I also never tried alcoins trading or collecting any of the altcoins.I tried to collect dogecoins and litecoins at the start but dogecoins got down by quiet a good amount after that and then i stopped collecting any of the altcoins,i dont trust them much and also i dont have much knowledge about that.
Well altcoin trading is for profit taking only and it's fine if people doesn't like this method. It's just an option for everyone to maximize their earning methods. But you know it's worth to try. Give it a shot and build experience. That experience will help you to decide your future actions. Definitely try altcoin trade was a good experience and a must-try. Every fiat has to be converted into bitcoin and bitcoin will surely have a stable value. It's too far fetched as of today though to confirm that this will happen in the future. If we try to convert all fiat money into bitcoin today, people will just do a protest as the majority of people don't even know what bitcoin is.

I don't have any idea what will happen in 2017 but with the recent dump of bitcoin the price is not stable anymore, but there are some signs that the bitcoin price is going to rise again but slowly this time. Let's see how much the price will go after Kim Dotcom announces the megaupload and he said that bitcoin price will be at $2k
The only thing we can do is to wait and watch as we cannot be sure what will be the exact scenario in next year, and no one can predict the exact price of bitcoin for sure. True indeed we can not accurately predict the price because prices are always fluctuating. But I'm sure the price will increase because it is caused by the adoption in 2017 will continue to increase so that more people who know and use bitcoin. Yeah next year will be surely better year for bitcoins in compare to this year, as there will be many more users who will join the community and we will find many shops where we can spend our coins. Of course, since year 2016 is a better year for us as the price has increased substantially. OP's friend's plan is a great one, but the hard part (heh heh) is getting that 100 bitcoin. It must have been so nice back in 2009-10 when the price was low, and you could have easily become a whale in only a couple of years. Now you have to be rich beforehand to grab 100 btc.
In either case, I think getting that amount might set you up with retirement level money in a few years. We'll get to $5000 eventually.
I think now we do not have to think about the past and just have to get a lesson from the past, so in that case we have to collect bitcoins as much as possible and a day will come when the price of bitcoin will be in 4 or 5 digits, at that time you will be the whale and other will think for going to the past and collect bitcoins.
