only sucking part is all the people from other pools that are asleep not realizing their stuff is pointing at slush!

need to shave off that extra hashing power!! ugh!! i dont have my new s3's yet to overcome such things!!
142  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 11, 2014, 11:47:34 PM
for upgrading to cgminer 4.6 is upgrading to the newest firmware a must??

I am seeing one hashing 8gh/s slower another the same and another 2gh/s slower.

I do 243.75 and all my miners sit at 495gh/s
now I am seeing 492 and 488. and yes the cpu load is much lower the os is responsive again!

You do NOT need to update the firmware before you run cgminer 4.6
How long have they been running for?  cgminer 4.6 seems to take a while to ramp-up to speed in my experience (may-be the maintainer can throw some more light on this), so if they have only been running for a few hours, let them be.

2 hours I had them going. one was sitting at 505 for an hour but fell back to 495 after the 2nd hour

I'd say let them be for at least 24hrs. Hash-rate variance would / can account for that, and it just may be that the block you (we) are currently hashing is harder (this is not factual by the way!). Hash rate variance smoothing is one of the benfits of 4.6, so it will ramp up over time, not the previous knee jerk type increases and decreases.
PS. have you looked at your pool-side hash-rates and are able to make comparisons with pre 4.6 hashrates?
EDIT: pool-side hash-rates AND earnings!

well after 7+ hours all are sitting below 490 so I reverted back to the old cgminer.
I'll try it again some other day... 7+ hours is long enough to get the average up. yeah yeah blocks etc 3 were found during.
if it aint even hitting 495 after 7+ hours there isnt much chance its going to hit 505. the odds are against it. now if they were still sitting at 495 that is a different thing.

Yet there would be signs the tape had been removed and replaced.  There was quite a bit of additional USPS Priority Mail tape but there was no signs of repackaging that jumped out at me.  What I find curious is the Bitmain box dimensions difference.  Was about to measure the boxes and looked at the second first, this time more closely, and the bottom had been opened and resealed.

#1 room temp 79°, 442.64GH/s(avg) HW 151, 15hrs 49min
#2 room temp 83°, 428.83GH/s(avg) HW 39, 245 (it just made a liar of me), 15hrs 53 min.

not saying it happened, but you would be amazed how easily tape comes off on something that sits in a freezer, then reattaches when warmed.
but either way bitmain mines these before selling them.  I think they actually mine the whole stock load as they are building out the next batch. like build batch 7 mine them all and not sell them till batch 8 is ready, mine batch 8's till batch 9 is ready to replace them.

@StratoBitz - Use a 650Watt, 80+ Gold, modular or semi-modular; for one machine alone.

You won't find a good quality PSU with enough PCI-E wires to power with overclock.

I recommend SeaSonic or Corsair.

dont buy gold power supplies, for the price of a gold 650 you can buy a bronze 80 evga 750 with 5 year warranty and save $20.
4 pci-e not that u actually need 4, 2 work fine for overclocking.
147  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 11, 2014, 04:56:07 PM
I feel faint burning smell near s3 fan.
is it normal?

I bought two S3's from reseller's here in the US.  The first unit upon firing up for the first time started giving a smell of some electronic part cooking but that cleared after a few minutes.  I suspect that's normal for a brand new unit that has only been run long enough to check it's running okay.  The second S3, was in a somewhat larger box and looked the same.  No cooking electronics smell and I was looking for it.  That one never runs quite up to the standard set by the first.  It's much more prone to falling hashrate with temperature rise.  I took it apart and changed the thermal compound.  One of the two boards had screws that were grossly overtightened.  This second one may have failed its initial test and was subject to troubleshooting where a technician really mashed down the heatsink hold-down screws to improve the thermal paste contact which had been reapplied fresher and more liberally than on the first board.  I must restate how that second now runs.  Since removing and reapplying thermal paste, it runs with fewer hardware errors than the first.  I may remove and replace the thermal paste on the first but it runs well so I haven't yet.  I'd say you're lucky you smelled that new electronics smell.

um bitmain mines these for a week or 2, so u arent going to receive one that was turned on to make sure it works then shipped out.
and most people reselling them mine them a few days just because they can, before selling them.
You would be nuts to leave it in the box the whole time it is in your possession.

148  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 08, 2014, 08:49:44 PM
Heads up guys, if you update your CGMiner beyond what it comes with, bitmain will deny you any future RMA

Source: They denied several of my S1s back in the day when I applied Kano's fix.

there is no way for them to know you did this unless u send one back to them without resetting it or admitting you did it.
149  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [5000 TH] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + VarDiff on: September 06, 2014, 03:32:00 AM
I learned the hard way also. Now I just "set it and forget it".

Yeah but what sucks is if  you have a internet or power problem that takes your machines down you get penalized

+1... that system is not fair. Then it's not pps because I had all those shares and i received nothing because I just mined 15/16 hours . 15 hours lost . Fukin great system

and if u came into the 16 hour block with 30minutes left u would have got paid like u were here all 16 hours.
basically if you dont like it dont mine slush.

it stops pool hopping.
150  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 03, 2014, 09:21:17 PM
It should be good enough for 500w, enough for an S3 but you may need to add a 5v load to get full efficiency. A 4r7 ohm 10w resistor across the 5v lines may well solve your problems

This is not necessary.  A simple jumper/bridge (paperclip or whatever) will do just fine.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=671189.msg8471571#msg8471571

the new EVGA B2 750+ supplies come with a jumper header for using the power supply not in cases!
They have accepted their power supplies are being used for MINING!
151  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [5000 TH] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + VarDiff on: September 02, 2014, 09:10:35 PM
Can i ask the same question as many others before me... How much do you earn / block here for 1 th/s a Day or pr hour.. Dosent work to greate fore me up til now.. I have seen this ask before and a number is put up but No one says in what time Line ..

it varies. generally with slush u will earn slightly more than other pools. but u can also earn 0 from a 24 hour block happening!
but it ALWAYS averages out in favor of slush...

so if u r not a fan of math then Slush is not the place as u will insist the results are wrong when they are not.

Does anyone have the actual weight of an S3 in the box (not just what bitmain prints on the label)?
Mailed one this morning. Just under 13lbs.

yaeh I see fedex saying 10lb and ups saying 13lbs
154  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: August 28, 2014, 09:06:57 PM
Hi, anyone shed any light on this?

Been running @250 for the past 3 weeks solid, then this morning that happened.

Ive clocked it down, but I'm assuming I've fried one side.

Any ideas for a repair anyone?

what batch are these where the fan speeds are completely wrong?

do not mine with graphic card, your btc mined is even less then getting those free bitcoin at https://www.landofbitcoin.com/?r=phqCKSzE8j0J1vMW
get asic miner, usd 50 might get you a s1 if u bargain hard

haha an S1 for $50...
 imagine someone being that dumb...
cuz you know you cant buy an upgrade kit for them to make them S3's... no really you cant just yet Wink

maybe a Block eruptor Cube, those are only worth $50. s1's lil under $150 at x5 the hashing rate
wow funniest thing on ebay is people selling corsair 500+'s with a cube for under $50... the power supply is that value! nice deals if you can snag it!

I got a couple Antminer S1's for about $70 a pop after lots of bargain hunting.  Amazing what you find when people misspell stuff.  I used to find the usb block erupters for dirt cheap cause they would spell it block eruptOr.  Search and you shall find.  Also amazing what you can find on craigslist too got an Antminer S2 for $650 once.

JT

yeah I forgot about the dumb dumb factor. newbs to ebay etc not understanding how things work then the misspelling part. good find along with the power supply addition.

FYI, MMXIV coin is holding another raffle. Although it says 1 ticket is 2 coins it has been reduced to 1 ticket for 1 coin, a pretty decent deal for a 1 in 100 chance of winning 2 Ant S3's, presumably from Batch 8.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=753112.new#new

how is that a decent deal?? for the person running the raffle quite a decent deal.

I almost at breaking even point on ROI on 4 antminer s3! Bitmain u rock!

It's all gravy from September 2014 and onwards! This was the best purchase of mining hardware that I ever done!

The last line contradicts itself by my opinion and helps me to prove my point that after ROI the S3s will be useless.

all this complaining about will it pay off seems to completely totally ignore you most likely already have equipment presently mining that paid itself off months ago... so spending a lil more to boost what is already mining pays that off in a month or less. depending how much mining power you already have.

it seems like a huge oversight in the whole whine. never mind as the complainers whine and whine, the words (SOLD OUT) keep coming and going...
kind of like crying in the corner while everyone just moves along with the flow

Teamviewer or RDP to a PC on the network.  Access the Ants from there.
Never had any experience with Teamviewer. Is there something that has to be installed on the S3?

teamviewer connects you to your pc in your house. as if you were sitting at it. so the answer is NO.
160  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: August 21, 2014, 07:53:49 PM
I just don't understand why other people are so obsessed with other people's financial decisions. Why does everyone need to make a profit mining? Why does everyone assume their calculations are correct for another person's scenario? I also love how these ROI calculations never seem to take into account "salvage value" of the old equipment, expected increases in the value of BTC, or the enjoyment some of us get from this hobby. Do you go to the guy down the street who's spending a bunch of money restoring an old Camaro or Mustang that he's never going to ROI? No one is saying I ordered a bunch of S3's and I'm going to get rich!

The world is full of companies who charge too much for product and still manage to find customers, and the world is full of people will to pay more than they should for products. Please accept it and get over it. If anything take advantage of the opportunity and start your own hardware company and undercut everyone else and be a hero.

Exactly...

FYI I buy most of my equipment from EBAY and AMAZON... so that means I am paying like 1 btc!
but then again I dont pay anything for electricity so I dont much care. and I am mostly using money I recycled from selling off old equipment and mined BTC...
Why dont I pay with BTC? cuz it all gets used up duh!
Sure wish I kept at least one of those 7970's! haha...
where are all the flamers who said I couldnt run 7870 xt's maxed out on Dell 375 watt power supplies??? Those desktops are all still running fine. and the power supplies were already 5 years old.
