761  Economy / Speculation / Re: What would make you really worry? on: March 20, 2015, 06:29:21 PM
Only a major ban by the USA or China, a series of exchange bankruptcies or hacks.
If you're worried about the price, my question is: did you sell when it was below $200? If not why are you worried now? Bitcoin is actually recovering after hitting the bottom in January.
762  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ukraine 'to Crackdown on Separatist Bitcoin Accounts' on: March 20, 2015, 06:24:21 PM
Drugs, gambling, guns, ISIS and now Ukrainian protesters. Bitcoin is surely becoming more and more popular.
Even if by accounts they mean their addresses, I wonder how they are planning to block these. Jam their internet access? Cheesy It's funny that these government services can't afford to hire an expert to at least use the proper terminology.
763  Economy / Economics / Re: Machines and money on: March 20, 2015, 06:12:40 PM
You are confusing (as is standard in AI visibly) subjective consciousness and intelligence.  Intelligence is observable, objective and so on.  Consciousness isn't.  We can never know whether an entity is really conscious ; but we clearly can observe that an entity is intelligent.

You are wrong. Ever heard of a consciousness test? Just a short explanation i quickly googled for you:

(...) only a conscious machine can demonstrate a subjective understanding of whether a scene depicted in some ordinary photograph is “right” or “wrong.” This ability to assemble a set of facts into a picture of reality that makes eminent sense—or know, say, that an elephant should not be perched on top of the Eiffel Tower—defines an essential property of the conscious mind. A roomful of IBM supercomputers, in contrast, still cannot fathom what makes sense in a scene.
764  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Cointerra 1.6TH Units Exploding with flames shooting out. on: March 20, 2015, 12:48:50 AM
Just a few thoughts that might help. Check the thing that blew, if its a capacitor it's probably the filter. It is placed in most electronic equipment between the positive and negative inputs.
It's fairly easy to burn it if you switch the inputs or have a short somewhere, so just like others have said check the cables with a probe or a multimeter and look for loose screws. The miners should still work, just replace the burned cap and clean the board.
765  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Methods of getting free electricity on: March 19, 2015, 11:20:11 PM
I wonder if it would be possible to heat a water heater with miners, I know people were talking about it with the liquid cooled miners.

Of course, you'd just have to do the math and probably run the miners in a closed loop, because you'd need a higher pressure in the boiler. It would be good to install a heat pump to make it more efficient.
The reason why people aren't doing it is probably due to the short life of their miners. You rarely use the same units for more than a year so it's not worth it.
766  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What Do You Think Of Fitcoin? on: March 19, 2015, 11:04:51 PM
I mean we should all be working out regardless of financial incentive, but have you seen the people it's targeted at?!!

Stereotypes, we all love them. Wink All bitcoiners are fat nerds, right?

I actually like the idea because as Bitcoin becomes more popular the companies will target the general population, not only computer enthusiasts.
767  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin the bad guy? on: March 19, 2015, 10:43:42 PM
It has to be extremely hot in there. If he wanted to torture James he could chain him to the floor and come back in 12 hours. Our agent would be dry like jerky by then Cheesy

In the movie he's probably breaking encryptions or passwords and needs a lot of computing power. A true villain wouldn't mine Bitcoin, where's the evil in that?
768  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin or gold? on: March 19, 2015, 10:29:04 PM

"A number of people" you make reference to here (which hold bags full of bars and coins) do not keep their gold at home. There are specialized high-security bank vaults for keeping gold in bullion banks. The gold in these vaults is also typically insured at that...

But it's against the whole idea of Bitcoin i.e. keeping your wealth under control. If you store it in a bank you could as well invest in fiat, there's no difference Wink

It is a moot point (in respect to gold), since when you keep it at home, it can be stolen by robbers, but when you keep it in a bank vault it can be expropriated by state or even stolen by the bank itself. This is true. Nevertheless, these misfortunes are set off by the bitcoin volatility and its potential to go down in value to nothing. That would essentially be the same as the gold you possess being stolen...
That's right, but theft is usually sudden and leaves you no time to react. I really doubt it's possible for Bitcoin to go down 90% in a short period of time (like 24h). In extreme case it would be losing 20% a day without a rebound, so you'd have enough time to save at least half of it. Volatility can be dangerous, but it can't be put on the same level as theft or seizure.
769  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Evolution has run off with all user's funds on: March 18, 2015, 11:24:58 PM
i am new to following bitcoin is something like this part of the drop in price today. Or is todays drop normal?

there is nothing "normal' in terms of bitcoin volitity. usd and other currencies shift at most 1-2? in the short term bitcoin can do big jumps.

go to sites like coindesk and look at the price charts  eg in 2 days in january it went from $267 to $177 and a day later back to $210.

 Grin

Today's drop was more than normal, compared to daily prices changes in the past few months. Yesterday IIRC the peak was about $295 USD, and now a coin is selling for about $255 USD, which translates to a 15% drop in less than 24 hours.

A 15% drop in 24 hours normal? That's why I love this crazy world of Bitcoin. You won't find people saying things like that anywhere else in the financial world.
770  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2015-03-17] ValueWalk‎: Winklevoss Twins: Bitcoin Will “Wipe Out” Cash By 2025 on: March 18, 2015, 11:20:32 PM
Damn, another 10 years before it happens? I'll be old by then Sad
It doesn't seem to optimistic, though. Look at personal computer and internet expansion. 20 years maybe one out of 10 families had a computer at home and even less had access to the internet.  Now it's hard to find somebody that doesn't, at least in developed countries. Soon the same will happen with electronic money. Maybe it won't be Bitcoin, but other electronic currency, but the money of the internet will prevail.
771  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 18, 2015, 11:04:17 PM
we are bouncing to 270 dollars again , here we go, fasten your seatbelts..
It's about time. Wtf was that dump anyway? Price was slowly growing for 2 weeks and then suddenly crashed out of the blue in 12 hours back to where it started. I smell a manipulation...

773  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Quantum computing on: March 18, 2015, 10:37:56 PM
The halving coming up next year will have more of an impact on miners than quantum computing in the foreseeable future.
Hopefully it will also push the prices up. If it takes more to mine, maybe it will automatically be worth more Smiley
I'm not afraid of all this quantum hype. Bitcoin is an open source platform and can be upgraded, so if the hardware becomes too advanced the software will have to adapt.
774  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sick of the confirmation time... on: March 18, 2015, 10:27:05 PM
People who are “sick of the confirmation time” don't understand that you can accept payments with 0 confirmations just fine.

Still it doesn't help when you want to move your funds to an exchange or some other place that doesn't allow you to use your money without multiple confirmations.
I had a number of transactions with a normal fee, that took more than an hour to confirm, which is quite annoying.
775  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 70 years after the Victory: Lest We Forget (despite every effort to do so) on: March 18, 2015, 10:24:52 PM
I don't think they want to "rewrite history" or are trying to deny the victory, which was in large part achieved by Russian troops. You seem to be ignoring that it's all about the current situation in Ukraine.
776  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Virtual currency in real-life strife as Bitcoin suffers bankruptcy blow on: March 17, 2015, 07:59:10 PM
Oh God NOOOOOO!!!! The World Bitcoin Association is in bankruptcy, what a blow!

Also WTF is the world bitcoin association?

We are all asking the same thing. They named themselves to look professional and important and nobody cared. Suddenly this Tom Pullar-Strecker found some random info in google and thought it must be something big if the world bitcoin association is in trouble! Time to write an article, duh...

All righty, my posts weren't cut this time and I got a good rating. Looking forward to another week Smiley
778  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: The Primedice Is Rigged Thread on: March 17, 2015, 02:52:43 PM
Only 11 losses in a row? I've seen people with 20+, who also came here and started the same conversation about it being rigged. I played there and lost just like you, but I have no proof of scam, so I keep my mouth shut. You could learn something from me. Wink
779  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin to replace cash? Maybe, but let's please first focus on Gold 2.0 on: March 17, 2015, 02:47:27 PM
winklevoss also said Facebook was there idea.
And then, when it went crazy, wanted a piece of it and went to court. They are hoping Bitcoin will be their first successful investment, so they can finally say "we told you so!"  Grin
780  Economy / Speculation / Re: I have USD 2000 to invest. Should I buy Bitcoins or gold? on: March 17, 2015, 02:49:34 AM
Did you really come to a Bitcoin forum to ask which is better gold or Bitcoin? Grin

The answer is simple. With gold you have less to gain, but also less to lose. Bitcoin can go to a couple bucks and basically cease to exist as an investment. Gold on the other hand won't become worthless, but it also won't triple its value like Bitcoin did in the past (and still can).
