Thats why POW coins are not sustainable.
NXT has a real future once the jolly things get distributed, since no expensive mining farms are required.
There is not enough room for all these altcoins,  there is only enough room for 5 or 6 coins max i reckon.
Most of these coins will be dead in 12 months, the hard thing is trying to predict what ones will be successfull.

I can't find a way for anything you said here to be valid. Please convince me.

I know a lot of people have stated in many articles that they believe only 5 or 6 coins will ultimately survive.  But the more I think about it, the more I can see many  more coins finding a nitch if more of the population start to use them.  It will be interesting to see where we are 10, 15, 20 years from now.  The press is printing gloom and doom again.  It's so silly, people obviously don't truly understand the value crypto coins bring to the market.  But of course time will tell!

Just want to say one more time, in case I missed saying it, I'm super sad lotterymining pool is closing.  Cry  I've enjoyed being there, I even won a lottery.  If any pool were going to be here forever, I honestly thought lotterymining would have been it.  I'll be mining there until April 22, then I may retire my computers from mining and start gaming again  Cheesy

I hope you, CHAOSiTEC and your wife will soon be able to buy that house, and that you fill it with little ones Smiley  And I especially hope you'll still come talk to us here.  I'm glad the dice game and wheel of fortune, etc... are still going to be run by you, that means you're still invested in us Cheesy  Thanks for all you've done for us, you really were responsible for a lot of the good vibes we have here in this thread!

Oh BTW, Evan must have updated the beta 5 wallet, because it did finally sync  Cheesy

Did Evan ever update DGW2 in the beta wallet?  I just downloaded it again, but still can't sync.  Maybe it hasn't happened yet??
664  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 04, 2014, 12:53:19 AM
Why the hell aren't people mining att lottery-mining? They are shutting down now because lack of users.

1% fee, with a fun lottery AND support for the community.

It's a scam pool.

and you still refuse to show any proof...

and i still think your the one that used the diff 0 hack... and since you dont think you need to show proof of anything, neither do i have to proof anything!

could someone please calculate how many blocks i would have to "steal" to get aprox 18000 coins that i have given away back.. why the hell would i give so many coins away, and then start stealing blocks as you keep saying.....!!

besides, chaeplin has shown you proof of no unaccounted blocks... anyone can go through ALL the blocks and see there is nothing hidden, no blocks missing

What, you're the guy who was scamming all of us who were mining at Lottery pool by submitting 0 diff hashes by  the butt load, taking a percentage of everyone's share, contributing nothing, and your angry because CHAOSiTEC, bless him, found out before you could withdraw?  LOL.

And you accuse CHAOSiTEC, one of the biggest Darkcoin supporters ever, of running a scam pool?

You've got some nerve buddy!

Well, we've been without internet all day, finally realized it was the modem.  Just got it replaced, and here I am again, LOL.

anyway, hope nothing but good news out there today?  Gotta go read!  LOL

Hello world!

What about "Brights" for the lowest DRK denomination?

I like the idea of playing against the dark theme.

Just my 2 Brights.

Evans?

I don't think "duffs" can be beat.

I totally agree, The Simpsons are a classic.  Would you believe I remember when they first started out on the Tracy Ullman show?  LOL  It pays homage to that and of course Mr. Duffield Smiley

Basic answer to your question is yes, we do have a fake test network.  It is called testnet.  We test DarkSend on it before it goes live.

Next time, maybe you can join us if you are available.

Hope that's better!
668  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 03, 2014, 05:39:18 AM
Why dont creat a test (fake) darkcoin network for test Dark Send. ?
DSK

with it, we can play with dark send and master node.

Just need some CPU and some p2pool multi coin (DRK/DSK)

In that way, DRK dont became the laboratory for other coins, but DSK is the laboratory of DRK  Grin

We do do that all the time Smiley  When it's stable enough, we have a beta version that can be used along side the regular version.  This allows people to do transactions with DarkSend, and not have to wait.  Like me, I don't want to send regular, I want my privacy.  So even so DarkSend is being improved upon and even completely reworked, we still have a very good version that we can use while waiting for the next version Smiley

But it's not for people that haven't read about the issues (mainly that you have to wait until your payment goes through before you can turn off your computer or close your wallet, otherwise you'll be fined 0.1 dark.  And also, if you don't like using something that hasn't been open sourced yet, it wouldn't be for you.  It's closed until completed.

But yes, everyone is always welcome to join in on testnet when we're testing.  I have a ball giving out large sums of dark to people, something I can't do irl, LOL

Just dumped my entire BTC reserve and bought more DRK.

Like a goddamn tycoon.

If it all goes tits up I'm going to have to work for a couple of days to make up for it.

I think you are a trend setter.

Yah, we may all have to work, including those of us in retirement,, LOL

back to a master node misbehaving, there is a problem here.

A human will not know if they are hosting a master node as they shut off their machine for whatever reason, therefore we have a backup slave node to take over.  I would think that the only "punishment" for the master node is that they will not participate in that round's rewards.  Otherwise, we can hurt people who are just running their wallets.

I still haven't seen, but may have missed it, can we password protect our wallet while running the nodes?  Also, can our balances and identity be inferred from running a node?
671  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 02, 2014, 08:20:57 PM

- windows ok? Yes
- does it have to be guaranteed to run 24/7 or can it be a desktop computer that's on 2 hours a day? 24/7 is required, otherwise you'll get the percentage your computer is on.
- public ip? port 9999 will need to be open
- static ip? doesn't matter
- is the ip compiled into the wallet? no, it's discovered
- possible to run multiple nodes on the same computer? each 1000DRK would be entered as a "ticket" for the election, so one daemon is fine.

Clearer, Evan, please.  You lost me.  you say 24/7 is required but then say you'll get percentage your computer is on.  Did you mean to say it's not required to run 24/7, but anything less would give out a proportionately smaller chance of reward?

Are you also saying that several wallets can be run from the same IP address?  As long as there is 1000 dark in each one?  Wallet being a node?

Finally, can we run our wallets with the passphrase on?

It almost seems like this could be a version of proof of stake?

672  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 02, 2014, 03:22:04 PM
I am a little confused at this point. I don't know what I missed. Could somebody give me a raw explanation? Because, I see:
- an interesting coin concept (it came with a unique anti-ASIC hashing algo, new diff retarget algo, and here is the DarkSend beta, etc)
- an active developer
- an active bitcointalk forum community (several hundreds of pages / months)
- DRK trading pairs on several big exchanges

I don't know, I'm mining because I'm lazy and I don't know what else to mine.  But I'm stupid, not everyone can be stupid like me?  LOL, so who knows?

Also, maybe your settings are not quite right?  Lowering the intensity sometimes increases actual hash rate, you  might want to try that?
673  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 02, 2014, 03:13:12 PM
...cut...
It doesn't need to be NSA-proof from day one (don't even know if that's even possible with their resources) but a plan with gradual introduction of further layers and features could work. But since we've not reached final deployment, it's good that ideas are thrown around so that it can be the best it can get in the core functionality without having to rewrite the main code to something different. ...cut...

Two of the biggest problems Darkcoin faces right now are:

1.  We need to get a working DarkSend completed.
2.  The more layers we stack on DarkSend, the bulkier the blockchain.

Finally, it is impossible to make it 100% anonymous.  What you do is increase the improbability that anything can be traced basically due to the cost involved.

Besides, DarkSend doesn't have to be "Completed" it can evolve, with people being able to use it as it does evolve.  In fact, that's probably the healthiest way for the development of the coin to go.  Trying to make things so complex, with such a reduction in rewards (0.000001% more anonymity) invites bugs that will be super hard to detect.  Lets build on a great foundation.  I think it's the wisest approach.

My client is not connecting to any nodes, anyone got a conf file example I could copy?

use at your own risk, i logged these darkcoi nnodes while connected to my server node
http://pastebin.com/qmn8xF2s

Thanks, what do you mean use at your own risk though?

Well, because it's beta software and there could be problems with it.  I haven't found any actual bugs, but one thing to watch out for, and this will be made better in future versions, is that when making a darksend payment, and this is the default in the beta wallet, you don't really get feedback on your transaction, not until it has been completed.  So if it's stuck waiting for people to conjoin with, you can't see anything.  So if you close your wallet, turn off your computer, etc... , you will be charged 0.1 drk for misbehaving.  Note, normally Evan has a wallet constantly darksending amounts to himself to help push darksends along, but what happened to me is that he didn't notice it had stopped, and I didn't realize I had open transactions to myself, and gave up, closed my computer and thought there was a bug.  But the 0.1 charge I noticed later showed that I had left a transaction before it completed.  In the future, Evan is going to put updates on the transaction so we get feed back.

But that's why this is beta, to see what needs to be done to make it work better, and that's why it's at your own risk Smiley

Oh gosh, I just finished my dinner wine, and I'm a total lightweight.  I thought you were asking about the beta wallet, not the nodes, LOL
675  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 02, 2014, 06:37:32 AM
Ok, so I have darkcoind in my Ubuntu, I started it , it seems ok, but I can't see any feed back.  If I try to start it again, it can't get a lock on the .darkcoin directory so it must be running.  I can't stop it either.  ./darkcoin stop or -stop or --stop doesn't work, says
error: incorrect rpcuser or rpcpassword (authorization failed)

so I try one of those with
./darkcoind stop -rpcuser=name -rpcpassword=pass

I try this with help -help --help as well, but it doesn't do anything.  I also can't getinfo

Can anyone help me?  I'm leaving it for the night, maybe it's downloading the blockchain and can't be disturbed?  I'll see how it is in the morning Smiley

Thanks for any help

p.s. I can't find a good readme on this either, no info, so maybe I'm just not finding it?

It will take a few mins to download the block chain.

for help, this will list all available command:
./darkcoind help

This will show you mining info:
./darkcoind getmininginfo

If you need to kill darkcoind:
killall darkcoind

Thank you so much, I did the killall, and then restarted and this time I got the "darkcoind server starting" which I didn't get the first time, so I'm gonna let that sync now and see how it goes, LOL.  Thank you again!

My client is not connecting to any nodes, anyone got a conf file example I could copy?

Had the same problem, it took like an hour + to connect to a node but it's all good now.  I just left it alone.

Both seed nodes were down, I forget to check them. Anyone else want to host a seed node?

- It needs to be configured to 200 connections max
- Must have 9999 open from the outside
- Must be a static IP
- Must be permanently available

PM me and I'll add them to the source

Would it be of any help to use an amazon tiny ec2?  Only 1 cpu, but if it's just to run info through?  Let me know!

I have one running on a micro.

All I do is run darkcoind?  then give you all the ip?

It's like being an observer of some momentous historical event. Or it will be when Anonymint posts, "Huh. OK then."

LOL, don't hold your breath, it'll never happen, LOL

Mine something more profitable and buy dark with it???

WTF is going on here I go to Mexico for a week and...AnonyMint is helping.  Huh

Shit let's just solve the Israel/Palestine problem, we seem to be on a roll here.

LOL, very good!  eduffield obviously has the patience of a saint

Why not Pow and PoS, where PoS is tied to fees earned from serving the nework?

ASIC for bitcoin is an arms race because people are spending cash on hardware trying to make as much as possible. Why not have a similar system for nodes? Create an arms race for being honest nodes and deploying as many as possible to fend off or diminish attacks?

I have no idea how this could be done, but it's an amazing idea!  Fits in with my capitalistic sensibilities.
