61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Canadian university buckles and pays $20k in bitcoin to hackers on: June 09, 2016, 03:46:31 PM
This yet again... Reminds me that thread with the article saying companies are stocking up on Bitcoin to pay for data rescue to attackers. If people had backups, there would be no need to fund hackers this way and they would simply stop. If companies/schools can afford to pay this amount of money to hackers and/or "stockpile" with Bitcoin, they can afford trained staff that can secure their network and keep daily backups. Hard drives are also quite inexpensive comparing to paying attackers... But it's their money, so they do whatever they want Roll Eyes It seems people prefer to be sorry than safe. Wish I had large pockets like this University Roll Eyes

Ransomware will encrypt the backups too if it can. If the backups are stored on a server or network drive they are toast. Best way is to backup using tapes, which few organizations do in the age of the cloud.

This isn't being reported by any reputable sources, nor has any real detail been provided and the initial press release has been removed. I call shenanigans.

The big problem with bots like this and changetip on reddit is that the owner can run away with all the Bitcoins at any time. They will get tempted once the balance gets really high, especially if the owner is anonymous.
64  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Canadian university buckles and pays $20k in bitcoin to hackers on: June 09, 2016, 03:40:44 PM
If you are so smart to call yourself an university teacher, one should expect that they know the importance to hire good people in the IT section that are knowledgeable on Bitcoin, ransomware, and security in general.

Honestly ramsonware only happens if you are doing idiotic stuff with the computer. If you are cautious and take basic security measures you will not get infected by ramsonware.

It only takes one person in the company or university to slip up and open an email attachment infected with ransomware. This is why ransomware is so common.

I managed to cash out 0.1BTC from primedice faucet when it was released. Though back then the faucet payout was much higher.

69  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: PokerFace ? on: June 09, 2016, 03:01:43 PM
I was wondering. In online poker you can't see anyone so there is no PokerFace like offline poker. What sort of impact does this make on poker ? Does it make it more difficult or does it make it easier ? I know for people who can't hide that online is better but what about those who are good at keeping a poker face and reading other players faces or body language ?

This question is pretty much for advanced players with at least a few months expierence.

There are still "tells" in online poker though its much harder to spot than IRL. One for example is the check boxes that let you pre-select your bet. If someone uses that then you know they made the decision to make that move without knowing what the player before them decided to do.
70  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: How to stay away from gambling? suggestions ? on: June 09, 2016, 02:59:17 PM
yes it all will not help you to stay away from gambling. but one that could help, maybe if you get a job with a high salary. because the purpose of playing gambling one of which is to earn money.

It really depends why the person is gambling. Some people gamble to earn money while others do it for the thrill or even the social aspect of it.

Did they make an official announcement about the downtime? How long will the site be down? I need to do a withdrawal.

73  Other / Meta / Re: selling Bitcointalk accounts shouldn't be allowed.. on: June 09, 2016, 12:25:42 PM
There is a huge difference between selling your personal Facebook account and farming up likes and whatnot (e.g. accounts with a few thousand "friends") and selling pages. I was referring to the first one. Do you just go out there and sell your personal FB account when you need cash? You don't.

Perhaps Facebook isn't the best example, because FB has a real name policy and also if you sold your personal FB account then your friends would obviously know it was sold and the account would not be worth much, also if it was reported there is a high chance of the account being banned and you may not want your real name associated with the account after it was sold. But people sell their personal accounts on social media websites where they primarily interact with people they don't know in real life, Twitter is a prime example.
74  Other / Meta / Re: selling Bitcointalk accounts shouldn't be allowed.. on: June 08, 2016, 10:13:39 PM
Exactly. That's a pointless argument (do people sell their e.g. 'FB accounts' when they need money? Hint: No.).

People who farm FB accounts sell them. There is a significant market for FB accounts, especially FB pages that have lots of likes.

example:

75  Other / Meta / Re: selling Bitcointalk accounts shouldn't be allowed.. on: June 08, 2016, 12:03:55 PM
How about we make it a policy that the original owner of the account is the true owner and can always claim the account back.
That way if an account is sold the buyer would have the risk of the seller claiming it back, making it too risky for people to buy accounts. I think if that policy were enacted then the amount of sold accounts would plummet. There would be no need to ban sales threads or whatever as it would simply be too risky to buy an account, much like it is too risky to buy a steam account. Those are rarely sold and when they are usually the buyer ends up out of pocket.

77  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: What do you spend your gambling winnings on ? on: June 07, 2016, 09:55:56 PM
If I ever hit it big I'm going to hodl most of it in cold storage for a few years. For small winnings I'd invest it, keep gambling it, or buy a game on steam if there was one I wanted.
78  Economy / Gambling / Re: ★Find the coin★ | multiplayer | gambling game on: June 05, 2016, 05:57:09 PM
One problem is that your game is not provably fair. The owner could pretend both players lost and bank the money, so unless you build a provably fair implementation into it the owner will have to demonstrate their trustworthiness in order to attract players.

Also I would recommend you build it as a mobile friendly web app instead, as few people will be willing to install a game like this. An advantage of that is that people could still play from a computer or non-android phone. Also you are already building the server-side stuff in PHP, so why not the client too, it will avoid some complexity.
79  Economy / Gambling / Re: Best poker website with webclient? on: June 05, 2016, 05:46:12 PM
Also check out betcoin. They have good activity during some time of the day as well. Usually its not a lot of traffic on any bitcoin poker related sites lately. Even SwC has traffic only during US day time and that too mostly on tournies.

Thanks for the suggestion. Looks good.

You will normally need a lawyer to do this for you. There are many websites that advertise these services but many of them are not so good. Do lots of research first.
