921  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Zcoin (XZC) - Implementing Zerocoin technology for financial privacy on: December 22, 2016, 02:16:55 AM
Please update to the latest version here:
https://github.com/zcoinofficial/zcoin/releases/tag/0.1.5

Basically the identity of the 2nd initial investor has been confirmed but has chosen to remain anonymous. Although Poramin has never directly received the funding from him, we believe that it is fair and the investor will be an asset to the project as it grows. We thank the investor for his understanding.

So all initial investors and the new investor are inside this version (not including Gary) and we believe we can move forward with this project to realise its full potential.

Note that despite Poramin receiving relatively very little funding thus far we have achieved fully working Zerocoin functionality (which in itself has already been modified quite substantially for performance) and MTP development is still on track. Once the dust and the politics settles down we believe this project can continue with renewed vigor.

Our team is already being built and fleshed out as I write this announcement. If anyone has good dev skills, we're looking for more devs to join us. We're good on the web dev end already.

With the influx of new funds and the new team we now have a strong funding base and a strong team to move the project forward.

Bittrex is allowing wallet withdrawals now if anyone of you wants to get your coins off the exchange.

Thanks to Wolf0 for making this possible.

@ERossin:

It depends how u define who the 'owner' is. Is the person who wrote all the code and co-founder of the coin the owner? Or the person who entered into all the agreements with investors and received all the initial funding for the coin, the owner?

It's me Reuben and I'm speaking on Poramins behalf Smiley I have been controlling this thread since I took the community manager position. To go into the details of the split would involve a lot of public mud flinging so after speaking to Gary,  we agreed not to do that.

The respective slacks are always there for people to read and make their own conclusions and a lot of info is out there already for people who really want to know.

Without getting into personal attacks or specifics in the spirit of keep things civil:

There's been a major disagreement between the two co-founders of the coin Poramin Insom (Lead Dev and Co-Founder) and Gary Le (Co-Founder) as to the direction of the coin and as to how funding is being utilised.

Poramin has done 100% of the coding for Zcoin and will continue to maintain Zcoin at the current github at (https://github.com/zcoinofficial/zcoin). The new website will be at zcoin.finance, the @zcoinofficial twitter at https://twitter.com/zcoinofficial and the BCT thread and Telegram chat room will remain the same.

Gary has started his own Github of the coin forked from Poramin's version at (https://github.com/zcoinproject/zcoin) and will retain control of the Twitter @zcoinproject, Reddit and Zcoin.tech domain.

The differences between the two for the moment will be in as to who the founder's reward is distributed to. Further details can be obtained from our slack at https://zcoinofficial.slack.com and get yourself an invite at http://invite.zcoin.finance:3000/

All coins prior to the fork will be recognized by both Poramin's and Gary's versions of Zcoin so if you maintain both wallets, you will get coins in both. As to who will the exchanges and pools will recognize, that is yet to be seen and we will keep you posted on updates. I understand that Gary's version will contain some modifications as well to his founder's reward from the existing one so exchanges and pools cannot just be stagnant with the current version and will have to make a choice between the two.

If you wish to support Poramin's version of the coin, you can obtain the updated release at https://github.com/zcoinofficial/zcoin/releases.

Thank you for your patience in the matter and I will continue to update you guys on any news here! I know it's a frustrating and tough rode but we believe some short term sacrifices are necessary for the long term growth of the coin. Thank you!

Thanks for the support. Do note that Step 6 is particularly tricky so just a little heads up on that it may take a longer time compared to the other steps.

Step 5 should be completed soon.

Is the 20% dev tax activated now? Are the addresses where those funds go public (without looking into the source code)? Devs hodling or dumping with miners?

has been from the start.
these addresses are available to view in any zcoin block explorer.

zcoin is just a clone of moneta, which was a clone of zerovert.
i'm guessing the original dev of zerovert (who does deserve props for actually writing the first coin to utilize libzerocoin) wasn't happy with the profit so he triple dipped.

roger ver is across 95% of this too; search his name and moneta/zerovert on google.

i've got to say guys, all of this can be discovered by exercising your personal right to think for yourself.

Depends how you describe 'clone'. Zerovert, Moneta/Zcoin are all by Poramin anyway.

Zerovert (closed source and had huge performance issues) and was rejected by the Vertcoin community. This was not investor backed and as a result he did not want his work to be cloned but it was a chicken and egg scenario since to gain credibility you need to opensource it. (https://github.com/zcoinofficial/zcoin/wiki/FUD check here for more details)
Moneta (never launched, it was launched as Zcoin).

So it's basically Zerovert > Moneta/Zcoin.
Roger Ver invested when it was named Moneta. When Moneta was launched it was launched as Zcoin.

The priority right now is to finish MTP development and build up our team. Poramin is a very hard working core dev as can be evidenced from the github progress although he is facing some serious family health matters which required him to be away for a week or so but his focus has to be on core dev, rather than the other supplementary portions which are also very important such as GUI, pool software and mining software which is why we are trying to outsource this work while looking for more devs to join us on board. We suspect this would only happen when people recognize that we're not a Zcash fork, that we're here to stay and that our team is serious in making this a long term project which time will be the judge of that.

Note we're only 2+ months old and launched with our core features in a working condition which is more that can be said about many other projects with much more substantial investments so that I believe speaks for itself in deciding whether our launch was rushed.

New mtp updates has been pushed to github:   Grin

https://github.com/zcoinofficial/mtp

Yup, Poramin is working super hard to get this done. Some of the issues that is holding back faster implementation is that Argon is written in C but Bitcoin is in C++.

Hello all, i'm new to mining, i want to ask you something. If I want to mine with the built in wallet miner I must wait the wallet to get sync or I can start right now?

The other miners may be more optimized

OCMiner, why did xzc confirmations slow down so much??

I had mined xzc on suprnova and the xzc confirmation was too low . it's over 24hours but no any confirmations.
Please check it now Ocminer. Thanks

Sorry there is nothing I can do about confirmations, they are set by the coin/network.

Thanks for the info. So we need an answer from the zcoin team.

This is just as a result of the miners dropping out and the network readjusting. It's using the same setup as Bitcoin.
Make sure u're using the right block explorer:
https://chainz.cryptoid.info/xzc/ which shows regular confirmations roughly every 10 minutes so the network is fine.

I mined some small XZC in oc's pool, and send to exchange, never arrived, exchange said the tx provided by oc pool not valid... ping'd oc never got a reply. While I use other oc pools without issue, anyone know if his xzc pool is dead??
Below is my message to oc:

I withdraw 1.93 XZC to my account in xzc.suprnova to cryptopia 5 hrs ago, but nothing showed up. I checked their admin:

Ticket description:

I deposited 1.93 XZC onto my account 5 hrs ago, still don't see it.
The address I deposited: aCvYkQu18zBBQ33onr1J2rhkt8TmCwpojT, generated from the wallet.
Tx: 52d2030a430cf6f0c2e8e150a6a25e3b7b0e570310d16a875725e68fc271bcba

But here is what they replied:

This TXid shows as invalid on the XZC block explorer. You can check for yourself here : https://zcoin.rocks/chain/ZCoin Please note that Network Confirmations are outside of Cryptopias control. Once the network has confirmed this transaction it will process and be available to you in your account.

Can you please check? Thanks.

Don't use the zcoin.rocks explorer Andreas hasn't updated it.

The working one is on https://chainz.cryptoid.info/xzc/ Your transaction can be seen here:

Yup definitely. We paid a bounty for ocminer to release his code open source so that anyone can run a pool Cheesy  He's releasing his code to us on Sunday Cheesy
OK, we are waiting for this code.  Cool

Indeed, I have pinged him Cheesy He was supposed to deliver it on Sunday so fingers crossed that everything is on track.

The most popular pool is Suprnova

There should not be any "most popular pool". There should be several pools with more or less the same hashrate.

Why there is no list of the pools in the OP? Devs should take care of it.

Yup definitely. We paid a bounty for ocminer to release his code open source so that anyone can run a pool Cheesy  He's releasing his code to us on Sunday Cheesy

To those who wish to find out more about MTP and why it is important:

https://zcoin.io/what-is-mtp-merkle-tree-proof-and-why-it-is-important-to-zcoin/

Zcoin is working to be the first cryptocurrency to implement MTP as a proof of work algorithm and work is ongoing. As the foundation of a coin’s security with also fundamental implications as to distribution and also verification speed, implementation of MTP is very high on our list of priorities and in our roadmap. Implementation of MTP is also expected to bring down wallet initialization times due to its fast verification as compared to the current stop gap Lyra2 implementation.

The MTP algorithm was devised by Alex Biryukov and Dmitry Khovratovich from the University of Luxembourg in their paper published on the 11 June 2016 titled Egalitarian Computing. These are the same researchers who came up with Equihash that is currently used in ZCash.

Egalitarian Computing

MTP was created as a way to remedy the disparity between ordinary users and adversaries/cheaters where the latter could use botnets, GPU, FPGA and ASICS to gain a significant advantage and mount a cheaper attack. The basic concept is that it should establish the same price/cost for a single computation unit on all platforms. This means that no single device should gain a significant advantage over another for the same price hence promoting egalitarian computing. With egalitarian computing, attackers would need to spend the same amount as ordinary users for equivalent ‘hashing’ power. As attackers need to usesimilar hardware as ordinary users, automated large-scale attacks become no longer possible. This combined with the fact hashing in MTP is highly memory intensive, users infected by trojans to participate in botnets would experience noticeable performance degradation and therefore more likely to suspect something is amiss.

Massive centralization can be seen with many existing proof of work algorithms such as SHA256 (Bitcoin), Scrypt (Litecoin, Dogecoin) and X11 (Dash) where hashing power is centralized in ASIC farms and normal users are not incentivised to participate in the security of the network. Even in newer schemes such as Ethash which is used in Ethereum, although it is deliberately designed to be GPU friendly (more than a 100x more efficient than on a CPU), this still encourages GPU farms and centralization. Equihash despite it being memory hard, is not sequentially memory hard, meaning it can be mostly parallelized which makes development of ASICs more likely.

This doesn’t mean that we discourage GPU mining, but with MTP it is foreseen that even with GPUs mining, CPU mining would still remain competitive.

Fast and lightweight Verification

MTP although it is computationally and memory intensive to find the solution, once found, its solution can be quickly and efficiently verified without requiring a lot of memory.

This is important since by keeping verification quick, this makes the network more resistant to DoS attacks that target verifiers. It also allows lightweight hardware such as smartphones to perform verification which is not possible on many other hard memory hard algorithms. Verification speed of MTP is also expected to be faster than Equihash.

Source: https://www.usenix.org/system/files/conference/usenixsecurity16/sec16_paper_biryukov.pdf

There may also be a possibility that as MTP uses merkle-trees, merkle-tree optimizations may be possible and this is an area we are researching into.

Progress Free

A mining algorithm should be ‘progress-free’ meaning that mining must be a stochastic process where there is always a non-zero chance that the solution is found and being independent of any previous events. This prevents centralization and mitigates network delays.

Therefore a mining algorithm with an ‘initialization phase’ is not truly progress-free since the chances of finding a solution when initializing is zero. This is one of the main reasons why Biryukov and Khovratovich decided to develop MTP despite already developing Equihash since Equihash still requires a long initialization phase that certifies the memory allocation and is therefore not ‘progress-free’.

It is believed that the shorter an initialization phase, the more decentralized mining can be since everyone starts from an even playing field and economies of scale or network location plays much less a role in mining efficiency.

Summary

MTP is an amazing new mining algorithm that is high performance, high security and promotes egalitarian computing. Zcoin intends to be the first to implement this and we forsee that MTP will offer good future proofing. Being a privacy centric coin, it is even more important that mining power is decentralized and as such we are focusing on working on the very core of Zcoin’s security first before embarking on other features. We hope to finish MTP implementation in the coming months.
