I wonder what news headlines we'll see next? Barter is better option than Bitcoin for Lebanese? Bitcoin is useless on Lebanon?

  • ECONOMIC COLLAPSE: OUR NEW POLL SHOWS EATING NEIGHBORS CURES HUNGER FASTER THAN BITCOIN
  • SHOCK LATEST: FIRETORCH KEEPS WOLVES FROM DOOR BETTER THAN CRYPTOCOINS
  • SCIENTISTS SAY BUCKETS HOLD MORE RAIN WATER THAN BITCOIN DOES

For a moment I thought I made a boo-boo but it seems that the so-called black rate is between 1580 and 1600 so although indeed a bit devalued it 's nothing that would be regarded as collapsed Venezuela style.
And browsing through the news it seems that they are committed to trying to keep this rate, although I'm not so sure it's the best idea.

well, what can the Lebanese treasury ministry/central bank possibly do to maintain a manipulated official rate in a barely functional controlled market if the free-market rate is falling in a functioning free-market? It's never been possible to control anywhere else this has happened, and so I agree with you, they would be wiser to abandon the peg in the calmest possible way
723  Other / Off-topic / [2019-10-31] Why 'Shitcoin minimalists are like ______" according to Mr. Nobody on: October 31, 2019, 01:06:02 PM
Not sure what to make of this story. Has anyone heard of this person before? Seems a bit self-important for a person that's done pretty much nothing except sit around exhaling bad breath with some apparent words mixed in Cheesy

In exciting new news, new to Bitcoin, a brand-new complete nobody has newly announced that their new meaningless opinion is the same thing as what he said 2 seconds earlier.

Dubbed "Bitcoin's Invisible Man" (so-called because of their publicity-shy transparency), Mr. Nobody tweeted every minute of the day last week in the most objective way yet:

Quote from: Mr Nobody
I am not the most important person in Bitcoin, and I don't know anything about it. I haven't got anything important to say, and you should all join my Bitcoin website and club

Mr. Nobody went on to explain that God had recently told him the truth about everything, ever:

Quote from: Mr Nobody
Everybody likes me, and if you don't, it's just because you are a HATER. You are basically ADOLF BITLER!!!
And for the last time, I am NOT a loser Angry

In conversation with his imaginary friend Bitcoin Re-hash, Nobody went on to say:

Quote from: Mr Nobody
What was that Bitcoin Re-Hash? You're saying you're very healthy, and would like some not-spoofed transactions to eat for your breakfast? I can give you some hot air and an empty website full of people I paid to talk to you if you like? What's that, you want some real food? How about me and Craig Wright do some mud-wrestling for you? Or me and Christine Lagarde could kiss with tongues?"

I think we can all agree Bitcoin friends, this is groundbreaking stuff from Mr Something-or-other!  Be sure to subscribe to his feeds to find out the next important chapter in this story!!!

Wow! I literally cannot contain my excitement about this! Everyone should reply to tell us what they think about this crucial development in Bitcoin, we need to make sure it gets the attention it deserves!!

Then you are thinking selfishly if you are thinking about receiving payment just to use your own property. Like other taxes, it is imposed by the government to generate money for a public purpose. It's for everyone. The tax you pay goes into many places.
  • Salary of government workers
  • Garbage collection
  • Police
  • Firefighters
  • Other government services

not really

these days, almost all of the money goes to servicing old government debts multiple decades in the past, so in a way you are paying for these things: from the 1930's, 1940's. 1950's, 1960's....

TBH, I don't like paying taxes as much as I would want to but it's required and it's for a better cause, if there are corrupt people collecting those fees, it's not on my conscience. I just know I'm doing the right thing and it's for the betterment of everyone in the country.

I disagree

If for instance, you live in the US and pay US federal taxes, some of your tax dollars are being used to pay for the Manhattan Project (assuming the funding is still outstanding, a distinct possibility), or certainly for the Vietnam War.

If I paid for the Vietnam War, I would find it weighing on my conscience. I guess everyone's conscience is different Undecided

The Lebanese currency (Lebanese pound) has largely collapsed due to excessive inflation and corruption, which has gradually eroded the value of the currency against the dollar.

Nope, it didn't.

The Lebanese pound is pegged at 1500 LBP for 1$ since 1997.

did the dollar peg not fail in the black market recently? it's hard to tell, we're relying alot on hearsay from Lebanese people living this situation, but I've heard that the LBP/USD peg is meaningless now when doing cash business in a free market

Offchain solutions can't provide equivalent security to the blockchain.

you meant "existing offchain solutions"

I think it's important to remember that this is a very immature tech. There are people working on other possibilities for offchain tech, check out the Scaling Bitcoin conference videos for a few examples.

There is a very long time to wait before any problems with Bitcoin's present miner incentive scheme begin to show. Literally decades. I expect that either Bitcoin will switch to a 2nd layer solution that outperforms blockchain tech, or that Bitcoin itself will be wiped out by something unknown. I also expect that either could take a long time to happen, again, perhaps decades.

In the meantime, the mining reward schedule that we're already using along with payment channels on the 2nd layer can buy a huge amount of time for people to work on a permanent solution. And there are risks in switching to a constant inflation schedule, most of the people who took an interest in Bitcoin did so because the inflation schedule was designed to go to zero, people were attracted by those economic principles.

So what are the inflation-happy people going to do if we all stop using Bitcoin and switch to another anti-inflation money? Will you keep following us every time we change to the latest non-inflating money, and start the same debate all over again? Bitcoin already is the "we-don't-want-inflation-leave-us-alone" coin

So thanks for your help, but no thanks Undecided

I don't understand the interface yet but I assume any wireless keyboard.  And mouse?

i would resist the urge to rely on a mouse.

you will end up learning to use the command line no matter what, once you're up to speed, the mouse will become a spare part. And if you stop using a desktop, your machine will have more RAM to use for Bitcoin and Lightning (RPis share RAM between the CPU and the GPU, you can change how much the GPU uses in the file /boot/config.txt)
730  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to use Bitcoin's Lightning Network? on: October 29, 2019, 08:36:07 PM
Huh

it uses BTC

why would people talk about Lightning for BTC if it used a different coin? I don't know how you got such inaccurate information

I've got a suggestion for you. Don't do it. I'm not convinced you won't make a mistake, and Lightning's still too rough around the edges for people who don't know what they're doing to start going on adventures with it
731  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory does not update balance and blocks on: October 29, 2019, 05:09:08 PM
your answer doesn't make any sense to me, but I'm glad you solved the problem, whatever it was
732  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-10-18] ‘Trojanized’ Tor Browser steals Bitcoin from Darknet users on: October 29, 2019, 02:05:25 PM
I can't even remember the last time I visited a .onion domain.

there's a very simple reason.

I use Tor for most websites, because it adds noise to the signal, and that helps people who need Tor (including sometimes me). So if you're using Tor anyway for regular websites (loads of normal websites have a .onion version now, e.g. DuckDuckGo) that have a .onion url, guess what? The .onion site is faster to load, because the extra latency of sending it back out of Tor through an exit (and then back into Tor and only then on to your browser) is avoided, .onion traffic goes into Tor once and then straight back out to you.

I can't even remember the last time I visited a .onion domain. But still reports put illegal uses at a very high level

I dunno, it's usually the same media sources that are full of "darkweb" ghost stories that say things like that.

Thought experiment: if Tor really works, and if newspapers aren't lying when they say they don't have intimate connections to intelligence agencies, then how could they possibly know what people are using Tor for?
733  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-10-18] ‘Trojanized’ Tor Browser steals Bitcoin from Darknet users on: October 29, 2019, 12:14:30 PM
If someone is using Tor, it doesn't mean that they are some l33t cypherpunks, it's likely just people who want to buy drugs online, and use that browser because that's the only way to access .onion sites.

but not always

I run my own .onion domain, you know why? Nothing nefarious, it's just easier to set up an addressable IP that way. I can login to my Raspberry Pi remotely using the .onion address, then check my lightning node, manage it, or (only in rare cases for now) use it to pay for something.

asking your ISP to give you a static IP to use and configuring it through a router is not such a great option; if you change to a new ISP (or just move to a new place), it all has to be set up again. A .onion domain you can setup in about 5 minutes (less really), and you can take it anywhere without having to go through a whole load of bs. Bitcoin's gonna be supporting I2P and CJDNS sometime soon (and so hopefully Lightning will too). Those 2 are better tech than Tor in many ways, and you can use them just as easily to set up a reachable IP.

so using Tor can easily have nothing at all to do with anonymity (Lightning is designed to be anonymized whether you use it over Tor or not), it's simply a case of practicality for me.
734  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Advice on Raspberry pi hardware for running full BTC node on: October 29, 2019, 10:13:12 AM
no, newer RPi's (4 and 3B+) can be booted from USB based storage. If you want to update the Linux kernel (which will improve the stability of the microboard over time), USB booting is the best option long term. But getting up and running booting from SD is fine, just remember that those kernel updates will (very slowly) wear out the SD card too.

By any chance, do you need to update the firmware of the RPi? Discussion on other forum mention RPi 4 don't support USB booting.

no, the newer RPi's boot direct from USB without firmware updates. The 3B (not 3B+) needed a change to the /boot/config.txt file to specify the UUID of the disk containing the alternative root partition, but 3B+ and the 4 can pick up the /boot folder and the root partition directly from a USB based SATA disk.

Maybe this won't work with USB flash drives? But with USB attached SATA yes, the RPi 4 even has a special new disk-over-USB protocol to make SATA work better than it did with the RPi3.

I couldn't find a better power supply than the one included with the case. 5v 3A

I'm pretty sure you should be able to get a 5A rated power supply, the RPi4 definitely will want plenty of power as it's processor is more capable than the RPi3, and all the extra RAM also wants more power too.

These microboard style computers often have people talking on forums about how having the higher rated power supply helps improve stability when you're maxing it out, e.g. using the processor alot, or using alot of USB connected devices simultaneously. The RPi4 in particular has had problems with it's power consumption (and overheating) that have been mitigated by updating it's firmware since release (RPi4 is pretty new in stores, and the engineers at the Raspberry Pi co. didn't get it working optimally before it was publicly released, it's still being tweaked)
735  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: BTC not showing in Armory wallet on: October 28, 2019, 11:55:44 PM
  • Why do you think Armory is not connecting to Bitcoin?
  • Does it say "Disconnected" in the bottom right of Armory's main window?
  • Is Bitcoin caught up on blocks? Should be more than 600,000 blocks if so
736  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory does not update balance and blocks on: October 28, 2019, 11:52:02 PM
Something I noticed is that on the bottom right side of the Armory is written "connected (38026 blocks)". However, it has been a few days since this number of blocks (38026).

right, Armory won't work if it can't catch up with Bitcoin's blocks

I have tried to rescan and rebuild databases etc a bunch of times, but it won't show up.

People have had a lot of problems with Windows and Armory recently, perhaps some change to Windows could've provoked a bug. Do you have another computer (with Linux on it)?
737  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-10-26] Crypto Owners in US Have Risen 81% YTD on: October 28, 2019, 09:57:55 PM
That reminds me of how exchanges and other services boasted about how many account registrations they had in the last x number of months.

...and that reminds me of that Well Fargo scandal a couple years ago where they got caught signing up 1000's of clients for accounts they (WF) used to perform their own transactions, without the clients knowledge (let alone applying for Undecided )

savers are just as legitimate as spenders in this economic model.

or in any economic model

the fact is, I and other BTC holders are not just speculating on Bitcoin's future, we're speculating on the USD's future too, USD holders are doing the same thing the other way around. We're looking at the world and predicting a changed future, dollar holders are predicting the future will be similar to the recent past. Both are speculative, as no-one knows what the outcome will be. Maybe both will last forever, maybe they'll both be outrun by some other currency.
738  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Advice on Raspberry pi hardware for running full BTC node on: October 28, 2019, 01:54:07 PM
You can, but few devices such as RPi 4 technically can't boot from USB storage. microSD still needed to point RPi 4 to boot from USB storage.

no, newer RPi's (4 and 3B+) can be booted from USB based storage. If you want to update the Linux kernel (which will improve the stability of the microboard over time), USB booting is the best option long term. But getting up and running booting from SD is fine, just remember that those kernel updates will (very slowly) wear out the SD card too.

I strongly recommend you to buy good power supply (buy official ones if you're not sure), especially because you most likely will run it 24/7 with few USB device attached.

...and go for a high current power supply if it's available from the vendor. Some USB devices draw a fair amount of power, the CPU & RAM need power when working hard, so best to deliver as much as the RPi is rated for to keep it stable.
739  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-10-26] Crypto Owners in US Have Risen 81% YTD on: October 28, 2019, 01:45:36 PM
A lot of people might have created Bitcoin wallets for fun (it takes just a few seconds). But these wallets are all empty, with no transaction ever occurring with them. I am afraid that the survey might have counted these wallets as well.

Most wallets do that automatically for convenience purposes. I however don't for a second think that they counted empty addresses because it's meaningless on its own as anyone can generate addresses out of thin air at any time.

there is no possible method for counting unused addresses anyway.

unless the address is used, it doesn't appear in the blockchain. the only way unused wallets could be miscounted like that would be if a webwallet did so, but you'd be unwise to believe any such unverifiable claims made by webwallet sites, they're pretty heavy on the "marketing rhetoric" (i.e. bs), as you would expect
740  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-10-24] Lightning Network User Reportedly Loses 4 Bitcoin: What Happened on: October 28, 2019, 01:25:18 AM
I don't think it's common nowadays because probably people are more careful and there are often warnings if the fee is set too high, but at least with high fees I remember people even getting a lot of their money back from transactions mined by P2Pool, as unlikely as that sounds.

no, I think that was slush's pool that returned the accidental 100 BTC transaction fee (the original thread was here on Bitcointalk, cannot remember when though). P2pool would've been a nightmare to get overpaid fees refunded, there were usually 100-200 payouts per block, where the 50 or 25 BTC reward (don't think p2pool survived past 12.5 BTC) got paid to that many addresses. They'd all have to have been paying attention (and be sympathetic to the mistake too) to refund it all! Slush's pool is still pretty big last I checked.
