7961  Other / Politics & Society / Re: EndSARs: The movement for police reformed as a result of police brutality in NiG on: October 13, 2020, 07:33:14 AM
What are your take on this issue and how both the citizens and government can help resolve this problem causing discomfort among the youth of my country.
There is no other take on this than the Nigerian governments to desolve this deadly, blood sucking thives that are posing themselves as SARS. Normally, if cyber attackers have enough money to pay them, if they are paid, they will become the friend of the cyber attackers which we called Yahoo boys in Nigerian, but they are making life miserable for other citizens of the country. Even, the Nigerians in diaspora (abroad) are afraid to come home all because of this stupid SARS. I read a news about a Nigerian football that was extorted, how about celebrity child that was given car, all of them are being extorted by Nigerian SARS.

Nigeria itself is not making any sense, if the chairman of EFCC in Nigerian, Ibrahim Magu that is also tackling cyber attackers if found to embezzle millions of dollars and also seizing yahoo boys property and turning it into his own properties instead of governments property, is that a good leadership, it is just like thieves are collecting what thieves have already stolen from people. But SARS are worst, they also deal with innocents, it is not only about you having bitcoin transactions, they deal with anyone looking good and/or driving car.

SARS are wicked, as we heard federal government has desolved SARS, so shall in be, they were supposed to protect Nigerian citizens but they are not, killing harmless Nigerians that carry no gun or any harmful weapons. If you request for it, there are pictures of harmless Nigerians this SARS has killed, I can search for it online and post it here. They are life threaten, and they are no more wanted by Nigerians.

There was a friend I know that traveled to Ekiti (a state in Nigeria), this deadly SARS detained him, he is completely innocent but detained because he is looking good, he was unable to attend the marriage ceremony he came for all the way from Lagos and was detained in SARS custody, he was proving stubborn before he realized nothing could be done than to pay this threats (SARS) money. If they are not desolved, they will become more out of hand because they are already out of hand. All I wish them is hell because hell is a perfect place for thieves like Nigerian SARS.
7962  Other / Beginners & Help / The first-ever mining hardware marketplace just launched on: October 12, 2020, 09:39:15 PM
Asic Jungle has launched a beta version of what it calls “the first-ever mining hardware marketplace” for cryptocurrency mining hardwareThe company's CEO Artem Bespaloff told Cointelegraph that he has created a trusted platform for second-hand mining equipment that operates without any middlemen:

"[It's] the first and only online marketplace where buyers can interact directly with sellers through the platform and not have to use any brokerage services or Telegram channels (I call them 'sketchy' Telegram channels) because all sorts of things go on there. And we decided to create this ecosystem where buyers and sellers deal together between themselves."

It is one of forum's hidden pages and I listed it in a thread of mine Hidden pages/ features on the forum
Announcement from theymos is there
@tranthidung. Please, do not mind this, that link you posted contain only the link posted by the OP that contain IP logs of a month of members that are visiting Bitcointalk forum, it only seems like a repetition.
7964  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Have you been monitoring your bitcointalk activities ever? on: October 12, 2020, 05:41:22 PM
I do often think of it before, that if a hacker is trying to attack my Bitcointalk account, that it will be difficult for me to know, although I have signed a message using my Bitcointalk account and also make use of another user's account to quoted the signed message, but this can only help during when someone's account has been comoromised already, so to avoid account to be comoromised, what OP posted will be effective. As I clicked on the link given above, I was surprised to see my logs for certain duration of time, it is amazing, the OP post is very useful. Checking our logs daily will be good and recommended.

But, in addition, something always pop up on my mind, it will be good if admin can help us to let this forum to support 2 FA, this also can be an effective protection, having my Bitcointalk account on one device, and enable the 2FA app on another device will also help, to totally avoid hackers.
7965  Other / Politics & Society / Re: people dont understand vaccine trial dates on: October 12, 2020, 03:23:22 PM
c. if the vaccine does/doesnt cause and long term adverse illness/reaction
    (should get results 6months-2 years)
That means 2022 should be the perfect time for the phase 3 trial to be completed?

But do you think that will stop them from giving us the vaccine? With the amount of money invested, these vaccines will be marketed, even though the danger of the virus will have diminished considerably by then. Some countries may make it mandatory to get the vaccine, or they may ask you to get it for certain things, such as travel.
Nothing will stop them from giving the vaccines to the public world wide in order to enrish their pocket, but many people would have been infected and would have developed immune response naturally. But, no matter what, most of the vaccines would have passed the phase 3 by the middle of next year, 2021 or fourth quarter of next year and will be availabe to the public.

7966  Other / Beginners & Help / Belgian investors lost $12M to crypto & forex scams last year by clicking on ads on: October 12, 2020, 09:24:25 AM
Although, this is a crypto and forex scam in Belguim, the scammers are making use of malicious platforms to scam victims by using fake advertisements on social media featuring pictures of celebrities, directing them to provide information to bad actors. The scammers lured victims to invest high amount, they will also try to persuade victim to let them take control of the victim's computer remotely so to be able to make certain payment, promising high yield return. It is also etimated that fraudulent platforms offering investments in binary options, foreign exchange market products, and contracts for differences, it may represent a surge in the number of crypto fraud cases across Belgium.

Belgian authorities have taken preventive measures to tackle the problem. In February, the FSMA blacklisted more than 140 crypto-related fraudulent websites. However, the FPS estimated that investors in Belgium typically lose about $152 million to such scams each year, with most incidents going unreported.

Losses due to crypto scams are on the rise in Belgium.
https://cointelegraph.com/news/belgian-investors-lost-12m-to-crypto-and-forex-scams-over-the-summer

Although, according to cointelegraph, all these happened in Belgium, but I brought it here because it can happen in any country of the world. I blame people because they do not realize while they should have their privacy on the internet, why they should not also be clicking on ads be it legit or not, but ignorance is hard to deal with. Second, we should more put the blame on platforms advertising ads, google and social media are all at the front advertising these ads, which are not well monitored but helping scammers to advertise their ads too. Thirdly, blaming the governments should not be excluded, they are the first and most to be blamed, they are only trying to reduce what has been done and affected people, they do not like to prevent something from happening, due to the money these companies are paying the governments, governments allow them to be monetizing their sites, apps and search engines with ads which many of it are from scammers.

But if we can not control the government to enforce tight laws and regulations against the companies advertising, like, google, social media, and other companies displaying ads, we should help ourselves to have online privacy and not clicking on ads.

People, stop clicking on ads, they are more than deadly and be careful of scammers.
7967  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin light wallet with encrypted CONNECTION to the network on: October 12, 2020, 12:28:30 AM
- Android Electrum has encrypted connection to their servers but some connections are unencrypted (not sure what that means)
https://roll.urown.net/server/bitcoin/electrum-server.html
Electrum Server listens on TCP ports 50001 and 50002 for incoming connections. Port 50001 is for plain unencrypted connections and port 50002 is TLS encrypted. We allow only secured connections on IPv4 and IPv6.

But, with what I have noticed, server used to query history are of port 50002 , which is encrypted, although, it is based on what I have noticed on electrum wallet. You can also set the server not to change automatically.

I am on a public network and do not want the ISP to see what bitcoin addresses I look at
You have well been answered, using VPN will be the best option, to make it safe, paid VPN like ExpressVPN are better, using free VPN can create more risks than you can possibly think.
7968  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The purpose of signing in message of bitcoin wallets and digital signatures on: October 12, 2020, 12:00:25 AM
If you have gone through a thread on this forum before on the meta board, started by Tomatocage, you will be able to know the reason why we are signing a message. If you have used an address to sign a message before and post it on the thread, it will be good for another member to quote it with another account, so if your Bitcointalk account is compromised by hackers, you can be able to recover back your account if you prove the ownership of the address you signed, by using the same address to sign another message that can be verified. That means you have not done this yet, look for the thread on meta and sign a message, post it there and ask anyone to help you quote it.

Edit: I have found you the link:

7969  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [PROJECT] Run a pruned node on a salvaged drive. on: October 11, 2020, 12:27:43 PM
What you meant is to use bitcoin core as a full client wallet, there was a question on bitcoin technical support about the increasing in the memory required to download the blockchain in the bitcoin core full client wallet, although pruned version can be good but can not be useful as the full client in which the whole bitcoin blockchain will be downloaded from the scratch, especially when importing another private key which will not work in a pruned version of bitcoin core but definitely work on the full client version.

I will start the blockchain from scratch using public WiFi for the synchronisation
Public WiFi will not be good for this purpose, it is better to make use of data connection from trusted data provider, the reason is because connection from WIFi may not be secure and it can be a tool for hackers to compromise your computer.

What I know is that it is good to always backup the whole bitcoin blockchain so that it will not be needed again to download it when in need, for example, during damanged computer or lost files on computer. Your idea is good.
7970  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion about newbies on: October 11, 2020, 09:36:13 AM
I would like to propose a solution about these newbies that don't do anything than damaging and spamming the forum. Once a newbie creates a new topic, the moderation team must approve it first. I wouldn't suggest posts generally because there may be some honest newbies that face an issue. Just for their topics.
That will not be good enough, moderators like other members to see for themselves that a post is worthy of deletion before deleting it, if certain numbers of members have reported a post, it will be deleted by moderators certainly, this is the best approach. Even, as scam is said to not be moderated, not like scam posts that are reported, I have reported some of the scam posts before, and was later deleted by moderators. Also, there are many newbies joining the forum daily, you can not leave the work for only moderators, we too need to report (useless and scam posts) so that moderators can concentrate more on the reported ones but also trying to review others.
7971  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Block 21 hits digital-art record at Christie on: October 11, 2020, 08:24:39 AM
I have created a topic about this before, I like the artwork, but I noticed the artwork does not depict about bitcoin in a way someone can easily recognized it is related to bitcoin. The art is expensive and it will be getting more expensive.

Christie’s auction house has announced the sale of a digital portrait of the Bitcoin code for more than $130,000. It marks the first time a non-fungible token (NFT) was auctioned at a major auction house, and the price exceeded expectations.

According to the auction house, an unknown buyer purchased "Block 21," comprised of a physical piece of art and an NFT representing Satoshi Nakamoto for $131,250 at Christie's on Oct. 7 as part of its “Post-War and Contemporary Day Auction.” Bidding started at $22,000.

The artwork, created by Ben Gentilli with the Robert Alice project, is one of 40 creations in a series, and holds exactly 322,048 digits of Satoshi’s original Bitcoin (BTC) code. The series, titled "Portraits of a Mind", shows the cryptocurrency's 12.3 million digits of original code individually engraved and painted on 40 different circular panels stretching more than 50 meters in length.

A portrait of Satoshi Nakamoto, in 40 parts
The artist behind this painstaking process, Ben Gentilli of the Robert Alice project, has called this collective piece Portraits of a Mind. Described as a digital fingerprint carved out of paint, each of the 40 individual pieces contains a chunk of the original code. Taken together, they represent a global portrait of Satoshi Nakamoto—Bitcoin’s anonymous founder, who first released the cryptocurrency’s original code in January 2009.
“Bitcoin’s original codebase is like a historical document, and I wanted to celebrate it and preserve it in the same way as a document like the Magna Carta,” Gentilli told Decrypt. “But I also wanted to try and answer the question of how one might make a portrait of Satoshi Nakamoto, when there is no image of him.”

Portraits of a Mind, he argues, depicts Satoshi through his work. “For me, this work is a portrait of Satoshi, decentralized around the world, in the same way that Bitcoin itself is,” he explained.

“I wanted to try and answer the question of how one might make a portrait of Satoshi Nakamoto, when there is no image of him.”
Ben Gentilli

The works themselves are canvas discs, 50.59in in diameter, layered with suspended pigment, and graphite and aluminum paint, with each digit individually engraved. Dotted here and there are gold digits—a metaphor for mining—arranged in a constellation-like pattern of decentralization.

7972  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Be careful during use escrow service from the forum. on: October 10, 2020, 05:38:17 PM
I am not yet experienced or know much about escrow services, but imo, to make deals (buying, selling and use of escrow services) more official and transparent, this forum will be good for such deals, especially if the person is a stranger. There are many ways scammers can manipulate matters in a way someone can fall being scam victim. And, it should be appreciated that this is brought here which will create more awareness that anyone can fall for escrow scam, we need to be careful and be conscious of escrow scam activities that may be on our part.

Do not be shameful to ask for help or question about the forum
This forum can be very difficult to be understood by new members, if you have tried and know some part of it, you can ask anything you do not know and want answers for, our ranked members are happy to answer such questions. This happened to me when I was new here on the forum, I ask questions and I was well answered by ranked members. You can make use of beginners and help for that, or bitcoin technical support for anything related bitcoin wallet and transaction.
7974  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Store your bitcoin seed / private key safely (Water, Fire, Shock-proof) on: October 10, 2020, 09:59:28 AM
That's simply security through obscurity, and should not be relied upon to protect your seed phrase (or any information). It provides you a false sense of security as you think "Well, at least if they find it they might not immediately know what it is." Far better to instead focus on storing your seed phrase somewhere safe where it will not be found, rather than hoping someone doesn't know what it is when they do find it.

If you really want to store it in a way that if someone finds it they will not be able to access your coins, then the better options are to split your seed phrase or use a long and complex passphrase in addition.
What I have noticed is that common sense is enough to back up seed phrase, you are very right. I do not even have to buy any expensive material for back up when I can get what I can use to back up my seed phrase at home freely without it costing me nothing. Even a pencil and a paper is good if laminated, and the use of a metallic plates at home with the use of penenetating objcts like compass to input it on the metallic plate. Having three backup of different types is enough with good protection. How about the metallic part of a maticatical set, I can even input my seed phrase inside it with its compass or divider sharp ledge and be stored in a safe place free from anyone to access. There are many things we can think of in a way we will easily and freely back up seed phrase without spending no money on any back up. Having three of it has been the best for me, only what can not safe me of my backups are natural disasters, and of which my location is totally free from such,  bit in case, that is why I even still have to know the seed phrase on my head but of which said not to be recommended and well noted.

With what explained above and using shamir's secret sharing and/or with the use of passphrase will be good to avoid attackers and for safe protection of the backups. You are very right, common sense is what is required. But, we should also be conscious of the fact that too tight security can lead to loss of password, we should do it to the limit we will be able to access the backup all the time.

I hope this new season there will be meaningful competition for EPL, not just Liverpool and Manchester city. Too boring if only 2 clubs compete. even though the other teams are so amazing and have the best players. But if this season Liverpool win again, I'm still happy.  Grin
There is already meaningful competition going on, like last week, we all saw how big teams were won, especially how Aston Villa trashed Liverpool, it was a surprise. That was not all, Leceister City and Man United lost while Leeds City drew with Man City. The game has been so competitive since the beginning.
7977  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Don't reply to private messages from unknown people! on: October 09, 2020, 10:34:33 PM
Strangers are nothing more but strangers, but some people are too weak to allow strangers to lure them into sending bitcoin to them, this can happen on forums, and similar of such on social media. People need to be careful, scammers have tactics to seek for bitcoin in a way someone will become a victim. If a stranger is asking for bitcoin or introducing you into new business, be it of high or low profit, it is more likely a scam, someone should not be greedy for this and should avoid such scammers. So, not even on forums, but everywhere.

Use the below guild for electeum testnet mode,
https://bitzuma.com/posts/a-beginners-guide-to-the-electrum-bitcoin-wallet/#testnet-mode

Testnet Mode
Although Electrum supports Testnet mode, this feature isn’t available through the graphical user interface. Running Electrum in Testnet mode is not difficult, but the procedure varies by operating system.

Specifically, you’ll create an operating system-specific launcher. This launcher can be placed on your desktop or elsewhere. It will allow you to run Testnet Electrum whenever you double click it.

Before setting up an Testnet Electrum launcher, it’s essential to run Electrum at least once in Mainnet mode. That’s best accomplished by double clicking Electrum’s built-in launcher, or using your system launcher. This step adds essential files that Testnet Electrum will need to run.

Testnet on Windows
Copy the Electrum launcher on the desktop (right click, Copy). Paste a new copy onto the desktop (right click, paste). Rename the copy to “Electrum Testnet.”

Access the launcher’s properties (right click, Properties). Under the “Target” field append the following text: “ --testnet” (a leading space is required, and there are two dashes). Click OK.

To know about testnet mode for Mac OS, you can click the link below for more information.

7979  Other / Beginners & Help / Lightning network vulnerability discovered, upgrade immediately on: October 09, 2020, 06:58:06 AM
Vulnerabilities has always been common in lightning network, but this recent one has been fixed, it requires an upgrade in the node version, the vulnerability was found in the LND versions 0.10.x and below which was disclosed to the Lightning Labs team. An upgrade is needed, node operators will have to upgrade to versions 0.11.0 or higher as soon as possible in order not to be affected by the vulnerability.

Lightning network node operators running LND versions prior to the Oct. 1 version 0.11 upgrade have been urged to upgrade immediately after a vulnerability was discovered affecting LND versions 0.10 and below. The vulnerability was made public in an Oct. 9 announcement from Lightning engineer Conner Fromknecht, Head of Cryptographic Engineering at Lightning Labs. Fromknecht said: “While we have no reason to believe these vulnerabilities have been exploited in the wild, we strongly urge the community to upgrade to lnd 0.11.0 or above ASAP,” Few details have been revealed so far, with Fromknecht assuring that the vulnerabilities will be disclosed in full on Oct. 20.

All I can Comment for now is that merit system is really helping the forum, it helps the posts quality. And, there is nothing yet wrong with the merit system for now, let us leave this to the future if the merit system will continue working good, but as to what will happen, the merit system will always be working good as merit sources are giving only high quality posts merits.

About the issue of smerit being decaying, this is very good in my opinion, there are lots of posts that are worthy of merits that the smerits can be used for instead of letting it decaying.

Merit sources need to check their standard, it should not be too high in a way 10 or less out of 100 quality posts will be merited, and the standard should not be low in a way that low quality posts sould be given merit at all, but out of 100 quality posts, nearly all should be awarded merits in order to strengthen the good posters to post more quality contents, and I believe this will neither harm the merit system nor the forum.
