Update:

Exchanges where KOBO can be traded soon after launch:
https://btcpool.exchange/
https://yobit.net/

I've also contacted the other exchanges.

Unfortunately the Android wallet will not be available for launch (it's being rebuilt). I'm hoping it'll be available from Wednesday 11th Feb (or sooner). This doesn't affect PoW. Apologies to anyone who was hoping to use the Android wallet on launch. I was hoping to be using one, but these things happen.

I've also submitted the code for re-verification by Coins Source. I'm hoping to hear back from them later today.

Last night I had a very strange dream: I was on Kobocoin's World Conference and Thetribesman was the speaker. Forum was full of geeks and investors.

I don't remember what he was talking about, but he seems serious and excited  Cheesy
Lol. Was I sweating as well?

Yeah... was very Steve Ballmer's style xD
Well I'll make sure the aircon's at full blast at the next Kobocoin World Conference then. Much hot air!

Seemingly a stupid question: but what miner can we use to mine for this coin? Can we use our BitCoin hardware miners for this?
Check here:

Another issue:

Seems nothing is working on port 5057?

Dude, the coin isn't launched yet...  Grin

Also, for sgminer, there are more than one editions. Most of them working with the argument "-k bitblock" or "-algorithm bitblock"
Download:

Yes, I use -k bitblock. Or "alogrithm" : "bitblock" when I'm using a conf file.

Launch confirmed for Saturday 7th February, 2015, 07:00 GMT (London, UK)
Launch is to be held on twitter only (@kobocoindev)

(Unfortunately, the Android wallet may not be available for launch day. I will confirm either way by Friday)

Looks great.my bubba will be ready @ launch
Happy mining! Kobocoin will be cloud mining using Suprnova pool. My Bubba will be solo mining (then pool mining) till it's last remaining GPU fails (I thought I had 2 good GPU's but another one is sick).

Did you try switching gpu's to ensure it's not a broken pci-e slot?

Try to run one by one and check what happens.
Tried them both. It runs fine for about 15mins but as soon as I start mining the temps and rpm show there's a problem.
what cards do you have? i have a gigabyte 280x BF edition that runs @ 89-93 celcius all the time.when it was ne w it was a little cooler, cant get all the dust out.
the 280x from gygabyte not BF edition runs alot cooler
and what algo you mining?

I had 3 MSI 7950's Twin Frozr. I'm using sgminer 5.1/bitblock. The temps should be around 69C but the sick GPU gets up to 90C in 5-10 mins. Also, the software disables it as sick. You can see it's sick as well. One fan is sticking at startup. The dead GPU had 2 stuck fans. It wasn't even registering at the OS level. The single GPU still mines OK. I'm getting 1.2Mhs out of it (sometimes).
maybe if you lower engine and memclock a little to keep it under 90 it would still work.could be a thermal problem.
7950 and 280 are both tahiti core i believe.
but it solved my problem
No joy. The fan is stuck. It's not even spinning up.

Hope that goes some way to answering your question(s).

Thanks for the thorough and thoughtful answer.

It's interesting that you bring up the issue of the project being "admirable", and I see your point.  I was meaning it more in the general sense of it being admirable for a crypto to have meaningful, real-world goals, given how many essentially pointless coins we've seen, but that the sentiment is so common probably also betrays a certain naive condescension among those unfamiliar with Africa (myself included).  We so often hear about both micro-finance and Africa in the context of humanitarian work that there might be a tendency to think about Kobocoin in similar terms, which, as you say, misses the point.

Anyway, I can see that you have a plan and the qualifications to give it a chance at success.  Again, best wishes, and I'll be watching the progress with interest.
Thanks. Sorry if I went on a bit but I'm glad you got the point of it all.

This looks like the best coin of the week, as long as you get it out this week.
Very timely post.

Unfortunately the launch has to be provisionally moved to Saturday 7th February at 07:00 GMT.

Reason: There is a transaction fee set at the protocol level. The coin is being rebuilt (to remove the transaction fee), re-tested, and re-certified before it's launched.

I've been promised that the source code and wallets (Linux, Windows, Mac) will be ready for this Thursday and the new block explorer should follow soon after. In my opinion that's too close to launch. I want to get the new code back to CoinsSource so they can verify that nothing other than transaction fee has been changed. I then want to have the block explorer online before launch day. This rebuild also means that the Android wallet might be delayed.

Rushing around on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with last minute details (and getting the coin re-certified etc) all sounds very exciting and stuff, but it's best to reschedule the launch and make sure everything's ready.

Apologies for the delay but the issue has to be resolved.

If you do well as a computer engineer you'll be able to afford to have your own plane and fly whenever you want, rather than having to stick to a flight schedule.
Also, successful people with a private pilots license are way cooler than airline pilots.

I was hoping to confirm the launch for next Saturday, but I don't have everything I need yet. I'm sure everything will be completed and ready for the launch in the next 2/3 days. If there's any issues I'll post an update with details of the delay.

National coin? Isn't it the game of 2014?
It's not really a national coin. It's a coin for a region based on the largest economy in that region. I know what you mean about 2014 and national coins. I can only say that it isn't the case here. We're not looking to be endorsed by any nation.

Kobocoin is open to anybody. We're hoping the masses of people in Africa who currently use mobile payment facilities will see kobocoins as a viable alternative to what they're currently using and adopt it. The tx fees of the current services are as much as 60%. Great service, but expensive, and with gatekeeper hurdles. Crypto technology can make a difference.
If you can make KOBO<->USD/EUR, I trust you.
KOBO<->BTC, I don't.

How can people do business with a coin needs 2 steps exchange, why they don't use BTC?

With the mobile wallet it's your decision. The image below shows a mobile wallet with USD as the default pairing.

You can choose your preferred default pairing from the list, and also scroll through the list to compare values. If you download a wallet for any crypto listed on the exchanges you'll see that they all have this default ability.
