61  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Please can we delete the Instagram crap on beginners. on: June 27, 2018, 11:39:05 PM
If we were to remove instagram we would have to be consistent and remove Twitter and Facebook too. I'm not against the idea of removing the bounty board all together to be honest. Keep the altcoin boards but just remove the bounty board.
62  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are you running a Bitcoin node? You SHOULD be on: June 27, 2018, 11:35:49 PM
centralized exchanges, kyc, blockexplorers, social networks accounts, javascripts, cookies, malewares ................ the list is very long.
dex like bisq can help a little, but not so much against someone rich able to pay fees.

Most of these things you have listed are all optional. Social media accounts can only be linked when you have posted the address publicly with them. Javascript and cookies can be disabled via extensions. Malware can be avoided by using safe practices. If you have malware though the least of your concerns would be privacy they likely already have taken your coins. Blockexplorers only list the Blockchain. KYC can be avoided by trading person 2 person through websites like localbitcoins. Do not use centralized exchanges. I do not see how any of these issues are related to privacy with Bitcoin though.
63  Other / Meta / Re: The newbie 'broken record' threads, and an idea. on: June 27, 2018, 11:22:54 PM
I don't think so. There are mods assigned to specific boards for a reason. Altcoin Board needs more mods, and the volunteers for that is - 0 so far(?).
I am sure that a lot of people would be willing to help out but there does not seem to be any interest in adding any moderators to these boards. There have been a few threads recently suggesting that certain boards get more moderators but to no avail.
64  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why everyone thinks institutions will buy Bitcoins from exchanges? on: June 27, 2018, 11:16:59 PM
I think there is no advantage for the government to buy bitcoin in large quantities except for the profit from the money being pumped. Buying a large amount of bitcoin does not mean the government can have full rights to bitcoin and even though they do, they will just become anonymous.

They could purchase a lot of coins and then dump it at a prime time where they attack the network via a majority attack which causes panic and confusion and could result in a lot of panic selling. This is not very plausible but would cause short term instability and could prevent more people investing in it in the future.
65  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Do you have the experience of forgetting your bitcoin passwords? on: June 27, 2018, 11:14:37 PM
There are several services and programs which can help but I would only recommend using trusted services and opon source software. I have not checked your link that you provided but if it is not open source then dont use it.

When dealing with sensitive data like your wallet you should take precaution especially when providing a third party program with both your wallet and possible password.
66  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is there a disadvantage in the publicity of cryptocurrency? on: June 27, 2018, 11:11:10 PM
Of course there is good and bad news affects the price of Bitcoin often and without the popular websites spreading this news Bitcoin would probably be a lot more stable than it has been this year. But this can also work to your favor if you are a keen trader.
67  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Advantages and disadvantages of Bitcoin 🌟 on: June 27, 2018, 11:07:29 PM
I think the biggest disadvantages for me are lack of regulations and uncertainty related to bitcoin, it is not backed by anything so it is very speculative and people think it is unreliable.
Lack of regulation is a disadvantage to you? Why so? I think thats one of the reasons why Bitcoin is sought after due to it being unregulated and largely untaxed throughout the world.

It is backed by something what you mean is its not backed by something physical like gold.
68  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are you running a Bitcoin node? You SHOULD be on: June 27, 2018, 11:04:12 PM
I'm 100% with you, privacy is very important, Anne Frank was a criminal !!!
Running a full node is the only way to use bitcoin and keep some privacy. But there are so many ways for an attacker to break your privacy that running a full node alone gives to you a very little additional protection. So I think advertising a full node to keep the privacy will only misguide newbies.
I guess running a node yourself is better than trusting someone else though so its still probably good practice to do it to avoid issues that the OP provided.

I'm curious though was you are referring to when you say there is many ways to break someones privacy?
69  Other / Meta / Re: Merit/activity ratio. on: June 27, 2018, 11:00:42 PM
There are a few people who could do this but the data would not be accurate. The person you saw with 1000 activity and 1000 merit was probably just given that because they were a legendary when the merit system started. It doesn't provide accurate data because the initial merit people start off with wasn't earned through the merit system but was granted for free.
70  Other / Meta / Re: The newbie 'broken record' threads, and an idea. on: June 27, 2018, 10:52:47 PM
What i thought of was an idea where an Introductory section was implemented into the forum, whereby, if someone were to join the forum they would be pointed to this specific section and would be asked what they are joining for, what they hope to achieve, what can they bring to the table etc etc. Basically, a way to see if people are genuine or not and in a way-POLICE (politely) members prior to actually posting elsewhere.
Read what theymos said:
Limiting newbie participation is very harmful for a community. Newbie jail will never return: I consider the newbie-jail period to have been extremely damaging to the forum. When barriers to participation are too high, then the best people often just won't go to the trouble of joining, and the people who are willing to jump through the hoops are often people who aren't good for the community: people with nothing better to do, scammers, get-rick-quickers, etc. Having a permanent newbie jail policy would improve things a lot in the short-term, but would end up being a fatal poison to the community.

There needs to be more action taken by staff. More thread-locking. Despite their efforts, I still see many sections filled with a cacophony of bullshit, spewing dozens of pages of lusterless incoherence.
Not only thread locking, but thread thrashing. You can't find one good topic to post in and have legitimate discussions in, when you go to sections like Bitcoin Discussion, Trading Discussion and Altcoin Discussion. Not to forget the Economics and Off-topic board. I want to visit the off-topic board and have some fun but no, the spam is just too much.

theymos suggested that he would only remove bounties as a last resort too but in my opinion that is the only way that we are going to stop this nonsense. We just have to let other forums deal with the bounties. We can still have altcoin discussion but just remove bounties. Bitcoin discussion and other boards are probably being neglected due to the workload being shifted to the altcoin boards
71  Other / Meta / Re: assistance from moderators on: June 27, 2018, 08:30:16 PM
both admins could see the original account was hacked, I had proven my identity. Its just a matter now of me being able to get the recovery email - which cannot be sent because the account in question is not 'active'. One of the mods needs to re-activate the account on their end - so that I can get the recovery email.

It still requires a signed message I'm not sure if you have provided this to the admins but this is the only way they are going to give it back to you. If they havent answered then its probably because you havent supplied this information.
72  Other / Meta / Re: Off topic needs cleaning up on: June 27, 2018, 07:16:36 PM
Off topic should be fun, but it seems to be full of schoolkids withour many original ideas or opinions.
Now I also thought that way. I have started my first thread in off topic section regarding "Climate change and the power crisis". But only 3 members shared their valuable thoughts with me. I think it's only for fun( don't know that board established only for fun), and I should better off from that board.

Its because not many people go to the off topic board as its often polluted with spammers and account farmers posting generic 1 liners trying to get activity. That topic could go in the Politics and society board and you will probably get more replies there.
73  Other / Meta / Re: Tool to run online SQL queries over Full Merit Data on: June 27, 2018, 06:32:15 PM
This could spit out some interesting data what about gathering a certain rank like "hero members" and spitting out the usernames of the ones which have received at least 5 merits what sort of command would need to be put in?

I will have a look tomorrow and add the rank information per user in another table, perhaps LoyceV has already it available, in that case would be quite fast to include that in.

After that should not be a problem giving an answer to that question.

At the moment since there is no rank you can run this for all the users:

Link because the forum is blocking sql in the message:

Nice one I just tried the tool and its incredibly fast so good work on that. Keep on bringing us these sort of things please as I'm sure everyone appreciates these data dumps and tools.
74  Other / Meta / Re: Limited action of Newbie and Jr.Member on: June 27, 2018, 05:51:08 PM
Just prevent newbies/jr members from bumping the topics and that should solve most of the problems with the bots. I do not think limiting newbies and lower ranked members from posting a certain amount of posts per day is the way to go. Its basically a newbie jail which was far from perfect.

76  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Is Ledger Nano S really better than a free paper wallet? on: June 27, 2018, 12:04:19 AM
HCP, that's a great pictoral.  Unfortunately I am not getting past your step #2.

In other words, it does not give the option to "select coin" and it does not give me any wallet options.

My Ledger wallet screen does not go past your step #1.

I've been working at this for hours, from multiple different computers, and it's frustrating to say the least.

I'm sure Ledger Nano S is better than paper wallets, but if you can not get it to work, what is it worth?

Contact the support team if you are still having problems with this. It could be an issue on your side or it could be a defected machine and they should replace it free of charge.
77  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Is Ledger Nano S really better than a free paper wallet? on: June 26, 2018, 10:28:47 PM
Yes, a hardware wallet will be considered safer up until we cannot trust the manufacturer anymore. A paper wallet, while also isolated from any sort of device on its own, loses the upper hand as soon as you require spending the funds since it requires importing your key onto a computer (a computer that might be compromised). A Hardware wallet on the other hand can be used even on a compromised computer without having to worry due to it having its own operating system.

For long term storage the paper wallet is likely the better option due to it being free and requiring no investment. You are right that a hardware wallet is much better for those requiring regular access to their coins. This is especially relevant to those that trade daily.

But if you only access it now and then a paper wallet can be generated again within 5 minutes. It all depends on whether you want to make the investment for the benefits of accessing your coins regularly and securely.
78  Other / Meta / Re: Altcoins topics in the beginners section? on: June 26, 2018, 09:30:00 PM
When in doubt just report the post and then wait to see if your accuracy either falls or goes up/stays the same. My view is that as long as its not a simple question and is discussion about bounties or altcoins then it should be moved.
79  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Porn anyone? on: June 26, 2018, 08:39:59 PM
A lot of the bigger Adult related sites are looking at other Alt coins like Vice Industry Token (VIT) - See for example what Playboy TV did, https://www.coindesk.com/playboy-tv-to-accept-crypto-payments-for-exclusive-adult-content/

Bitcoin is a much better solution and will even be faster and cheaper than most other Alt coins, once the Lightning Network is fully implemented.

Some people on Tor, like to ask for Monero and Dash for their content, because it is more anonymous than other coins.  Roll Eyes
Was supposed to mention about VIT(vice industry) and XVG(verge) when it comes to this porn thingy and since we do talk about Bitcoin , just like been said above ive seen some services which do offer live cam shows which is on the payment is on bitcoin or any other payment options.
When it comes to anonymity then i would hands down for Monero. Porn industry is already being utilized here on crypto.

You could just use a clean Bitcoin address which has not been posted anywhere else on the internet by you and do it that way. Monero is not as popular as Bitcoin and there would be no real incentive as a business model to accept it as they are just limiting their profits.

Monero should probably push for this though as it would be a great incentive for people to buy Monero over Bitcoin and other altcoins.
80  Other / Meta / Re: Why my post is deleted by forum moderator in ann thread? on: June 26, 2018, 08:01:25 PM
Probably was off topic because thats not what announcement threads are for. Anyway if the moderators had something against you would they not delete your scam accusation thread as well? Stop jumping to conclusions.
