I upgraded my client yesterday and suddenly today I noticed I'm getting hit with a SYN flood attack.
Don't know if it's related but it's damn annoying. I've stopped my BTC client temporarily to see what happens.

I do know there are brute force password crackers that use OpenCL-based GPUs.
I guess that's one thing you give up by going to a specialized device like BFL. It's smaller and uses less power for the same hash rate as compared to a GPU but it can't be used for anything else.

Are these boxes good for anything useful besides BTC mining? I know the BFL web site says they're for crypto, but what specific applications would a single be good for besides BTC mining?

Also, it isn't going to speed up your TOR network accesses. All the box does is connect to the TOR network same as you would on your own computer.
TOR's slowness isn't due to hardware, it's due to latencies of passing through multiple relays.

Well, in women's defense I'll say that many of the attitudes that drive men crazy are biologically driven. Women are wired to seek safety and security in their relationships. This makes sense since they're basically helpless (think 40,000 years ago) when they have young children and need someone to protect them and their kids. In modern society money=security.

These FPGA boxes are cool, but has anyone here considered the impact to their mining business when the mining reward is cut in half? That's happening later this year at current mining rates. Something that occurred to me was regarding these specialized FPGA boards like the one from Butterfly Labs. You pay around $600 for a highly specialized device that generates around 800 MHash/sec. That's fine, except you can set up an equivalent performing GPU rig for about the same money (or less).
As others have pointed out, a GPU could be resold into the gaming market to at least recoup some of the investment. Who'd want to buy a used BFL box?
Add to the mix the fact that in less than a year the rewards of mining will be cut in half.
It's like what happened to the price of generators after Y2K.
