861  Economy / Lending / Re: [Wanted] MTUSD loan, 1%/mo, BTC collateral, Up to $10K on: January 25, 2013, 01:48:38 PM
sorry for go off topic (kinda) but I'm curious why you can only offer interest to non jewish people ?

I'm jewish.. which is why i am wondering...
I try to follow the halakha where possible, and it forbids interest-bearing loans from one Jew to another.
862  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Just bought my ticket for Bitcoin 2013 in San Jose! on: January 25, 2013, 10:43:44 AM
Hope its better than the excruciatingly embarrassing ones of the past.
this will be the first real one is the US right?
Previous conferences are infamous for having been organized by people who have since gone into disrepute - NYC by Bruce Wagner, Prague with involvement from Bitcoin consultancy, London by Nefario and Bitcoin consultancy. But I think all of them were actually quite good (and the first real conference in US is definitely NYC Aug 2011).

1. They have all been reasonably organized, and better with each conference.
2. The organization is just an excuse. It's an important excuse inasmuch as it's what brings people together, but it's actually meeting other people from the community that is important. And we've done plenty of that.

Edit:
The SAME material covered at these conferences can be found in:

1. this forum (free)
2. Bitcoin Magazine ($8.88...wow)
3. Google (free)
4. Youtube videos (if we're lucky...also Free)
There's your problem, right there. You think conferences are about "material". The material is an excuse to get people to meet (and to get press coverage, too).

internet, skype, facebook, youtube, twitter, etc, etc, etc.
!= Meeting in person.
863  Economy / Lending / [Wanted] MTUSD loan, 1%/mo, BTC collateral, Up to $10K on: January 25, 2013, 09:23:14 AM
I would like a loan of up to $10,000 Mtgox USD. I am offering 1% interest per month.

I will provide an equivalent amount of BTC as collateral. (The exact amount can be slightly higher or lower depending on our respective reputabilities.)

If the BTC price changes we can negotiate an increase or decrease in collateral to keep it roughly equivalent.

I prefer at least $4,000 per individual lender to reduce overhead.

The loan term is for now indeterminate but we can agree on a minimum term if needed, and you can withdraw anytime with a 1 week prior notice.

I can only offer interest if you are not Jewish.

Since I am highly reputable and offering both collateral and good interest, I think it's a very good deal.

Background:

Bitcoin is still booming in Israel and despite my efforts I simply can't wire funds fast enough to handle all the load. Having a larger reserve would allow me to profit from the business while maintaining my desired BTC position.

Over the longer term I will seek more sustainable funding options but right now I need some reasonably fast way to increase my capacity, and can certainly afford 1% monthly for that.
864  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Israel Bitcoin Meetup Group on: January 24, 2013, 03:48:14 PM
Do you have any summary of this past talks presentations?
"Dorit Ron will present her work with Adi Shamir on "Quantitative Analysis of the Full Bitcoin Transaction Graph" in ceclub in January.
http://ceclub.technion.ac.il/past.html
I guess I could obtain one (I'm in contact with both Dorit and people from the Technion), but AFAIK basically the paper itself could be considered a summary of the talk (http://eprint.iacr.org/2012/584.pdf).
865  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Short presentation about Bitcoin (technical focus) on: January 24, 2013, 03:03:22 PM
For the January 2013 meetup I have prepared a presentation "What is mining?" - https://bitcoil.co.il/What%20is%20mining.pdf.
866  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Israel Bitcoin Meetup Group on: January 24, 2013, 02:33:11 PM
I will be giving a talk about Bitcoin in the Haifa Linux club in the Technion, on Monday February 4th, at 18:30.

The first part of the lecture will be a general introduction to Bitcoin. The second part will be a technical explanation of how Bitcoin and the blockchain work.

The lecture will be slightly adapted to the terminology of the free software community.

You can find more information and updates on the Haifa Linux club website.

867  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Blockchain and shares on: January 24, 2013, 01:13:32 PM
Miners find hashes, which are 256-bit numbers (from 0 to 115792089237316195423570985008687907853269984665640564039457584007913129639935).
For a hash to be valid, it needs to be lower than the target.

The "maximum target" is 0x00000000FFFF0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 in hexadecimal, or 26959535291011309493156476344723991336010898738574164086137773096960. This corresponds to difficulty 1. The chance for a hash to be lower than the max target is roughly 1 / 4295032833.

If the difficulty is D then the target is max target / D. For a hash to become a valid block it needs to be lower than the target, the chance for that is 1 / (4295032833 * D).

Traditionally, shares have been hashes lower than the max target (difficulty 1). Every hash would have a chance of 1 / 4295032833 to become a share, and a share would have a chance of 1/D to become a block. These days, to reduce overhead, shares of arbitrary difficulty d are used, so a hash has 1 / (4295032833 * d) chance to be a difficulty-d share, and a share has a chance of (d/D) to be a block.

I haven't given this thread any love in a while, and I'm not sure if now is the time that I start, but...

This is a good place to announce that Ron Gross, aka ripper234, has joined Bitcoil as a partner.

I've known Ron for almost two years and I'm looking forward to leveraging his dedication, Bitcoin enthusiasm and skills which complement my own to bring Bitcoil and Bitcoin in Israel to the next level.
869  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] PureMining: Infinite-term, deterministic mining bond on: January 22, 2013, 08:25:31 PM
I checked, the coupon payments were fine AFAICT, there was an error only in my posts about them.

I've paid out coupons for blocks 216383-217391. This post will be updated with details of all coupon payments since the GLBSE shutdown.

I want to verify that coupons before the GLBSE shutdown were paid correctly, but I don't currently have the data for that. Can anyone verify that coupons up to 201599 (as shown in http://bitcoinpuremining.com/) were paid correctly?

This is a good place to boast the most successful meetup to date by far, with over 100 people (I think about 130).

Also, theymos was kind enough to create a subforum for Hebrew, and also configure it to use right-to-left by default.

I would like to report we've had an amazing meetup. I think there were about 130 people (6 times as many as last time). I was worried there might not be enough room but Google were kind enough to connect the two lecture halls to make a large one. I think things went more or less smoothly (though I'll need to see the video to know exactly how badly I screwed up).

Videos and photos should follow.

ניסיתי להעתיק את התוכן מהגוגל גרופ, אבל זה לא יוצא טוב, במקום זה פשוט אפנה אתכם לשם

https://groups.google.com/d/msg/bitcoin-il/Zstbhc1uJNE/PdfdHJnKjqwJ

Looks like ASICs will finally be with us: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=137534.0

Does this mean any change of plan for the bond? (eg forced buy back)

EDIT: I ask because at some point soon the time you spend on the bonds will be worth more than the bonds themselves.
Eventually yes. I'll wait until it is clear that the future output will be insignificant. I'll also try to offer a new series based on CC before discontinuing this one.

I tried to do a summary of the coupon payments so far and I found some inconsistencies. It's possible that some coupons were missed.

I need to go over it all again and I prefer to do it when I'm not rushed. I hope to have more time on Tuesday and then I'll pay anything that's missing and also the coupons accrued in the past week.
880  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why is there a penny bot? on: January 18, 2013, 06:17:43 AM
There is a robot that executes very small trades apparently to astroturf the mtgox last trade price.  My question is why would someone spend perfectly good money to do that?

...
I was thinking there would be a service by now that one could pay and it would attempt to raise the best bid.   Maybe someone has done this and that's what you are seeing.

I get your point, but this penny bot looks to me like it's making the last trade look as low as possible.  I just can't think of a situation where this would be good for someone. After some thought, maybe this is Satoshi Dice keeping their BTC exposure to a minimum in real time.  If so, pretty cool demonstration of the technology.
The lesson is - don't use last price. It is a bad indicator of the current value for several reasons, this being one of them.

Much better is to take some value (e.g. 100 BTC), see how much it costs to buy 100 BTC with the current depth table, how much is obtained by selling 100 BTC, and take the average.
