21  Other / Meta / Timeouts and other errors with Tor Browser, Cloudflare, Bitcointalk, and Alt-Svc on: October 11, 2020, 04:38:43 PM
Background sob story, you can safely skip to the next part

For the last few weeks I've been having a horrible time browsing Bitcointalk. It seemed like every other click would result in a random secure connection error, or a time out. I'm using a Tor Browser, which is otherwise excellent. Requesting a new a new Tor circuit usually helps for a few seconds. It got so bad that I would have to request a new circuit on e.g. the watchlist page, then open 10-20 threads in new tabs as quickly as I can so that I could read them. There was very little chance to get to the next page in a thread without getting a new circuit.

tl;dr:

I'd like to know if anyone has experienced any Tor issues lately. For me the problem went away when I disabled Alt-Svc in Tor Browser. I wouldn't recommend messing around with Alt-Svc unless you know exactly what you're doing. I'm just curious if this was some unique-to-me clusterfuck or a more widespread issue.

What is Alt-Svc?

The Alt-Svc HTTP response header is used to advertise alternative services through which the same resource can be reached. An alternative service is defined by a protocol/host/port combination.

That doesn't tell us anything interesting. The best I can figure out is that this can be useful in some load-balancing scenarios. One nasty thing that needs to be noted about this is that the URL in the browser doesn't change so you would never know that your browser is connecting to a different site than the one shown in the address field.

Enter Cloudflare

I know we all love Cloudflare like we love our families, i.e. we don't have a choice. It's essentially Internet 3.0 and it sits between us and many of the sites we use, including Bitcointalk. It also tends to fiddle with things that it shouldn't, such as DNS and yes, the Alt-Svc header. Basically: if Cloudflare thinks that you're coming from Tor it will send Alt-Svc header to your browser telling it to connect to a Cloudflare onion (<somerandomstring>.onion) site instead.

Onion sites are great in theory as they exist "inside" the Tor network so you can connect to them without using Tor exit nodes, thus avoiding some surveillance and attack vectors. However there seems to be something broken with the Cloudflare onion implementation or the way Tor Browser handles it or both, at least in my case. I can't think of anything wrong on my side though. It's a vanilla install of Tor Browser on an otherwise empty VM.

Solution

Unfortunately I don't know how to debug this issue or what the proper solution would be. Since I'm not concerned about exit nodes I simply disabled the Alt-Svc option in Tor Browser. It's a relatively new feature (I believe Cloudflare started doing it a couple of years ago but stable versions of Tor Browser had it initially disabled; not sure when the option was enabled) and I don't see any benefit for it when connecting to a known HTTPS site.

Anyone experiencing similar issues? With Tor Browser or without? Is it really onion-related or just some bizarre coincidence?
22  Other / Politics & Society / Brace for impact - Facebook is banning QAnon on: October 07, 2020, 05:59:08 AM
Some of those shitheads may end up here so keep an eye out and don't feed the new trolls lest you get your arm chewed off at shoulder.

Quote
Facebook has banned all accounts linked to the QAnon conspiracy theory movement from its platforms.

OTOH, it's quite possible that the whole QAnon is just BADecker with a bunch of sockpuppets, in which case we're fine.

Now seriously, if someone can explain what the fuck is making those people believe such nonsense I'd appreciate that. Don't tell me they all live in Flint and drink tap water.

Quote
QAnon is a conspiracy theory that says President Trump is waging a war against elite Satan-worshipping paedophiles.
23  Other / Meta / If you received a merit... on: October 05, 2020, 04:57:51 PM
... it likely means that:

  • You made a post and someone thought it's a good post, or perhaps someone clicked the wrong button.

It doesn't mean that:

  • Anyone else thinks it's a good post.
  • Anyone likes your post or you.
  • Anyone agrees with your post or with you.
  • Your post is right or righteous.
  • You're not a shitposter.
  • You're trustworthy.
  • You're not dumb.
  • Your post doesn't break the forum rules.
  • You'll get any more merits for that post or any post.
  • You should try making more such posts.
  • You should pester other users for merit.

Just some inspirational-motivational thoughts for your Monday. May or may not be based on a true story.

You know what happens when an AI says "too much work"? Yep, humans have to do it.

So here is a list of the most referenced posts within Bitcointalk. A reference is a quote or a link inside a post (not e.g. in a signature). There is at least one known issue - because human - the first post of a thread is counted separately from a link to the thread without the "msg" part. That's how the rules topic appears at positions #2 and #4. (fixed)

Update 2020-10-02: Excluded references within the same thread, and references between the posts of the same user. This removed a lot of spammy threads. The original list is here.

Update 2020-10-04: Fixed a bug in finding the first post of the thread, which was causing the "posts of the same user" condition to not work in some cases.

Update 2020-10-12: Added "users" column to show the number of users who posted the link.

26  Economy / Reputation / Thread for the insufferable twit Timelord2067 to bitch about suchmoon on: September 29, 2020, 12:07:03 AM
The aforementioned twit is too chickenshit to create a thread to bitch about me, choosing instead to follow me around and feed into various doxings as he goes, so being the generous and helpful person that I am I decided to help him out one last time.

@Timelord2067, feel free to bitch here as much as you want. And given that you now have a dedicated place for that, I will no longer feel bad reporting your off topic bullshit in other threads as off topic bullshit.

Let me start it off: in grotesque expressions of hostility that still baffle me, Timelord2067 appears to be trying to tell me that he holds a grudge because I offered him some help last year and it didn't meet his expectations (I bet you're shocked how that could have happened given my tremendous help with this thread). For which I would apologize if he had communicated those expectations, such as his inexplicable fantasy that it was a "project" we were working on. Fuck it, I'll still apologize: Timelord2067 - I'm sorry. Could you please forgive me and forget that I exist and stop derailing unrelated threads with that. Post as many trust ratings as you want in any color that you want, I honestly no longer care.

Feel free to air any other grievances below (or above if you're one of those weirdos using the "show most recent posts at the top" option).

The topic is Timelord2067's grievances so if anyone has anything else to moan about - create your own fucking thread or piss me off sufficiently so that I create one for you.
27  Other / Politics & Society / RAGE: Bob Woodward's second book about Trump on: September 10, 2020, 01:15:36 AM
Bob Woodward published his first book about Trump, titled "Fear", in 2018: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Fear/Bob-Woodward/9781501175527

Next week he's releasing his second book "Rage": https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Rage/Bob-Woodward/9781982131739

To me the most astonishing thing about this second book isn't really the salacious but unsurprising stuff about Trump blatantly lying about coronavirus etc, but the fact that he allowed to be interviewed and even taped. Woodward has recordings of Trump actually saying stupid things that will no doubt play non-stop on cable news from now until the election day, or at least until Trump says something even more stupid.

Why did the very stable genius agree to be interviewed by the author of "Fear", which was already very unflattering? I'm sure there is a great 4D chess strategy here, please enlighten me.
28  Other / Meta / Revoke self-moderating privileges from korner and other hypertrolls on: September 09, 2020, 07:05:17 PM
If we're not banning korner's alts can we at least prevent them from creating self-modded threads? They create accusations, even trust flags, then routinely delete posts in the subsequent discussions. It's quite clear that they just abuse the self-mod feature as another way to troll people (and spam via indirect notification PMs LOL).

Taking self-mod privilege away would probably remove a large part of the incentive for korner (and other proven hypertrolls like cryptohunter) to keep creating those threads. And yes, I know we shouldn't feed the trolls to begin with, etc, but honestly can we expect every user to be aware of all these disruptive sockpuppets. There should be a more direct punishment for abusing a forum feature in this way. Right now since ban evasion can't be proven to moderators' satisfaction there are basically no consequences for this. You can't even report it.

For example:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5215552 now has 13 posts, used to be 90+: https://loyce.club/archive/topics/521/5215552.html

Not sure what's going on, perhaps actmyname is testing our vigilance (Edit: apologies to Timelord2067 for an inappropriate joke), or the mythical AI is finally here (one of the users is called "aiguy" LOL), or maybe just a bored shitposter trying to earn a merit through sheer volume. At any rate, reporting those posts individually seems like a massive waste of time for everyone involved so perhaps a mod or an admin could check patrol and nuke them, TYVM.

Edit
It turned out to be a (likely scammy) money-making "method" initiated on hackforums. Users marked with [hf] above are suspected to have posted in the hackforums thread but most of the listed users are likely participants of the scheme.

Nope i don't trust anyone to escrow, so i will do escrow ... i am putting my reputation on this small betting biz ...

This is a user account created in 2015, recently woke up, has one DT green trust rating from 2015. Not quite escrow material.

Edit - clarification: I'm not claiming the account changed hands, just pointing out the lack of trading history (or any forum presence) between 2016 and 2020.

33  Other / Meta / Do type 2/3 flags apply when the damage is not monetary/financial/material? on: August 02, 2020, 12:05:37 PM
"This user violated a casual or implied agreement with me, resulting in damages."

"This user violated a written contract with me, resulting in damages."

What the title says - do the above statements in flag descriptions mean only monetary/financial/material damage? I have a faint feeling this has already been discussed somewhere but I can't recall. Getting old is not fun. Grin

I scanned the Trust Flags thread for "damage". It seems that quite a few people add "financial" to the word "damage" as if that's a fact but there is no clear definition of this. I'd prefer more precision in the flag text but absent that - what do we think the scope should be?

Hypothetical discussion only. Any specific cases are off topic. Alice and Bob and possibly Carol only. Thanks.

Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservative voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen.

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1265601611310739456

That's right, let's close down businesses we don't like, fuck the constitution and all its amendments. A wonderful caricature of what the Republican party used to stand for... pretended to stand for... something like that.

Justin Amash, a former Republican-turned independent congressman from Michigan, said Wednesday that he stopped actively campaigning for his House seat in mid-February as he has been considering running for president as a libertarian.

Granted he's a tea party nutjob but somehow he sounds more sane than Trump. And if he gets a few Republican votes that can only help my bet.

Self-mod because trolls. Anything that's not related to Amash or at least to the 2020 presidential election will be deleted with extreme prejudice.
36  Other / Meta / Scrap the trolling rule? on: February 27, 2020, 02:14:50 PM
This post:

in 5 years you have done nothing.  you have not added a single line of code to a single crypto project, and have not worked for a single blockchain startup
you remind me of zepher, did actually NOTHING for BTC, and like zepher, 6 months after your dead, people will forget all about you
oh, you worked for rollin.io, so you helped degenerates waste their money, woot?   all you HAVE done is extract $$$ for your own means from this scene, congrats?

LOL maybe in the next 5 years you will actually contribute to the technology that brings us all here....

Seemed like a good test for the trolling rule:

3. No trolling.

So I reported it as "100% trolling". It was marked as bad. Granted I could have added more info as to why I think it's trolling (attack on the OP, attack on a deceased forum member, false statements - 100% inflammatory content).

Is it trolling? If not - why? If yes - do posts like that have a chance of being removed (with a better report comment perhaps) or should we not bother?

38  Bitcoin / Project Development / [β] BPIP Extension: user info & extra features add-on/extension, Firefox/Chrome on: February 10, 2020, 09:47:52 PM
Warning: beta-quality software. Use at your own risk.

Somewhat-stable version: 2.2.5
Latest test version: 2.3.x

What is this?

A web browser extension ("add-on" in Mozilla-speak) that provides additional features to BitcoinTalk.org. Some of these features use data from BPIP.org, some others work entirely inside your browser. The extension activates when you browse BitcoinTalk.org pages such as threads or user profiles and inserts additional info about BitcoinTalk users and additional controls.

What's BPIP?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5213618.0

What does the extension do exactly?

Current version (2.2.5)

All features are configurable (on/off, some with additional settings like custom themes). Features that automatically send requests to BPIP or Ninjastic are off by default, other features are on by default. To turn them on or off go to extension settings (e.g. after installation click the extension icon on the toolbar).

This version includes everything from 2.1.x plus the following:

  • Show links to Ninjastic.space for users, threads, and posts. (on)
  • Show number of topics the user posted in (uses Ninjastic API). (off)
  • Show cryptocurrency addresses the user has posted (uses Ninjastic API). (off)
  • Show user's favorite topics (uses Ninjastic API). (off)

More details and screenshots here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5224821.msg55623376#msg55623376

Previous version (2.1.x)

  • Show a link to user profile on BPIP for each user. (on).
  • Show a link to user profile on Loyce.club for each user. (on)
  • Show DT1/DT2 status/strength for each user. (off)
  • Show active/banned/archived status for each user. (off)
  • Show earned merit for each user - total and 30/120/365 day sub-totals. Optionally hide old merit scores that include the airdrop. (off)
  • In board view (list of threads) show merit sent within each thread. (off)
  • Show shortcut buttons to include/exclude a user in your trust list. (on)
  • Show BPIP Most Recognized ranking for each user. (off)
  • Enhanced merit stats on user merit pages - calculated without contacting BPIP. (on)
  • Allow quoting posts from locked threads into clipboard. (on)
  • Allow quoting trust ratings into clipboard. (on)
  • Show additional links under the MORE menu - links to rules, merit system, trust system info etc. (on)
  • Alternative styling/themes for Bitcointalk, e.g. dark theme. (off)

More details and screenshots here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5224821.msg55473904#msg55473904

Older version (2.0.x)

  • Show a link to BPIP next to each username. (on)
  • Show DT1/DT2 status/strength for each user. (off)
  • Show active/banned/archived status for each user. (off)

Is it going to spy on me?

We don't log your IP address when the extension contacts our server but if you don't trust us you should use Tor or VPN. The extension can technically read any data from your BitcoinTalk session, including your PMs, but it doesn't do so. It collects user IDs from the page you're looking at - e.g. a list of posts in a thread - and sends that list of IDs to bpip.org to get info about those users, and only does so if you turn the optional features on (these features are off by default).

The extension works even if you browse BitcoinTalk.org without being logged in. The source code is not obfuscated and can be examined by anyone with sufficient JavaScript knowledge using developer tools built into most browsers. Same tools can also be used to check network traffic to/from the extension.

Where can I get it?

Firefox and derivatives, such as Tor Browser: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bpip-extension/

To make the extension work in the Android version of Firefox/Tor, you may need to use this workaround: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5224821.msg55623506#msg55623506

Chrome and derivative/compatible browsers: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ecpfdlfjiabpdnlhmkmannofnmpdakkj

Where can I get a really glitchy alpha version?

Before installing the test version please uninstall or disable your existing BPIP extension, if you have one.

Firefox and derivatives, such as Tor Browser: N/A

Chrome and derivative/compatible browsers: N/A

What's with all the questions in big bold font?

If you got this far, it worked, didn't it? Cool

If you have other questions or concerns - please feel free to post in the thread.

Any comments are welcome but I'd like to keep this thread focused on the BPIP browser extension as much as possible. Anything that is BPIP-related but not specific to the extension should go to the main BPIP thread.

40  Other / Meta / Board-specific signatures on: January 22, 2020, 09:20:39 PM
Another one for the dustbin.

The ChipMixer gold rush and specifically this and this got me thinking (never a good sign) about a new feature that would give users an option to wear a different signature on some boards.

A couple of possible use cases:

1) Local boards could have signatures translated into their specific languages.
2) Users could wear an alternative signature on boards where their signature campaign doesn't pay (P&S for example), provided the campaign allows that of course.

Don't ask me how this could be implemented. It won't be implemented but I'd like to hear your opinions anyway.
