The encryption of the wallet.dat hasn't happened yet, that is coming with the next version of the client. There could still be some way to embed a time based unlock code into the bitcoin Merkle tree.

And it will be optional and, if I remember correctly, left unencrypted by default.
8442  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin app does not open on: June 16, 2011, 01:48:35 AM
Windows Vista basic, i downloaded it from the home page.  I have tried re-installing bitcoin.  Still does not work on admin account.  I did however try opening it as an admin in the guest account and it has worked.

Ok, so if it is truly a new installation and you have not used the wallet yet (nor given out any addresses), perhaps purging the databases and trying the installation yet again will work.

8443  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why the price didnt go up ? on: June 16, 2011, 01:43:13 AM
Moreso than difficulty or miners is perception... It's not even been a week since the price went from like $14 to $40

Just a clarification, the all time high on Mt. Gox exchange was just under $32, so about 20 % below your mention.

Also, for the record -- the forum user bitcoinminer has no association with @BitcoinMiner twitter account or http://www.BitcoinMiner.com

Darn You Dwolla, taking my money and not posting it in the time you stated.  Blast them.  Seriously!!! ARGGGGG!!!! Angry

If that is what happened, that is rare.   What date were the funds withdrawn from your bank?  And when you look into your account with Dwolla, does the current status still show "pending"?

What is the count of *business days* that have passed since the bank withdrawal occurred?
8445  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin app does not open on: June 15, 2011, 08:41:29 PM

What version of windows?

Was this from your own build of the client, or from a binary?

Have you tried re-installing Bitcoin?  There was recently released a new version: 0.3.23

Did it work and then stop working, or is this a new installation?

So how is this added up?  If I make a thousand trades and come out X amount of dollars ahead, can I just use the final amount for reporting?

And what records should I be keeping?

What does your broker statement include?   Probably will want to keep records with the same information

8447  Economy / Economics / Re: Price vs Difficulty Charts - indicators for buying or mining on: June 15, 2011, 07:53:49 PM
I was thinking price could start outstripping difficulty as the marginal supply constraints on gpus started to stall the growth in hash rate - maybe not at that point yet.

The hash rate still hasn't caught up to the rise in the BTC/USD so there is much room yet for capacity to come online.  Though there are supply constraints on the most efficient hardware (e.g., 6990s, etc.) there is an even larger base of the less efficient GPU hardware yet for sale, or already in use by consumers that needs only to be re-purposed for mining.  Heck, even those with i7s and those with free electricity are profitable right now.  And don't dismiss the capacity that FPGAs do now and will soon represent.

When the difficulty reaches the point that electricity starts to eat into profits, those with the less efficient hardware and those less motivated by the declining returns will start to drop off once again.  The difficulty level will equilibrate towards whatever level the market price ends up at.
8448  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MyBitcoin Down (Maintenance?) on: June 15, 2011, 07:33:37 PM
its still down for me jsut tried to go to the site and i get this

The connection has timed out
The server at www.mybitcoin.com is taking too long to respond.

Just an fyi, with some sites, the http redirect to the secure site ( https:// ) is more vulnerable to DDoS (if that is why the site is timing out for you.)   By using the https:// you would bypass any need for service from the non-secure host that does the redirect.

8449  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why the price didnt go up ? on: June 15, 2011, 07:28:00 PM
When price is high compared to difficulty more is spent on mining hardware and less on directly on bitcoins. Therefore difficulty increase does have a small and delayed effect on the price of bitcoin.

As far as why your download was taking a long time, make sure to use the newly released version of the Bitcoin client, v0.3.23.   If has improvements specifically to help with the problem you are describing:

To be sure, close the client and make a backup first.  But then you can install the latest version  and continue where you left off -- it will use the partially-complete blockchain.

Does a wallet have to be "online" (that is the client related to that wallet being connected to the bitcoin network) to receive money

That may seem confusing but that is because bitcoin only emulates our real-world concept of sending money.  What is actually happening when you spend a bitcoin is that a signed transaction is getting sent out to the network.  Once that transaction is included in a block, it then gets replicated on each node of the network.  So your wallet doesn't need to be connected to the network to "receive" a payment.

Anyway I wish it gave some info on it's space requirements and allowed you to set the path for the database files.

You can specify -datadir= to tell bitcoin to use a different data directory.

8452  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Dwolla? on: June 15, 2011, 06:04:50 AM
Heres some inside information. When Fisync is setup, if you open a bank account with a bank that uses it you can make same day transfers from mt.gox to your bank, using dwolla.

Well almost sameday, It depends on how fast mt.gox sends funds to dwolla.

How about the original direction, funding a transfer to Mt. Gox from my FiSync enabled bank?  Does that go same-day?
8453  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Dwolla? on: June 15, 2011, 06:01:43 AM
I wish there was a better way than Dwolla....  Took my last transfer 8 days to clear =(

Just to be fair, I don't think your problem is with Dwolla, right?  In other words if you had funds in your Dwolla account and you sent it to Mt. Gox, it would be there in minutes, right?

Thus ... your problem is likely with the payment network that Dwolla uses to transfer funds from your bank.  It is the Federal Reserve's ACH network.  They set it up to work this way back in the early 1970s.

As far as the 8 days, ... that won't likely repeat either, correct?   You only needed to do the first-time verification transaction once.   Now that your bank account is linked, you can add funds and they'll be in Dwolla in three business days.  From there the money travels to Mt. Gox within minutes.

It's just three business days for you from here on out.

How exactly does it work if you trade/mine a large amount of Bitcoins, and you get profits of thousands of USD. What do you tell the IRS?

8455  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Moar DDoS Pl0x on: June 15, 2011, 03:04:32 AM
No but seriously though, pretty much every bitcoin site is being DDoS'd right now, what's up with that?

At the time that you wrote that the http://www.bitcoin.org site was up and the sites it links to were up as well.  Others that were sampled were fine too:

This forum is up but is responding sluggishly.   I'm assuming that since you were able to post using the forum, it was at least functional for you.

Can you respond more specifically which site you were referring to?

Many hours ago, there were more significant problems but those had subsided by the time you had reported.
8456  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: crazy bitcoin client on: June 15, 2011, 02:34:38 AM
So with this online service the wallet file is kept on my HD while the transactions are initiated via the website, right ?

If you are referring to using an online eWallet service like MyBitcoin, then when doing so you have simply just an account on that service.  There is no local software and no local wallet related to that eWallet service.

It is just like online banking with your bank.  Except ... of course, MyBitcoin is not a bank, it is an eWallet provider.

And I'm still not quite clear about this, is there one wallet file per user or one wallet file per installation (of the client or per account on this website) ?

When installing and using the bitcoin client it will, by default, expect the wallet to exist in a specific directory location.  If the wallet does not yet exist one will be created.

8457  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MtGox hacked? ...and BTC withdraw limit? on: June 15, 2011, 02:12:43 AM
Apparently, MtGox is now limiting the amount of BTC you can withdraw from your own account.

The limits are:
Quote
MtGox imposes a $1,000 USD limit for withdrawals per 24 hours and a $10,000 USD limit for withdrawals per month. and Bitcoins withdrawn are counted toward this limit as well and the USD value is calculated at the market rate at the time of the attempted withdrawal.

Branching off the bank account -> dwolla question, my money has been taken out of my bank account but it's not in my dwolla account yet?  How long might it be in transit?

It appears to take from one to three business days after the funds have been pulled from your bank account before they show as available with Dwolla.

I have no access to the money cause it appears to be just floating somewhere in limbo.

This is not Dwolla sitting on your money, this is how the Federal Reserve's ACH banking network operates.

Down the road, Dwolla hopes to sign up banks and credit unions to use FiSync -- which creates a shorter path:

8459  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Exploring real mining costs...input needed on: June 15, 2011, 01:28:52 AM
I am trying to determine the real costs of mining bit coins.

Im looking for the average numbers across the country (USA)

Electricity can vary from one miner to the next based on how the rates are structured, especially if there are tiered rates that were intended to boost conservation.

But here's a table:

As predicted however, with $500 graphics cards now only available for purchase at a price closer to $1,000, ... profitability has more to do with having a source with the equipment in stock and available for sale and also to access to cheap capital than it does have to do with access to cheap electricity or inexpensive labor.

Should the BTC/USD plateau however and difficulty continue to rise, those electricity and labor factors will invert, and instead the cost of electricity will again be a more significant factor to a miner.

I setup @BitList https://bit-list.appspot.com with this in mind.

That's an interesting approach!  Please consider adding an article to the Bitcoin wiki for BitList.  Then add to the article [[Category:Local]] so that is included in the Local category as well.
