741  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: {Announce} Coming soon Bitphone on: October 20, 2011, 04:16:49 PM
Web-based payphone powered by Bitcoins accessible via TOR
There will also by softphone and hardware SIP access available.

I'm bringing back the anonymous phone call. Stay tuned. Project is 25% complete.

Calls will be SRTP + ZRTP + TLS encrypted. Access will be based on actual polling of the block chain so there is no database to be hacked.
Comments welcome.

Nice.  Will users be able to verify that their call is encrypted, or do we have to trust your website?

743  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Media : Bitcoin is Done on: October 18, 2011, 05:04:18 PM
Bitcoin is P2P.  It can't die.  It can drop in value, but unlike a company or central authority it can't go away.  I don't think they understand this.
744  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is the Occupy movement not immediately embracing bitcoin? on: October 12, 2011, 04:53:59 PM
bitcoin can be hard to explain to non-techies...keep on trying.
745  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / #occupysd Occupy San Diego on: October 12, 2011, 04:35:50 AM
I'm thinking about heading out this Saturday morning and spending the entire day at Occupy San Diego.  They are camping out indefinitely at the Civic Center.  Anyone interested?  I will make a sign.  What should the sign say?  The sign should mention bitcoin somewhere.
746  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Project Mainstream Update - We're calling in Alex Jones NOW. on: October 10, 2011, 04:47:14 PM
The guy uses the number like a carrot on a stick. It's coming any moment now. You can still help. Get your phone and click the link in the OP...

Again, mention our Bitcoin friends on OccupyWallStreet. Mentioned ending the FED, etc.

Specifically mention #operationbitcoin at #operationwallstreet.

What question should I ask if I get in?

749  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: #occupywallstreet #operationbitcoin GA Bitcoin Speech for Open Mic on: October 07, 2011, 09:22:51 PM
I recommend taking the advice on this page into account.

I like evoorhees' bit, but it may not work very well in the format.

Why not just announce that Bitcoin is a money not controlled by large financial and government interests, and anyone who wishes to learn more about it should meet at X place and Y time?

Lesson #1 of PR: know your audience.

The protesters are in the mood for high rhetoric and impact - the statement to them needs to be such. Given the demographic and tenor of the audience, I tried to imagine what Che Guevara would say, if he knew what he was talking about.

The wiki page is great general advice for a general audience, but this is not a general audience.

I don't agree with Michael Moore all the time but go find him and convince him to use bitcoins.  Use his celebrity power so people will listen.

Go to bitcoin.org!!!  Bitcoin is the answer to all your problems and our children's problems!!!  Bitcoin is decentralized and there is no bank to ruin your lives!!!  Bitcoin is the key to a non-wallstreet dominated culture!!!
751  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: NEW Major chain restaurant to accept Bitcoins? on: October 07, 2011, 07:18:18 PM

If you all are going to be emailing these people, try to stick to just facts that represent the situation and person you are emailing only.  Don't let them know about Bitcoin users that are only in it for the politics of it all (unless you are one of them, then just try and keep the focus on Bitcoin and not your weird theories on why the world sucks).

Well done jimbobway, my above comment has nothing to do with your exchange at all, really pro.  The person just needs to understand the ability to accept Bitcoin and the ease to do so, is not going to get in the way of established business they get, it can really only bring in more.

Thanks for the tip.  I prob won't mention the Wallstreet protests next time I do it.
752  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: NEW Major chain restaurant to accept Bitcoins? on: October 07, 2011, 05:05:45 PM
I got a restaurant "Stacked" interested in bitcoins.  Read from bottom to top:

I am very eager to explain how bitcoin works.  Right now there are about 20+ bitcoin exchanges that convert USD to BTC and BTC to USD.  Last year there were no exchanges but bitcoin has been growing really fast.

Bitcoin derives its value from supply and demand.  There are people on exchanges that are willing to pay for bitcoins.  For example, if you go to bitcoinwatch.com you can see the current value of bitcoin which is around $4.50 a coin.  This value fluctuates since bitcoin is so new, but in the long run (maybe many years) it may become a stable currency.

Why do people want bitcoins?  Bitcoin has certain properties that people desire.  First, there will only be 21 million bitcoins in existence so in essence there is a limited supply.  Bitcoin also has little or no transaction fee compared to credit cards (where they charge the merchant a percentage fee.)  Another property of bitcoin is that it is global and you can send it to China in a hour or less.  Other methods of international payment may take days or weeks and there is an international fee.  Bitcoin, I believe, is sort of like digital gold.

I can understand why you need USD to pay your staff.  I think bit-pay.com allows you to convert any BTC daily into USD.  Again, I am not affiliated with them and I am just excited about bitcoins and it's ability to end Wallstreet dominance since it does not require a central authority to perform a transaction (no PayPal, Citibank, etc.)

Thanks Jim, although I looked at the site, I have to admit, I don't understand how a bitcoin derives value.

Does it have a tie to the US monetary system?  If I can't pay my suppliers and staff with it, how can I accept it for payment?
Interested in continuing this dialogue.

Thanks for your response.  Just an idea, but your business could gain some media attention if you used bitcoins.  There is a restaurant in New York called Meze Grill that accepts bitcoins and they were featured on CNN.  Also, there could be a niche market of people that would go to your restaurant to specifically spend bitcoins.  Please see this mobile checkout program:  https://bit-pay.com/aboutMobile.html  I am not affiliated with that company, but I am a bitcoin enthusiast.

Thanks for your time,
Jim

Jim, thanks for your note.  I hadn't heard of bitcoins before, but did take the time to look at their site.  It's not something we support currently, but if it gains mass appeal we will certainly take a look at it in the future.  Thanks for your note.

754  Economy / Speculation / Re: Rally is starting on: October 07, 2011, 10:24:19 AM
My bread and butter job is doing English and quality systems (mainly HACCP and IFS with a bit of six-sigma thrown in for good measure) training for a range of different companies here and designing courses and materials for use as supplementary coursebooks in public schools from grades 1-12.

Apart from that I do product sourcing and quality inspections for a couple of European companies from here mainly seeds, nuts and that kind of foodstuffs. As Dalian happens to be a fairly large transit hub for that kind of product. This is NOT a very lively business atm.

As to my own business I do a tiny bit in different types of handmade paper for specialty artists supply shops mainly in Scandinavia atm.

What bitcoin has enabled me to do is to take quite a few extra contracts where I suddenly have to jump all over China to do onsite inspections. I've had companies pay me retainers or upfront expenses in bitcoin instead of waiting for SWIFT to get it's act together. This is usually done using personal $$ by some of their staff and I haven't got a clue as to how they put it on their books.

The last contract I did of this type was for a small German bakery-wholesalers that had a container of sunflower seeds that the shipper found an infestation in (yup bugs). I got paid an advance of 280BTC to cover airfare etc. and then I jumped on a plane to Qingdao looked at the container and declared it good to go with the addition of a fumigant.

The advantage for the client here is that I could go with 2 hours notice, I made a killing (by local standards) for an afternoons work. And they saved 10X the amount on non paid demurage compared with going via SWIFT or sending someone out from back home (in this case probably more savings). This is make or break money for lots of small-medium businesses.

It's not something that I'll get rich of but simply the value of this service compared with the banking system should push the price of bitcoin WAY past it's current levels.

This is probably not applicable on a large scale yet, as lots of companies need bitcoins to become legal something for them to be able to put this kind of expenses properly on their books. The handful of companies that I'm currently dealing with have know and dealt with me for years and are willing to bend the rules a little to get win-win deals.

This is a great post of bitcoin being used in real life.  Thanks for sharing.

Update:  I gave my pitch to the CEO, the CTO, and another "unknown" guy.  I am guessing the guy is powerful in some sort of way.

My presentation was about educating the masses on bitcoin and how to make money doing it.  I'll find out soon if they like my presentation.

Is there an "official" homepage for the Bitcoin project in China? I mean a clone/mirror of bitcoin.org?  If so, are these translations available there?

I don't think so.  There used to be translations but they are no longer maintained.  bitecoin.com is the closest version of the Chinese website I've seen.

Is the original only avaiable as PDF and converted from PDF but not directly in any other format? (so to not add artifacts from the conversion from PDF)

Are you talking about the Chinese PDFs? Or the original?

For the Chinese PDFs I was only given PDFs and I uploaded it to Google Docs without Google format conversion.

For the original PDF that satoshi created I do not know of another format it could be in.
