641  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 4 x 6870's Which Psu? on: August 28, 2011, 09:26:50 PM
I have yet to see a quality psu that comes with enough PCIE connectots, its annnoying.

Unfortunately I can't get you hard numbers on a 6870 as my current set up with one won't allow me to underclock the mem, however 150 - 175W from the wall is probably a reasonable estimate, unless you go really crazy with overclocking, so 175*4 = 700W probable max draw from the wall. A 750Watt PSU would be a very safe buy for a normal system (dont go supwe oc'ong a high end cpu though), you could probably get away with a 650Watt PSU, but most people seem very skittish of taxing their PSUs for some reason, go figure.

The COrsair AX750 is probably the best PSU out there, but also probably overkill for your needs, but if you want the best, that's something to look at. The FSP Aurum gold 700W is a decent PSU and should be able to handle your needs while giving you Gold Efficiency at a decent sticker value. LEPA G700-MA is also in the decent category, and it's cheap with a MIR right now from the egg. Thermaltake Toughpower Grand GOld 750 also good and going for cheap.

Those are just some of what's out there, but they're all quality units with good warranties in case you get the rare defective unit and they're not bank breaking (I recommend gold rated PSUs for anyone running a 24/7 high load rig, as it will actually pay off the price difference in a reasonable period of time).
642  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin is a closed system on: August 28, 2011, 09:20:28 AM
I like 3phases analysis, but not his conclusion. 21,000 bitcoins worth of solidcoins were not dumped all at once (that's roughly 840,000 solidcoins at near to the highest price they ever traded for). Considering the drops were more or less single time mass sells, it's more likely a small combo of some solid/i0/ix coin cashouts, and more largely an early bitcoin adopter or hacked account dropping a buttload of coinage on to the market.

That aside, listen to 3phase, if you look hard enough you can find a boogeyman anywhere, doesn't mean you should be afraid of him though.

Alright, I'm in for 5GHash, we'll see how it goes

Re: solidcoins, I'm making hundreds of dollars in solid coins.

Hundreds of dollars? That seems a bit hard to believe. You have what, 4 or 5 GH/s?  You've said several times you're limited by electricity.
I assume that's not "per day" -- what are we talking about, 200% over normal BTC mining? 500%?

If it's very much, it can't last long or everyone'll be doing it.

"Solidcoin" is just another scam. And in exchange for the possible 300% mining returns, you have a chance of getting 30% of what you would have made mining BTC.

Yeah I'm chillin on 5GHash/sec, but SC has difficulty raising limitations, meaning even that hash power yielded significant coinage for long time (even now though it is petering out) and the price went up about 30x in a few days, contributing to out of the ordinary gains, not to mention investment in the coin yielded high returns. Now that BTC took a dump in the toilet though it's not "hundreds of dollars" "per day" or every couple of days, since the exchange is to BTC, but that's ok, I have faith in the bit to come back eventually.

SC hash rate went up and exchange rate has gone down, so whether it has "bucked the trend" or not remains to be seen.

Good luck east coasters, I wonder if these machines will become less popular in malls now though

Fair enough, I did say I could be wrong, and lo but I was. So I decree things have been officially spiced up on the forums. Good on you for your entrepreneurialism and support for the coin, especially as I feel this type of material is what is needed to boost any new technology off the ground, whatever your views on that specifically are.

Somehow the only other 5970 seller just happens to be in CA... curse you sales tax!

Why the negativity on an enterprising merchant who is actually using these cryptographic currencies?
Low entry-barrier is one of the key advantages of a system like bitcoin.

We should be encouraging services like this. Good on you Lorna.

The last part of your message is absodefinatively true.  However, the reason for the negativity is that those of us who have worked in the production-side of that industry have fought an uphill battle to "clean up" the image of adult sites.  If she's trying to create a positive user experience, popup circle jerks are NOT the way to achieve this.  I've built sites which have had 3000+ recurring members without using a single popup, popunder, toolbar installer, or any malicious and/or annoying obstacles that would cause a surfer to Alt+F4 the site.  And while I hold nothing against her personally, her site design leaves me with a twitchy eye.

Wait...you are hot and blond and in the porn industry? You should probably set up as Lorna's competition.

I laugh because the wording made me think the same thing. I think by "production side" she doesn't mean "making nudie porno" but rather "crafting web pages" however. Shame, a porn star runnin around the bitcoin forums would spice things up a bit. I'm assuming lorna isn't lorna, but I could be wrong there too.
651  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: SLC passes NMC on: August 26, 2011, 05:59:40 PM
Could not, even if I want, the 3 letter code is a standard for exchanges. I don't know where coinHunter came up with his 2 letter code idea, but would crash most of forex programs made to split currency pairs (EURUSD, AUDCAD, GBPYEN.... etc), if solidcoin ever make that far.

Well I can tell you what most people are using, by not using the standard you create the possibility to confuse. Either way it's just a small thing, perhaps forex will give SolidCoin an exemption?

It's not small if all major software is programmed to parse all data input in a specific format. More likely that forex would ignore solidcoin than revamp all its systems to accomodate it.
652  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: SolidCoin assisting the drop in BTC value this week? on: August 26, 2011, 05:51:38 PM
What? I'm not following your tenuous connection.

8 days ago BTC was at roughly 10.75 vs fiat, then it rallied to around 11.25 6-7 days ago where it held for 3-4 days. Then a huge cliff to 10.75 stable for 2 more days then another huge cliff today all the way down to 9. Correlation is not causation, and unless there are related solidcoin events on those time periods of jumps, I don't even really see correlation.
653  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: I finally understand... on: August 26, 2011, 04:40:53 AM
Probably it's more that most people don't make it to hero before growing bored and wandering off than heroes don't want to talk to anyone.

Myself though, I do fall somewhat into the OPs description. I used to have a lot of fun discussing stuff, but over time the same things being repeated over and over have driven me to have less interest in reading/responding. Not that it matters, my opinion won't make or break the forum.
654  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: HD5970 new in stock newegg 499$ ! on: August 25, 2011, 06:31:00 PM
Damn I was just considering swapping out some of my existing cards for one of these, as I've wanted one for a while, but so it goes. NewEgg rapes me with tax anyway  Angry
655  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: HD5970 new in stock newegg 499$ ! on: August 25, 2011, 08:44:40 AM
Wow, where in the world did they get these? Crazy.

This is by far the best high density buy you can find. I wish I wasn't electrically capped or I'd be all over this like white on rice, or something. EBay isn't a great idea though, what with the giant sell fees and all. You'd need to sell for around $600 to break even, which may or may not happen.
656  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: The Loch Ness Miner Appears Again! on: August 24, 2011, 01:36:37 AM
Ha! Lovin the pics.

This forum cracks me up in other ways too. When there's a tiny blip in hash power due to variance theres usually like 3 threads "ZOMG FPGAS CAME TO LIFE AND ARE HACKING BITCOIN", but when there's actually a sustained > 24hour large rise in hash power (we're at 7.4 blocks / hr currently) no one says a thing.
I think a lot of the people who panic easily have left(which caused the drop) and people are slowly acquiring their used hardware. The reason I say this is I've noticed a big drop in the amount of topics lately/amount of replies. Plus a lot of full rigs have been selling in the goods section the last two weeks.

To be honest I was pleasantly surprised when we had a decrease in difficulty but its probably back to business as usual. I expect to see 5-10% increases coming up which still isn't too bad compared to the 50% increases seen in June.

That's a fair hypothesis, the gold rush media blitz brought lots of wide eyed optimists with little knowledge seeking fortune for free, as the feeding frenzy died down the follow-behinds probably wanted to get out with their tails between their legs. I wish I wasn't electrically capped or I would have happily acquired their departing carcasses. Curse you other long haulers, keeping my difficulty all high and junk.
657  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mt Gox Live BTC graph looking strange on: August 23, 2011, 07:18:37 PM
I've never looked at the mtgox live whatever before (I assume its new) so I don't know quite how to interpert this, but from my experience with the depth of market, I think it's not totally out of norm, there are often huge buy walls and sell walls, though I guess the buys are indeed looking healthier than the sells. My feeling is that there has been a few big coiners dumping lately supressing the prices while getting out and getting $$ for themselves, and now that most of their coin is spent (or at least the portion they wanted to cash out) the market is adjusting back up like you say.

Looking good indeed, but I know for sure how quickly that all can change.
658  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 650w 52a single rail PSU to run 3 GPUs? on: August 23, 2011, 03:53:00 PM
Just so you know the GX 650 is a very low quality PSU, coolermaster is a mix of good and crap, it's not a coincidence that it's way cheaper than other 650W PSUs. 5830s are the next most intensive consumer of electricity after the 5870, and I'm not saying they won't run on that PSU, but I wouldn't use it myself. It might not explode immediately, it might not explode ever, but there's a reason why people spend more on what is arguably the most important single part in a computer (especially one running hot 24/7).

The raw answer to your question though is yes, 650Watts will run 3 GPUs assuming a small enough system and little to no overclock on 5830s or below.

660  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: FPGA boards are here on: August 23, 2011, 03:23:58 PM
To be fair you would be a very high volume customer to be spending 60g and I think you would get a reduced unit price.
I have some 300w Tt heatpipe fanless PSU's that would be prefect for this and they don't need a motherboard, cpu, RAM so you are saving money there. They could also be used to help keep alternate blockchains ticking over and for people in countries with high electricity costs. I will be looking into ordering one soon.

You can the  also consider that the rate of inflation in fiat money is only getting faster and that few lousy grand you dropped on some FPGAs is nothing will be quickly forgotten and you will break even before you know it.

I guess I shouldn't have used such big numbers, was just easier for me to calculate, but the break even point remains the same regardless of the size of your order unless you get a volume discount (which means a smaller order is in fact less efficient and slower to pay off), "before you know it" remains roughly 3 years, assuming difficulty stays sub-2mil (which it wouldn't if suddenly people got it in their heads that fpgas are some awesome way to beat the system) and the price of bitcoins remains the same. On the one hand it's true that the price could be much higher a year or two from now, but it could also be worth jack squat, and an FPGA board designed to mine bitcoins would then have a resale value of roughly nil, unlike traditional GPU-rigs which are still useful gaming devices and can be resold as such.

Until mining becomes much closer to the cost of electricity there is little incentive for people to drop on fpgas, especially those built by others. In my humble opinion of course.
