7741  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Update Ledger Nano S Firmware v2.0.0 on: May 06, 2021, 10:56:52 AM
Is there a need to remove apps from Ledger nano S before flashing it with new firmware? The link you provided said nothing about it. As I recollect the previous upgrade doesn't require this and apps were allowed to be on device in the course of upgrade. Would like to  be sure first before doing any stupid thing.

Apps will be removed automatically, than firmware will be updated and apps installed again in the end, so you don't have to do anything manually except maybe making few click confirmations.
You can't really make any mistake but make sure you have the latest ledger live app, keep your 24 backup words safe, and in case something unexpected happens you can always restore your wallets.
7742  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Debunking the "Bitcoin is an environmental disaster" argument. on: May 06, 2021, 10:48:57 AM
Adding more interesting recent information to this topic because I think bad news propaganda against Bitcoin is going to get worse in near future, so we need to have more debunking information about this topic.

Nic Carter wrote and posted interesting new article for HBR Harvard Business Review explaining how much energy Bitcoin actually consumes.
We hear people talk a lot about Carbon Emissions (btw we are all made of Carbon so think about that) for Bitcoin and confusing it with energy consumption, but various research are showing that between 39% to 72% of all energy used for mining Bitcoin is actually hydro energy.
Interesting thing is that Bitcoin mining consumes energy that can be spent anywhere in the world and Bitcoin doesn't have that limitation like all other applications that need to be near energy sources.

In other article written by Hass McCook we can see great comparison made for energy consumption for Bitcoin, Gold, paper currencies and banks.
We can see that much more energy is spent and much more CO2 is produced with combined gold mining, making of gold jewellery and gold recycling  than for Bitcoin mining.
If we look at all Banking system and ATMS than we can see multiple times higher numbers according to McCook research with 400 milllion CO2 produced and 700 TWh energy used.
Maybe we still do need to use current banking system everyday but imagine how much energy would be saved if we didn't have ATMS anymore and if we stop making more gold jewellery.

7743  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Update Ledger Nano S Firmware v2.0.0 on: May 06, 2021, 09:29:45 AM
You had to trust Ledger with the older firmware upgrades as well, so nothing changes in terms of trusting/distrusting them.

I guess ''don't trust, verify'' phrase don't apply for ledger, and yes I know that nobody can verify any changes and updates made by ledger (except their small closed circle of devs), you always have to trust their words,
and after reading that IRS is seriously looking for new ways to Hack Hardware Wallets I have valid reasons to question any closed source firmware updates related to hardware wallets.
There is also whole can of worms hidden behind secret NDA contracts and past has shown that ledger is not the best dealing with information that needs to be safe.
7744  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitamp Bitcoin Web Wallet - Send & Receive Bitcoin Instantly! on: May 06, 2021, 09:04:18 AM
What's the most secure and decentralized Bitcoin wallet?

It’s probably not possible to lay claim to the “most secure” and also to “decentralized” but Electrum probably is top in this list simply because it hasn’t been hacked before (there have been some exploits very quickly fixed) and because it’s open source.

But there is one main developer behind it.

I don't think that Thomas Voegtlin is the only developer working on Electrum wallet, and you can see in their github page that over 280 people contributed their project so far.
It is true that Thomas started the project back in 2011, but ghost43 and SomberNight also have write access and they have their own contributions:

7745  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Government Controls Crypto? on: May 05, 2021, 07:13:35 PM
Ok so there are people who say that crypto is decentralized and cannot be controlled by the government. How can this be true when the government can shut down the companies or networks where you are able to buy, sell, or send crypto? What do you guys think? Do you all think that crypto is truly decentralized and cannot be controlled by the government or can they? Maybe not directly but indirectly controlled?

There is no company that government can close for Bitcoin, and there is no ceo's to arrest and question, but you can't say that for most other altcoins that are not really decentralized.
According to Luke Dashjr, Bitcoin currently have almost 80,000 nodes and it is really decentralized, compare that with other coins that mostly run their software on VPS and you can't call them decentralized.
Binance than forks that and run it between 10 to 20 people they choose, and call it a ''DEX'', it would be funny if it wasn't reality and I wonder what would Satoshi say about all this circus.
7746  Economy / Reputation / Re: My 30 questions for theymos on: May 05, 2021, 05:46:23 PM
Nobody likes to answer bunch of questions and I think 30 is a bit too much, not to mention that all bits of information you leave online can potentially help to identify his real identity if he is being honest.
You forgot to ask theymos about his favorite scary movie, but if someone ever makes a movie about Satoshi I am sure that theymos would play big part in it among all other important characters.
I personally think theymos loves sci-fi movies after reading one of his topics from 2017 for building a seastead, but maybe this was just younger version of theymos with different dreams.

The Bitcoin price is amazingly high, and it has stayed amazingly high for quite some time. I've been expecting it to crash for the last year, and I was especially expecting it to crash in response to the various B2X nonsense, but it's still quite high. These high prices may well be long-term-stable. Therefore, since we gentlemen are in fact the new wealthy elite, I think that the time has come to work toward a project that I know a lot of early Bitcoiners (including myself) have always dreamed of: a mostly-sovereign libertarian seastead. There must be a lot of Bitcoin millionaires who would be willing to work toward this.

Dream of building a seastead may be dead or hibernating but what would theymos say about Bitcoin price today?
In November 17 2017 Bitcoin was around $7,780, and fast forward few years at May 5th 2021, One Bitcoin is now worth around $57,500, so is he expecting it to crash any time soon?

Here is one of the rear post made by theymos reviewing other altcoins in August 2017, and I see he likes Monero most for obvious reasons:

Most altcoins are pure pump-and-dump, but there are a small handful that actually have some technical merit. I will list them here, according to my opinion/understanding.
...

One last question for theymos, are we ever going to see new bitcointalk forum software or was that just one more dream and dead project?
7747  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Football clubs and bitcoins on: May 05, 2021, 12:54:31 PM
I heard that Southampton FC players can receive some percentage of their choice in Bitcoin, and one Nigerian player Ifunanyachi Achara from Canadian club Toronto FC also receives his paycheck in Bitcoin with Bitwage platform.
I am not exactly sure how exactly Bitwage work, calculate and pay people, but they are register US company and they work with many individuals and companies.
Other players and clubs will also face with inflation crisis soon and many of them will join Bitcoin community sooner or later.

7748  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Update Ledger Nano S Firmware v2.0.0 on: May 05, 2021, 12:44:06 PM
They claim they balanced out the increased size of the new version of the operating system by reducing the size of most of the crypto apps. Did you check if the apps are lighter now?

I updated ledger apps and I think there is not much difference with size of individual apps, for example Bitcoin app is now 42 Kb, and I am not sure what size was before this latest firmware update but I think it was 40 Kb before, someone can correct me if I am wrong.
I know that total free space in my case is lower than it was before, however I am using only Bitcoin and Electrum so I don't really care so much, but maybe bitcoin forked coins and altcoins apps reduced in size.

Update:
So it was 44 Kb before and they reduced Bitcoin app for 2 Kb like all other bitcoin forks, but total space is reduced for 12 Kb, so it's not an issue if you don't use bunch of altcoins.
We can't verify anything so we need to trust ledger that those apps and firmware is good and without IRS special code.
7749  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Incorporating BTC the way forward for most companies? on: May 05, 2021, 12:17:33 PM
Sure, Tesla and few other companies purchased Bitcoin and everything is nice and happy when Bitcoin is going up in this bullrun but what happens during the bear market when bitcoin price goes down?
Anyone who is in crypto market for few year or longer knows that everyone will start to trashtalk Bitcoin, fud and call it dead again, but that is perfect time for companies to invest and buy more BTC.
I don't expect many companies will decide to buy BTC now but they can still decide to accept it as payment option that will help better adoption, and wait for dips to buy it.
7750  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Are any mainline stores accepting BTC on: May 05, 2021, 10:57:56 AM
Once again, I'm wondering how to spend some bitcoin. I paid a fee to buy it, and to convert it back into cash is an even larger fee. I have yet to find a store accepting it.
I don't mind watching it go up in value, but times are tuff, and that's why I invested a little in BTC.
What is the end game when we sell??  Does the tax man take most of it ?
My 3 banks I deal with won't accept transfers from crypto exchanges . I don't want to convert it to cash if there are merchants accepting it .
How about Amazon??

There are many ways you can spend Bitcoin, one is directly in shops that accept Bitcoin but that depends on specific country and city you live.
In some countries of Europe like Slovenia you can buy everywhere you want with Bitcoin directly or using their Elly application and it is widely spread.

Second option would be using debit cards and services like Coinbase card, Binance card, Revolut, etc. that allow you to send Bitcoin to their app and spend fiat with your card in any shops and atm that accept Visa or MasterCard.
Problem with this is that you are not really owner of Bitcoin the moment you send it to centralized service, so I would suggest sending only smaller amount of coins when you need to buy something, and keep rest of the BTC in your open source wallet that controls private keys (Electrum, Wasabi, Blue Wallet...).

For purchasing something on Amazon you can use purse.io website, pay with Bitcoin then get 15% discount and you can also earn crypto buy using their service:

7751  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: how many more years our bitcoins will be save from quantum supercomputer on: May 05, 2021, 10:41:28 AM
I am hearing about this quantum computer boogeyman for years and how it will destroy Bitcoin, there is even some cult like coins with only purpose to protect against imminent quantum attack that may never happen during their lifetime.
If Bitcoin is going to be affected by something like quantum computers than everything else will be affected including banks and almost every other electronic devices, so BTC will be the least of your worries.
If we look in distant future, maybe next 30 or 50 years we can say that Bitcoin forks are very likely to happen for various reasons and I would not be surprised to see one that will improve code and make it quantum resistant.
Problem with quantum computers is that they can only do one single task, they are not so smart as you may think and they are not even near mass production.

7754  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Update Ledger Nano S Firmware v2.0.0 on: May 04, 2021, 12:16:38 PM
Ledger updated firmware for their Nano S version and latest version is now 2.0.0 with some important changes, and one thing I noticed is they again reduced available space for apps to only 144Kb because their operating system size increased.
They claim there are some new important features and enhancements, but we can't really review their closed source code and we can't verify anything they say.
According to ledger blog, most of the changes are related with redesign, better user experience and supporting altcoins like eth2.0.
They added progress bar that I noticed while updating my device, and added separate settings for PIN Lock and screensaver, and removed firmware upgrade identifier.

Read more details in their blog post and let the testing begin Smiley I see people already started to complain in twitter...

7755  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [GUIDE] How to buy a Hardware Wallet the right way on: May 04, 2021, 11:55:40 AM
I am thinking the same and am thinking about going the paper wallet route. Do you know any resources of this and the pros and cons. No matter what you do you have to have your private keys and passphrase written down, hidden and retreavable. How do you use a paper wallet. and still have the security and anonymity as when you have a hard wallet?

Please don't make duplicate posts, and go off-topic with paper wallets.
I have already answered your question in other topic you created: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5334859

Like IRS confirmed, hardware wallets are very secure so they need help hacking them, but they are not perfect:
+plus: hardware wallets are more secure than software wallets on online computer, easier to use for most people.
-minus: They are not free and you need to pay for them; there is chance of malicious firmware and phishing websites, some of them have closed source code and can have hidden backdoor.
7756  Economy / Exchanges / Re: buying bitcoin to buy hard wallet on: May 04, 2021, 11:51:14 AM
I am thinking of going the paper wallet route. It seems like either if you have a hard wallet or nothing, the only thing that really matters is if you have your passphrase and private key, so it seems to me the hard wallet does not add anything, other than it makes it easier to buy  monero more securely and and anonymously.
You can go whatever route you want, and hardware wallet is keeping keys offline and it has nothing to so with purchasing any coins anonymously.

Could you let me know some of  the pros and cons of a papper wallet?

Sure, there are some advantages and disadvantages for paper wallets like with everything else:

+plus: Paper wallet is free and it can't get hacked if you store it in secure way; only owner of paper wallet is controlling keys if done correctly offline and without leaks
-minus: Paper can easily get destroyed in time, ink can fade and paper can burn; there are fake and malicious phishing paper wallet websites and codes; you generally can have only one address to use...

7757  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Charlie Munger hating on bitcoin on: May 04, 2021, 10:57:52 AM
Should anyone really trust and take seriously anything that 97 years old man (read Charlie Munger) with one leg in his grave has to say, and should we first question his state of mind when he talks about anything including Bitcoin?
He and his buddy Warren Buffet are probably angry they are late to invest in Bitcoin so they made his life mission to trash talk BTC it as long he is alive.
However successful Charlie Munger was with his previous investments it does not mean that he never made any mistakes and bitcoin was one of his biggest mistakes, but I bet some of his grandchildren already have Bitcoin.
7758  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Archiving threads on Bitcointalk on: May 04, 2021, 10:30:20 AM
My question is, does anyone know any way or service that allows to archive the entire thread at once (so as not to play each page separately)?

There is already something like that and it is called ninjastic.space made by forum member TryNinja , that is archiving everything in forum all the time.
There is also loyce.club made by LoyceV that is doing something similar, and you can easily access both of those service with community made (suchmoon and ibminer) BPIP browser extension.
With BPIP extension you are getting few more bonus surprises and forum improvements that is making life in bitcointalk much easier.

If you want to check all the ways you can archive bitcointalk posts yourself than you can check this Guide for Best ways to Archive Bitcointalk and other webpages.
7759  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Looking for founding members for a more anonymous bitcoin. on: May 04, 2021, 10:14:31 AM
Correct, it is not much effort with wasabi wallet, but it takes time (until the pool is ready) and any effort is more than no effort.

You can always use Chipmixer if you don't want to wait, you will get real bitcoin without paying any extra fees.
I don't want to trust Bitgo or someone else for keeping my Bitcoin, and I don't want to pay super high fees to move wbtc token on some other chain that can make it even more traceable and less private.
7760  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Looking for founding members for a more anonymous bitcoin. on: May 04, 2021, 09:23:51 AM
Exactly, centralized & controlled is a big issue - but WBTC (Wrapped BTC) on ETH also made a good solution with their custodian system, which I think is an excellent solution.

No it's not excellent solution, often times fees are much higher than on real Bitcoin chain and there is no mentioning in your diagram about this wbtc that is also centralized and controlled by some custodians.
