Bitcoin’s lien problem

Part of the BitcoinMania series

http://ftalphaville.ft.com/2015/03/24/2122678/bitcoins-lien-problem/

Quote
At cryptocurrency and fintech conferences, FT Alphaville often hears Bitcoin enthusiasts make the assertion that Bitcoin is superior to fiat currency because it eliminates debt from the monetary system.

But this, of course, is a fallacy.

Bitcoin may have the potential to create a fully-funded reserve system, but it certainly doesn’t eliminate debt from any system.

At best, Bitcoin’s public ledger records a transfer of digital access rights in the eyes of the clearing network. It does not, however, record or see the terms and conditions of that transfer...

What is special about it?

Pyramid schemes always appear to do well, until they don't.

6243  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why the darkcoin/dash instamine matters on: March 24, 2015, 06:22:15 PM
Dark coins been out for months now. Why is everyone upset about an instamine now?

DARK is trying to steal the name of Dash, a Cryptonote coin with real privacy.

The reason is the Darkcoin Foundation wants to escape their poker/gambling/darkmarket past and take start marketing their HYIP to normal people.

Pushing Ponzis on Bitcoin Rich crypto-nerds for lulz and profit is one thing.  Tempting with ridiculous ROI decent folks who work hard for their money is another matter.

The latest shift for the Xpool Multipool paid out over 14+ DRK, 88+ BTCD, 136+ FIBRE, 252+ BITS & 0.262+ BTC.

Welcome Bitstar coin as a new coin for payouts.

Any problems, please PM or post to the Xpool thread linked in my forums sig as I may miss your post.

Cheers!

www.xpool.ca

OK, that's enough pool spam.

Please keep such posts confined to your pool's thread, and out of the various coins' threads.

You don't see Slush spamming Bitcoin threads with the latest stats from his pool, do you?

Icebreaker, I understand your ire for mining pool spam, but in this case it is completely warranted.

Crackfoo runs the official BTCD multi-pool so him posting daily stats for a bit of exposure is a non-issue.

I didn't make the rules:

Advertising spam is not allowed, this includes mining pools

Mining pool ops should make a thread within the Mining section of Alt Currencies.

advertising your pool is unnecessary and leads to too much spam.

I'm just asking you both to respect them.  Why is that so hard?

Don't worry my dear, DARSH will just as successful as your precious Aurora was.   Wink

let's understand the role of the core team. This is not our own pet coin. We didn't create it and don't misrepresent is as such. We are the essentially the board of directors of the project, supervising the ongoing development and maintenance as a community-focused open source project. Our primary role is to set the direction for the project, decide on priorities, etc.

We do some of the coding work ourselves, but much of that is done by community contributors (you are welcome to contribute for example) and occasionally paid freelancers under our direction. We also all provide direct financial support to the project to pay for cryptographers/academics professional fees, hosting, said freelancers, etc.

Personally, in addition to the my role on the core team as described above, I do a lot of testing and debugging (not only core code but I've also helped debug some pool issues and close some exploits), design and analysis, and a huge amount of community support (answering questions, such as yours, etc.).

IOW, Monero is a distributed leaderless bottom-up effort with no absolute 'central command.'

This is hard for the DARSHers to understand, because their coin brand's parade of coin-like offerings is a top-down effort created by an incorporated foundation consisting of the requisite Money Guy, Tech Dude, and Shady Lawyer.

I was aiming for ~3000 masternodes by mid 2016 based on an return-on-investment bond model. The masternode networks fundamentals are pretty similar to that of the bond market, ROI being comparable to expected interest rates. Currently the expected interest rate of the network appears to be about 16%, as our fundamentals strengthen I would expect that expected rate to actually fall allowing more masternodes onto the network (if people feel less risk in having a masternode, they'll accept less return).

I obviously think you understand the difference but I will answer only once for lurkers. In the case of Masternodes you don't pay anyone, like when you buy a bond where you loose control of your money and you no longer have it available for spending.  You actually just keep your own coins as a collateral to avoid Sybil attacks on the network. The coins never leave the ownership of the person and are never paid to anyone. You can always just sell them.

The payments Masternodes receive are received from the services they provide to the network. It is called Proof of Service, they continually proof the servers are online, with their ports open and providing said services, like instant transactions, privacy etc. These services are available to end users and they benefit from them. Providing those services, masternode operators have costs and earn a fee for the services rendered, exactly like miners.

I am sure you already understand all of this, so this is not intended as a response to you, but maybe it can be beneficial to others.

Thanks for the response.

But you are wrong.  You do pay someone for a Masternode.

Specifically, you pay The Darkcoin Foundation to buy their insta-mined coins.

1000 minimum.

And there is no use for the coins except for making more Masternodes.

Mary Kay, Herbalife and Amway may be a pyramid schemes, but the fact they provide actual products makes them (sort-of-mostly) legit in the eyes of the law.

Masternodes don't distribute make-up, diet pills, or soap; they just claim to create suspiciously high ROI based on nothing other than new participants joining the pyramid.

Anyone else get the feeling we are getting pumped? Everytime there are a few sells someone buys a small amount which makes the chart go north. I mean nobody buys when people are selling. You put the buy orders, not swipe the sell orders.

I don't feel a pump, only pure organic demand driven by DASH's technological superiority, astute rebranding, and the soundness of The Foundation's 100% completely legal high-yield Masternode investment product.  Who can argue with such an incredible potential ROI?

If you truly support DASH, you need to ask your family and friends for loans to buy more, right now.  Make sure they get some too.

Also talk to people at work and convince the customers to buy into this once-in-a-lifetime DASH opportunity.  They will be so grateful when you make them rich!

If you can't get loans to buy DASH, try selling some stuff you don't use everyday.  Pawn that useless jewelry and the antique furniture that just gathers dust.  You can always get it back with future gains.

Cash out your IRA and mortgage the house.  The tax penalty is nothing compared to the ROI on a Masternode!

If you don't act now, somebody else will get the cheap coins and you'll have to panic buy at a higher price.  The smartest thing to do is go all in, immediately!

Ted cruz and rand paul should stop bashing eachother, they are both great president material and only making eachother look worse hurting their chances of a republican winning the election. Those 2 look very good and both have some very good ideas.

Cruz and Paul together did great work on the drone issue.

But Cruz is too rigid on things like Cuba.  He gives off a bit of Fundy 'do what I say or I'll hurt you' bully vibe, and looks like an derpy jingoistic idiot advocating continuation of an isolationist Cold War policy that has backfired for 50 years.

As a fellow accomplished policy debater, I know he knows better.  So the disingenuousness of such posturing and pandering is a turn-off to my 'principled libertarian' side.

I'm also sick of Ivy League lawyers running everything.  Washington needs a doctor with experience in private enterprise, not another shyster from the ABA.

But I'm not worried; Cruz has, in accordance with the Peter Principle, reached his level of incompetence in the Senate.  If Perry doesn't crush him, Jeb will.  And at the very moment he announced, Cruz witnessed firsthand the incomparable ground game of Rand's shock troops.   Cool
6256  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 24, 2015, 03:08:06 PM
monero is currently the number one PROVABLY anon coin. I'm just scared of zerocash...

Fixed^.   Smiley

Don't fret about 0cash, it's still vaporware and involves substantial trade-offs of its own.

CryptoNote tech & whitepaper came out of nowhere. Maybe next months someone with a strange pseudonym will release an even better whitepaper.

Have a better whitepaper and implementation only goes so far.  Arguably inferior products win in their sectors all the time (cough, Windows, cough).

A real Monero-killer would have to be so much better that it overcomes our 1st mover and large network effect advantages.

Possible, but not likely, because XMR already does exactly what it says on the box, which is good enough to satisfy the anon market.

XMR is a moving target for competition because it's constantly improving and the ecosystem is blossoming, making it even harder to leapfrog.   Cool

The line was crossed when the Monero developers started throwing serious mud around.  Actually, if I were Evan I would have got a lawyer involved. Being actually called a scammer is seriously full of libel.

I really hope that Darkcoin abandons its broken architecture and ideas sooner rather than later, not for their sake, but for ours...because their failure is harmful to all of us.

Great post on Reddit.  The True Believers will attack your for 'attacking' their Cargo Cult of Personality, but if it saves some poor slobs from being suckered in it's worth the trouble.

I disagree DashcoinDark's (inevitable) doom is harmful to the rest of us.  Bitcoin and Monero are anti-fragile.  The epic LOOOLs provided by the flailing and failings of DARSH only make us stronger and more entertained.
6259  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Darkcoin --> DASH, some unanswered questions on: March 23, 2015, 08:52:47 PM
iCEBREAKER i'm laughing of your signature

I already considered several times to buy darkcoin, but all the controversy are keeping me away from it... i didnt realise that alrady exist one coin with the name Dashcoin, its not ethical at all, and tell alot about the dev.. all the links you have on your signature are the reason because i am still away from it, even knowing that i could have 20x the value of the investment that i think in made back then i think i will just keep away... i believe that the main reason for the price beeing so high is the greed for masternodes alone, but everything else just dont fit in my personality

Thanks, glad I could help!   Cool

The slippery slope of the DRK DASH INSTAMINE SCAM!!!!!!!!

They can't handle truth.

These cultists would rather change the subject to off-topic coins and gossip than discuss the instamine and the questionable legality of their HYIP.
