8143  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: background of most miners on: February 28, 2013, 02:31:12 PM
I guess I'd be defined as an unemployed home studying student close to being self-employed, bit confusing I know but that's the economy these days, Bitcoin's putting me on track much faster than I anticipated though because it lets me earn money! Cheesy Not just work for a hundred years to get a few thousand in paper that won't even get me a car.
8144  Economy / Speculation / Re: Pump 'n' Dump - Happening Now? on: February 28, 2013, 12:09:27 PM
I think that the prices are only of a serious concern to people who are trying to buy Bitcoins really, it's a bit like people who claim that a rising Chinese yuan is bad for everyone else, yeah, that's because you have crappy currencies that aren't worth anything so it will get more and more expensive as the real value of it is realised. If you only take Bitcoin it's going to be fine for you, if you only deal in conventional currencies then it's going to become increasingly more expensive to get Bitcoins this is why diversification is a really good idea but for me personally because Bitcoin just has too many benefits I'm probably going to take the plunge and only take them.

I'm not worried one bit Cheesy
8145  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Alternative voting systems on: February 28, 2013, 11:54:13 AM
I'm a big fan of Direct Democracy myself, the type they have in Switzerland, not because of any math based argument but purely because in that system if a politician tries to pass a law a citizen doesn't like that citizen can start a petition, if the petition reaches the threshold set then by law the law petitioned against has to stop. It's also quite well safe guarded because of course if a dick politician tries to sneak around this system and change the threshold to make it higher or get rid of the petition system altogether then citizens can of course stop it.

This to me is a much better system than electing dictators every few years who can just do what they want, a lot of times in the first past the post system you have everyone voting a person in and then of course they turn out to be an arsehole but people have a way of stopping them from passing laws while they're in office instead of just shoving them through with the buddies they've brought into parliament etc.
8146  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Price at $31.89 on: February 28, 2013, 01:48:37 AM
Is it bad that every time I look at this kind of stuff and see the Bitcoin prices I keep laughing like an evil super villain?
8147  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Unlocking the Potential: Women and Mobile Financial Services in Emerging Markets on: February 27, 2013, 11:16:53 PM
Yeah user friendliness is a pain in the arse right now with Bitcoin, good thing it's open source. I'm actually thinking of posting up some designs I'm thinking of software I'd like to see programmed for free because programmers most of the time are terrible at explaining things or making easy to understand interfaces lol.

Done it! Smiley
8149  Other / Off-topic / Re: Ill pay you 1BTC to buy the goldbar so I dont lose it on: February 27, 2013, 03:07:47 PM
There's only one conclusion you can draw from this thread and that is you guys have way too many Bitcoins if you can piss it away on stuff like this lol Tongue
8150  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My 2 Cents on: February 27, 2013, 02:48:56 PM
you should become an architect, since you seem to be good at making walls of text.

Translation: Wahhh! Big words scaring me! ;-;

Tongue but seriously it's good to take a balanced line of thinking with Bitcoin, definitely there's a trust problem with it, the number one argument against Bitcoin I've seen regularly used is that it can be easily used by criminals and while I can understand the nervousness about that there are people here who quite happily trade in Bitcoin without too much trouble. Be paranoid and be suspicious, I'm pretty sure though that more companies like Bitpay will be springing up and if you have your doubts about someone you could even ask them for escrow services which I think are likely to become the normal thing in Bitcoin.

That said, for the problems that Bitcoin has, the conventional paper currencies must have a hundred times more that I could rant on about in an entire thesis so I consider the risk that comes with Bitcoin worth it, price wise I suspect Bitcoin will stabalise over time as the volume of Bitcoins traded grows and people get used to it being around.
8151  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Unlocking the Potential: Women and Mobile Financial Services in Emerging Markets on: February 27, 2013, 02:32:39 PM
Good thing Bitcoin let's you password your wallet so people on your computer can't steal it eh? Tongue
8152  Economy / Economics / Re: Bernanke to embark on another round of quantitative easing? on: February 27, 2013, 12:24:11 PM
US Quantitative Easing tends to increase commodities prices, so this might will benefit the bitcoin price.

Fixed that for you Tongue Bitcoin is very much the opposite of the dollar in many respects, soon we will see who is correct and who is talking utter bullshit.
8153  Economy / Economics / Re: UK Downgraded from LOL to LMAO on: February 27, 2013, 12:22:32 PM
Don't worry, the 'Conservatives' are as useless at money management as Labour are in this country so they'll find a way to completely fuck everything up.

Oh no, another overpriced heap of plastic that I want nothing to do with being shoved in my face which will be obsolete yet again in a couple of years >_<

p.s. I fucking called this years ago, they'll be bringing out the Xbox 720 soon to compete

Simply if you start messing with taxes all your business can be shut down in days, and there is no simple answer how to deal with bitcoins anywhere.

If it weren't for the central banks it wouldn't be such a difficult thing to deal with because they cluster fuck everything they come into contact with and make it unnecessarily complex. I'm considering writing an email to Customs and Revenue about this and I'll see what they have to say about it but I'm not really expecting much.
8157  Economy / Goods / Re: Bitcoin Ink Stamps - .4 BTC - price reduction on: February 26, 2013, 01:01:34 PM
Why not include a stamp that just has the Bitcoin symbol on it by itself? I can see businesses finding that quite useful as a way of saying on letters and things like that whether they deal in Bitcoin or not.
8158  Other / Off-topic / Re: A government just passed a law to raid all bank accounts. on: February 26, 2013, 09:10:46 AM
Yawn.......
The Uk is trying to pass laws so that the Tax people can go into your house to valuate your goods and then charge tax on them.
This is despite tax already having been paid.

Are you serious ?

Dont you pay a consumption tax already in the UK ?

Yep, it's called VAT from what I know, I'm technically paying taxes to the government on everything I get in pounds despite only being 21.

Also, as anyone capable of mathematics will tell you I suspect even if you got every single bit of cash you could from big corporations there still probably wouldn't be enough to pay off the debt even with companies as big as Apple, people think it's the magical solution but the real problem is the money printing as most of us know already.
8159  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: France Is Planning To Prohibit Cash Payments Over €1,000 on: February 25, 2013, 01:02:52 PM
It's not enough to say "tax evasion is high". A good government should:

1) Prove it with data.
2) Show that the area where evasion is high, is actually a significant contributor to overall tax revenues.
3) Provide a convincing calculation of the costs of implementing the proposal.
4) Show that the revenue gained is significantly higher than the costs.

In this case I am skeptical they're doing any such calculations.

Ohhhh, tax evasion is going to be high once everyone knows how to use Bitcoin Cheesy
8160  Other / Beginners & Help / Newbies, beware blackmailers and propaganda merchants as well as scammers on: February 25, 2013, 12:26:42 PM
Now I'm sure you guys have all seen on these boards the people who will scream out the name of a scammer and tell you to stay away from them. I've seen an increasing number of posts from randomnamewithnumbers1235461 types who are utterly convinced they have either been scammed or that something is a scam, or that you should sell Bitcoins and so on without giving any actual facts to back up what they say. These are people I will label as either blackmailers or people who want to spread their own form of propaganda in order to get you to do something that will benefit them.

You've heard of conspiracy theorists yes? Well the real conspiracy theorists out there completely make up bullshit in order to try and make you believe something either by outright fabricating photographs or just making shit up and passing it off as fact.

There are people out there who are exactly like this but they do it in a less direct way to benefit them. you have people who blackmail people who are selling goods in order to get money from them or ruin their reputation and then you have people who want to spread propaganda in order to scare you away from Bitcoin or for that matter people who are desperate to keep the difficulty the same or to get people to sell so they can buy more Bitcoins. If you want a real life example I suggest checking out CNBC so you know what the hell I'm on about, on that channel everyone is trying to sell you something and give you investment 'advice' that is basically them trying to get you to buy stocks that they own so the price goes up. You'll have such and such CEO of irrelevant tech company come along to try and get people to buy the stock they own and convince people that the company is doing fine despite never giving any numbers or proper profit/loss reports. My favourite one that I remember was how all the stock traders including the ones off CNBC were ranting about Apple despite how badly it was performing and how it had no real new product that would get them doing well again. I just don't watch these news channels any more though because they just piss me off to no end because of how blatantly they lie to people, you can get all the information you need on the internet usually.

Unfortunately a lot of this kind of thing can come down to experience in dealing with these kind of people but questioning everything even what I say will help you a lot and even with people who don't look like scammers remember the old saying "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". As for the people who rant about how bad Bitcoin is and how much they hate it, they're pretty harmless I think, you wouldn't want them in office, but they aren't trying to manipulate the market in their favour and make you lose money.

Various examples I've seen:

. Random poster tries to convince you the Bitcoin price is going to fall, usually wants a bunch of people to panic sell and cause the price to drop slightly so they can make a slightly bigger profit

. Random poster keeps screaming that a person they bought from is a scammer but doesn't provide any evidence of their sale or order, keeps spamming the topic and just keeps screaming constantly and arguing with everyone, will usually use capslock and exclamation marks to emphasize how bad the accused is

. Random poster will throw a fit after not having been replied to by tech support within a day despite how everyone knows Bitcoin is experimental and a lot of companies these days are start ups, even then big mega corporations take a while longer than a day to respond usually

. Random poster picks fight with a seller who's been accused of scamming and another Random Poster rushes to defend them

One obvious one that has been around in the beginning I think:

. Random poster wants to buy Bitcoins through reversable payment systems like Paypal, what happens here is they'll ask the seller to send Bitcoins after giving them money and then once the Bitcoins come through they'll reverse the transaction and get there money back leaving the person who sold the Bitcoins out of money

I hope this helps the people out there who have no experience with this sort of thing, the experienced posters around here can feel free to add more stuff if they find anything. Be suspicious of everything and question everything, I'm sure some of this might seem mad but it's helped me a lot of times in the past even in dealing with people when it didn't involve money. I'm not saying you can't trust anyone, more that you should find people who are trustworthy instead and this sometimes might mean having a bad experience in order to find out. You won't be able to completely avoid these situations all the time but you'll have a much easier time of dealing with the majority of the stuff that's out there.
