Here's the messages that I exchanged with the seller:
Me: Hi I might be interested in buying one or two Casascius coins that you are selling. Do you still have any of the 5 BTC rounds? Also, would you consider using escrow for the purchase. Thanks.
Woodstock: Hey, Yes I have some 5 BTC coins left, sorry I cannot use Escrow not because I do not want to use it b ut the reason I am selling the coins is because I need them for a purchase I need to make on Sunday if I cannot raise the BTC I will just open the coins. If you do not wish to do the transaction without Escrow I understand, if you do feel comfortable let me know and we can come to an arrangement before I open the coins.
Me: Hmm, sorry but I don't think I can risk it without escrow. Its a shame, even though most people here are trustworthy there are a few who ruin it for everyone else. The only way to stay safe is to adopt a policy of never trusting anyone. Hope you are able to sell some of them, it seems a shame for them to be opened... If you have any remaining afterwards which you still want to sell, I'd still be interested. Cheers
Woodstock: I understand, I will not be selling any then because what I do not sell I will open. It is a shame but since they have 5 BTC inside it is not worth the hassle of Escrow and time is more important to me than waiting for an extra .1 BTC. If you change your mind let me know otherwise I will be opening them in about 18 hours. I do understand your reasoning behind Escrow - if it were something else and I did not need the coins so quick I would use it.
Me: Where are you shipping from, I forgot to ask?
Woodstock USA - should only take a few days if you are also from USA/Canada or worldwide about a week or two. Depending on the amount I could use express but again I understand if you do not wish to risk it without Escrow - I am the same and probably would want to use Escrow as well it is just the circumstances and the fact I need the coins today and cannot wait on Escrow releasing
Me: I'm glad you can appreciate where I'm coming from, its not that I'm accusing you of anything. Unfortunately I just can't afford to lose 5 BTC at the moment. I will, however, buy one of the single bitcoins if you have any left?
Woodstock: I can sell you one yes someone who said they wanted one still has not paid and I need the coins by today so please send 1.25 BTC to 13ubKX3YLmZ543PwAqxoemMsn5mUknrBnD and your address and I will post it tomorrow.
So I took a punt, although quite honestly I knew it was a bad idea. I hope this highlights the importance of always using escrow for a trade like this.

I think it is brilliant. WU have offices all over the world. All they need to do is to exchange bitcoin for fiat and vice versa.
So if someone in California wants to send money to a relative in Indonesia, he goes to WU and buys bitcoins (or he buys them from wherever since he lives in California). He then sends them to his relative in Indonesia who in turn sells them for local fiat at WU. So all WU does is guarantee liquidity all over the globe. Of course they can also help out with creating wallets for people in rural areas without computers/mobile phones/internet.
If Western Union would start doing this they will guarantee their survival and help the Bitcoin community and the world!
Now this would be a great idea, something I hadn't even considered.

I sold at 130, with a limit to buy back at 110. Then I pussied out and bought back in at 125...

Would justification would they give to ban bitcoins in the mature and democratic countries?
Money Laundring? Well then ban banks as well because billions are laundered through them. Remember all those articles about how the biggest provider of liquidity in 2008 was the mafia?
Drugs? etc, Ban cash too then.
Moreover, if they tried baning bitcoins it would be seen as an unreasonable, even unacceptable, restriction of freedom by everyone from journalists to all sorts of think tanks and economists. Many would convincingly argue that it would hurt the economy etc.
So it is never going to happen.
If it does, then bitcoins would go underground. It would probably still be used to buy drugs but also for more seriously criminal stuff. It is after all a very fast, anonymous, safe, way to transfer wealth. So I think the price would crash as the news comes through, but then it would slowly recover as many people simply ignore the law as with copyrighted sharing, start selling it in a one to many platform rather than many to many as in exchanges. Then, as it would become harder to get because many want it, especially the black market, the price would go up and up to the point where honest people might even be willing to risk prison to have one.
And that would be the best argument in my opinion against making it illegal. First, it would hurt the economy quite badly as innovation is being stopped, thus the economy would not become more efficient. Secondly, it would take the benefits of this innovation and efficiency away from honest hard working people and drive it underground, because it certainly is not going to make it vanish.
For those reasons, I do not think the government can or will ban bitcoins or overtly interfere with its development.
I agree with every sentence except the last one. I think the best thing for governments to do would be to accept Bitcoin and even encourage its growth. But I also think governments have a track record of not making sensible decisions.

Haha wow, thanks very much! For what its worth, I promise I didn't cheat or try to manipulate price at all. I really want to know if Theymos did buy up the price... not because I feel that would be unfair, but just because it would be quite an amazing guess if not.
|
|
|
To be fair, if he did do that it wasn't against the rules, so technically it wasn't cheating
|
|
|
Theymos, did you buy it up to your price just to win? lol
|
|
|
I think 100 exactly was actually reasonably likely; as a psychological level - I had my doubts it would actually make it, but figured it had a good chance of bouncing off if it did.

Ah just checked the timing of your post, so game finishes in a few hours... dammit.

Assuming it doesn't jump higher by tonight, looks like Tirapon might have it aughhh i know!!!! damn it!.......er i mean hoooorraaayyy for Tirapon! hahaha wow!!!! Wait what happened... did I win? I'm seeing 101.12 on bitcoinity.org which makes me suspicious, that's exactly what Theymos guessed.

Just completed a trade, all went well.

100.00 < will this get me a whole bitcoin?

|

I already bought as many as I could at $15. Hoping it goes low enough to feel justified in buying more.

I'm prepared for it to get worse before it gets better...

Fail. 1) OP claims to be smart, yet can't find the 'Meta' sub-forum. 2) S/he's basically whining "I'm bored! Say something smart. I demand to be entertained!"
If you want better quality discussions, then use the search function and 'necro' a topic of your choice that you think has merit, or start a thread that's actually meaningful...
In OP's defence, I think the idea might not be so bad. There's a lot to sift through to find good quality posts, and although I think the ignore button is a good concept, I find myself reluctant to use it because occasionally the trolls have something relevant to say. Perhaps invite only would be a bit unfair, as I think that quality posts should be accessible to everyone. But I think the suggestion of an 'enlightened members' type section could work quite well. A place for quality discussion amongst those who have been here long enough to gain a real understanding of the bitcoin world, available for all to view. But yeah this topic should be in Meta.
