Well one of the big multipools agreed to leave CATcoin alone maybe we can ask the others? Like middlecoin and hashcows to leave us be for 3 days or something? Maybe they can find it in their hearts!  Kiss

Hashcows agreed to leave CAT alone for a few days, I don't think Middlecoin has even been contacted yet though.

Besides I doubt Middlecoin would leave us alone.

This is the fundamental problem that the fork didn't fix: until there is enough constant hash to make the effect minimal, multipools are going to cause huge difficulty swings by jumping in when the difficulty is low, mining out all the blocks, pushing the diff up, and jumping out. We only have to mine 36 blocks now to get through the high diff, but we don't get many of the easy ones for all that work.

Until the net hashrate is too big for a multipool to significantly effect (which means 20+ GH/s), the difficulty NEEDS to depend on more than just the last 36 blocks. The 36 block retarget is great, but the new difficulty should be calculated from the last 2016 block times so that fast 4x diff swings dont happen.

Under your proposed algorithm, what would happen, if the difficulty appears to be too high for the value of the coin over an extended period of time (i.e., the coin sits near the bottom of profitability lists), so it keeps reducing difficulty inch by inch by means of the 2016 block average, then one day, the difficulty got low enough, that it climbs up to the middle of the profitability list - then for unrelated reasons - maybe Catcoin gets some press - the price of Catcoins gets driven up to double or triple the price from increased demand - and now Catcoins are at the top of the profitability charts - massive hash power gets directed onto the coin? Does this mean we may have to go through 1,000 blocks or so of very rapid block generation (e.g., once every 10 seconds), until the 2016 block average starts to move the difficulty up? Would such a scenario not represent a rapid inlation and influx of 50,000 newly minted CATs being dumped into the exchanges? Also, once the difficulty rises to the point where it is no longer at the top of the profitability charts, and the 50,000 CATs being dumped in the exchange causes the prices to drop, and the massive hash power gets directed elsewhere, would we not be back to having very slow block times (e.g., every 30 minutes or an hour), until the averages can get caught up, perhaps in another 1,000 blocks?

If you see it playing out differently, please describe how you see it playing out.

This actually is quite an articulate way of describing exactly the issues and "extreme situations" I was concerned about. I see it playing out exactly like that, yeah the diff would lower or raise every 36 blocks, but in tiny fragments rather than jumps, even if they are necessary jumps. This could in turn grossly affect the profitability of the coin, and could lead to huge surges and quiet periods of hash. Etblvu1 hit this one right on the head I think.

Unrelated: I've made contact with the Catcoinz Facebook page owner and he has agreed to hand the page over to me, at least for now, and I will in turn either do the content myself, hand it over to another member, or remove the page depending on what the community wishes. Unfortunately I don't see Catcoinz (with a z) being a page that is taken particularly seriously or professionally, so we may just have to turn it into an obvious unofficial page while the other one is made more official. I'm open to suggestions from the community on this.
I was even thinking that it might be best for new altcoins to change difficulty block by block. That way the multipools will have a real job of trying to pile in on easy block periods. I can imagine it's not workable mathematically but it's a thought. Keep everyone guessing. Miners committed to that particular altcoin won't care about difficulty fluctuations.

This is the state of cryptos at this moment in time. The waits we have to put up with are TRULY AMAZING, but I guess they rewards can be amazing as well. I have a love/hate relationship with Cryptsy. I now do most of my trading on CoinedUp.

CoinedUp is not bad but some people hate it with a vengeance. It's good for the newer ALTs. Try and work 1-2 days in advance (I know it sounds impossible). That way you get less frustrated.

I say again: Crypto trading ain't for pussies. It's for cats! Bye bye pussy. You won't be missed. You've already lost 2.5 BTC. Being nice, I would say hold on to your BTC... Somehow I see you losing a whole lot more with your trading strategies.

One day you're going to make a bad trade and lose a lot of money. I hope people treat you with a little more respect than you treat others, because nobody's going to sympathise with a lowlife who takes pleasure in other people's misery.

Of the two of you, Pussy seems richer to me.

No amount of money is going to stop you from being a dick.

Off for the night now, just popped in after seeing seeing Tribesman acting like a petulant child who just won a musical chairs contest. Pathetic.

I've taken many losses trading cryptos, and I've also made many gains. What I didn't do was go to the coin thread and start cussing when I took on a loss. They were MY decisions. I learned to live with them.

I'm only a dick to those who make me take off my trousers.

And pussy, I DOUBT you'd make a sound if you saw me in person, so shhh...

This cat it is just crazy, what a roller coaster ride it has been, started mining from the start , gave up mining after my pool did not pay out, then started mining it again, dumped all my cats after I seen the difficulty adjustment trouble coming when middlecoin started to mine it, I knew it was going to be stuck and the high difficulty forever unless it would be hardforked to adjust the difficulty, but that could cause the coin to get de-listed from the exchanges so i panicked and just dumped them all. and now I am back in, just bough a bunch of cheap cats at cryptsy. and I am going to mine them again, what the best pool at the moment folks ?
I'm on teamcatcoin.com.

This thread is the 5th most viewed thread in the entire crypto announcement subforum and the 3rd most replied to.... and rising.

On this episode of I'm Not Surprised, watch as I am indeed not surprised.
You should have been here for the launch. I've only shitted one pair of my pants tonight. It is branded a success!

 Huh

IF YOU ARE USING CATPOOL.IN PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THERE IS NO CASH OUT OPTION - CHECK FOR YOURSELF. BE SAFE!

Huh

Hmmm...
I'm a bit worried about CATPOOL.IN. There's no cash out option. How come?
And my confirmed balance has been over the threshold for over 30minutes now. Should I be worried?

come mine at http://teamcatcoin.com so you can relax and not worry about such things! we are in this for the long run!
Thanks. I'm already back there now. Teamcatcoin is my main pool (mined lots of CAT there) but with all the fun and games tonight I wasn't sure if you were on your own fork until you were put on the list. I have some CATs confirmed on Catpool.in but there's no way of getting them out if catpool don't release them.

There must be a reason why CATPOOL.IN has removed the cash out feature on their pool
 Huh
Removed from http://catcoins.biz for now :<
Good thing. Best to be safe. I'm resisting posting in big red letters for a few hours!  Cheesy

Was just having some fun trying to write code that interacts with the coind application.

This page will automatically give out 1 CAT every hour to 1 lucky person:
http://69.90.132.234/game.php?coin=CAT

Just enter your CAT address and get 1 entry.

I've loaded this up with a day's worth of coins to get it going. If you think it's cool and want it to keep running just send a few coins to the address at the bottom of the page.

When it runs out of coins it will automatically turn itself off.

If someone has a cool subdomain they want to point at it, go for it!

Enjoy!

Hey. Finally a faucet! Well..kinda..  Cheesy

Can you make a seperate thread for this? I'll be happy to throw a couple of Cat in. I'm sure there's someone in here with a decent catcoin domain.

Can you also code it to display the total pot?
Agreed. Excellent site!

Your hypothesis only has merit if you assume miners are a coordinated entity. They are not. There are too many miners for it to oscillate. They'd all be competing with another other. It would just smear out, or the dips would be low.

They'll all be waiting for the difficulty to lower, and none of them will pick the same time to jump in. There's a limit to how low it would drop until opportunism kicks in.

That's just a simple software problem. Miner-dumper coders will sooner or later figure out how to write a program to watch the blockchain and switch into mining at the precise moment to maximize accumulating cheap Catcoins, and stop mining the coin, just as the high difficulty phase kicks back in - and also do the same for the other hyper-adjusting altcoins. I suspect this kind of program is already written, but being hoarded by miner-dumpers who think they have a trade secret on easy money mining, but it will become widely distributed soon, and the instant switch-on instant switch-off effect will become more pronounced. Miner-dumpers are after maximum profit, and this relatively simple logic would accomplish maximizing profits. The only solution to this is to fix the perverse incentive that is coded into the coin code, to engage in this behavior. If this is not going to be done, then loyal miners will see mediocre profits, miner-dumpers will see Catcoin as yet another useful-idiot type coin to mine and dump with zero loyalty, and we have lost the uniqueness among altcoins.

At least right now, despite the very long confirmation times, cheap catcoins are not being replenished to the miner-dumpers, months of scaricity (despite slow confirm times), would have I'm sure driven prices back up, to the point where more mining would have been attracted. And as long as we were collectively willing to put up temporarily with very slow confirm times, we could have used the time to strategize on how to normalize difficulty (with a loyalty credit type modification - or just some organized coordinated effort). But now we will just have a rapid mix of too slow and too fast mining times, perhaps too fast for most people to notice, but miner-dumpers can and will seize upon it., and more coins will be mined and dumped than mined and held.

Now we're in conjecture territory. If everyone's watching to jump in at a difficulty level of their choosing, then it all comes apart by whoever "bids" at the highest difficulty. That's the opposite of a price dumping strategy to sell quickly and cheaply.

I don't think anyone can predict what's going to happen next. If they could then the price would either be crashing or soaring. The fact that it isn't really says that nobody is sure, as there are people on either side of the fence. I enjoy hypothesising what will happen, but I don't think we'll really know until it happens.

WE WILL GO TO THE MOON!!

It is always about the $ value. It's the reason miners will come back, the reason hash rate will grow. Short term gain may affect future performance. I'm neither for or against the fork. I just hope everyone's doing this with their eyes open.
