Youre right they claimed in their whitepaper that they had already worked with big companies. Private keys shall be obviously with you where no one can be the owner for your private keys and you should safely secure them in a confidential folder but there can be a request to confirm your identity at times with any keyword. It seems that if you have lost the private key it is impossible to return. You should be able to store it somewhere else, like a free storage service like google drive or dropbox, maybe that might help someday. of course, private keys are very safe and convenient.
