruit the lazy peoples to his company because he believes they will somehow find a way to do the work with minimum effort but with good productivity. Maybe theymos likes the way bill gates seeing the laziness. Cheesy

How about we just send you links to some of our posts we think are merit-worthy?    Grin
I don't think that's a good idea. We are normally tends to think that our every post is merit worthy. That's the human nature. So I would like to suggest vise versa of what you have suggested. If we can find the post of others which deserved to be Merited, just share it here and then OP can check whether that perticular post deserved to be Merited.
69  Other / Meta / Re: A formula for determining Worthiness of Poster (WoP) on: September 25, 2018, 10:22:10 AM
Its a rough guide for determining the potential chance that what somebody has to say is going to be interesting.
If this is what you're looking for, why don't you just divide Merit by Posts? Add one to give Newbies an unbiased chance, so:
WoP2.0 = (Merit earned + 1) / Posts. That would give:
satoshi: 2.10
theymos: 0.33
LoyceV: 0.17
soniclord: 0.00
I'm also agreed with LoyceV because just see the WoP of following two users.

WoP of Zaarin = [(0+1)/3136]x266 = 0.0848

WoP of krizpogi18 = [(0+1)/2662]x224 = 0.0841

So do you believe the Zaarin is worthy poster than krizpogi18 when comparing just two of them? I believe the answer is No. Zaarin was registered earlier than the other user and where he achieved more activity than krizpogi18. We cannot take the number of activity as a criterion when we calculating the WoP because the activity is the second barrier after merits for avoiding users to rank up just by gaining merits whether truly or abusive manner. If activity barrier isn't there users will ultimately rank up just gaining merits. What theymos has done is put the time factor into the equation when calculating the user rank which stopped the users getting rank up sometimes within one night (we all know merit is trading in the black market). That will give users also extra time for being active and being a responsible member.

In a nutshell, multiplying the activity when calculating the WoP would not yield a good figure for a comparison of users.

I became fascinated when I saw one particular poster had 2600+ posts, zero merit and such a low activity. Now with the new merit requirements my fascination is reinvigorated: who can find a score lower than krizpogi18 (0.084)? If you find one I may very well issue you a merit for your work!

Lowest I see is

Zaarin - 0.08474036214

3,139 posts. no merit
Post count of Zaarin is currently 3,136 but not 3,139

You need more decimal places in your number to see if I win.  Smiley
Even with the more decimal places, you didn't win Vod in this time Tongue

Vod's BPIP also uses a formula for most recognized posters - on a similar theme, but is based on merit, activity and trust: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4799468.0
I think we don't want to consider the trust when calculating the WoP because trust is nothing to do with the worthiness of the poster. Having a higher trust score doesn't mean the poster is worthy or vice versa. Its ok for when calculating the recognition as done in BPIP

70  Other / Meta / Re: Banned aid should have its own board on: September 25, 2018, 06:53:11 AM
This is what I got when I started the thread about asking the same thing as @JetAid suggested,

By considering all the facts my initial impression about new subforum has been changed to two best possible methods suggested by Welsh and LTU_btc as follows,(Thanks for your practical solutions)

- Showing the reasons of banned when someone login into a banned account
- Showing massage to contact Theymos/Cyrus when someone gets banned

So I'm hoping someone having powers will see this thread and take actions someday. Lets together make Meta section clog free(at least less) Smiley

I also support this idea and if we cannot start a subforum, just implement the above two suggestions proposed by @Welsh(Now working as staff) and @LTU_btc.

Now the problem getting even worsed with the Newbies merit begging threads. When we starting a thread regarding some matters about the forum suddenly getting disappeared with those ban appeal threads and the merit begging threads.
71  Other / Meta / Re: [RUPL] Ranking-Up Pipe Line of Forum Members on: September 24, 2018, 05:21:04 PM
Until the last merit decision, I started to learn something in the forum. Obviously I felt sorry for my late start. After this last decision, of course, my enthusiasm was broken. I spend time in the forum again, but I can't adapt as much as before. Merit is not very easy to win, unfortunately.

You already posted the same post in the Turkish board with your Türkçe language after 2 minutes you have posted in this thread. The thing I didn't get is why you used the google translator to translate the English content into Turkish. I assume you're a Turkic.

Link - Google translated content

If you are here to learn, you are not holding back by anyone even the new merit requirement. Speaking about learning we all are not too late to learn. We all are learning from womb-to-tomb. Merit is not something you win, but the appreciation that you get from others for the contribution you have made. It doesn't need to be a marvellous one, but posting quality stuff will eventually gain merits.
72  Other / Meta / Re: Writing a welcome message on: September 24, 2018, 04:33:43 PM
Kudos to theymos by putting a stop for waiting game and lot of good initiatives has been taken since last week. Can we implement following changes also when users got banned because it will reduce a lot of unnecessary threads in Meta

- Showing the reason of banning when someone login into a banned account
- Showing massage to contact theymos/Cyrus when someone gets banned

And also the welcome message shall be a concise one as already suggested by others. Ann Wylie, the writer (researcher) highlighted that if the average length in a piece was fewer than eight words long, readers understood the 100% of its content. But sometimes it is still doubtful whether newbies will read the welcome message regardless of its length.

Don't even need a token, just not let them post until they pass the quiz. 3 questions randomly selected from a pool of ~200 occasionally updated crowd-sourced questions should do the trick. Speaking of which, I could supply the trick ones, like "How much do you need to pay the Legendaries for merit?"
Oh no that's an easy one since some of them are already knowing the answer. How about this "How much activity needed to become a Legendary?" Tongue

74  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk.org YouTube channel? on: September 24, 2018, 12:39:42 PM
I'm hoping new members are not required to subscribe bitcointalk.org youtube channel as a pre-requirement of registration if theymos start a youtube channel Tongue
These days every YouTubers asked to click the notification button

Given the number of threads in Meta over the last few days/weeks/months complaining about the state of the forum, the ridiculous levels of bounty spam, asking for more mods and suggesting about 100 other ideas for improvement, would it not be wise to focus on the forum first before taking on a new project?
Agreed with both hands and diversification is good but when we are going to do so many experiments wouldn't yield maximum benefits in any of the trials

75  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Announcing BPIP - The Bitcointalk Public Information Project! on: September 24, 2018, 06:31:09 AM
Hey @Vod, is there any glitch in the merit stats? I didn't receive any airdrop merits and all were earned merits. But there is a difference between the "Current Merit" and the "Merit Received" which isn't correct.

76  Other / Meta / Re: Enhanced newbie restrictions & requirements on: September 24, 2018, 05:16:36 AM
Couldn't resist.

No, we are not here to throwing bones Grin

then why with me, why go back to the newbie, is there something wrong with me or the engine error  Huh
I saw the activities of the old people, commented a little but they got on the move faster   Roll Eyes  Shocked
I just look at your post history. Most of the post you're posted in the ANN threads and its filled with bounty reports and annoying big images. So its quite obvious why you didn't receive any merit.

Old people have the higher engine capacity like V12 but seem like the error is in your engine. It's time to change the engine or the entire vehicle before you're going to hit by some of the old member or mod Grin

If you're considering about the modifications, Read this manual and then you can move fast like the oldies.

78  Other / Meta / Re: Discover new title(rank) introduced by Jet Cash- "spambies" on: September 23, 2018, 05:27:50 PM
~snip~

Those people's are just made complain instead of contribute something really they are spambie. Few people's are joined less then week and they are complaining about merit and meriting legendary. Actually they are not aware about all of rank and required. They just like to make complain.
I'm also agreeing with you and they just wasting their energy just by creating so many redundent threads in Meta. I think those spambies or newbies just to be relaxed, take a deep breath and read some of the Merited posts. Then you can identify how much they have put before starting a thread. By looking at the most threads in meta these days from those Merit beggers and I just felt that they just suddenly wake up from like coma and complaining about the system which is already implemented about nearly 8 months.

We all were started as Newbies but being so long as a Newbie/Jr. Member is nothing to do with the merit or the system but all yours and yours only. If you can't change the system better to adopt it rather complaining.

@OP, sorry for being somewhat off topic but it's worth to be mentioning. Because everyone is busy with talking about demoted newbies or spambies and forgotten about other side of the coin.

LoyceV is so close to becoming the 2nd member of it's kind after theymos. He is actually 13 Merits away for reached the 2000 Merits with 1000 earned Merits.

He has created a name for that rank  too "self- made Legendary" isn't that cool Smiley

Can you guess the rank?? It's my own creation and I called it Elite Legendary
How about self-made Legendary?
79  Other / New forum software / Showing the price of "bitcoin" in the dashboard on: September 23, 2018, 12:05:50 PM
I have seen that lot of space between the username and news feed bar being wasted without any proper usage. So I just wanted to suggest, why can't we just use that space to display the live price tracking of BTC as I shown below. The main objective of this forum is also discussing about the BTC. So if members able to updated with the latest price of BTC wouldn't be a bad idea. I just wanted to know what other members have to say about this suggestion and I will lock the thread if this is already discussed.
