This is in the spirit of being complementary to HF-engineer, additional information and not a challenge....

I feel peoples' pain with underperforming BJs, and I again want to point out that 3.11 on windows has been a good setup for me. Oh, I hate windows too.  My goal is to move this all over to an OS X machine, actually, but the guys that do OS X ports have to resolve some issues, so I'm waiting a few weeks on that.

But on a little mini-desktop running Win 8 and cgminer 3.11, with some modest overclocking, my previously underperforming BJ (390 g/hash out of the box) is running at 430-435, and another machine is running very slightly higher, maybe 435-440.

With 3.11 I have not experienced stability issues (knock on wood), save the previously mentioned need to hotplug if you restart cgminer.  (3.12 was subject to crashing.)

I've also had BJs horizontally and vertically - made no difference.

Where I did waste time was trying to devise an extra-cool place for them.  This doesn't seem necessary.  And really cold temps seem to even slow them down. The climate is mild here now, with outside temps ranging from about 5c to 24c.  I've learned to just throw open the windows, ensure adequate (but not crazy) ventilation, and let the things hash.  The procs will go up to about 82c max, but generally hover in the 78-80c range during the day.  Right now it's 11c, and they are in the low 70s, in a room that's probably 13-14c due to the exhaust heat.

My 0.02 cents.  I'll shut up about it now, though.

Ditch the RPI folks.

And I gotta say, I was saying, a couple days ago, that there's crash/reboot problem with 3.12, at least on a significant proportion of the machines.  Something about not getting along with the watchdog, I think.

Get a old PC (or linux box, I suppose), and run 3.11 straight from ckolivas' website.  Works best for me, so far. Stable. Only problem is a need for hotplugging on restart of the software.

Or if you want to keep crashing and rebooting, I guess it's your right to use the RPi.  Keep the network a little slower for me!  Tongue

Unfortunately you can't buy the Rack DCLC model that we use retail.  The closest thing is the H100i, but it comes with extra stuff you don't really need.  My opinion is that this stuff is overpriced.  With all the ASIC companies out there, someone should start another cooler company!

Also, if you order the retail Corsair stuff, be sure to be very careful with the hoses.  The thick rubber ones they use like to pop off and leak green coolant all over everything.  (Don't ask me how I know!)

Perhaps a topic for the other thread, but I hope that HF makes good on its pledge to have reasonably priced, HF-selected/approved hardware available for purchase when the MPP ships.  Like yesterday, hopefully.

I've seen a PCB with a 1.1 sticker on it, and one without.  What do other Babyjets say?

(Look about in the middle of the PCB, at the top edge below the radiator.)

And, by the way, ckolivas, has anyone ever told you that your handle reminds them of bike paths?  Cklovias would be perfect, but ckolivas is so close.  But maybe I'm just slightly dyslexic.

hi , ive got an issue with my bj ... it's start to run , and the psu seems to stop after 30 sec...  , i pushe the little black button on the left of the board, the unit restart , and shutdown 30 second later...   Cry    any idea?    thanx

You mean it starts to run when you start up the cgminer process and then it shuts down after 30 seconds? What does the cgminer setting say? I have seen this when the freq is set too high
in fact its'  the same problem when i try to run the bj , with a pi, or a laptop , cgminer, bfgminer, the issue is exactly the same if i dont plug anything into the usb port of the bj...      i run the bj , and 30 second later , i listen a "tac"  in the psu and it shutdown

Okay.  You start up your laptop.  You start cgminer (with the default .conf file).  You plug in the USB cable.  What does cgminer say?
265  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast BabyJet users thread on: January 31, 2014, 06:33:55 PM
You need to run Zadig and replace the driver used for the BJ with the WinUSB driver.

I did. The BabyJet is actually working fine.

These are old drivers on my machine for other hardware (e.g. block erupters) that cgminer is also trying to use for some reason. I just want it to use 'HFB' devices.

I sold my old block eruptards on ebay - $20 each - rather than try to run multiple instances or such radically different hardware under the same instance. Sorry.  I think I saw in the cgminer documentation the way to do what you are trying to do though... you have to tell it to only scan certain USB ports.
266  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast BabyJet users thread on: January 31, 2014, 06:26:42 PM
On a PC, how do I get cgminer (3.11) to ignore all of the other hardware on my machine and just use the BabyJet?

cgminer constantly has spew like this:
USB init, open device failed, err -12, you need to install a WinUSB driver for - BTB device 3:2
USB init, open device failed, err -12, you need to install a WinUSB driver for - BLT device 3:2
USB init, open device failed, err -12, you need to install a WinUSB driver for - AMU device 2:1
USB init, open device failed, err -12, you need to install a WinUSB driver for - AMU device 2:2
USB init, open device failed, err -12, you need to install a WinUSB driver for - AMU device 2:3
...

It doesn't seem to interfere with the BabyJet - everything works, but the constant spew out to the console makes it hard to read any real errors.

You need to run Zadig and replace the driver used for the BJ with the WinUSB driver.

defcon, check the cooling - does it have 4 screws and is it screwed down tight?  If not, the chip will overheat and cut out.
cooling ok , ' the unit dont come hot, it stay really cold, cause she run only 30 sec ... and shut down... Cry
the i push one of the two buttons in the left of the board, then she start again , and shutdown again 30 sec later .... it's looks like a psu issue.... not sure

Defcon, you should move this over to the BJ users' thread.  There's a chance you'll got a reply from somebody at Hashfast, or maybe somebody else with similar problems.
268  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast BabyJet users thread on: January 31, 2014, 04:47:14 PM
We can't condone overclocking, and just by luck-of-the-draw, some dies work faster than others and some run hotter, etc.  What I can say is that we are working to improve the firmware which should result in much more stable performance, whether overclocked or not.  One of the things we did is when the dies get into an unknown state, there is a watchdog timer that resets the board after about 15 seconds.  This will cause the "Device disappeared, disabling" errors, and then it will pop right back up and cgminer thinks it's a new device.  Hopefully one of the changes soon to cgminer will track the devices by their serial numbers so that doesn't happen and you don't end up with a string of different devices over time.

I had cgminer 3.12 crash twice, once unfortunately overnight.  I happened to be looking at the screen when the other crash happened.  Cgminer popped up a message about imminent reboot and something about a watchdog, and errors were spewing across the screen faster than I could read them, but rather than the BJ restarting, cgminer crashed.  I'm suspecting a similar problem caused the other shutdown.

So I rolled back to cgminer 3.11, which is not prone to the same problem.  Unfortunately, 3.11 has the disadvantage - for me at least - of usually requiring the BJ to be physically hotplugged in order to get hashing each time the program starts up (e.g. after editing the config file), or each time there is a hiccup in my setup (e.g. wifi network goes down).

I don't use minepeon or the RPi.  This is a PC.

Also, we did have some early BabyJets escape the factory with the fans installed the wrong way.  The top radiator fans should be blowing out (up) and the other chassis fans should be blowing in.  You should be able to reverse them with a phillips screwdriver if you feel comfortable.  This will help cooling.

-Phil

Err... confirming:

The two fans on top of radiator:  BLOWING OUT
The two fans on the front:  BLOWING IN

easy enough...

The single fan on the back:  BLOWING IN (?)

There seems to be contradictory advice on this last one...
270  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast BabyJet users thread on: January 30, 2014, 11:14:08 PM
4 of my 12 BJ's had air blowing IN the radiator. The rest blowing out.

That might explain why some of mine are overheating... off to check.

The fans on top of my radiator are blowing out, but what's the proper orientation for the single fan on the back?

It should be blowing out, no?  I have one that is sucking in.

John Skrodenis emailed me and asked me to specify that the notification I received was not for shipping for batch two, but rather just to check my mailing address.

Apparently a lot of B1 customers are upset and he wanted me to clarify this.

Taco, instead of bending over for John and indulging his request, you should have told him to post a clarification himself.  Duh. Are you still on the payroll or something?

As far as I can tell I never was on the payroll, or at least, I haven't really been offered any kind of concrete discounts

I'm not exactly thrilled either to know the product I was guaranteed on the 31st doesn't appear to be coming to me by then.

Fair enough.  But just remember that it's not your job to apologize or to make excuses for them.  They are big boys. They can speak for themselves.
272  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast BabyJet users thread on: January 30, 2014, 03:28:21 AM
Got my unit. They said shipping January 28th and it did. Arrived the next morning (this morning).

Minor, what was your position in the Batch 1 order chain?

Purely based on short term observation, but I think that the BubbaJet ... that's what we call them in Texas ... hashes best at around 70c.  I've had mine colder for extended periods and haven't seen any improvement. In fact, it seems a little slower. YMMV.

Opinions?

Just posted a new version of cgminer, 3.12.0 which hopefully copes better with transient USB errors on these.

This definitely seems to have helped some issues I was having that made me need to physically disconnect the USB cable and re-hotplug with almost every little upset (e.g. wifi network reboot).
275  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast announces specs for new ASIC: 400GH/s on: January 29, 2014, 04:55:26 PM
It seems other people are likewise confused.

I'm even more confused than most.
276  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast BabyJet users thread on: January 29, 2014, 04:49:14 AM
At ambient 70f/21c, my BJ reported 73-74c, with cgminer 3.11, no overclock.  It did not rise higher and throttling obviously did not kick in.

But I may have a low spec machine.  Out of the box mine does 390-395 gh/s.

If it ran faster, like the 430 gh/s some people report, the temp might be higher.

Brief experience so far suggests to me that cooling it down to the upper 60s centigrade yields a few gh/s improvement.

Cooling it down further - to 58-59c - doesn't seem to make much additional difference so far, although maybe that could provide more "room" to overclock.

There are some things on this that may not be Batch 1 orders.

I'm thinking that the MPP or upgrade boards may be shipping... I'll have more to say by 10:30AM tomorrow.
279  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast BabyJet users thread on: January 28, 2014, 10:27:38 PM
Anybody with more overclocking reports?

I see and read on their TOS about batch 3 -->

Guaranteed Product Delivery Dates – Batch 3.  The “Batch 3 Guaranteed Delivery Date” for units of Product from Hashfast’s third production batch is:  March 31, 2014.  The order confirmation sent by Hashfast to Buyer may state an earlier delivery date for that order.  Buyer may cancel the portion of the order that remains undelivered by Hashfast by the Batch 3 Guaranteed Delivery Date (or other delivery date stated in Buyer’s order) at Buyer’s request, and Hashfast will refund the payment for such cancelled units.

What about "The order confirmation sent by Hashfast to Buyer may state an earlier delivery date for that order.  "

Does it make sence, have order 1x sierra and 1 babyjet. both was ancitipate shipping mid-late January... not as garanteed?? I mean??? let me know. I have seen in my order delivery is mid-late jan, do they mean about that ?

If you read backwards in this thread, you will find your answers.

Hashfast uses misleading tactics, especially with Batch 1, to induce people to believe that their machines will be delivered earlier.  In the case of Batch 1, Hashfast indicated it would ship in late October, 2013.  But it did not ship units in any quantity until late January, 2014.

Nobody knows when your Batch 3 units will ship.  On the one hand, they now have a functional product that they are shipping in at least some quantity.  On the other, there are people in front you (Batch 2) that have not received their units.  Also, Batch 1 customers, and some Batch 2 customers, bought under the Miner Protection Program, and they are expecting further processing boards.

It's a mess.  Based on past experience, I would NOT expect that Hashfast will give you any clear answer.
