It's not that bad, it's just changing R1 and the crystal.  The stock crystals needed to be removed anyway and they're quite a pain to unsolder for the first time, now I've got leaded solder on there when the new crystals arrive they'll be much easier to swap out and hopefully with the extra cooling I can get them to run at twice the speed they do now.  Right now I'm running them with extra heatsinking and fan cooling.

Thanks I was using the external 15A adjustable voltage supply with the higher frequency crystals so current should not be a problem.

I had ordered the crystals I'm currently using off eBay and the specs were not too clear.  Now they don't seem to work the same as yours I've gone and ordered the ones off DigiKey.  I hope I can get some higher speeds from these as I've bought a lot of cooling equipment.

For now I've upgraded 9 of my 10 erupters to run at ~360MHash with the eBay 16Mhz crystals while I'm waiting on the the DigiKey crystals.

I've got my 15A external power supply now and it's working with a 16Mhz crystal ok, I'm getting avg. 360MHash/s with this installed, running at 1.35V - is this a normal speed for a 16Mhz crystal?  Little or no hardware errors with this config.

If I put a 20Mhz or 24Mhz crystal in, the light doesn't go off and the BE isn't recognised by the BFGminer software.  Does that mean it's the wrong type of crystal or any suggestions as to how I could make the higher speeds work, even for a short time?

Thanks for the voltage range updates Bluestreak66, my crystals arrived today. I've got 16MHz, 20MHz and 24Mhz here now.  My external power supplies aren't here yet but am going to try 16MHz tonight with the built in supply.

Sounds like there is confusion about which Avalon is getting the money (and it's not the BTC mining company).  From another thread:

I've ordered some 15A external buck converters - I'm going to try and remove the coil off the board which will disconnect the onboard power but leave the filtering caps in place. This will give me better control of the voltage.  After hopefully getting 16mhz stable I'll try a 20mhz crystal.  Also got some big coolers coming.
587  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Block Erupter USB - Overclocking/ hacking ? on: July 29, 2013, 08:29:56 AM
Just got my crystal oscillator circuit built and installed onto my block erupter.
Without changing the voltage I can get stable output with a 13.5mhz crystal Smiley
that is 378 mhz. averaging 350-360 mh/s

Still need to test more. Smiley

I think it was haxtormoogle with the variable oscillator?
588  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Block Erupter USB - Overclocking/ hacking ? on: July 29, 2013, 08:07:29 AM
If I would like to go safer. 400 and 1,2V will that work out of USB and what do I need to do?

You'd need to find a crystal that drives the hash chip at that rate.  12mhz = 333MH/s, 16mhz = 448MH/s - if you can find a compatible crystal in between then a lower voltage may be stable.

Bluestreak66, thank you and good on you for trying this out and publishing your technique and results.  Amigaman, you're now on my ignore list.

I hope to contribute more once the crystals and heatsinks arrive. I've got 10 block erupters here and they are chugging along but about to get steamrollered by the new ASICs that are on the way, so I hope to make them last a bit longer.  I'd love to get 5GHs out of the 10 BEs, and maybe more if practical.

So the overclocking mods you've done at the moment are a 16mhz crystal with voltage regulator resistors R1 @ 1k2 and R2 @ 1k5  and the whole unit powered by 5.05V?

I'm going to attach a RAM heatsink to a single BE100 chip to start with.  Then for higher speed overclocking was thinking about clamping a heat pipe + fan unit onto 4 block erupter units lying on a passive heatsink. Each unit's USB connector facing outward and the units offset so it should be possible to have a BE100 in each corner of the heat pipe collector heatsink.

It's good if the power doesn't come from the USB system, as then can wire in a non-powered hub for data and have a separate adjustable power circuit.

It doesn't matter what type cooler you put on it if you cant get the heat to the cooler. I have a huge cpu heat pipe cooler here with a peltier cooler on the bottom that i was playing with. It will ice the bottom of the board but the top is still hot. The whole contraption along with power supply was drawing ~70 watts, not really feasible if your trying to get bitcoin with these things. It did clearly show that the heat transfer to the cooler is the issue. Also be aware that the voltage regulator is at its rated limit running like it is. By my calculations is outputting 1.47v @ 3.05 amps, it does get hot. If anybody finds some cheap thermal material that could be used let me know.

So it's drawing 3.05A with a 16mhz crystal?  That does seem like a lot of current.  Would the voltage regulator need heatsinking on top as well?
591  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Block Erupter USB - Overclocking/ hacking ? on: July 28, 2013, 08:13:05 PM
What I was thinking was mounting the fanned active heatsink on the top of the BE100 chip and a big passive heatsink at the bottom of the PCB, so both sides of the chip are being cooled.

When the stuff I've ordered gets here I'll try it out and post some pictures.

Thanks for your pictures  Smiley   What is the current draw, it looks like you are supplying 5V separate from the USB port, was that the cause of the fluctuations / HW faults?
594  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Block Erupter USB - Overclocking/ hacking ? on: July 28, 2013, 06:12:19 AM
Wow that's awesome!  Do you think it will handle faster crystals than 16mhz with good forced air and finned heatsink cooling?
595  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Block Erupter USB - Overclocking/ hacking ? on: July 28, 2013, 05:45:40 AM
I've got a bigger adjustable power supply here, does anyone know what would be involved in replacing the on-board power with a seperate external supply of ~1.4V ?  Eg cut a track, or remove a component to disconnect the internal 1.4V supply.  That would allow easily adjusting the power with a faster crystal installed.
596  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Block Erupter USB - Overclocking/ hacking ? on: July 27, 2013, 02:01:12 AM
Might be a issue with my clock source setup. Used a 74f04 hex inverter IC to get the crystal oscillating. Might have the wrong capacitance on the crystal. but My block erupter likes to run with a 16 mhz crystal installed and a active mini fan cooling system Smiley changed the voltage resistors to 1.2k
Hashing is all over the place between 390-500 mh/s  Im wondering if this is my cgminer settings? sometimes the status led stays on for a bit of time as though it is waiting for work.

What is your error rate? From your post am I reading correctly you replace R1 and R2 with 1.2k resistors? That would be 1.6v correct? I have a 16mhz oscillator installed on the board and am trying tweak the voltage to get it stable.

Hi Bluestreak66 could you please point me in the right direction to order the correct 16mhz oscillator for the circuit?  A link to a supplier site or part number would be really helpful.

Thanks!

Thank you Ken for listening and engaging with the AMC shareholders. I'm excited by the potential changes and developments, and have some BFL chip codes to contribute if there is a need for them.

On another note, it looks like ~61.80 BTC have been moved from http://blockchain.info/address/1DJpsvnM7xTnQbWEhLYyCyfxQyxwupEzCa

Does anyone know what the dividend amount per share will be this week?

Ken, can you please respond to this link https://www.kncminer.com/news/news-22 and will you be providing more information about your collaboration with eASIC, eg in the form of a letter or statement from them confirming the specs of your announcement?  Thank you.

Dude, give him a few days.  I understand that as shareholders, we want our confidence in this stock to increase, but there have been several other posts like yours already posted to this thread.  I am sure that he has seen them, and will respond accordingly.  Typical businesses do not issue press statements within 24 hours of the owner getting yelled at on a forum.  Just wait a few days, and see if kslaughter delivers.  In the meantime, use this as an opportunity to buy some cheap shares. Wink

Sorry, yes happy to wait for a response. I'm a bit disappointed that the main announcement was pre-announced and there was time to get stuff ready beforehand.   If the main announcement had had more weight behind it (eg pics of a prototype, a letter from eASIC etc) we probably wouldn't be right where we started in terms of stock price and also more funds going Ken's way to pay for further development etc.
