981  Economy / Speculation / Re: Dreamspeculation Thread (latest post by op: Predicted flash crash) on: June 19, 2014, 12:38:30 PM
This thread hurts my head. I can't believe that two of the most technically minded speculators on here (TERA & MatTheCat) are relying on their
dreams for BTC predictions. However they are quick to rubbish other people's predictions when they don't fit their own (admittedly solid) TA.

Guys, all this business of dreams coming true can easily be explained by "regression to the mean" and "cherry-picking" of the dreams that best fit the current market trend. Also, I would imagine that you will be more likely to remember the dreams that come true, and forget the ones that don't.

I realise that dreams can show us subconscious thoughts that may not be felt while awake. But if you believe that your subconscious mind holds secrets of market prediction, then why not just trade based on your gut, and not bother with any TA whatsoever?

I'm not trying to be a dick here, if you want to make trades based on your dreams then that's fine, go ahead. I just object to you two giving people shit for not backing up their own predictions with TA, when they say things like: "My gut says we will drop to $360"/"I think we will hit $1000 in <1 month" etc. It's a bit hypocritical if you ask me.
982  Economy / Economics / Re: Recommend me some low-risk inflation beating investments. on: June 16, 2014, 08:24:42 PM
In these chastened times 5% and above is considered risky. As you used a £ sign I assume you're in the UK. Have you looked into a stocks and shares ISA? I stuck a bit into the Fundsmith one and it's performed well.

Yeah I thought 5% might be pushing it...  Cheesy

Didn't know you could get stock+shares ISAs, cheers. I'll check some out.
983  Economy / Economics / Recommend me some low-risk inflation beating investments. on: June 16, 2014, 07:12:12 PM
I'm looking to invest £5k into something that will outperform inflation. I already own BTC, and want to diversify into something low-risk, low-return - anything above 5%/year would be OK.

I'm not convinced with the PM markets, they seem to be highly manipulated and bearish right now.
If I had 50x the money I would invest in a house, but unfortunately I'm too poor for that.

I'm thinking along the lines of certain stocks (tech companies like Google/Tesla?), maybe more obscure PMs like Platinum/Palladium? Any suggestions?

cheers  Smiley

984  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Let's face it -- just because you CAN have children doesn't mean you SHOULD. on: June 13, 2014, 04:46:38 PM
...snip...
2. Up to one-third of all sex crimes against children are committed against boys (as opposed to girls).

It's actually around a fifth. 1 in 5 girls are the victim of abuse, compared to 1 in 20 boys. But that's irrelevant. What's the assumption/error that you're making here? Anyone spot it?

You're assuming that you are homosexual if you commit a sex crime against a boy. That is simply not the case. But you wouldn't know that because you are cherry picking statistics you like from a homophobic hate site. The simple fact is that most adult men who molest boys do not show any sexual interest in adult men.

I'm not even touching on how you have fallen into the sampling bias heffalump trap.

Thanks, I was just gonna question the statistical errors, especially the point in bold, but you explained it better than I ever could.

There's a great book - Bad Science by Ben Goldacre - which talks about the problems with health/science reporting in the media, and how statistics are misrepresented by people wanting to push a certain story/agenda. Highly recommended.

The author did a TED talk as well - http://www.ted.com/talks/ben_goldacre_battling_bad_science
It's slightly off topic, but I think it's important that people see through these misleading statistics.
985  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 13, 2014, 01:03:15 PM
as i said, mooncoin on cryptsy is getting very hot, maybe this spike down affected altcoins. But there is a lot of bid support and eating ask.... https://www.cryptsy.com/markets/view/145

hah, that coin's value has so many zeroes after the decimal point I needed to put my finger over the screen to count them. And that's when valued against LTC. Houston, we have a problem.
986  Economy / Marketplace / Re: USMS auction group buy on: June 13, 2014, 11:49:01 AM
^^ Thanks for the clarification on the type of auction, yes it does seem to be a sealed-bid type.

I'll keep an eye on this thread - I'm still interested but I'd only be prepared to put forward maybe 2 BTC, I think this idea would be more suited to people with a bit more to bid like the 50 BTC offer above.

Great idea though, would be cool if it worked out!
987  Economy / Marketplace / Re: USMS auction group buy on: June 13, 2014, 10:40:40 AM
I'm interested, but I'm confused about one thing:

Won't the lots of 3,000 BTC be sold at a premium, as incentive to avoid slippage? I guess if you put in a bid below market value, and it's accepted, then we win. But the more I think about it, the more unlikely it seems that we'd get a discount.

I guess it would be cool to own some of the "infamous FBI seized coin stash"  Grin
988  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Biggest fraud in history (this will nearly destroy Bitcoin)(DRK & BC affected) on: June 04, 2014, 04:47:02 PM
What will happen too Bitcoin? the price on bitcoin will probably fall too even under 100$ and introduction too an new 512SHA coin will probably be the best option for miners and other entusiasts to participate in without exagerating fraud system as proposed by EMC2, UNO, DIEM, REDD, BC, DRK and other X-11 coins.

I doubt Bitcoin will fall to under $100, it has got a userbase orders of magnitude larger than some of the shitty pre-mined altcoins. And SHA256 is safe for now, if it becomes weak in the future then it can be changed.

Of course most of the altcoins are scams/premines/pump+dumps. I guess you could call them a "fraud", but the crypto space is currently unregulated, so I'd be surprised if these types of altcoins DIDN'T exist. Welcome to crypto, if you don't like it then you're free to stick with dirty fiat  Grin
989  Other / Off-topic / Re: What Are Some of The Craziest Religions Out There? on: June 04, 2014, 02:59:40 PM
An agnostic might be somebody without any kind of faith. An atheist that says god doesn't exist, might be accused of a faith decision, since he has no evidence that god doesn't exist.

At most, he can say, since I never seen any evidence, I don't believe there is a god, but he shouldn't say that he believe there is no god or that god doesn't exist.

You cannot prove a negative. Nor can you prove a positive 100%.

Your first sentence is incorrect, agnostics believe that the truth about god is unknown/unknowable. When an atheist says that god doesn't exist, he is not making a faith decision but a logical decision. True, he does not have any evidence that god does not exist (see above), but he believes that the chances are close enough to zero to say god does not exist. He also believes that the burden of proof is on the person making the claim (ie a religious person).

An analogy would be:

A car making very little noise drives past. You assume that it is a new-fangled electric car, but your friend tells you "No, it is actually an old broken car being pulled by a herd of invisible wildebeest. The invisible cats tied to the back help with braking."

Now, most logical people would not believe your friends explanation (even though of course it is possible, just very unlikely). That is exactly how an atheist feels about god. Although there is a miniscule chance that god exists, that could be said about anything at all i.e. invisible dragons/flying spaghetti monsters etc. That is how atheists CAN say, without faith, "I believe god doesn't exist"
990  Other / Off-topic / Re: What Are Some of The Craziest Religions Out There? on: June 04, 2014, 01:02:29 PM
I say one of the craziest religions is Googlism.

http://www.thechurchofgoogle.org/

And then Creativity.

http://creativitymovement.net/

ALL religions are crazy.

Including atheism.

Lets not start this again. Atheism by definition cannot be a religion, as it is not based on any kind of faith. Most atheists would change their mind about god if they saw any evidence of it.

I suppose some atheists could be described as "fundamental" or "antitheist", in that they would REFUSE to believe in god even if they had evidence for it, and push their views onto others similar to the way religious people push their view onto others. But that still doesn't make it a religion (I can see how these people could be seen as close-minded/stupid/annoying though, in much the same way as some religious people are close-minded/stupid/annoying)

On topic: I've always thought that Rastafari was a bit odd (even though most Rastas I've met have been pretty cool, nice guys), mainly the idea of Haille Selassie the king of Ethiopia being worshipped as a god. Reminds me a bit of Ancient Egypt, where the pharaohs were worshipped as divine. It would be funny if we worshipped the Queen of England here!
991  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Silver and copper coins- Goxxed For The Last Time a (commiserative) coin on: June 04, 2014, 10:43:19 AM
I received my coins 2 days after posting, well packaged, and BTspaghetti was a pleasure to deal with.
Good quality coins, and the pictures make me laugh every time I look at them - I love how you've captured the smugness of Karpeles, and there's the added bonus of Picard on the back... genius  Cheesy

992  Other / Off-topic / Re: I woke up in a new Buggati on: June 03, 2014, 05:39:41 PM
By the way, an automobile is a depreciating asset. You traded Bitcoin for a depreciating asset? That seems foolish.

In time, this will be as bad as the 10,000 BTC pizza...

Well, probably not if he got one like this:

Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe. Went for like $10m at auction. Could probably sell it for twice that in 10 years, and no CGT to pay.
993  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin Confusion on: June 03, 2014, 10:32:09 AM
I think the idea is that a voting/contract system could be bootstrapped to the blockchain by anyone. This would work by using, for example, a single satoshi as a "coloured coin", where it had an extra intrinsic value (like a single vote, or a single share/contract with a company). The actual value of the satoshi would be negligible, and the value would come from it's extra defined use. This works, as each satoshi on the blockchain has a unique identifier, that could be tracked by a company using them for contracts, or a voting system.

Think that's how it would work...

Yes, I guess if she was a powerful goddess she could at least make herself look better.

But, perhaps, it was the artists from the paleolithic that didn't make justice to her.

Well she does seem to have piled on the pounds recently, but I mean you can't blame the girl for carrying of bit of extra weight. After all she has just popped A WHOLE FRICKIN UNIVERSE out her vag.

I also have a thing for BBWs  Grin
998  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Jesus Is Lord on: May 31, 2014, 08:44:03 PM
If the criteria of lordship is antiquity, then this lady might be the one (24,000 BC):

Quote from: Wikipedia
Helen Benigni argues in "The Emergence of the Goddess" that the consistency in design of these featureless, large-breasted, often pregnant figures throughout a wide region and over a long period of time suggests they represent an archetype of a female Supreme Creator. Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Iron Age people likely connected the female as a creator innately tied to the cycles of nature: women gave birth and their menstrual cycles aligned with lunar cycles and tides.

Now that sounds plausible, plus she's a bit of a MILF. Maybe it's Ra's Mum?
999  Other / Off-topic / AKIRA Live Action trailer on: May 31, 2014, 08:32:14 PM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1GO-93Nt3c

This is produced by fans through crowdsourcing (not a film studio), but it's properly epic and well made.
As a huge fan of the anime, I really hope they don't fuck up the live-action film (If anyone ever actually gets round to making it, there's been talk of it for like over 5 years or something)
