Economy / Economics / Re: bitcoin market cap: $50 million

Closing in on a $100 mil economy. The term "market cap" is generally used when referring to equities. With bitcoin the number of bitcoins issued is the "money stock" so multiplying the money stock times the current BTC/USD market exchange rate gives a number but I'm not sure what is the correct term for that number. Is it "currency valuation"? Weath? Purchasing Power? It definitely isn't "economy". If 100% of bitcoins were acquired and never traded, there could be a high valuation (BTCs issued X exchange rate) but a zero economy. Perhaps "Purchasing Power equivalent" is the correct term. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purchasing_power In other words, at the BTC/USD market exchange rate of $8.50 can we say the purchasing power of 1 BTC is equivalent to that of $8.50 USD. So the money stock of 6.2 million BTCs times $8.50 gives bitcoin the purchasing power of $52.7 million Of course the purchasing power is only valid for a specific point in time. The reason I'm not sure that referring to it as purchasing power would be best is because there needn't be any bitcoins to change hands for the purchasing power to rise or fall. Maybe "Current Purchasing Power" is the best way to describe this $52.7 million number? [Edit: It was suggested in another thread that TDV (Total Dollar Valuation) is the best way to describe what is sometimes referred to as Bitcoin's "market cap".]

Do we have a list of charities/non-profit orgs that accept Bitcoins for donations?
In addition to the list from the Bitcoin wiki is the list of charities in which donations through Witcoin can be made. - http://witcoin.com/charitiesAny charity can register to be included. Those who post, vote or reply on witcoin can configure their Witcoin user account such that a certain percent of the proceeds they earn after post, reply or voting can be donated to one or more charities of their choosing.

the advantage of defining 1 satoshi = 1 credit now, is that we never have to deal with this again
Why use the confusing term credits? Facebook uses that term already, as do many others. Satoshis aren't used anywhere else. I could see that term becoming more widely used. The equivalent to a $9.75 USD online purchase of a movie ticket would be 114.7 mSats (megasatoshis) (at today's BTC/USD exchange rate of $8.50) To send a micropayment to a blogger using YouTipIt, for instance, 3 msats (worth just about $0.25 USD) After some more bitcoin deflation, micropayments will be priced in terms of hundreds of kSats (kilosatoshis) while more significant amounts still can use mSats. That could work!

Economy / Economics / Re: Consequences of the possible USD crash?
|
on: May 14, 2011, 04:40:41 PM

We may find out soon enough: With price changes occurring at a greater frequency, consumers might become accustomed to not even knowing the price level at which an item should cost. For instance, some have become desensitized to the always-changing price at the gas pump. As long as payments to suppliers are made in a base currency (e.g., USD) then, the prices for goods and services sold for bitcoins will likely need to change at nearly the same frequency. But in a hyperinflationary period frequently changing prices will not be an attribute known only to those buying and selling using bitcoins. I could see bitcoin being useful in hyperinflationary times in a number of ways though. Hyperinflation elevates the significance of one bitcoin property. Payments sent using bitcoin clear faster than when sent using banking networks. When accepting credit card for payment, a merchant loses about 3% to the payment card network fee. If hyperinflation is occurring, the merchant could lose more yet if the merchant's buying power from the funds end up much less by the time those funds actually clear for spending a few days later. In this regard, in hyperinflationary times Bitcoin is supreme. I do not understand much of the market yet, only the sufficient to understand why fiat generates inflaction when government has debts (mainly because I am Brazillian Maybe one day BTC will be used for price listings for the same reason that the URV once was. :-) - http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2010/10/04/130329523/how-fake-money-saved-brazilbut not sufficient enough to understand what will happen with BTC. A lot of things could happen. It all depends on where and when bitcoin spreads. If those in investment finance start offering bitcoin as an investment vehicle and sell it on margin and that practice sees any uptake then that would cause huge bitcoin exchange rate volatility. If the government's response to hyperinflation is price controls then an undergound economy would likely build. A pseudonymous digital currency would likely find greater adoption in such an economy. The following blog post and the comments made in response are some good reading: http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2010/09/apocalypse-and-bubbles.html specifically, the "Even in the midst of Apocalypse, things will get better" reply: http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2010/09/apocalypse-and-bubbles.html#comment-75257930[edited]

Additional factors: - Mt. Gox exchange had, days earlier, difficulties due to DDoS attack. - There might have been pent-up buying pressure that was put to work once defenses to repel the DDoS proved relatively effective. - The exchange has stopped accepting wire transfer / ACH from the U.S. . Not sure on the timing, but maybe there was a "last call" rush to add funds before that method got halted. - New "easy" funding method made available (for those in the U.S.): Dwolla ($0.25 per trx) - Viral growth continues: - http://www.google.com/trends?q=bitcoin&ctab=0&geo=all&date=ytd&sort=0- Forbes readers finally pulling the trigger? - Network is protected even more from an attack using "massive computing power" now that there is over 1 Thash/s of hashing. - The technical analysis indicating that further upside still kept the exchange rate within the trading channel. - panic buyers realizing that if there is panic buying, it is better to be one of the first panic buyers. :-) - the crap on wall street, D.C. and elsewhere continuing, providing plenty of motivation for alternatives. Tuesday, May 10th, 2011- Update on Plato’s #BitcoinRoadTrip.
Plato’s bitcoins are lasting longer, thanks to the BTC/USD exchange rate favoring him for most of his travels since the cross-country trip began several weeks ago. His latest disatch reads: “The pancakes I just ordered at this diner cost me 1 bitcoin”. Plato uses as payment a bitcoin scratch-off card which contains a code that may be redeemed for bitcoins. - https://i.imgur.com/d61XK.jpg (scratch-off) - http://twitter.com/#!/therealplato - BTC/USD market exchange rate spikes a second day in a row, to $6.065.
The exchange rate on Mt. Gox climbed nearly 20% on Tuesday with some bouncing late in the day. - http://bit.ly/lWh5Aw - Press / media:

Sunday, May 15th, 2011Saturday, May 14th, 2011- Update on @TheRealPlato’s #BitcoinRoadTrip: Austin, TX
This leg of the trip brought Plato to a tech hub and he’s making the most of it. On Friday Plato met CEO of Tabbedout, a company that builds an app for Android and iPhone mobiles that is used at participating restaurants and bars. With the app you can open, view and pay for your tab. Will “pay using bitcoins” be added as one of the payment options? Let’s hope so! Following that was a visit to the McCombs School of business at UT Austin. Plato met with @LizWinks of the Center for Research in Electronic Commerce (CREC). The CREC’s director, Andrew B. Whinston was interviewed in February as part of CBC’s SPARK 139 episode on Bitcoin. - http://tabbedout.com/sections/13/how-it-works/consumers/pay-your-tab - http://www.bitcoinmoney.com/post/3554485526 - http://twitter.com/#!/therealplato - New blog: Bitcoin Trading Signals trading blog
