321  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mike Hearn, Foundation's Law & Policy Chair, is pushing blacklists right now on: November 14, 2013, 06:21:10 PM
I think the foundation needs to have a policy on the issue. It think it's a non-starter, but, the foundation will be asked about it and the entire community needs a reply better thought out than "no."

Besides, the government doesn't need permission to make it's own such list. It's not on the table to put this inside the protocol (the wallet, sure, but not the protocol).

By all means put it in the protocol, because if you succeed we all need to go back to the drawing boards
322  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Was Perfect...............And Then Came The Utopians! on: November 14, 2013, 06:17:33 PM
Socialism right from the get-go is evil.  Why?  Because it can exist only by the threat of force - follow these rules, give up a percentage of your earnings...OR ELSE WE WILL COME LOOKING FOR YOU.  Resist and you go to jail.  Resist further and we will kill you.  There is an unspoken gun in the room, always present, always menacing.

You say you want socialism because of the evils of capitalism.  Yet you want socialism forced on everyone at the point of a gun.  This immediately negates any discussion.  Socialism is violent by definition because it is forced upon those who may not want it.

I'll take capitalism any day.  Capitalism is not evil.  Capitalism lets the market decide.  You do not have to force capitalism upon the people at the point of a gun.  Capitalism just happens, it is peace.  It is industry.  It is Bitcoin.

Maybe I'm the only one here but why would you want capitalism?

A bunch of suits sitting in their chesterfields buying and selling companies they have never seen, except as a number in some excel sheet?

Fuck that. Call it a free market and I'm in
323  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Was Perfect...............And Then Came The Utopians! on: November 14, 2013, 06:07:54 PM
What blew it was the greed of people of people who wanted to use FPGAs and then ASICs to grab a bigger share.
This led to centralization of the network.

I would not call them Utopians, but cold hearted capitalists, ready to sell their bitcoin souls for greater profit.

If you want the Utopian/communist nirvana it can be found in Litecoin network where everyone has a fair chance to gain the same equipment to mine the coin supply.

You don't get it do you?

Bitcoin IS a "capitalist" venture, designed to protect assests from the greedy claws of government.

Why should everyone have a "fair chance"?

Seems to me that Bitcoin was established to be used by those smart enough to take advantage of it.

Well, it was, anyway.

Financial Darwinism at its best, I think.

My $.02.

Wink

But... the whole idea is that everyone gets a fair chance. And continues to do so.

If not, we might as well stick with the crony capitalism we already have.

If indeed you mean true capitalism, as opposed to crony capitalism, please start calling it a free market.
It think that will cause less confusion in a multinational forum
324  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mike Hearn, Foundation's Law & Policy Chair, is pushing blacklists right now on: November 14, 2013, 05:01:42 PM
I suggest we red-list Mike Hearn for his position in the foundation.

Let Mike just keep quiet about this in public.
We haven't heard anything from law enforcement yet.  Wait until we hear from the panel in the upcoming Senate hearings.  If they suggest controls, then it will be time to consider options.  Otherwise, we have no need to implement a blacklist, redlist, or any other restriction.
Wtf is wrong with you? No one cares about your mofo US senate.

Nothing has to be changed.

Fuck USA!

Take it easy, man.
It might be a misunderstanding going on here
325  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mike Hearn, Foundation's Law & Policy Chair, is pushing blacklists right now on: November 14, 2013, 04:36:29 PM
The first thing that comes to mind is to make sure all coins get red listed asap.

But this whole thing is really just stupid. What we really need is a currency that is technically impossible to twart into a new fiat system
326  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Learning to code for crytocurrency? on: November 14, 2013, 10:59:03 AM
in all seriousness, I'm working on a Open Source cryptocurrency project using Java.  If you'd like to be involved I'd be happy to work with you.

Do you have any info on the project? Also bear in mind I am a complete novice using java etc. I do however have lots of experience with branding and design related stuff.

sure,

not yet launched: http://www.altchain.org

if you can demonstrate that you can comprehend those papers you certainly can be useful.

thanks Owen!

Is there a online repository for this?
You think java is the best fit for the protocol/daemon itself?
327  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BOYCOTT all businesses associated to Alex Waters, Matt Mellon, and Yifu Guo! on: November 14, 2013, 10:41:18 AM
You may coinjoin your coins as much as you want. If you want to use them in "the land of the free" you'll have to give away your freedom and privacy by declaring them to Big Brother. Otherwise your output might just be frozen by the "law abiding merchant" that receives it.
Mixers are not enough to fight back. But I fail to see alternatives.

I know you and many other bitcoin developers have brilliant minds... I hope you manage to come up with a solution.
The alternative is to give up on "law abiding businesses" and create infrastructure that assists individuals in operating censorship-resistant business models.

We should prepare for this.

Allowing government control is the same thing as making it into another fiat currency.
An altcoin with better anonimity should exist, and nobody should expect it to be "white" in any way.
328  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BOYCOTT all businesses associated to Alex Waters, Matt Mellon, and Yifu Guo! on: November 13, 2013, 10:42:38 PM

It appears ZC uses a rather dubious encryption. As of this writing I can't say I trust anything other than Koblitz curves
329  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin at the US Senate on: November 13, 2013, 10:23:40 PM

With this as a backdrop I can't say I expect much good to come out of such a meeting

If you read it closely its not a bad idea.

If I get it right, someone who has a hard time with computers can use this service to get help doing "safe" transactions.
The rest of us opts out obviously.

I don't think you do read it right, at least not in its complete intent. Look at the last paragraph:
Quote
Waters says there are a few million Bitcoin addresses with positive balances. “If 10% of those were clean addresses, it would substantially improve the regulatory landscape state-side,” he says. He predicts in the future that every user will have at least one address that’s self identified, “or at least every user who wants to do business in the U.S.

Yea, bad news indeed.

Need a fix for sure
331  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BOYCOTT all businesses associated to Alex Waters, Matt Mellon, and Yifu Guo! on: November 13, 2013, 08:06:16 PM
It's an interesting idea, but I'm curious how many people will want to share their transactions with them.

Gavin Andersen was talking warmly about it at the conference this year though
332  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BOYCOTT all businesses associated to Alex Waters, Matt Mellon, and Yifu Guo! on: November 13, 2013, 07:32:49 PM
How about zerocoin?

These guys are probably hoping for a NSA contract to reveal addresses, but that was going to happen anyway. There should be ways to avoid that

It severely damages the privacy of BTC mass use.

ya.ya.yo!

Isn't privacy one of the most important features that the foundation will not compromise?

If anonymity is compromised, a better alternative will be developed. The technology is still young after all.
Those who have invested a lot in bitcoin has every reason to keep it anonymous if you ask me.

Then again, you never know with the Winklevosses, they have failed before...

335  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Explain me Like I'm 5 why Bitcoin is decentralized on: November 13, 2013, 06:00:41 PM
The majority [of hashpower] has to agree to any changes in order for those changes to work, basically.

Fixed that for u.

and the problem is that we have hashing monopolies.  Is this really money for the people?  No, it isn't.

this is why I invented Confidence Chains.  Doesn't require mining but it is distributed/p2p.

Sounds interesting. Both mining and the POW hack always bothered me

there will be some upcoming releases soon.  I don't talk TOO much about it, because too many people on here monkey whatever claims I make, distracting away from what I'm doing and greatly distorting the facts.  It's turning out to be a huge problem.

you can find the initial whitepaper here: http://www.altchain.org

I already found this
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/bitcoinx/oAERXr17zII

but I'll check that site out.

Ideally, everything should be decided, accepted and rejected by the network
337  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Explain me Like I'm 5 why Bitcoin is decentralized on: November 13, 2013, 04:32:42 PM
Its decentralized because it is the only way to prevent one (or a few) to take control. Its kind of like a forced democracy I guess.
The majority has to agree to any changes in order for those changes to work, basically.

Nobody in the network should agree to downgrade or upgrade without considering the changes.
Strictly speaking, the community as a whole is the foundation, and should be the ones to accept or reject a change.
338  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: CBlockHeader new element on: November 13, 2013, 09:11:30 AM
No idea. Could it be an alignment problem?

I'm not into the code yet but those who are probably need more info and error messages
339  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Learning to code for crytocurrency? on: November 12, 2013, 06:38:19 PM
I would suggest Go

Learning to write C++ well is 10-20 years of pain and hard work.
Nothing wrong with getting your feet wet but you should be aware of that.

C however is much easier to get a proper handle on, but then you have to consider using Go instead.
With Go you get the mix of a system level language with high priority on web technology.

On the Linux platform, I find QtCreator to be the superior development environment for C/C++

For Go, Sublime Text with the GoSublime addon is excellent
340  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin at the US Senate on: November 12, 2013, 04:14:50 PM
if BTC go up, then he kill all other legal currency, Gold, USD, RUR, Yuan, no government would not allow it,
because now is the price so high, compare it for gold, 1kg gold = 100 BTC,  realistic ?

It could kill those governments too.
It is getting quite realistic since the fiat currencies are designed around growth and not balance. I think they will implode.
