1001  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Antiviruses on: September 06, 2019, 02:28:31 PM
He is not recommending to not use an AV. He was saying that - under some circumstances - an AV is not necessary, which is absolutely correct.

well, I'm saying that it's really never necessary.

even if you need a Windows only application, if you spend a little more on RAM for your computer, you could run it in a virtual machine and keep it isolated from the source of viruses (i.e. webpages & other internet activity would be separate, no anti virus needed if virus attack vectors are kept separate)

interesting how this user has to attack me, apparently because I've been on bitcointalk for a long time?
1002  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: First dental clinic in Budapest to accept bitcoin on: September 06, 2019, 02:23:05 PM
99% of the customers are Europeans, just to let you know we all use the same currency and we all use SEPA.

Hungary has it's own currency still, although it's possible that businesses like that in the OP do accept the Euro anyway (often the case in the tourist industry, but the exchange rate is often not very competitive, expect to get a worse deal). Some non-Euro area banks have access to SEPA also, not sure about Hungarian banks though.
1003  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Antiviruses on: September 06, 2019, 09:32:10 AM
I understand you, it will be necessary to try. But which Antivirus is still better for these tasks, Kaspersky or Avast?

I would be wary of Kaspersky, as they've been accused of having ties to the Russian government. They have since shaken a few things up, but why run the risk when there are other viable alternatives that aren't caught up in controversy?

it wouldn't surprise me (and shouldn't anyone else) to learn of accusations that Avast has ties to the Czech government, or McAfee to the US government.

anti-virus companies have in the past been accused of creating new viruses to boost demand for their products. I don't know about the provenance of those claims, but certainly that incentive exists.

seeing as the anti-virus concept is a medical metaphor anyway, why not invoke another: prevention is better than cure

and so all you anti-virus advocates are doing the equivalent of eating massive bags of chips, gallons of Cola, doing zero exercise and zero research on your health, hanging out in strip clubs, then going to the doctor when you feel like shit, where you get a bunch of pills that give you so many side-effects that it's not much of an improvement on having a virus and doing nothing about it Cheesy
1004  Other / Serious discussion / Re: It's hard to know who to believe. on: September 06, 2019, 09:06:26 AM
As a side note, why do you think that atmospheric concentration of CO2 has gone up by 0.01% since the industrial age?

that's the non-controversial part that (apparently nearly everyone) agrees on; 0.03% CO2 pre 1900, 0.04% CO2 at the beginning of C21st. It's frankly surprising that you claim never to have heard this, it is an often repeated pair of data points

if your friends are correct, then the alarmist perspective is also correct.

assuming a linear trend (which would be a conservative assumption seeing as energy production and vehicle use are in an upward trend), that's a 0.12% increase per year, in 50 years a 6% increase. That really would change the strength of the greenhouse effect, although the full effects are subject to decades of lag.

something tells me that the IPCC people would be screaming with blue faces about such a thing if that were really the case though.

Or, are you simply stating that CO2 measurements oscillates by up to 0.01% in a given month? i.e. it increases or decreases by 0.01% about a longer term trend?

You just need to make sure that the source of your information is correct. This means if you download an .asc file, make sure you download it from the correct site.
And if you import it from a keyserver, makesure the ID you are using is coming from the correct source/website.

1006  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-09-03] 'Big 4' Giant PwC Accepts BTC in Filthy-Rich Tax Haven Luxembourg on: September 06, 2019, 08:45:29 AM
To the guys like me, it's still the latter who're visible, things like the Satellite network and then their Lightning implementation are what keeps them in the line of sight.

right.

when Blockstream just invested money in development or infrastructure (the satellite network or c-lightning), they did a good job. When they try to do anything that actually turns a profit, (Lightning Labs did the same with Lightning Loop), they have a tendency to end up alienating more or less everyone

really, the most profitable way to invest in the Bitcoin is to accept it for existing business models (as PwC are here), or to invest directly in BTC as an asset. Any successful new business model is going to be something that's pro-competition, the economy all over the world is currently over-saturated with monopolies and oligopolies as it is.

Bitcoin breaks up established business monopolies, trying to use it to create new monopolies (as Blockstream and Lightning Labs tried to with Liquid and Lightning Loop) just causes people to say "but surely there's some innovative way around these wannabe mafiosas", which there always will be. Getting around bullies to level the playing field is the whole point of Bitcoin.
1007  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Criticisms of the Lightning Network on: September 05, 2019, 09:20:28 PM
All three aren't working?  What would be the odds of that?

that's why I'm suggesting ACINQ's route finding might be at fault, both Zap and Eclair no doubt share some codebase as both are developed by ACINQ

not sure what you could be doing wrong, I haven't used Zap or Eclair. Maybe you've just opened channels (unluckily?) in a poorly connected part of the network graph?
1008  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-09-05] Fewer People Are Sending Bitcoin to Largest Crypto Exchanges on: September 05, 2019, 09:17:41 PM
I'd be curious to see the numbers for Coinbase, who I think is more representative of what new or typical users are doing.

wouldn't we all, but Coinbase are unlikely to ever release anything but the most cooked/opaque figures they can slap together
1009  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-09-03] 'Big 4' Giant PwC Accepts BTC in Filthy-Rich Tax Haven Luxembourg on: September 05, 2019, 09:12:02 PM
One thing struck me, they claim thay are already heavenly involved in this, have they openly acknowledged with this they actually told their clients to invest in bitcoin?

no, PwC invested themselves, and they did not buy BTC. What they did was give seeding money to Bitcoin development companies, one of which was Blockstream. I'm rather glad that Blockstream are less relevant to funding Bitcoin development than they once were, Chaincode (who are funded by Bitcoin early adopters IIUC) are a more significant part of the funding these days.
1010  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-09-03] Burger King Starts Accepting Bitcoin for Online Orders in Germany on: September 05, 2019, 09:07:56 PM
ahhh, so people on reddit misunderstood. figures.
1011  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-09-03] Burger King Starts Accepting Bitcoin for Online Orders in Germany on: September 05, 2019, 06:09:22 PM
I believed the article writer was 100% correct because Bitcoin was among the payment systems on the Burger king site and on reddit people said the site accepted Bitcoin payment long ago before the news broke out.
The question is, why would they add Bitcoin logo to their site if they are not accepting it as payment?

that's big-ish news if correct

I imagine that with a franchise business operating model (that fast food corporations often use), the franchisee has alot of leeway to choose things like payment networks as a part of their contract with the parent company, so one can see how an association of franchisees from 1 country might get together and convince the parent company to do this through the (in this case) .de website.

the franchisees are actually real business owners, who can sell the "restaurant" (a bad description for BurgerKing IMO) to whoever wants to buy, so presumably they want to do the best they can out of their initial investment. Taking BTC might seem like a good way to do that, but we need more information about this story really
1012  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: PPA vs. DEB install. Which is better for Armory & Bitcoin Core? on: September 05, 2019, 03:01:03 PM
Thanks Carlton - to my understanding, PureOS is a fork of Debian Testing.

well, no!

Debian is the underlying OS. It doesn't need to have mouse pointers and windows, Debian (and all other Linux) is just a terminal, like the old MS-DOS, if you remember that, literally a black screen with a terminal prompt in the top left corner (scary!)

Debian lets you choose a different DE, they support about 4-5 different ones. Cinammon is a DE. xfce is my own personal fave DE, but it's down to personal choice.
1013  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: PPA vs. DEB install. Which is better for Armory & Bitcoin Core? on: September 05, 2019, 02:23:57 PM
By DE, do you mean which Debian? Specifically PureOS by Purism.

he means "Desktop Environment"

it's basically a bunch of programs that provides you with the desktop graphics, and responds to you moving the mouse and clicking things (multiple different DE's are available for Linux, MacOS and Windows have only 1 possible DE)

for PureOS, I think it's Cinammon, isn't it? Don't know tbh
1014  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: PPA vs. DEB install. Which is better for Armory & Bitcoin Core? on: September 05, 2019, 01:03:00 PM
you can do (when inside of the directory):
Code:
apt-get install ./armory.deb

It usually is recommended to stick with apt-get, because it doesn't just install a package, but also looks for dependencies since it is a package management software.

didn't know this, good job bob123
1015  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-09-03] Burger King Starts Accepting Bitcoin for Online Orders in Germany on: September 05, 2019, 11:29:29 AM
We have to check ourself the authenticity of the information given to us, bitcointalk has a lot of new members sharing information as well so it is up to us to find what part of that information is correct.

right, people have different reputations for relaying information accurately. thanks for reminding us.
1016  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Criticisms of the Lightning Network on: September 05, 2019, 11:21:36 AM
I have Eclair on two mobile devices, and Zap on my PC all have three BTC 0.0011 channels open the first two are random while the third is via nodes in and around Amsterdam in the hope that these would enable transactions to and from Loyce's devices. (yes, before anyone asks, that's nine channels) the only TX I've been able to send or receive on either mobile device is if both are open and I get really, really lucky that channels are found between the two devices.  Zap was able to send a "repayment" to Loyce but hasn't been able to send to either mobile device.  Zap doesn't recognise payment requests from one mobile, but will accept payment requests from the other mobile... even though both devices installed the exact same copy of the apk file for Android Devices.

sounds like the path finding with Eclair and/or Zap isn't working. Either that or you're making some mistake or other. If you look at the Lightning network graph, it's well connected, so there shouldn't be more than maximum 8-12 hops to find the longest route (and the average route length will be lower than that)
1017  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: PPA vs. DEB install. Which is better for Armory & Bitcoin Core? on: September 05, 2019, 09:13:28 AM
what you're basically doing above is

  • checking that the list of "matching codes" you download is signed by the Bitcoin/Armory developers (the gpg --verify SHA256SUM.asc command)
  • checking the Bitcoin/Armory program you download matches the one from the developers (the sha256sum command)

once you've got Goatpig and Wladimir's keys in your online PC, you can skip that step in future

doing it this way is all about being very sure someone hasn't hacked the website you're getting Bitcoin/Armory from. As long as you've got the right key for Goatpig and Wladimir (and as long as those 2 keep their keys safe), then you can't accidentally download a fake version that steals all your money
1018  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: PPA vs. DEB install. Which is better for Armory & Bitcoin Core? on: September 05, 2019, 09:05:13 AM
for bitcoin, it's kind of the same, just there is no .deb and a different website

  • go to https://bitcoincore.org/bin
  • download version of your choice (newest is generally best) and the corresponding SHA256SUM.asc file
  • Download the Wladimir van der Laan key (it's at https://bitcoincore.org, go to "Downloads" section)
  • gpg --import wladimirs-key.asc (again, it's called something different to that in reality)
  • gpg --verify SHA256SUM.asc
  • sha256sum bitcoin-whatever-version.tar.gz
  • compare the output of sha256sum bitcoin-whatever-version.tar.gz with the line that says "bitcoin-whatever-version.tar.gz" in the SHA256SUM file (open SHA256SUM in text editor to do this)
  • if the hashes (long string of letters and numbers) match, tar -xf bitcoin-whatever-version.tar.gz
  • sudo cp ./bitcoin-whatever-version/bin/bitcoin* /usr/bin
  • ***optional*** get the bitcoin.desktop file from https://github.com/bitcoin/contrib and sudo mv bitcoin.desktop /usr/share/applications, this will give you a desktop icon to click in your desktop menu
1019  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: PPA vs. DEB install. Which is better for Armory & Bitcoin Core? on: September 05, 2019, 08:48:21 AM
don't do any of that IMO

1. Go to github.com/goatpig
2. find Amory
3. find downloads, download latest .deb and SHA256SUM file
4. find Goatpig's key, download and do: gpg --import goatpigs-key.asc (it's not called goatpigs-key, but something similar)
5. gpg --verify SHA256SUM  (it might be called SHA256SUM.asc, can't remember offhand)
6. sha256sum armory.deb
7. compare the output of sha256sum armory.deb with the line that says "armory.deb" in the SHA256SUM file (open SHA256SUM in text editor to do this)
8. if the hashes (long string of letters and numbers) match, dpkg -i armory.deb

I think the armory.deb you need will be the one with "GCC7" in the name
1020  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoiners in Hong Kong protests? on: September 05, 2019, 08:11:23 AM
BCH QR codes for donations printed in water bottles. Users must be careful, because they might send Bitcoins in them. Cool

it wouldn't work with anything except the oldest possible wallet software, the address format has been different for a long time now.
