I've messed with some stuff in my iptables, now port 3333 will redirect to 3334 and in case of further attacks on 3333 I can just comment it out, restart service, and bam.
Edit: and yay, people are reconnecting. I knew it, lots of unattended miners trying to connect.

I am debating switching back to port 3333, but not sure if the attack is still ongoing, and I don't want to find out the hard way. I'm just a little upset for those that haven't reconnected yet, they may be afk or at work or otherwise unable to see that we've changed the port and I can imagine their unattended miners trying in vain to connect.. Really irks me.
Can't you make a PAT rule in the firewall and redirect to 3334 (I'm assuming the protocols can work with NAT/PAT, don't know)? That way, it it brings problems, you just have to shit the rule down, not reset everything ... P.S - check PM, please  haven't dug that far down, but I'll look into it. Thanks  |

Everything seems to be running smooth now as I believe all attacks have faded out. Unfortunately, I have been out of pocket all day and just received a voice mail from one of our guys to let me know that several OctoCoin pools were being attacked. I'm on my way to the office right now to see what we can do on our end but I believe things are under control at this point. It appears the primary issue was the nodes getting hit with an attack. We have small miners at most of the pools and the only pool that never dropped out was sfo.fusionhash.com:3338 - our miner at edric's pool and our miner pointed at sfo8.fusionhash.com:3338 (the primary FusionHash stratum server) both lost connection. We also run a private pool in our office and even that was throwing errors and dropping most shares.
Things seem to have calmed down but we will keep an eye on it. We have some fresh nodes on standby that we will post if another attack hits. Very strange timing - like edric said, it was probably just some kids screwing around. I did receive an email from FusionHash confirming that no coins were lost in the attack(s) and their database server was not affected. I want to thank edric for all of his effort - this guy continues to go the extra mile. Obviously FusionHash has been great as well but I have asked FusionHash to post status updates here from now on instead of just emailing us to help keep everybody informed. If edric hadn't been around, many people here would have been in the dark on the entire situation. Also, this is another great example of why you should always have a number of backup pools in place on your miners (personally, I usually round my backup list out with solo-mining.)
We have had a general OctoCoin news update planned for tomorrow and everything remains on schedule.

Does anyone know what happened to activity levels on this Forum. My one is frozen at the level of 70. I've also noticed that others' level is frozen too. ?!
Mine's stuck at 168. Strange. I never was much of a fan of SMF, I prefer umm... whatever the other popular one is called that I can't remember the name of right now. Anyway, my pool at http://coin.fedaykin.us is running smooth but could use more miners! Now that my few-day dev mining-spree is over the hashrates have dropped a bit! And thanks dev, that's paying the server bills for the month, pretty much. My birthday is on saturday just in case anyone wants to get me anything! Like a GPU... cough cough lol |

Ok things are back to normal-ish. It's a shame about having to change ports, I bet there's people asleep with their miners just bouncing off port 3333!

I'll do everything I can to keep it running smoothly. God I was pissed when I got home and saw 0 miners and chaos. There's gotta be a way to scrub stratum traffic, something like cloudflare, but I don't think that cloudflare works with stratum TCP traffic. I believe its very stressfull... Also, funnily enough, it doesn't take much traffic at ALL to overload stratum. I think just opening enough connection requests to fill it up does the job perfectly. I checked bandwidth graphs and I can see exactly when it started, only about .05mbps traffic though. I'm still not clear on how that disconnects already connected miners, though. Much to learn I still have.

Yeah, it looks like they were hitting nodes too. Hitting the RPC ports of anyone who was dumb enough to allow outside traffic, hitting stratum servers, but interestingly enough, they know it's pointless to DDoS web frontends, because mining goes on without it. They hit us right in the no-no spot, this is definitely a concerted effort. Probably just for fun. |

I guess nobody really knows, but it's really fucked up  The blockchain is somewhat stuck  As far as I can tell, almost all pools are either down or can't connect/ban everyone. I have temporary stopped and mining something else, but I'm not happy about it  This really sucks.. As far as I can tell, everything is working like it should, but I cannot connect with a miner. Cannot do shit. I've checked over everything. Even tweaked some security features and rebooted, reset everything. Nothing! |

Will keep our fingers crossed I hope that Cryptsy development team will notice COIN specialties which make it different from other pump & dump stuff on the crypto-coin market. This could be interesting, but it will put a lot of selling pressure on this community, diverting it from mining - not sure if it's the best corse of action Anyway, you already know that and where I stand, no need to repeat ourselves Thank you for your efforts and continuing support, vilgem - I think it's fair no say that when we get into a mainstream exchange, you're to thank for in a big way - I just wish that only happens because COIN is perceived as a good bet, not because we voted/paid/whatever for it. Coin-project, how depleted is the premine? What's its current weight on overall number of existing coins? pretty sure that will influence heavily on Cryptsy's evaluation, as well as the COIN wealth of the main miners in the community; they won't go for a coin that is too overly concentrated ... unless they get some of the action :\ Anyone can do a concentration analysis on COIN (wealth/address ?) I know it's not exactly the correct distribution (anyone can have a lot of addresses), but it's the possible one, given the anonymity and design of crypto currencies Hey man, sorry I missed you, I had to call it a night. Now the wallet is saying we're near 30m in the hole.
I'm just trying to get my mind around how it lets you send more than you had? Or do you mean that you lost a bunch of your own coins? I thought the point was that you couldn't run a negative balance? This seems fishy. Didn't think it could happen. Nothing fishy about it.. There's coins in the wallet, just not as much as the system thinks SHOULD be, so the liquid asset shows a negative. But yes, it's impossible for the wallet to have an actual negative balance. Unlike the US government!!! Oh, god, I cannot stop laughing! And hey, at least I don't hide it, and let everyone know.... unlike the government! haha We may be able to recover from this and keep our fingers crossed that there's no stuck payouts in the system. If anyone doesn't receive a payout, look for it in the blockchain, then contact me. Did I make the Energy drink come out your nose???  |

Birdcoin Dev, I need you.
Gotta have a look at the wallet, how it handles large transactions. I know the windows wallet doesn't handle large transactions well, randomly failing, I think this is the root of the problem with the pool, people cashing out with big transactions, the wallet is freezing up, processing them, but not returning TXID's and fooling my payout system. It may not even be a bug in the code but just an overload of the wallet's transaction capabilities, but someone who knows what they're doing with it needs to have a look at the code. I'm just not that good with C.
