9521  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 11, 2014, 07:49:08 PM
I have been keeping an eye on the new Rockminers using ASICMINER's new chip as their pre-order stats looked similar to these S3's.  Not as good, but worth keeping an eye on.
Well we can probably check the R3 and RK's off our list of alternatives.  At least for now.  They are getting panned by new users.
High rejects, on the R3 and both high rejects and low Gh/s on the RK.  Plus they suck more power and cost more per Gh/s than the S3.  Assuming the S3's stats hold up.
Not sure the Asicminer chips will be very successful.  And they could definitely use FriedCat's involvement in miner design.

asicminer chips have worse characteristics to BM1382 chip and you can see it in GH/w difference.
Whether they will be cheaper to deploy-I don't know, but i doubt it.
9522  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - Best W/GH/s ratio, Best $/GH/s ratio on: July 11, 2014, 07:46:47 PM
Son-of-a-bitch!!!  Now they are shooting from Lebanon too!!!  Please, please, please don't hit the miners at the shipping facility.

Maybe Spondoolies should move to China. Could help with their lead times in ordering parts.

at least their manufacturing and shipping...
spond could be an apple of bitcoinmining...design the product and market it, let others manufacture and assemble...
9523  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Antminer S3 - Profit is Impossible on: July 11, 2014, 07:37:11 PM
Old school  baseboard heat  heating bills are 300 a month in small 4 room homes.
I am attempting to have s-3's mining in one or two of these homes.  This could make nice money for me and the home owner's that I recruit.

While Antminers aren't known to catch fire, be careful with extending out your liability to other people's homes.  It's one thing to mine in your own house and keep an eye on your equipment.  It's another to have somebody else's home go up in flames due to a power supply failure - and that probably won't be covered by the homeowner policy.

This kind of thing should be covered by the policy of the homeowner who has the miner in their home.  As long as they don't intentionally set the miner on fire, and as long as it's not considered to be foolishly dangerous (e.g., you know there's a like a 90% chance it will burn your house down), it should be covered.

Home miners with 15btc worth of miners (s-3's) in a garage  hashing 9.5 th at  7320 watts...

Philip...is this what you are doing (20 S3)? I am impressed.
9524  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin (BTC/USD) Price Prediction. $4000-$6500 by August/September 2014. on: July 11, 2014, 06:47:01 PM
Here is my Bitcoin price prediction on a drawn graph.

https://www.tradingview.com/v/aA0zaAFD/

I use a logarithmic scale.

There is a pattern of about 7.3 to 7.8 months between each bitcoin price spike top.

The bull run should begin any day now. The price should be moving up steadily in 2 weeks.

To be conservative, I would say the price of a single bitcoin will reach over $4,000 but per this graph it should actually reach $6,500. It's just hard to imagine!

$4,000 - $6,500 bitcoin by September 2014.

nice chart, but this prediction assumes that everything will repeat itself exactly, which is unlikely. i agree, however, that next "bubble" would be at least $6000, but could be as high as 60000 (if 2011 pattern will repeat itself). The timing of such 'bubble", however, is completely unknowable.

How does it make sense to host a SP30 (Sept) for $350/Month (Mich-colo) when it only generates $1500 in it's lifetime?
Im not trying to be stupid, I just don't get how this works at all? The monthly income is less than the hosting costs after 2 months at CoLo, not to mention the purchase price...
I just don't see how people make any money doing this anymore...

Am is blind or i can see that S3 is slower than S2 ? S2 is in another topic stated to mine at 1THS?

Huh?? Grin

S3 its 478GH/s @366W
S2 its 1 TH/s @less than 1100W from the wall.

I think its way better S3 because of power .S2 its entirely diffent also  different machine

Oh ok i didn't know that i guess the manufacturer is different than?

No... same manufacturer.  The difference is in the ASIC used in each machine.

By the way, you forgot to mention that the S3 is cheaper, too.

S2 - 1TH/s @ 1100W is $1625
2 S3s - 956GH/s @ 732W is ~$900

yeah, didnt think it was necessary to talk about price hehe. its a nonsense to buy S2 having S3 Grin

This is not an exact comparison. You have to add the price of either two CX600-750 or one EVGA 1300 to run two S3s, bringing the price to $1050 (still cheaper, of course). Besides, S2 is here and S3 is an unknown, but expectedly good commodity. We just don't know yet if S3 will work well, very well or excellent. In addition, S2 has the possibility of upgrade to 1.8-2TH that is "expected" in July-Aug.
Edit: Typo-S2, not S3 is upgradable to 1.8-2Th
9527  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: H/w Hosting Directory & Reputation on: July 10, 2014, 10:32:23 PM
It seems that current WA datacenters are not passing almost any savings in electricity rates to consumers as the price in Michigan and WA are essentially the same despite electricity being 1/3-1/4 in central WA. Just a comment.

Electricity usage is a small portion of the total costs of running a traditional tier 3 (>= 99.982% uptime) datacenter. This is reflected in their rates. They charge about 2-8 cents for electricity, and 12-18 cents for everything else.

Then, why all this talk about hosting miners in WA. Any state, except NY and CA would do. It is either important or non-important, but it cannot be important enough for the hosting company (to be in WA) and non-important for customers. It does not make sense. Perhaps, I am pushing this point too much, but otherwise the whole thing does not work. Regarding the uptime: some people are running miners in their garages with almost the same success. All you need is a good proper ventilation with some air conditioning (as long as the temperatures stay below 82oF or so), disconnect detection (no connection) and periodic reboot (usually not the miners themselves, but the software)-and you are golden.

Funny, people want sales, but don't want to pay up more than a very small premium on batch 1 stock on ebay, which is a paradoxical behavior.

@Digital Fortress

... as DCs in WA get 3-4ct/kWh electricity... Spondoolies is able to quote 16cts /kWh (115$/kW) in a WA facility (starting from a 2.7kW contract), I am wondering why you are quoting 20% more on a 10kW contract.

Power costs in Seattle, where DF is based, are around $0.068/kWh. The sub-$0.04 stuff is all in central WA, where Titan (Spondoolies's contracted datacenter) and I are. My rates in Grant should be about $0.023/kWh once I get above 200 kW load. Titan's are probably similar. That's probably much of why DF is pricier than Titan.

It seems that current WA datacenters are not passing almost any savings in electricity rates to consumers as the price in Michigan and WA are essentially the same despite electricity being 1/3-1/4 in central WA. Just a comment.

Thanks and welcome to BTCTalk. I think that it is important to quote the length of your contracts (or whether you require a contract) and the price per kw before potential discounts. People are quoting 20.8c-i don't know if this is accurate.

It doesn´t really make sense to develop the S4 boards for another backplane than the S2 backs.

Obviously, this point could be wrong if some additional advantages could be achieved by a better backplane.

The S4 would most likely be in the range of 2-2.5TH if the same 1kW power supply is used.

I think it's pretty obvious there were some major problems with the S2 backplane/board design when it comes to shipping.

The S1/S3 have an extremely durable design from a shipping standpoint.

I don't know what form factor the S4 will come in, but I hope that it is nice and solid like the S1/S3....

There does not seem to be any shipping problem anymore since June 26.
Everything comes solid, there is a metal plate on top and two metallic planks that fix the hashing boards in position. I had nothing dislodged or unplugged.
Bitmain promised an inexpensive upgrade for S2 to the range of 1.8-2 Th. Could be a good deal if it costs ~$500 or less, however, I don't know what the cost of the board is. They have to break even or make a slight profit on such upgarde to make it feasible, but it cannot be too much as people will not order.

I hope they'll start shipping today or tomorrow.

I thought that Bitmain commented that they will start shipping on 14th.
9536  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: PSU that will run two overclocked S3's on: July 08, 2014, 10:46:37 PM
I said the evga was best.  its biggest flaw is it is a little loud .

I have a seasonic 1200 platinum it is better if you want a quiet psu.

but it is 290 usd.

 I can't find a  good sale .

I use the seasonic on 11 gridseed blades pulls 900 watts for the 11 blades. the nice thing about it is 8 separate pcie cables

while the  evga uses 6 pcie cables.

but 290 vs 153 or 170  and the evga wins out.

I assume it would be a bit quieter when not running full out - and it wouldn't be with the 2 S3s overclocked.  Bitmain's original specs for the S3 were 504GH/s at 390W from the wall.  Latest I read was that maximum overclocked draw was 0.981W/GH/s, so total draw would be ~1100 watts from the PSU, which might get the fans spinning.

In any case... I've got an SP10, so I'm very well acquainted with loud fans Grin

yeah that puppy is very loud.

I was running 7 s-1's clocked   to 393 freq house was hot and fans were really loud.

And the wife was pissed off at the noise.
Oh I hear it all the time... the first time I plugged that SP10 in, she came in from outside on the porch and said, "What the hell is that noise?"  When I explained it was my new miner she said, "You have got to be kidding me.  There's no way I'm listening to that damn screeching." So, I tweaked the settings and put it in a corner in the basement.  Every day she'll still throw a comment out about not being able to hear me over the noise.  Smiley

Oh, the famous wife or GF factor. If BTC goes to 10K, the first question would be-why you had ONLY seven?
I agree that noise, especially noise with changing tonalities (like S1 does when it accelerates) is a major decision maker.
If S3 is noisy, I will have to sell at least some.
9537  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: July 08, 2014, 10:26:22 PM
Regarding refunds.

I think that most people went into ordering Neptune because we expected it in March, maybe April, at least I was.
Then in January-February it slipped out that development is not that far off from the drawing board and datorhall pictures were posted, upsetting some.
This caused the first wave of refunds.
Second wave was caused by the depressed price of BTC where it became obvious that it would be difficult to make any money at those prices.
Perhaps, to KnC management it looked like a betrayal and sophisticated hedging strategies, but I think it was quite simple-just math.

However, going forward, i don't think that pre-ordering money collection would work to the same level of success as with Neptune. There are too many entrenched players with a low cost base. The only thing that could re-invigorate the pre-orders is a spike in BTC price.
9538  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - Best W/GH/s ratio, Best $/GH/s ratio on: July 08, 2014, 07:40:45 PM
this SP30 is a joke !At this price it would be good if it's delivered right now,but when this sp30 comes out in SEPTEMBER it will be useless at this price !

Yea, I want to support Spondoolie and the community and keep myself in the game, but at that current price with a $300 shipping charge the most I could ever make would maybe be $2500-$3200. So, for something that cost me $5395 and only get the most $3200 out of it doesn't seem like a good investment. And I'm working with the current numbers, the September numbers would even be worse. I'm trying to keep myself in the game, and I'd really hate to buy a few Antminer S3's, but their so damn cheap it is hard to say no. I'd rather use a Spondoolie product for good support and a quality product but maybe this go around I'll just stick to buying bitcoin out right from now on and not have to worry about hardware. Apparently it seems everyone in the world is putting up their own data center these days. In my opinion, the main problem and concern we ALL should be worried about is power.

Opentoe, please do me the favor of replying to my question with your (approximate) percentage gains from your calculations. Just curious.

Regards,

~Blaise

Obviously I used an online calculator and it came to about %66. I used the Tradeblock site, which isn't set in stone with the output numbers, but I would definitely say they are a good approximate. Here is what I input for one SP30 starting in September.
https://tradeblock.com/mining/a/a45142e2e9
Maximum profit only indicates $3630, and yea, I was high with the difficulty increase cause I'd rather have worse case numbers to make a decision on. I think if I spend over $5k on a mining rig and then have to spend $300/month to co-locate I'd want a better reward than $3k-$4k. For 6TH/s in September I think $5395 is too much right now, that's all. I'm hoping all the numbers are correct. The reason I kept the diff at 20 is because at that time there will probably be a slew of KNC Neptunes online, thousands of Antminer S3's and, another one called Rockminer?, and then of course Spondoolie's. That's a huge dent onto the network, and if you adjust that difficulty setting on that page it does change your max profit considerably. The lowest change in 4 months has been %10.66.

Apr 05 2014   6,119,726,089   22.23%   43,806,706 GH/s

I've never been a risky person, so I hesitate, and sometimes I lose out. The best thing I ever did was buy a KNC Saturn and then bought 4 upgrade modules. That little guy is still chugging along. I think if my house had more electrical resources and didn't have to worry about cooling I'd have mining rigs all over the place. It is addicting.

whatever you linked to on traderblock assumes 20% increase in a MONTH, not a cycle.
20% is definitely on a lower side, but possible in 6mo
I would use 30%/mo. In this case-about breakeven in april 15.
here is is:
https://tradeblock.com/mining/a/5d5e92893d
bottom line: profit is possible ONLY if difficulty stagnates to below 30%/mo AND bitcoin increases in price.

I should soon have ANTMiner S3.
very profitable.

Not sure I would claim it to very profitable, will barely ROI. Bitcoin investment is possibly a better use of your fiat money.
But hey, I still have 8 x s3's on order , so i'll shut up :s

Just make sure that your digs can handle ~3kwh extra.
I know that my comfortable limit (at least in summer) is ~2.3-2.4kwh extra heat and this is pushing it, which equals one S2 and 3 S3
However, I greedily ordered 6 S3 and now contemplate what to do as I don't want to sell the S2.
Selling the rest on ebay looks like a waste of time because of a small premium.

Yeah, but the whole IP thing, mining configuration, admin password, and the power plug. So untoasterish. Smiley

I can start a service "mining for dummies" not meant as an insult but to mock the book series. You call us up give us your pool info we config and ship it to you plug and play ready all you do is plug in power and data and off you go  Shocked
