You know, if I went to that thread now and looked at all the posts, I believe I would find at least 20-30% of those that I could report and that would be deleted - but I'm not active in that board because I don't consider it too important since this forum is mostly focused on Bitcoin. Someone reported your post because it was in front of his eyes, the moderator agreed and deleted it - so always think twice before making a post, especially if there are 24 pages of posts before yours Wink

Thank you, I will now.  Smiley

I think the secret sauce here is to avoid replying with a 10-page thread, especially if it's opinionated or the issue/topic has been resolved. Although I understand the need to respond to a thread that interests you, there are instances when responding to a thread can result in an old thread being resurrected, which spambuster will flag unless the reply is thoughtfully constructed.

But hey! It's just me and this tip actually works for me.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm gonna do. It kinda sucks to know you have a flock of vultures circling every time you make a post, but, whatever, knowledge is power.  Cool
62  Other / Meta / Re: Respect (or the lack of it) on: February 16, 2022, 04:22:30 PM
But, whatever. At least now I know not to reply to long threads, or at least what might happen if I do so.

I think that this is not the best attitude. I think that you should simply not mind if you get - now and then - a post removed.
Of course, it's up to you.

Keeping in mind your experience with spam, you should understand that they're human (and they can even make mistakes).
You can rely on Meta, you get forum related answers here.

I understand, but making a post takes time and work. This time, the post was just a few lines long, and it wasn't important at all (it was just a couple of movies), but I've had other posts/threads deleted before.
In any case, when something produces any kind of discomfort to me, I just move to eliminate it. It may not be the best attitude, but it sure works.

About the mods being human, yes, they are. So they are at a gazillion other forums. Check the Ubuntu Forum https://ubuntuforums.org/. I made a mistake: they don't have a million users, they have 2,157,000. And the mods are also human, and they work for free.

I will just say that since the idea came up that maybe one day the admin will introduce badges for best reporters and since we have the Bitcointalk Community Awards which among other things has an award for best spam buster, many are actually looking for "bad" posts to increase their report statistics. If you want to make rapid progress in that way, the best boards for that are Off-topic and altcoins boards.

As for the deleted post, you should know that it happens to everyone sometimes, and it is best to avoid such mega threads because there is a good chance that someone will report the post taking into account all the unofficial rules of the forum.

Thank you, I didn't know such way to progress really existed. Talk about stepping on other people's heads.
In any case, I come to this forum to learn and to help others if I can. I don't have the stomach to be preying on other members' work like that.

Thank you both for taking the time to explain.  Cool
63  Other / Meta / Re: Respect (or the lack of it) on: February 16, 2022, 03:40:45 PM

I don't think that you imagine how many posts are deleted on a daily basis and how many would ask for explanations. No.
If one has doubts, he can ask in Meta, he will get answers - most probably from other users - understand and move on. It's just a post.

I think I do. In fact, I had to quit as a mod on that forum because of the sheer number of spam posts I was deleting.

Interestingly it took me less than one minute to find that out. And (pun intended Cheesy) I was never a mod in ~20 forums.
Really, the topic is not even "too" long, it allows you click the "All" view and then use your browser's search...

I wasn't a mod in 20 forums.  Grin I was a user in more than 20 forums, and a mod in one.
Anyway, I'll drop it now. I don't agree with the deletion, and I don't agree with the mods' general attitude on this forum. I've seen worse (ClubProtege and the Biodiesel Infopop forums are prime examples of that), and I've seen much, much better.
But, whatever. At least now I know not to reply to long threads, or at least what might happen if I do so.
64  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Argument against vaccines quite flawed on: February 16, 2022, 03:24:43 PM
Frightening if you think about it. Got fooled once but not doing it over again. Just hoping it isn't as bad as we're thinking. A neighbor mentioned one of his coworkers got comatose after taking the booster. Not sure if it was a different brand as his "full dose" since apparently we was doing fine after those 2 shots. It's the booster that did him in.

That you don't know. The fact something happened to him after getting the booster (even if immediately after) doesn't mean it happened because of it. A lot of people are gonna die after getting any number of doses of this or any other vaccine, and a lot of people will die after not taking it. In fact, the one universal truth is that we're all going to die.
That's why one of science's golden rules is "Correlation Does Not Mean Causation".

Here's an example: Somebody died a few years ago from leptospirosis. Of course, an army of armchair scientists soon determined the person had drank a can of Coca-Cola before dying, So Coca-Cola HAD to be the cause, due to leptospira being found on rat urine. Of course, it took some time for somebody to realize leptospirosis has a 1 to 2 week onset time, so the person must have contracted the disease long before drinking the soda can. Even today, when you buy a soda can, there are people that will warn you to wash it before drinking from it, because you might get leptospirosis.
65  Other / Meta / Re: Respect (or the lack of it) on: February 16, 2022, 03:06:22 PM

I don't know how to say it nice.. Well.. you simply should not be so much sensitive. I've seen much more rude behaviors than just getting a post reported/removed. It's allowed, it's a free world.
And about getting your answer blocked, ... you don't want to reply to a "mailbox" that actually doesn't exist, right?
All in all, asking here is the best approach (!). This is Meta for.

Now about your post being removed, my take is that since both those movies were already suggested, your post didn't add any value to the topic.

Don't worry, I'm not that sensitive anyway.  Grin
My point is, I don't know, maybe I'm weird, but I believe with authority comes responsibility. If somebody deletes a post (or otherwise does something to modify somebody else's work), the least they should do is keep a channel open, should that person have any doubts about it, right?
Instead of saying "please avoid posting things that need to be deleted", and offering no real explanation as to which criteria was used for the deletion in the first place.
Maybe I'm wrong. I've been a forum moderator years ago, on another forum. I've also participated in more than 20 or so forums, from soapmaking to cars, to Linux, and I gotta say the general lack of moderation quality in this forum is quite surprising, especially considering it's not such a big forum (the Ubuntu Forum must have over a million users by now), and the mods are getting paid, while in most other forums they're volunteers.

About the post, the thread is 24 pages long. You mean to tell me I should've read through 24 pages of movie suggestions before posting, to decide if my post "added value to the thread"? It's an "Off-Topic" thread, it's not about crypto. If  that's the case (I'm asking, I know it wasn't you  Wink) how is that supposed to make any sense?
66  Other / Meta / Respect (or the lack of it) on: February 16, 2022, 02:30:10 PM
A while ago (don't remember exactly when), in the "Off Topic" board, I posted on this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5224912.0. Now I found this message:

Quote from: Bitcoin Forum
A reply of yours, quoted below, was deleted by a Bitcoin Forum moderator. Posts are most frequently deleted because they are off-topic, though they can also be deleted for other reasons. In the future, please avoid posting things that need to be deleted.

Quote
"Fracture", Anthony Hopkins, Ryan Gosling.
Anthony Hopkins playing cat and mouse with the system is amazing. Cool

"Arrival", Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner.
Not much to say about this one. You want to marry Amy Adams from the first scene to the end titles.

I'm posting here because I replied to the message asking for clarification, and my reply was "blocked by Bitcoin Forum".

So, my question was (and still is) how could a reply citing two movies on a thread asking for movie suggestions be considered "off topic", or what in that reply could be a reason for its removal?

I don't know, maybe I will get lucky here, and somebody will answer my question, instead of deleting the thread.

67  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Argument against vaccines quite flawed on: February 16, 2022, 02:01:42 PM

……
Some real scientist to be found in signature.

Still pushing your Covid claptrap eh?
A simple search of those “real scientists” found in your siggy
shows they are all debunked or full of shit.
Just like yourself.

Sirazimuth: I suggest you just ignore him. My life has become much easier since I don't have to read his drivel.
A few years ago, on another forum, another one of "his kind" started posting similar bullshit about climate change, signed by some "scientist" (who was supposed to be some bonafide expert) from a big university. A quick search showed the guy was indeed a member of said university, but he was an entomologist. Quite an "expert". A bit more reading revealed the guy had given his "expert advice" on things like dioxins, cigarettes, etc. Any time there was money to be had, he was willing to "have an opinion" on the subject.
68  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Be mindful when making transactions on PC on: February 16, 2022, 01:09:20 PM
As many as 7 times and the whole coin address is really a bit paranoid, it is enough to check the first and last 4-5 characters unless you send a transaction that is really valuable. As for the speed of transaction confirmation, you need to learn how to interpret mempool and adjust your fee accordingly if you want your transaction to be confirmed in the next block.

As far as I can see, there were times when you had to pay more for the next block in the last 24 hours, but currently, you can pay the minimum price and get a confirmation in the next block - but again, keep in mind that the time between blocks can sometimes be up to 60 minutes, although this is on average every 10 minutes.

Yeah, it is.  Grin However, checking just a few characters is a mistake, no matter how you spin it. One character is switched somewhere else, and you lose your funds. It doesn't have to be a hacker, it can just be a mistake. Check it only once, if you like, but check the whole thing.
About block time, thank you, I'll give it a read. In any case, when you're new any delay is a nightmare, and BTC is kinda slow... So, yeah, I'd definitely gonna read a lot more about it.
69  Other / Off-topic / Re: Are there any mathematicians in the forum? on: February 15, 2022, 06:14:48 PM
I study math and statistics in college right now.

Thank you! Can you tell me how to calculate it? Cool
70  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: valuable experience on: February 15, 2022, 04:49:58 PM
Experience is always valuable. Sorry yours was so bad, and so expensive.
Don't worry about people. It's a good thing you didn't go the easy way, and didn't choose to believe all crypto is a scam because you happened to fall for a bunch of scammers. In the future, you'll be more careful, and you won't fall for that kind (or any kind, hopefully) of scam. Some people will have no choice but to admit (as I did) they were wrong, and crypto is not a scam. Some others will choose to keep their heads firmly buried in the sand. In any case, it's their loss.
71  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Assumption on: February 15, 2022, 03:43:45 PM
Well, you do know what Oscar Wilde said about assuming, don't you? Grin

Besides the very serious possibility of losing one or more of my fingers (all of which I have become very attached to, over the years), and all the other reasons already exposed, I'd be very wary of any "solution" that would demand the use of a specific piece of hardware to work. That hardware could be stolen from you, could malfunction, or could simply be phased out.
72  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Argument against vaccines quite flawed on: February 15, 2022, 03:07:06 PM
I'd say the argument against vaccines is not flawed, it's non-existent.

A while ago, I heard a phrase: "For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe, no proof is enough."
People who argue against vaccines choose not to believe in evidence, nor in science, and instead believe blindly in whatever cockamamie "truth" suits their agenda.
You don't need to be a virologist to understand vaccines. You need to have a brain, and you need to use it.
There have been many diseases before covid-19 that have been eradicated (or are well on their way to be so) because of vaccine campaigns. Polio, smallpox, rubella, diphteria, tuberculosis, measles, tetanus, rabies, and a loooong list of others.
It could be understandable (to a point) if people were wary of vaccines in the beginning, when they were unproven, but now, it's just pathetic.
73  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Be mindful when making transactions on PC on: February 15, 2022, 02:01:45 PM
Well, I'm kinda paranoid, so I check the whole string like 7 times before accepting it... Grin
And even after that, that waiting period to get the transaction approved is terrible. I guess I'll get used to it after a while, but right now, it really drives me crazy...
74  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Call for help to the forum's security experts on: February 15, 2022, 01:53:34 PM
I will try Open Mandriva now, see if it works. If  it doesn't, I guess I'm gonna have to take a look at that unofficial version...

I never hear that distro, but it would be great if it works on your laptop.

Well, it didn't, and neither did Mageia. Cry
I'm off to MX Linux now...

Your guess is as good as mine... Huh
I ran the update. It had to download 368 files (which is a lot, but not unheard of in a fresh install), and it started stalling and eventually stopping after downloading a few files. Then all of a sudden, when I was at about file 160, it went back to 0.  Angry
That's when I quit, rebooted and it never started again.

I never use Solus or it's package manager (eopkg), but i definitely never experience problem with different package manager. While it's bad experience for you, take note Solus is rolling release distro, so i wouldn't expect stability from it.

But my point is I used crunchbang! for years, it was a rolling release, and it was a rock.  Huh
I don't know. I couldn't find much information on MX Linux (other than it comes with Fluxbox, which is almost as good as Openbox), so I don't know whether it's a rolling release or not. But to be honest, I was more than a bit upset yesterday afternoon, so I may take another look now...

I don't know, maybe I'm spoiled. Maybe I was lucky that all my distros worked flawlessly out of the box before, and now I'm just finding a facet of Linux I didn't know about. But reality is I've been at it for over a year, and my hardware is starting to feel it, and so is my patience. We'll see how it goes with Open Mandriva, but this is getting on my very last nerve.

It's not 90s or early 2000, most distro these days should able to work flawlessly or with little problem these days.

My point exactly. It's like people defend their right not to learn from their mistakes.
I mean, Linux was the big promise when LT developed the kernel, yet it's been DECADES and it's still nothing compared to Windows. Now, anybody that has used any Linux distro for 5 minutes understands it's far superior to Windows, not to mention it's free, yet people keep coming up with distros that are buggy, difficult to set up, unstable, high maintenance, you name it. Don't they understand that system doesn't work?

Something sounds broken in your configuration if updates are failing to install. I'm not sure if I would point that to being compromised in some way or if it's just a configuration error. Especially, since you said other distro's haven't worked in the past. It might be just because it seems you like to use older distributions which are no longer supported. I think before going through the following, it might be worth considering updating to a clean install of a newer Linux which has long term support, and go through that to see if the same inconsistencies pop up. Ubuntu or Debian are the best for this I'd like to think, they're generally the most used, and most supported. I know you've previously suggested you don't like Ubuntu, but if we can get a minimally working system, then we can potentially rule out driver issues or we could actually pinpoint the difference between your normal operating systems, and more modern up to date ones.

Otherwise, what I would do is monitor your system monitor, and also look at your incoming, and outgoing network connections for a long period of time. See if there's anything suspicious, and if there's we can work from there. Otherwise, I actually think this might be pointing to a problem at the operating system level.  The configuration errors might not be down to user error, but in compatible drivers/hardware, which is rare I'll be honest especially if your on a modern machine. I use fairly older laptops to do work, so I've come across my fair share of nuisances when it comes to bugs with Linux, so I know how frustrating they can be at times.

That would be my guess as well, but then I switch the hard drive to another one with F30, and everything works flawlessly.
I don't. I've been stuck with F30 for over a year now, because I'm unable to find a working replacement, and it's getting tremendously annoying. My laptop is from 2016, so it's not new, but it's not a dinosaur either, and so far it's been working great. It's a cheap Chinese generic one with a 1.5 GHz Celeron I bought to have a lighter (and cheaper) one to get to work, as I had a 17" HP that weighed a ton. But the HP died on me, and this one keeps on going.
I didn't think about monitoring network traffic. I can see that on Conky at all times, and it is a bit high, but nothing to write home about (under 6k download, and under 1K upload, that having 4 open tabs on Binance, which keep updating all the time).
The more I think about it, the more I believe it's just because I have a bunch of open tabs on Firefox, nothing to do with mining or the like.
We'll see... MX Linux is Debian based, so it should (hopefully) work. But, to be honest, it's a good thing I'm broke, cause I'm getting ready to light the computer on fire.  Angry

If your updates aren't working or they're failing weirdly, I would check your sources.list, and see if there's any weird repo or if there's just a repo that's incompatible with your software/hardware which could be causing the problem. I've seen people add repo's for the wrong architecture from time to time which can cause issues when updating, but then Linux usually warns you something is adrift in your sources.list.

I guess the question is; is your cpu consumption, and disk consumption only high when your connected to the internet? This doesn't prove anything either way, but if the resources are still being used without being connected to the internet, it might point to it not being a miner. Monitoring the network connections through the terminal should point out any miner, since I'd assume they'd need to make connections from outside of your machine.

Oh, I never touch my repo list. The weird part is all those were fresh installs, and they failed right from the beginning.

Shouldn't be luck, unless your using a older computer then pretty much all newer hardware works flawlessly out of the box. The only time you start running into issues is when there's older hardware, although usually this doesn't cause problems with updating, unless there's some kind of corruption or incompatibility in your sources.list.

Right now I'm at a loss. I have a Linux course I expect to follow in the near future (if I can ever get VLC to work), but right now I just want a working distro, nothing fancy. Maybe in a couple of years I can start tinkering with LFS, and get a distro to my liking...
75  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Be mindful when making transactions on PC on: February 14, 2022, 03:40:52 PM
For example, and I do hate giving this an an example as it comes across as stereotypical, but it's not meant to be that way; a older generation person that hasn't had much interest in computers, will likely be more inclined to use anti virus because they don't have the knowledge to secure themselves. However, while there's nothing wrong with this approach, there's definitely a element of risk here, since that person will likely assume that they're safe from all attacks, and therefore will be more complacent, when in fact they aren't completely secure.

Well, I am 56 years "young" (no offense taken though), so you could say I'm an "older generation person", but I have been very interested in computers since I was little, yet I don't feel I have the knowledge to effectively protect myself. I find there are so many different classes of attacks, it's overwhelming.
Incidentally I switched to Linux more than a decade ago, and felt somehow secure because of it, but since I started on cryptocurrencies I wouldn't bet on it.

So, avoiding leaks is impossible if you use the internet, and sign up to services.

Nothing is impossible. It just takes work, and, like you said, it may be inconvenient at times, but it can be done, and it has been done. Now they say web 3.0 will be more focused on personal security and privacy. We'll see...

For example, I will say something about my experience with Norton Security, which I consider almost perfect.

I used Norton once in 2005, on a computer I knew, for a fact, was infected. It didn't find anything, even when running it in "safe mode". Then I did a google search and found Spybot S&D. on the first run, it found about 1800 viruses. On a second run on "safe mode", it found another 300. I never used Norton again.

ETFBitcoin: Crunchbang! was a rolling release, so versions were far between. If I remember correctly (I'm really bad with dates), Corenominal abandoned crunchbang! development in 2015 or so. Either way, yeah, it's been a long time. It's sorely missed. In fact, at least as far as I'm concerned, the fact it's been talked about after all these years is a clear testament to its quality.

I will try Open Mandriva now, see if it works. If  it doesn't, I guess I'm gonna have to take a look at that unofficial version...

Your guess is as good as mine... Huh

That's when I quit, rebooted and it never started again.

Lovesmayfamilis: Oh, trust me, I'm not a power user, not by a long shot. Grin I'm a rookie when it comes to Linux. I just happen to love it.
I don't know. I've been using VLC probably since 2010 or so, and I never had to install anything on it. That's the one thing I loved: it just worked.
In any case, I'm not a fan of experimenting at all. I loved crunchbang! because I installed it once and forgot about it. Then, I loved Fedora (with the caveat that I had to reinstall it every couple of years or so) for the same reason: I installed it, installed the apps I used, and copied my home directory in full to the new version, and voilá!, no fuss. That changed with F34.

77  Other / Off-topic / Re: A 90 year old luxury car now becomes useless. on: February 12, 2022, 07:04:17 PM
No mate! I did not made a story. Its a reality you can check this car yourself. I have given my complete address where this car is located. So, you can easily verify it. I liked this rusted car, so i made it into NFT's token. You checked that this rusted car is looking very beautiful. I have not forced anyone here to buy this NFT. I have just upload my art so if anyone liked my art then he will buy it.
And my main focus is that "This realize me how things change their value with time.

I didn't say you made the car, I said you made up the story.

First, you put the car next to a picture of a completely different model, and claimed it to be a make and model it clearly isn't.
Then, you keep repeating "my main focus is that "This realize me how things change their value with time." but in your post above you said:

There is no doubt, i made this thread so more peoples can see my NFT's and if anyone likes it can buy it. But this is the reality that this car is still available at near my house. I already given the address of my house. So, anyone from Pakistan can see this on this address itself.
I capture this car picture and search it on google and i find information about this car. But i get a little bit wrong information about this car. A person that found the original picture of this car.
I made this post that their is a story behind this car and it can make my NFT more valuable. I am trying to earn money from NFT's from last 6 months. But still no response. No one is buying my NFT's. I have created NFT's on different topics from last 6 months. I have still thousands of NFT's in my collection, but no one is buying. That's the reality. I am just trying my luck. I am trying continuously from last 6 months. But One day my NFT will be sold. I think i have told you everything in this post.

So how is this about things losing value over time, and not about you trying to  make money selling your NFT's?
If what you wanted was to buy the car, or somehow legally acquire it, you should've done some research to see who the legal owner is. Trust me: somebody does own that car, even if it's the government.
Otherwise, if you wanted to make people that might want to buy it aware of the car's existence, you could've published it (along with its story) on a car's forum. What's the purpose of you posting an abandoned car on a cryptocurrency forum, other than your stated purpose of selling your NFT's?

Great post, congratulations!

But there's a thing I disagree with you about: having a mentor will teach you to repeat your mentor's mistakes. Learn, and do your own research.

But, most importantly, there are 2 things I'd like to add:

1. "Never invest what you can't lose". This may sound obvious, but lots of people hit the dirt on it.

2. Above all, be patient! A couple of days ago, I made a big mistake: I had 10 bucks (the minimum amount you can trade on Binance), and was itching to start doing something, so I went ahead and traded my BTC for XRP. Really, when I was waiting for the transaction to be confirmed, XRP price started falling. The last 3 days have been hell, as it kept on falling, until now it started going up. I'm far from earning any money yet, but at least I got my 10 bucks back, so now I can go back to BTC, or change to another coin. Won't do it though, I'll wait till Monday. Cool
79  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Call for help to the forum's security experts on: February 12, 2022, 01:21:22 PM
I'm not expert, but usually it's because driver problem. Why don't you try Debian? It has great backward compatible (it's one if very few distro which still offer 32-bit version and driver for very old device). Make sure you grab non-free (as in closed source software) version.

I did.  Grin
Crunchbang! was Debian based. I went to Fedora because of Debian's stupid hypocritical policy of not accepting proprietary drivers yet not providing alternatives to them.  Fedora is the only distro (as far as I know) that accepts both free and non-free stuff.

In the meantime, I'm back to F30. Yay! Angry
I installed Solus yesterday. Had to run an update over 50 times, and was finally unable to do  it, and when I tried to boot it again, it wouldn't even start.
My advice to Solus developers (if there's one on this forum): if you're concerned about user experience, a good starting point would be to make a distro that actually works...

Rehan Zakir: so you made up a story about a pile of rust, claimed it to have been a car it clearly wasn't, just to see if you could sucker somebody into sending you money for your NFT?
I might be wrong, but that doesn't sound like the best way to promote anything, and definitely not the way to do things here. If you're in a tight spot (many of us are), I'd respectfully suggest you look for a more honest option...
