9201  Economy / Marketplace / Re: MtGox Matrix on: December 13, 2010, 04:13:51 PM
Your matrix display is so useful.  Using the 0.0025 sub-cent axis display is my favorite way to see bid/ask spread:
   http://www.taters.net/cgi-bin/btc/matrix.pl?axisinc=0.0025

There's a page-display widget that I would like to use that will periodically refresh the matrix in a window off to the side.  However, that tool doesn't like how your script doesn't return valid html -- e.g., no <html> tag, etc.

Were those tags omitted explicitly?  If not, would you consider adding them in?
9202  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin+Translator Firefox and/or Chrome Extension for Chatroulette on: December 13, 2010, 08:07:21 AM
Sorry, I didn't at first comprehend what you had written.

Technically it is likely possible that an extension on both sides could automatically inject some data into the text chat and that the other side interprets that data.

But I see:
  http://chatroulette.com/terms/

3) Permitted Use of Web site

9203  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin+Translator Firefox and/or Chrome Extension for Chatroulette on: December 13, 2010, 07:55:10 AM
I'm pretty sure the main problem is that there is no way communicate between the two sides.  Data can manually be passed using the text chat capability I suppose.

Maybe OpenTok might be worth looking at for building an app instead?

Is this listing still open?  Can I add it to:

(anyone can post a listing, but I'll do the copy and paste for you if you wish.)
9205  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin Wallet to Amazon S3/Google Storage for Developers? on: December 12, 2010, 07:45:51 PM
I've been making backups of my wallet using Dropbox, but I found that the bitcoin client writes logfiles and other data rather often, which clutters up my Dropbox history. So, I wanted to write a patch that will let users automatically back up their wallet after every transaction to Amazon S3 or Google Storage for Developers.

Anyone willing to pledge bitcoin donations for this project? Of course, I don't expect to get anything before I complete the project, but I'd be much more willing to put time into it if I know I'll get even a little cash out of it.

I plan on making the project open-source, using the same license as bitcoin.

Rather than have dropbox backup the entire Bitcoin folder can you have it just backup the wallet.dat, which is all you need to recover if needed.   Assuming you are using MkLink (Vista/WIndows 7) or Junction/fsutil (XP), do either of those allow just an individual file to be linked?  (On linux I use ln (symlink) which allows either.)

I've used Microsoft SyncToy to replicate an individual file into a Dropbox folder and added it to the task scheduler so that it is performed automatically each day.

But as far as storing an unencrypted wallet.dat on Dropbox ... Huh

Dropbox appears to have the bases covered as far as being able to trust that your data is secure from unauthorized access on their end: https://www.dropbox.com/help/27
Dropbox employees aren't able to access user files, and when troubleshooting an account they only have access to file metadata (filenames, file sizes, etc., not the file contents)

however Dropbox is used by many to replicate their documents and files to all of the various devices they use.  Do you really want your unencrypted wallet.dat on your dropbox folder on each of these devices?

As far as a patch modifying the Bitcoin client to be able to backup the wallet after every transaction (or at least after ever new address is allocated), is the backup target going to be *my* S3 / Google Storage account or yours / 3rd party?  If the wallet is encrypted (e.g., gpg) first, then I don't care as much.  The Bitcoin FAQ reads: An in-built tool for encrypting your wallet will be included in Bitcoin later on. so that will likely make auto-backup functionality easier to build.

Is there any roadmap / priority list for the client to get a better handle on when and how that might happen?

9206  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Wikipedia Article Incubator on: December 11, 2010, 08:00:53 PM
Do you write Euro or Euros?

Singular of course, it is just Bitcoin.  But is the plural Bitcoin or Bitcoins?

I will send you five Bitcoin.
I will send you five Bitcoins.

The total number of Bitcoins in circulation today is 4.85 million.

9207  Economy / Marketplace / Re: ClearCoin: for safer bitcoin transactions on: December 11, 2010, 07:42:53 PM
I would say that three years is about the high end limit for such a thing, but one year should be long enough.

Will people still have their current wallet a year, or three from now?
9208  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: transfer confirmation? on: December 11, 2010, 07:37:51 PM
This might be of use to you as well -- ClearCoin escrow:
  http://clearcoin.appspot.com/

The first 100 BTC of each transaction is free, with the escrow fee at 1% for anything over that.

So to protect yourself when sending, you can put the amount you are sending in escrow and then immediately release it.  The result is a publicly visible record that N Bitcoin were sent to XXXX...XXXX address on a date that could have been one of three different values (depending on whether the escrow expiration was 1 months, 6 months or 12 months out.).

Here's an example of a completed transaction that occurred on Dec 7, 2010:
   https://clearcoin.appspot.com/status/r_T89JAvkdiuTHbWCHCKyFTF

That, along with the instruction from the recipient showing what Bitcoin address you were supposed to send payment to, ... and you end up with a pretty convincing argument that the funds were truly sent.

I had a similar experience:

USAA checking accounts let you deposit funds from a mastercard, no delay, no transaction fee.

The first time I used my own Mastercard -- worked great.

The next time I tried a stored value Mastercard from the grocery store and Bzzzt, thank you for playing.

But that comes in handy w/ USAA.  I get 0.5% cash back when I pay using my USAA Mastercard as well.  You know, for times when Bitcoin is not yet accepted.
9210  Economy / Economics / Re: Why Fractional Reserve Banking Didn't Prop Up Yet? on: December 10, 2010, 08:45:24 AM
Which free "bank" / "e-Wallet" services are there:
MtGox
MyBitcoin
dragons.tl

any others?

For up to 100 BTC, ClearCoin.appspot.com escrow is free, and in a way could be used as an e-wallet.
9211  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Job Board on: December 10, 2010, 07:49:33 AM
For an anonymous user are you referring to the applicant/freelancer, or employer?

The form for Submitting A Job (link below) allows you to be as anonymous as you wish.  Any new posts do require the admin to approve -- but that is only to prevent bot / spam posts.
  http://www.bitcoinjobs.com/jobs/add/

As far as a rating system, that site uses a hosted job board service, which means I cannot add features.  I'll check to see if they have any plans to add anything like that.

The only immediate solution I can suggest is the technique I used on my listings on BiddingPond.  I had no feedback / rating there yet, so what I had done was in the listing gave the link that went to my feedback page on eBay.   Can do the same for linking to your feedback / rating on oDesk, elance or whichever reputation source you choose.
9212  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Some Statistics on: December 06, 2010, 06:52:17 PM
So there are about 2000 people generating coins. (1,5Mhash/s average and a 1Ghash/s cluster)

How did you compute that 2,000 number?  I'ld like to recalc it using the current difficulty.

Is this suitable?

9214  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could bitcoin play a role in this system of job distribution? on: December 06, 2010, 04:55:44 PM
In addition to TxtEagle there's also SamaSource, CrowdFlower, Fiverr, CloudCrowd

Of those, I've use Fiverr.  Worked splendidly.

Bitcoin might have a role to play in that arena.

That money is going to go somewhere, and somewhere I read a funny thing about a situation where you have lots of money chasing too few good and services.  I forget what that economic term is, however.   Grin

BTW, is that just for the region around St. Louis Missouri?  That is a whole lot of money getting poured into what is mostly three states and smaller portions of just four others.  That was the size of the entire U.S. economy less than 20 years ago.

I'm having trouble remembering what that term is as well.  But here are some pictures that might illustrate what you are describing ... maybe seeing them will will help jog your memory:

  http://finviz.com/futures_charts.ashx?t=GRAINS&p=h1
  http://bit.ly/dWxf9n [NYSE:TIF]

That BASE chart that NoAgenda posted is for the entire Federal Reserve system.  The St. Louis Fed is the branch that manages and publishes the nearly 25,000 datasets that are FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data) and FRED's archives,  ALFRED.

The reason it is titled "St. Louis Adjusted Monetary Base" is because it is based on research done in-house by the St. Louis Fed's own economic research team.  Most of the data compiled in FRED datasets are produced outside the Fed.

Take the GDP, for example, which is reported by the Dept. of Commerce's BEA.  The St. Louis Fed staff adds the data to FRED and ALFRED, and provides access to the time series data (.TXT, .XLS and .CSV versions):
  http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/categories/18/downloaddata
as well as to charts for the data.  Here's Real GDP.

“Because so much of the world is under-banked, consumers want these services very much,” Mr. Mattatia said.

In Pakistan:

The service, called Easypaisa (100 paisa equal a Pakistani rupee), now has 500,000 active users who sent transactions worth a combined 5.5 billion rupees, or $64.1 million, in the first quarter of this year.

Most were domestic money transfers, which are limited to $120 a transfer. Telenor exacts a fee of as much as 5 percent of the transaction.

You might want to consider placing your request in the Wanted message board on BiddingPond.com:

Additionally, a post on the General Talk board reads:

9220  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: new currencies based on bitcoins on: December 01, 2010, 09:10:07 AM
It's pretty easy to do. Bitcoin already contains an alternate network with a different genesis block and different network parameters (the minimum difficulty is lower to make generating easier).

Competing with Bitcoin will be almost impossible, however. You'd have to offer something really good.

It'll probably go down like this: Circa 2014.  I'll trade my 50 BTC for 0.214 of your OBX (Oprah Bux) -- which is just enough for the iPhone 6 my girlfriend wants.

[Edit: Changed currency name and added code OBX.]
